I have one that is 13 years old and 2 others that are 10 and 8 years old. I kept them in the same pots with the coloured sleeve on the outside of the pots. I have them in a west facing window in southern Ontario, Canada. They oldest one is about 5 ft tall now. I never repotted them until this past summer. Very seldom did I fertilize them as well. I admit that I probably overwatered a lot. Two are red and the other one is a white poinsettia. They would bloom the colours in April or May but finally this Christmas, they bloomed the beautiful colours. They have smaller mostly green leaves but splattered with colour throughout. I don’t do anything but water every few days and leave on the same table in the window all year round. People are amazed when they come over and see them.

Poinsettias come in other colors than just red. There are pink, white & variegated ones as well. Watering is important and drainage is critical, but don’t let them dry out.
Thank you for this informative video. It's mid-July and my poinsettia plant is still alive! Miraculous because I've historically had a brown thumb. Going to try to get it to bloom this next Christmas.
Didn’t realize the poinsettia is a euphorbia! Have heard that name a lot when referring to other plants in this family, but never heard the scientific name of the poinsettia, so didn’t know it was also a euphorbia.
Thank you for this video. I am always just happy that mine lasts to the end of Christmas. I got a couple as gifts and would love to keep them longer. I will remove the sleeves to give them proper drainage and will see what happens.
I grow a variety of plants but I’ve never tried growing a poinsettia. My landlord found one that he threw away two years ago that had strong roots and quite a few nice green leaves so he brought it to me saying since he noticed my green thumb (lol) he thought I would be able to bring it back to full life….🤔 I didn’t know anything about them, but I came across your video and you gave some really good tips and now I think I can start caring for this beautiful plant and see if I can bring it back to blooming🤷🏻♀️ Thank you for sharing your knowledge!!
@@juucize I just kept watering it when the soil dried out, even after the leaves fell off. Then I put it outside all summer. Took it in when it started getting down below 50 at night. It got probably like 25% bigger from last year. It's got a bunch of red leaves now too.
I repotted my poinsettias in a terra cotta pot and let it grow all spring and summer outside. As soon as it started getting cool outside here in Southeast Texas the top leaves started turning red and they now have the tiny buds in the center.
I live on the central ciast- in 1983, I salvaged 6 poinsettias from the dumoster of my local Thrifty's, the gardner ( from Mexico) at my apartment whacked them down to two feet tall, they are 10 feet tall now & they are still being cut back annually. Until that first fall I had no idea they were like bananas, they grow huge every year! I love to visit them!
Mine have been planted in the ground for close to 3 years now. They are on the north side of my house and get a lot of bright sun, no direct sun but a lot of wind. I live in zone 9 where the heat can go well over 100°. Last February we had one of the hardest freezes that lasted days. I was so sure my poinsettias were doomed. Well, I gotta tell you they survived and have grown to be over 4’ tall. They have never turned red again but I’m going to see if I can help them bloom that lovely color if not this year then definitely next year.
My dad and grandma grew one to become a tree in their apartment. (It was a white one, from three really good and healthy plants.) I bought one a year ago (a red one) and it keeps growing. Dad likes to sit up at nights. So do I. Both plants have been getting a lot of light from our lamps at night. And they've been growing like crazy. So - my theory is, they LOVE light. yes, as green plants, none of that fancy-colored leaves, but still :-)
I recall many years ago I planted one outside after Christmas at a condo I lived in Orange County mainly because I didn’t want to just throw it away. I did nothing to it and it grew to a fairly large bush and then “bloomed” back to bright red during the summer, which was a surprise to me because I knew nothing about them.
Thanks! Great information 👍🏾 I rescued four poinsettias last year. Seems common to just toss them after the holidays. I used to do the same. The four are now bunched together in a wicker basket 🧺 a couple still in the wrapper. Running now to free them. LoL. The leaves are dark green. They receive morning sun from east. Plan was to increase darkness in October but too busy. Hopefully next year. Also still caring for a poinsettia gifted to my Christmas 2019. It has been in a clay pot for over a year. Que viva Poinsettias 🎊🎉🌺
I was going to get up to do something more productive than watching RUclips for an hour...but then your video appeared. My mother has had a poinsettia for 2-3 years now and this year it's leaves started turning red without any direct influence from us shortly before Thanksgiving. For most of the year it sits outside in bright, indirect light but is currently blooming in a temporary greenhouse. The red bracts are not as prominent not having been forced but it's beautiful nonetheless. I also love that it's in the euphorbia family since I have a number of its succulent cousins in my collection.
@@epicgardening Agreed. I failed to mention in my comment that this is the first time either of us have witnessed that natural process in person and it's really rather exciting to watch. Thanks for all the great info!
I've kept one alive for four years now. It gets a cut back at Easter and a pinch back after the 4th of July. All I do for a forced bloom is put it in a east facing room with only natural light at the end of September and by Thanksgiving it is showing color. I live in Virginia.
Thanks Kevin, it is indeed a holiday favourite! Here in Australia poinsettias are just as popular during this season and mine is looking very nice on my front porch. It is probably the one and only advantage to having Christmas in Summer - the poinsettias are in their element!
When we moved into our rental home in Germany there was a pot on the back patio that was left by the military members that had rented it before. I was a stick in a pot so I never paid it any attention. Winter came and then spring came and we decided to clear the patio area so we could enjoy it when I came home from the base. I saw the pot and started to pick it up and toss it but it had this tiny little leaf on it. I told my wife that this plant wanted to live so I re-potted it and took care not to over water. I placed it in the window of our dining room and on a marble window sill that was over the heating radiator for that part of the house. It grew and grew until it had reached about 12 inches before the next winter came. During the winter we would always open that huge window just a small little bit and the cold moist air would float into the house and as it did it wafted through the plant. I was totally unequipped on how to take care of a poinsettia so I was just flying with what I felt was right. I knew that it was originally a tropical plant but it seemed to have weathered the first winter just fine and now it kept growing and by Thanksgiving it had grown to almost 2 1/2 feet in height and 3 feet+ in diameter. The entire plant had turned red except a small band of green leaves near the bottom. The Germans were just fascinated by that plant and would stop in front of our house everyday just to see its growth and progress. After the winter I received orders to go back to the States and could not take it with me so my wife and I decided to share in our joy of all of the plants that I had raised from cuttings that I had swapped with others (we had 70 varieties of plants around our house so we didn't lack fresh air or beauty in our home. So we decided to give all of our plants to our neighbor across the street. And when it came to the poinsettia we took it first and asked her husband if she wanted them? She did. It was the poinsettia that took up her front window because I had found the secret. The radiator kept the roots warm and the cold moist air kept the leaves moist. Coming back to the states I keep asking people if I can have their poinsettias before they completely die. I was shocked at how many people will not part with their poinsettias until it is completely dead and gets thrown away.
I have a poinsettia in my room and I actually don't have high hopes for it blooming so nice and red since when I got it, it didn't look fresh, got it for free though so I've got nothing to complain 😅😂 however it lasted the whole December which I'm so glad! Right now most of the bracts and leaves are falling, but it started sprouting leaves so I might as well give it a try and continue taking care of it ☺️
When i was growing we had a huge tree like this in our yard..it would be this bright red every Christmas season we called it our Christmas tree...right here in the Caribbean
My two grocery store poinsettias from last year are happy and thriving! Lost their last red leaves in October. Probably will never attempt to rebloom them, but we'll see.
I may get one of these as a neighbor for my Thanksgiving cactus, which has been doing well for a few years. I've cut down on houseplants since I want to focus mainly on growing edible things and starts for gardening, so having two things that grow in the same condition would be perfect.
I was looking at your tomato video, went to your page and this was the first video and I knew I had to watch it. My mother always this plant during December.
I have 3 large poinsettia, I have had them for 2 yrs. They are 3 different colors, my red and pink poinsettia colors up very nicely for the Christmas season, but my white and pink hardly changes color, most of the leaves starts green
Hey Kevin I noticed that you kept saying that it's not cold tolerate, I have been growing a poinsettia all this past summer outside and it grew to about three feet tall by two feet wide and I still have it outside and it's October in Philadelphia pa and I have new growth points still and it's been getting down to the mid forties at night so I think they are more tolerant than you think. Keep in mind we didn't get our first frost yet and the time I'm writing this it's October tenth 2023. I'm going to bring it in tonight so I can give it the fourteen hour dark treatment for the leaves to turn red!
Thank u. A friend bought me this plant around three years ago (her last Christmas). I treasure it but it's beautiful red colour would never appear in time for Christmas...now I know why lol.....next Christmas 🤞. Merry Christmas from the UK🎄
Well, I'm here to say that, yes, if you can manage to get a poinsettia through the first winter -- even if it only has a few leaves left -- you can grow it in the summer. I live in zone 5 (NJ) and am now the proud owner of a massive poinsettia. I think it's about 4 or 5 years old. It stands 5-ft tall, at least, in its pot. This last summer it grew tremendously. (If I could post pictures, I would.) Also, while they may not like direct sunlight in the summer, they love it in the winter, at least in my zone. (Maybe because the light is weaker?) But I've found a good way to get them through the first winter is to create a little terrarium around them by watering them well, then tent them in a large clear plastic bag (be sure the bag is sealed) and placing them in direct sunlight. They'll look better in February than they did in December. However, I am now having a lot of trouble (it's early December), because no matter how hard I try, I cannot seem to stop it from losing leaves. I brought it in (barely fit through the door) in September when it was a huge, bushy tree. Since then all it's done is lose leaves. To combat this, I have: 1) Spritzed 6-8 times a day (which worked last winter) 2) Added a humidifier (I do have a very dry apartment) 3) Added a vaporizer (which is concerning because everything is so wet, I worry I'm damaging the walls of my apartment) 4) And even kept my bathtub filled with water, which does seem to add some ambient humidity to the air. All this to increase the humidity. At this point, I am spritzing it twice a day, then immediately running the vaporizer directly under it with Vaporub for about 5 minutes on each side, hoping it will help seal in the moisture on the leaves (similar to putting cream on your hands to avoid dry skin.) And, of course, I water it thoroughly twice a week. The plant seems somewhat better with the Vaporub, believe it or not, but I still see the earmarks of early leaf dryness (the edges turn whiteish). But at this point, it's lost more than 50% of its foliage and I'm not sure it will make it to the spring. :\ I'm even thinking of asking a local nursery if they will take it a keep it in their greenhouse over the winter. The only thing I haven't tried is fertilizing in the winter. I'll start that next time I water. Any other suggestions? Oh... one thing I'd also like to add is, when you clip it back, you can simply repot them and they will grow into new poinsettias. BTW, covering a poinsettia with a black garbage bag is a quick way to force bracting.
I had more to say but apparently I used up my limit. Just this: I haven't tried fertilizing but I will try that next (didn't think it was a good idea in the winter).
I thought leaves breathe through their undersides, and you should only gloss the top sides? I remember this from a tropical plant I had.. the advice at the time was to rub mayonnaise in to it. That might be better than using vaporub, which is a petroleum product.
@@cherylmockotr Sorry, I was unclear. I don't put VapoRub directly on the leaves. My vaporizer has special little mentholated "patches" made by VapoRub that you add to the vaporizer to produce the same effect.
@@marigeobrien mine has made it through the winter, with poor care on my part. But I did set the pit on top of a tray filled with pebbles, which I kept filled with water half the time. It seems to have been enough. Half the leaves fell off but it is growing new ones and new bracts, too. I'll put it outdoors next week and I'm sure it will be much happier!
Update: @@cherylmockotr Well, unfortunately, while it was doing great in the early spring, regenerating its leaves nicely, something went wrong and it died. :( I hadn't cut it back or brought it outside yet-- in fact, though I knew it was suffering, I went ahead and took it outside in May and crossed my fingers. But, no. Nothing happened. In June, I trimmed it back, hoping that might stimulate its growth. But, no. So. I'm still in mourning. To help console me, I do have a 2nd poinsettia that did well through the winter and is doing great. I forgot to trim it in May, just before I repotted it, but I plan to trim it for the fall.
Thank you for the video. Perfect timing. Someone just gifted me this beautiful plant and I was like oh man I hope I don't kill it. 😂 will follow up with the care. Thank you. Merry Christmas!

Hey Kevin, You can force the darkness on kalanchoe too! Yeah the one they call flaming Katy. I did it to one of mine a few weeks ago and now it's flowering. I've always been interested in growing some poinsettias but I've been a little intimidated by the thought, But now that I watched this I think I'll give it a try but I think I'm going to let it grow out some so I can plant a few of them.. Hey thanks for the video and have a great holiday season!!!!
they will live for years as a house plant, they had one at our church that was 15 years old, it was huge, and believe it or not it was by the door haha
I really enjoy your videos. I received a poinsettia as a gift but it is planted with two other plants and I was wondering if in order to keep my poinsettia would I need to transplant all three plants into new planters and then follow your instructions for maintaining the poinsettia plant? I am not sure what the other two plants are.
Could you do a video on frosted ferns? They’re also plants that appear in stores this time of year and not many people know how to properly take care of
Fun fact: (haven't finished the video yet, but didn't seem like it would be mentioned) - the Poinsettia is the national flower of Madagascar ❤️ Which, of course, is in the height of summer in December ❤️☺️
I see you ask for video suggestions. Not sure if it goes here but how about a sunflower video? Do we pre-soak the seeds? How deep? When? No one else has any “good” videos. Thanks!
I saw some artificially dyed poinsettias today!! Lavender and light blue - not cute. I never knew these could last I think I’ll try harder this year 🎄🌱 thanks!!
I see light blue artificial coloured plants sold a lot near me :( Then my friends and family wonder why their blue plants turn pink or purple. I'd much rather buy a natural colour and have the plant be what it wants to be 🤷♀️

I always repot my Poinsetta- last 3-4 years - still bloom for this X.Mas .
❤ Love winter rose (Poinsetta).
Make sure water
Didn’t realize the poinsettia is a euphorbia! Have heard that name a lot when referring to other plants in this family, but never heard the scientific name of the poinsettia, so didn’t know it was also a euphorbia.
Thank you for this video. I am always just happy that mine lasts to the end of Christmas. I got a couple as gifts and would love to keep them longer. I will remove the sleeves to give them proper drainage and will see what happens.
I still have poinsettia from last Christmas 🎄 and she’s thriving! Hope to get one more this year to keep and grow
Nothing to do with Poinsettas but I watched your broccoli video and yesterday I saw my first baby broccoli appear and I’m so excited!!
This is my first year buying one now that I’m an adult 😅 and I plant to keep it as long as I can, thank you for all this great info❤
I managed to keep the one someone gave me last Christmas alive this whole past year. I'm pretty proud of myself.
How???
Well done!
Thanks!
Just bought a white one! Can't wait to hear this episode! :)
Hope you enjoy it!
I've seen trees two stories tall. They grow wild in San Diego
Yes they do!
Thanks! Great information 👍🏾
I rescued four poinsettias last year.
That'll definitely happen! We have to remember they would naturally flower anyways, this forcing is just an extremist approach to it
@@epicgardening Agreed. I failed to mention in my comment that this is the first time either of us have witnessed that natural process in person and it's really rather exciting to watch.
Thanks for all the great info!
how do you deal when the bracts are all curled over. It is a pink colour.
It's like you read my mind.
Or my search history.
Or both :P
@@epicgardening Scary..
Yeah
Would love to aee another video when you get this particular plant ready for summer growing.
I've kept one alive for four years now. It gets a cut back at Easter and a pinch back after the 4th of July. All I do for a forced bloom is put it in a east facing room with only natural light at the end of September and by Thanksgiving it is showing color. I live in Virginia.
Nice.🇹🇹
Thank you. I can remember this
Thanks Kevin, it is indeed a holiday favourite!
Here in Australia poinsettias are just as popular during this season and mine is looking very nice on my front porch. It is probably the one and only advantage to having Christmas in Summer - the poinsettias are in their element!
Just bought a poinsettia for the first time this year- very helpful video!
We have one in fl in full sun all day and afternoon never water it or feed it it's about 15 feet tall and maybe 8 ft wide. A huge gorgeous tree
Great information. Thank you very much!!!
Thank you for sharing the video above.
Merry Christmas 🎅 🎄❤ 🎄
I have a poinsettia in my room and I actually don't have high hopes for it blooming so nice and red since when I got it, it didn't look fresh, got it for free though so I've got nothing to complain 😅😂 however it lasted the whole December which I'm so glad! Right now most of the bracts and leaves are falling, but it started sprouting leaves so I might as well give it a try and continue taking care of it ☺️
One year, we passed a Lowes a day or to after Christmas and saw racks of them ready to be tossed.
Never had to buy another one since!
I just thought yesterday “I wish Kevin would do a video on poinsettias”. And BINGO! Wishes really DO come true! Thanks so much!
Your wish came true...whoa
When i was growing we had a huge tree like this in our yard..it would be this bright red every Christmas season we called it our Christmas tree...right here in the Caribbean
I cut small branches (winter rose)
plant in my back yard .
Doing real well.
Easy care - water offten.
My two grocery store poinsettias from last year are happy and thriving! Lost their last red leaves in October. Probably will never attempt to rebloom them, but we'll see.
I may get one of these as a neighbor for my Thanksgiving cactus, which has been doing well for a few years. I've cut down on houseplants since I want to focus mainly on growing edible things and starts for gardening, so having two things that grow in the same condition would be perfect.
at work we just threw left over coffee in the pot, worked great haha!
I bought one yesterday pink one beautiful
I was looking at your tomato video, went to your page and this was the first video and I knew I had to watch it. My mother always this plant during December.
Thank you, I have never owned a poinsettia, so this information is very helpful!
Wow! I'm going to do this what a botanist flex
I have 3 large poinsettia, I have had them for 2 yrs. They are 3 different colors, my red and pink poinsettia colors up very nicely for the Christmas season, but my white and pink hardly changes color, most of the leaves starts green
Poinsettias are so pretty
Her last?
I was thinking of planting these in the ground in Florida.
It totally works
Well, I'm here to say that, yes, if you can manage to get a poinsettia through the first winter -- even if it only has a few leaves left -- you can grow it in the summer. I live in zone 5 (NJ) and am now the proud owner of a massive poinsettia. I think it's about 4 or 5 years old. It stands 5-ft tall, at least, in its pot. This last summer it grew tremendously. (If I could post pictures, I would.)
Also, while they may not like direct sunlight in the summer, they love it in the winter, at least in my zone.
To combat this, I have:
1) Spritzed 6-8 times a day (which worked last winter)
2) Added a humidifier (I do have a very dry apartment)
3) Added a vaporizer (which is concerning because everything is so wet, I worry I'm damaging the walls of my apartment)
4) And even kept my bathtub filled with water, which does seem to add some ambient humidity to the air.
Thank you for pronouncing this plant correctly!
Thank you for the video. Perfect timing. Someone just gifted me this beautiful plant and I was like oh man I hope I don't kill it. 😂 will follow up with the care. Thank you. Merry Christmas!
I didn't realize they were so delicate
wow i had no idea they could grow so tall!
ps your christmas tree looks great 🎄
Kept mine for years! I would bring it out in summer. For flowering purposes put it in my closet pull it out put it back. A real PIA 😂 I eventually let her go. Didn’t have the space she was about two feet at that point very beautiful and put a lot of effort into her.
Hey Kevin,
You can force the darkness on kalanchoe too!
Hey thanks for the video and have a great holiday season!!!!
lost count of all the great tips to keep my poinsettias thriving for years… 🐸
He is so cute!
they will live for years as a house plant, they had one at our church that was 15 years old, it was huge, and believe it or not it was by the door haha
Thanks for the info! I've just bought one of these beauties :)
Thanks!
hey, can you please show temps in celsius on the screen when you're talking about temps? that would be so helpful
Our poinsettia lost all its bottom leaves so thank you for this! :P
wow! I had no idea about any of the information you shared. Reminds me of a bougainvillea. Lovely!
Hi love your channel you are the best keep up the good work
Mine decided to bloom for the second time just in time for Christmas and I did nothing to but water it.
Watching this two years later! Thanks Eric ;)
Merry Christmas
I saw some artificially dyed poinsettias today!! Lavender and light blue - not cute. I never knew these could last I think I’ll try harder this year 🎄🌱 thanks!!
Wow lame!
I see light blue artificial coloured plants sold a lot near me :( Then my friends and family wonder why their blue plants turn pink or purple. I'd much rather buy a natural colour and have the plant be what it wants to be 🤷♀️
Can you doa video on plants that can grow indoor with little to no sun?
Thanks!
