Between the artificial scarcity and the continual decline in value, I think I'm more or less done buying Secret Lairs. There's more than enough cool cards being printed in Magic's main sets, and more than enough main sets being printed to take up most of my entertainment budget on their own.
Incredibly good point. Why buy a 30 dollar set of mid cards with one 15 dollar card (that you won’t use) mixed in when you can just buy a new staple for 10 bucks

That combined with the increased shipping cost. If you don't want to buy over $100 worth of product for free shipping then shipping is now $11. I don't have the data but that seems MUCH higher than before. So if you are ever considering a $30 secret lair, might want to think of it as $40~ which makes a big difference.

@@chim007azo Even for the art buying singles is the way to go, if you don´t care about the full lair. In the 2024 drops not a single card is worth more then a whole lair, ignoring the fact, some lairs are more expensive than the others.
I love the evolution of the Secret Lair Alert opening sequences. You all seem to have a lot of fun with it.
As a fan of Assassin's Creed and not owning any of the specific cards(except for the dragon & soul warden) I showed this to my wife. She purchased it as an early Birthday gift for me. I will accept that.
I buy secret lairs often mainly because I do love alternate arts for cards but I 100% preferred the print to demand system they had it gave me time to think
To answer your question - never bought a secret lair. There was one I was excited about, but it sold out before I got off work that day. It was themed well, had great art, and was perfect for my wifes commander deck as it featured her commander in a really nice art style. Despite the value being low and it not being worth it money wise, it was going to be a nice gift with some unique cards, but didn't even get to be that because it was shortly after they changed from the print to order format.
It's crazy because there have been a couple of secret lairs I would have liked to buy but IMAGINE if they were SOLD OUT. It's honestly ridiculous that they aren't giving people the chance to actually buy the product - wouldn't that be a wild idea.
(Edit: I wait for your videos to see what secret lairs are being offered in a particular drop and judge if I would like them, but I can't get excited for it anymore because I'll find out they were sold out last week)
I only bought the two Assassin's Creed ones (Foil) because for the Alt-Art ones I already own the In Universe/Regular cards but I'm building an Assassin deck which will have a good chunk of the new AC cards and some of the old Assassins were already going in it (Like Ramses) so I figured "Eh why not" on having some more AC flavored versions.
The second AC set was just another way for me to get another Darksteel Plate, Whispersilk Cloak and Blade of Selves which look cool (to me) as well as the Flail and Deathrender.
I've never bought a Secret Lair based on a hypothetical resale value, I've only bought a few and it is strictly based on cards I will use and if I like the art (As well as overall price). Though I bought Sheldon's Spellbook to support a good cause.
It's best to compare this product to what Pokemon does. Pokemon also has "illustration cards", cards with beautiful full-art treatment. They are in regular boosters at a 1/13 rate, meaning they are THE MOST COMMON "special drop" you can get from a booster.
I bought both AC secret lairs in foil. I have been a huge fan of the game series (especially Valhalla) and that was the value for me.
I loved the art on them that's why I got the virtuoso bundle. I'm also a huge fan of assassin's creed.

I bought that Thalia Secret Lair back in 2020 because I wanted to build a "budget" Mono white Death & Taxes deck.
Thank goodness I had the card collector version of myself stop collecting every magic release back in 2019.
The only two secret lairs I have bought so far have been the 5 color legends for a fancy Reaper King, and the pride one as a gift for my partner. But I would have gotten the fallout ones had Wizards not screwed over everyone to take advantage of the speculative secondary market. Reminds me of those games cropping up on steam that are just a picture of an object that gives you steam market items to speculate on.
I cannot express how much I loved this intro Prof. Master work by the Editors.
I bought the da vinci secret lair because ive been building da vinci since he got spoiled and am entertained by him as a historical figure, plus i love the designs even if I cant read them

I bought the Julie Bell SL but I'm so annoied with the new system and the value. I bougt Julie Bell because I love the art and run some cards in my commander decks - thats it

I agree with you. The main reason i bought any of the was art style or I was already needing to buy one or 2 of the cards in them for decks.

For me it was more about the art and franchise, i have fond memories playing the early AC games, so i decided to buy them.
I usually never consider the card value when buying a secret lair drop. I usually just consider if I will use the card or if the art is cool. I am a hoarder at heart so I hold on to all my cards whether it's good or not. at the very least I can use it for a trade.
The 2001 Odyssey reference was very clever.
My favorite game is Assassin’s Creed, for that alone I purchased the foil Lethal Legends

I blipped and forgot about the secret lair. I think at this point I'm burnt out trying to keep track for weeks for one I may want only for it to be a busy day at work and forget to check the website. Oof.
After WotC/the billing transaction company wouldn't work with me to correct some billing issues I had with Sheldon's drop, I've soured on Secret Lair in general. The card styling and general card value for drops haven't been appealing to me since then anyway though including this one.
So for me I bought the bundle that had the EN and JP miku cards, the prints of darkness cards, and the not a wolf cards in non foil and I got a set of the EN miku cards in foil as well. I mainly wanted the Miku cards because I'm a big fan of the Project Diva rhythm games that feature miku and the other characters on the cards and combining miku with magic is just so insane to me I have to have the cards. It's two interests that never in my wildest dreams did I think would combine into one thing. I like the art on the prints of darkness cards even though they're unreadable, and I just thought the not a wolf cards were funny and really wanted that wolf token that can be used as a wolf or a human token. I plan on adding a few of the miku cards to my Miku, Lost But Singing commander deck I put together after the last drop. Most of the not a wolf cards also work well in that deck as well as one or two of the prints of darkness cards.
I hate to play devil's advocate here but I do think the current limited system while frustrating is better in the long run for the simple fact that the quality of these cards seem to be better than the print to order and the cards now arrive much sooner than before. I do really wish the actual cards themselves were cards that would be worth the price you're paying for the packs. However, we see far too many of these drops where while the art may be nice or the cards are really useful the value just isn't there from a financial standpoint. It doesn't really bug me that much because I intend on playing with my cards rather than selling them but knowing that I could at the very least get the $30 or $40 back out of them if I really needed to would be nice and that just hasn't been the case with the past several drops with a few exceptions and that is disappointing no matter how you cut it. WOTC ultimately has a really cool and fun idea with secret lair but there is a lot of room for improvement on the product line in several different areas.
I had some money set aside to pick up a few things this drop and just couldn't pull the trigger. Maybe on the next one.
Before the switch to the FOMO model, I bought 5 Secret Lairs, but the infamous phrase "this product is not for you" is all that comes to mind when I think of Secret Lairs now. I love Magic, but I also juggle a few hobbies. If I tried to stay in the know enough to be able to even possibly pick up a decent Secret Lair under the current model, it would just make Magic feel like work to me. My personal preference is to get paid for my work rather than work to pay someone else, so Secret Lairs are no longer on my radar outside of watching your content because I enjoy hearing your thoughts.
Clearly, Wizards doesn't need me since these sell out so quickly, and I'll probably get more enjoyment spending the occasional $30 or $40 on some other hobby, so I guess this just works out best for everyone. The thought is still a little sad for some reason though.
I bought the SL foils of the not a wolf because I really like my wolf deck I have and these cards seem super cool butt man when I got them in the mail only 1 of the foils wasn't warped or whatever its called and it was my commander and maybe the token but I think that was warped also I guess if I do end up getting a SL in the future I def will not be getting foils again.
I don't see how they don't just make value filled cool secret lairs and have them be print-to-demand. They'd just make money.
I think they are considerably worse this way. I like how fast they show up but that’s the only positive aspect. I buy SL for the art, or for Universes Beyond flavor. I love the video game crossovers and the SL gives you stronger ways to fill out your deck while simultaneously adding more flavor.
I imagine going forward, Prof will get a lot of mileage out of that Fear of Missing Out card that just got revealed for these videos.

Only picked up a Japanese Hitsune Miku lair for my sister since she's a fan (and barely so - foil had already sold out), but I skipped all these lairs otherwise. P.S. Appreciated the 2001: A Space Odyssey reference!
Secret Lairs are cool for the art. Recently bought all the amazing art from the Faeries Secret Lair, at a big premium (ouch). Yes, I had the cards in my commander deck, and they are fairly cheap in standard print - but the art can completely change how you enjoy the game or express yourself (as long as you have the premium money to spend, but if you don't just proxy them like a smart person tbh).
This isn't just with Magic, but with everything in life. It sucks that it's all tied to "consumerism" and premium money, but that's everything in capitalism. We just kinda fundamentally enjoy art and expressing ourselves through the small things. I also recently got a new pair of shoes (for the looks), a hoodie from a manga I enjoy, and an art print for my living room. Lucky I get to spend part of my income on nonsense, but the nonsense is enjoyable.
Because of my financial station, there are parts of Magic the Gathering that just don't exist to me: competitive play, masters sets, and secret lairs (among others, of course). They're all the same. Or at least I have to consider them that way because I have no access to them.
I mostly get cards for the art. But definitely my fomo gets to me and i pick up lairs i fear will inflate in the secondary market if i don't get it.
I actually really like the Da Vinci style, but NONE of the cards worked for any of my commander decks. And I have over 50 decks.
I brought the full collection non-foil plus a miku foil, there were cards i wanted from each drop plus, i want to not risk not pulling something like that electromancer.
I was interested in the Leonardo's Sketchbook cards until I saw the lackluster equipment they chose. They could have picked things he'd actually designed.
I don't even know what Secret Lairs I missed. I fear I missed out on the fear of missing out.

At least the da Vinci lair *has* the text on them. I don't find it that illegible either compared to some they've done. But, yeah, not great.
I bought the Legends reskinned assassin´s creed one, I want to make an Ezio auditiore commander deck, and having an in universe ramses reprint fits perfectly. Since najeela is a warrior she won´t make it into the deck, and she pays for the cost of the secret lair, so in my mind I got free cards.
im only really picking up the miku ones for two reasons, i have a ninja's typal deck based on the anime art from the NEO set and i am a fan of miku. otherwise, a lot of Secret lairs i will probably pass on by and buy singles barring a few other IPs
I'm a HUGE Assassin's Creed fan and I was on the Secret Lair site at the minute they went live and only bought the Assassin's Creed Secret Lairs because those were the only ones I cared about. I didn't care about the Hitsune Miku Secret Lairs or the others. I am surprised that the Assassin's Creed Secret Lairs (as of time of writing) are still up. But I will say, I absolutely DESPISE this "limited amount" version instead what WOTC did before which was print for demand, having a pre order window. I hate how it's this "limited amout" version because, as The Professor has said before, it creates this fake "fear of missing out" that WOTC creates and it helps scalpers be even worse than ever with these sets. I REALLY WISH that WOTC would go back to the print for demand, limited window like they had before. Not this...... Cause now, if people want any of the Hitsune Miku Secret Lairs, they have to buy it from the scalpers.
Did you see the new card "Fear of Missing Out"? Someone on reddit posted they used your faces from these thumbnails for the ghosts and I want to believe it's true.
Its always that this cheap chashgrab of Secret Lair sells so good.
I did buy the Hatsune Miku foil one for a friend who likes Hatsune Miku stuff, but that was about it. I only did it because it dropped during my break time. More often than not, I tend to miss these Secret Lairs and I just go "oh well" and skip over it unless I can get it second hand for like a buck because it's not one that's commonly played.
There definitely feels like there's a lot less effort put into Secret Lairs, most notably their designs. It's hard to appreciate the card when it stands out and looks nothing like a MTG card.
Sure in the end of the day you can get them cheaper but also do what ya wanna do lol. I’ve never got any secret lair cards and as I am a big fan of assassins creed I’m down to pay at least once for theses types of cards I actually like?

I agree that the secret lairs are more or less crap now. HOWEVER, I am a big Assassin's Creed fan and a massive Italian Renaissance fan, so I knew I had to have both of those lairs (actually two of the Da Vinci sketch lairs). But yeah, WotC needs to figure something out because more often than not, lairs are just not worth it.

I actually kinda sad about what WotC is doing with secret lairs. I remember a time where i could save up money and buy some of these without having to worry about a queue system or people boting the system. I wish WotC would fix this issue by allowing consumers to buy without the queue and help fans enjoy what they want. Its better for the company and would make more profits
I'm only buying Secret Lairs for the art at this point. If I see one I like, I get it. I know their intent is to create FOMO, but because they release so many, I think it's having the opposite effect. If this one sells out, I know there will be something else in a few weeks.

I'm really unhappy with the new secret lair method. My mom passed away and I was planning her funeral so missed the lair I wanted. It wasn't even great value, I just loved the cards in it. No chance for me though, had to get it right away or never again.

I wanted the da Vinchi's Designs lair under the principle of liking the art style. However, I refuse to purchase any Secret Lairs while the limited print run FOMO engine continues and I have a personal standing moratorium on purchasing most any sealed products by WotC because of their ongoing, wide-ranging bullshittery.
I am debating picking up the singles later, but I also don't want to feed the scalpers.

Prof, I would love to see a video of Magic's "perfect customer", who buys literally every Magic product as it comes out over the course of 2024 and then put up a grand total at the end of the calendar year. The "perfect customer" would buy every secret lair, all Commander decks, a pre-release kit, a bundle, a play booster box, and a collector booster box for every set in Magic over the course of one year. Then, don't forget to add a box of each set for Arena for 2024 as well. Starter decks, Game Night 3? kits, + any other Magic product I'm forgetting, like another random reboot of another set. It'd be hilarious to see what Magic profits pushed to the absolute max would be.
I think it would be telling to check the AVERAGE customer who purchases product and what/how much they purchase
Purchasing every damn thing is just the lower echelon of Whale (and by that I mean lowe range of still BEING a whale, but not a super whale)
I'm fairly certain WotC intentionally moved away from the idea of people keeping up with their release schedule. They probably know their average customers well enough to know how to milk us best. I know that I will splash out without remorse if a product hits my sweet spot, but I have long since given up on being a completionist.

Screw the new Secret Lair System. Sheldon’s spellbook was the last Secret Lair I bought and I will definitely not buy a Secret Lair that is tied to the “Sold Out” model. They are already FOMO products. I used to love Secret Lair, but they find a way to ruin just about anything.
To me, the availability is too short to even trigger FOMO. If there isn't enough time for me to come home from work, look at the product and think about if I want to buy it, then this product is really not for me. It's for the people who have the time to arrange their days so they can be ready to buy it.

The print to demand style from before is in every way better than the limited supply run version we have now. I did cave and buy both Hatsune Miku Secret Lairs as she's a top 3 character for me personally and vocaloid was a major part of my childhood growing up.
Better for us customers, for sure. But from WotCs point of view it's probably more profitable to be able to fix production slots and logistics a long time ahead of release. I wouldn't be surprised if a few years down the road they'll start to repeat the highly successful ones.

I have only ever bought 2 Secret Lair Drops: the Cats and Dogs commander deck and the yet to be received Sheldon Menery Secret Lair. I mostly bought them for the art. The charity donation on the Sheldon Secret Lair was also a factor.
I bought the cute to brute commander deck... I no longer am interested in SL commander decks...
