As an overconfident and ill-suited administrator myself, Varus' story really speaks to me.
What happened afterwards is also worthy of mentioning. Prisoners were now slaves and some others were used as sacrifices. Later legions would come across the ambush site and find remnants of their fallen comrades along with scattered equipment the tribes didn't take. It said they buried the ones they could find in a mass grave.
And the wall with skeletons of the dead soldiers was discovered recently in Germany
And later on there was a genocidal revenge campaign. So the Germanic tribes lost far more than the Romans in balance.
@@NR-rv8rz The Romans never again attempted to subjugate Germania, so I'd say the Germans got what they wanted regardless.
what you wanted to say is: Romans were much worse war criminals than Germanians, but you somehow expressed it in a very cringy way@@NR-rv8rz
@@zurgesmiecalsaying somebody from antiquity "war criminals" is the only cringey thing here.
One of the most vicious and terrifying battles of the ancient roman time...
That's honestly the best way to describe this battle which says a lot when you think of all the bloodbaths there have been in ancient Roman times.
Carrhae and Cannae: no it's not
The battle of Carrhae has to be the worst, Crassus had like 50,000 men and lost to 10,000 Archers, I don't get if you're that rich and powerful, why cant you afford hundreds of scouts.
@@jason4275 they lost a lot more in Cannae
@@GeorgeEstregan828 they didn't say Teutoburg forest was the worst battle, but 1 of the worst.
Varus claimed descendancy from Romulus, the mythical founder of Rome. He was the first in his family to have a meaningful impact on Roman politics in nearly half a millennia. And then he went and did this ...
Descended from Romulus would mean descended from Mars, which he clearly was not.
@@kevin6293 "claimed" descent, this kind of thing was common in ages gone by - the pre-norman kings of england claimed descent from woden himself
@@barnsleyman32 and Caesar descended from Venus.
Amazing video - can you imagine the horror of the Romans when they sent a force to investigate what happened and saw the remains of their legions?
Romans usually turned their enemies into straight up offal so they were probably pretty chill about the whole thing.
"We have been betrayed and attacked. But let's march into this unknown, hostile territory. What can go wrong?"
- Varus, 9 AD
famous last words
it wasn't unknown territory, it was well known to the Romans as they had occupied it for decades. Going forward was a shorter and better option than going back.
yeah like wtf. we just got ambushed, hope if i go down this darker alley it will be alright.
@@watch-Dominion-2018
It was shorter but I really never understood the thinking being that is was far less well known than the main road. It always felt like Roman arrogance and the belief the "savages", even Roman raised would never be able to set up a real ambush.

Again. I'm cooking roast dinner for the family. Just opened my 2nd bottle of wine and this pops up! Perfect Sunday. Cheers guys

When entering the Teutoburg forest the bulk of the roman army thinned out and with some 15,000 - 20.000 soldiers and civilians advancing through the unfavorable terrain it was stretched out over several kilometers. So when the middle was attacked the front and the back probably wouldn´t even notice. And the germanic warriors had already disappeared in the woods again before reinforcements arrived. The roman cavalry (accused by the historian V. Paterculus of cowardice) tried a breakthrough to the Rhine but ran into a trap that Arminius had setup and was completely wiped out. The psychlogical element probably played a role in this battle, too. The superstitious Romans feared dark forrests and when reported thunderstorms started, it was seen by them as a bad omen. The Germanics on the other hand most likely believed that Thor, god of weather and thunder showed them his support in this way.
I think this video definitely underplays the tactics of the germanic warriors - it was quite a trap that was set up, and not just a horde that won through sheer numbers.
Finally! Once I noticed you were covering Roman history during Augustus's reign I knew you would cover this fascinating chapter of Roman history. Bazbattles never disappoints!!
The aftermath of Teutoburg is fascinating as well. The Roman’s didn’t simply leave Germania alone. They launched a retaliatory campaign, and rained destruction upon tribes that were responsible for Teutoburg. Rome had a reputation to uphold, and couldn’t afford to take that defeat sitting down.
As for Arminius himself, he was killed in a power struggle against other Germanic warlords.
But Romans couldn’t conquer Germania
It wasn't enough. Rome had gotten soft. Had Rome, in the aftermath, gone all "Julius Ceasar-like" on the Germanians, killing a million of them, and enslaving million more (a quote from Julius Ceasar's conquest of Gaul), the world would have been a very very different place. Would there have been anyone left to cross the Rhine in 406 A.D.?
Basically Arminus hard work went to waste.
@@MustafaAli-lb8dq Well Germania was never conquered by Rome, because it was doomed to difficult in the aftermath of the battle and Germanicus campaign. He failed in unifying the germanic tribes but he still upheld their independency from Rome.
What a moronic drivel. Tiberius did nothing and was still praised to the skies only for propaganda. No battles, no torched villages, nothing at all. There is no evidence for the apparently suppressed mutiny by Germanicus, nor that he apparently destroyed everything within a 75 km radius. Germanicus won exactly one battle against the Marsians, against a single tribe. Although he was able to take prisoner Tusnelda, he got his ass kicked by the Teutons in all further battles and had massive losses. And what always happens when battles are lost, which could also be seen in the 3rd Reich, the army leaders and generals are showered with medals and awards and praised beyond all measure. And then they are praised away and transferred. Except for a few ridiculous recovered legionary eagles, he accomplished nothing. Finally, all efforts on the right bank of the Rhine were abandoned because the losses were too high and no progress was made. In the dumbest case, Germanicus bought the eagles and did not even get them back by conquering them. Roman reports are one thing above all. Propaganda and pure Bullshit. Normally, the winner writes the history. Unfortunately, the Teutons carved their runes only in beech wood, which has not survived 2 millennia.
wow... this battle covered by Baz... the best thing ever
"Mr Varus, I don't feel so good."

I comment rarely but ......
well I just wanted to say THANK YOU for your excellent productions. I owe all my knowledge of this subject to you and other RUclips channels. For a student like me who cannot afford to buy many books it is really a blessing to see ( and learn) unbiased true history. Please don't stop. Will become a patron whenever I can.
Thank you.
God bless you.
VARIS, GIVE ME BACK MY LEGIONS
I really wanted to belt that line out with gusto but Baz was like, nah keep it chill
I don't know why he made such a big deal out of it, 3 legions is only 15,000 soldiers. The roman empire at the time could regenerate such a force in a very short period of time. Weren't there like 40 legions across the whole empire ?
@@ahmedibrahim9082 It wasn't that simple
Take the Illyrian rebellion as an example
The romans had to mobilize 6 out of the 9 legions to crush the rebellion.
This left an opening for Arminius to destroy the tree remaining legions.
This would be a constant source of problems down the line
The empire simply didn't have enough troops to manage the several thousands of kilometers between the Rhine and Danube rivers.
Furthermore it wasn't simply the destruction of the legions
It was also twenty years of pacification and attempted assimilation, urbanisation that went down the window.
Video production was amazing, the fog of war and rain really added to the tension, keep it up!
Love the videos! Keep them coming!
Thank you for the upload
I always wondered if Baz would re-upload their original Teutoburg Forest video from years ago, I am just as happy that they remade it.
Wow, I literally only read about this actual battle last week.
Oh and per usual, 'BazBattles your my hero' 😍

I’m planning a trip to Kalkriese to look at the Museum of the Varusschlacht and the battle of the Teutoburgwald and this pops up.
Just make sure to send non-German tour guides ahead first.

"Varus give me back my Legions"
Damn for some reason youtube didn't show me your videos, even tho i have bell notifications on, i forgot about this channel, nice to see it again
So well made.
I literally gasped out loud when I saw the notification 😊
Great video
Great video! Really one of the most resounding defeats the romans ever suffered.
If you're making more modern videos, is there any chance that you could make any about the Spanish Civil War? It's such an interesting war in terms of all the backstories and the way it was sort of a three sided conflict, I'm sure a great video could be made about it.

"Publius Quinctilius Varus. Give me back my legions." - Emperor Augustus
Great vid. Can I say the narrator has a very pleasant voice to listen to?
This was in the show!
I know that background music anywhere! Rome Total War, many long hours spent conquering in the name of Rome. Great video!

Just Vietnamese.
This shows the importance of local knowledge and reconnaissance. If you are on a muddy, narrow path with no room to manoeuvrer then your numbers count for nought.
welcume to teutobrug wald my freinds "sons of mars start playing"
Good video❤
Oh this is gunna be GOOD
GREAT!!
your work is great, congratulations! You could make a video about the Falklands War, it would be awesome.
Nice video
Honey wake up Baz Battles just uploaded another video
Baz battles video= day made
that battle saved humanity
I wondered why Augustus appointed a pen pusher to lead his legions in Germany. But it makes sense that if they considered the area mostly pacified after a decade or so then an administrator was better suited for the job.
Though I don't know why there could not have been one figure to act as governor and administrator and another to act as experienced military commander.
I also wonder how things would have turned out of it was Julius Caesar leading the three legions when Arminius came to him with news of an uprising.
Probably not much better :(
Julius Caesar was a genius who valued patience and information-gathering to a degree non of his contemporaries could match, but Arminius had a 10-year head start on developing a battle-plan.
Legends know this is a remade version
I hear the tense RTW pre-battle music, I upvote 😊
Why did I have the feeling BazBattles was gonna put out their version of the Massacre at Teutoburg Forest(which is kinda moot since this channel originally had a vid of this battle)?
And another thing.....
VARE, VARE, LEGIONES REDDE!!!!
We need more Roman Empire content from BazBattles
"Varus! Give me back my legions!"
9:18 "with only dozens able to escape". i thought they found roman armor and cattle with grass stuffed into the bells around their neck in the surrounding area, meaning that a lot of romans fled the scene but were hunted down.
Make a video and if possible a series about the war against the Dutch in Northeast Brazil. There is an excellent Brazilian bibliography on the subject. Cláudio Moreira Bento's books on the subject are fundamental. The Batalhas dos Guararapes has an enormous historical projection. Brazil's patriots pioneered the principles of Total War 3 centuries earlier and their victories were huge.
4/10 would not recommend Arminius as a guide. Also there is no warranty for killed legions
Yeah, Varus, give the man his legions back.
Give me back my legions!
Disaster is what happens when you place an administrator at the head of an army instead of a General.
Not quite as this was typical Roman practice at the time.
@@karelzjinec Typical but not wise.
@@TheStrategos392 I disagree. Administrator back then wasn't some no name accountant we know in the present. War and military command was part of their job description
@@karelzjinec Well in this particular instance it had disastrous results. There were many situations where in the Roman Empire where you could be a capable general and an administrator, but historians have stated that Varus was not a soldier. His background was politics and administration. He also ruled Germania with a heavy hand which made him
hated by the locals, which is why the battle of the Teutoborg ended up taking place.
Not necessarily so. Varus although considered a civil administrator, is also a capable general and had experience in pacifying newly Romanized territories. His failure to gather sufficient intelligence before going in an operation is a blunder that is also shared by many generals throughout history. Even Napoleon had his share Intelligence failures.
@BazBattles, before kings and generals; before historyMarche; before invicta; before epic history tv, there was you. and i subscribed in you.......... and now, everytime you post, you post old battles which were played out may times already.
hope you could come up with novel ideas >_
Great video! Best documentary channel on YT! I have one question, in which program u make these great maps?
Love d way Arminian’s+changes color from red 2 green. Maybe his name also faded into Herman haha 😆
