  • In today's video, we talk about The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion's 3 most annoying quests. There are most certainly other quests that can be put on this list, however these were compiled off of community forums and personal experiences. Whether these quests make you go from city to city, asking for help during a certain crisis, or going on the game's longest and most difficult fetch quest, or have you asking for certain permissions from the guild factions, these are sure to leave a bad taste in the Hero of Kvatch's mouth. Beginner players in Cyrodil might enjoy going on these quests, but seasoned players know exactly how bad and irritating these can be and might outright avoid them altogether. Don't forget to like, comment and subscribe!

      Oblivion gates become a lot more tolerable when you have high speed and acrobatics/spells that give you high speed and acrobatics. It almost becomes a challenge to see how fast you can get through each gate.
      And if you happen upon a shock ring that resists 100% shock damage, you pretty much take zero damage too.

    I actually really enjoy "Seeking Your Roots." I've always been a fan of those "collect-a-thon" style of platformers, and "Seeking Your Roots" is the closest thing the Elder Scrolls games have to that sort of thing.
    It helps that, from the start, I was really, _really_ big on not using them in Alchemy, as I realized they didn't respawn when the entire plant disappeared.

    For the Allies for Bruma quest, there are two gates, from what I can recall, that spawn naturally outside two cities that you can close early. You can close them well before the quest, but the annoying part of it is that they reopen again so you have to do it twice. I don't mind Oblivion Gates since they have amazing loot, but the fact that game doesn't recognize your efforts is annoying. That, and I had no idea for the LONGEST that the quest was optional.

    • @ABardsBallad
      @ABardsBallad  8 месяцев назад

      Very true! I think Chorrol might have a gate opened outside of it before hand but I’d have to fact check that!

  • @Vandal_Savage
    @Vandal_Savage 8 месяцев назад +5

    I really liked closing the oblivion gates, it was one of my favourite things to do. Especially as i would quicksave just before picking up the sigil stone and check my inventory immediately after to see if it was one i wanted - and if it wasn't, quickload and pick it up again until I'd got the one i wanted.
    They were always full of good loot and had minimal and easy to kill enemies.
    I would also spend ages dragging all of the heavy loot to the top of the towers and pick it up before i took the stone and got teleported out even though i was over encumbered.
    Dropping it on the floor when i returned so that i could move and come back and collect it later.
    I'd spent quite some time looking for more gates to close until i finally found out that you could only close a maximum of 60 before they were all closed for good. 🤣

    • @ABardsBallad
      @ABardsBallad  8 месяцев назад +2

      The sigil stones are quite useful items so that’s definitely a good reason to like them! I’ve also been hearing the loot is decent too from Oblivion Gates!

    • @Vandal_Savage
      @Vandal_Savage 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@ABardsBallad the loot (like the enemies and sigil stones) is leveled so the higher the level you are - the better the loot is...
      I collected enough top level sigil stones of the feather variety (I think it was + 125 feathers ? - I might be misremembering though) to enchant a full suit of pure madness armour.
      It meant that I could carry away every single thing in a dungeon (that could be carried away) in a single visit!
      Also, as a weird side effect it boosted my characters jumping ability (but only when his pockets were empty) 😂

      @@QuantemDeconstructor essentially anything that resembles something written with a functioning brain would clear Skyrim’s line, and oblivion is barely that as much as I love it. I at least appreciate that there’s some effort involved in getting into the arcane university, but it’s equally able to be cleared with zero magic skill, and even the most creative tasks like the ring in the well fall apart if you turn your brain on slightly (why would the first associate choose to hold onto the ring and drown himself in a well with a ladder before letting it go, climbing out and reporting back to the guild hall for some prep, for example).
      Again, I love oblivion, but the mage’s guild is easily the worst written line in the game. worst overall is more subjective, depending on if players prefer the fighters or mage’s guild.

    Personally I've always played Oblivion, and most other Bethesda games, as a very "Do it on the way" style game. I (or rather my adhd) will pick a quest and if it takes me to Kvatch then I tackle the stuff in and on the way to Kvatch. Granted there are many different playstyles and different outlooks on each quest so I can diffidently see how these could become tedious or annoying (especially the Nirnroot one; scarred me so bad I hoarded them in Skyrim first time I played)

      @@ABardsBallad regardless of play style I do believe that the nirnroot quest is a bit much unless you're geared towards collectathon style games. I personally would have liked if they had little side quests that allowed you to find a stash with several of them or have them scattered around quest locations, kind of like the stones of barenzhia in Skyrim, so you're substantially more likely to come across them as you play or have a solid idea where to find them.

    I really like it, when you need to collect recommendations, it feels much more realistic than the Skyrim take, where a newbie is sent on a big journey at start, this misses so much realism, imho
    letting the player run these errands feels that you really earn it to be authorized in the college.
    Ok, i have to admit closing every gate near the cities can be a bit tedious, on the other hand you can get a lot of xp for your fresh main character and get a lot of loot, which can be sold to pay trainers, spells and other stuff.
    Seeking your roots can be a little annoying since there is no reward except money in vanilla, on the other hand you have to travel across the land either way, what's the point collecting a few ingedients on the way.
    I personally prefer these quests over the boring Skyrim radiant quests, since they are endless end senseless.
    But as we all know, the earlier Bethesda games were much better than the newer ones, since there are really no radiant quests in this game, even if they are simple, they are much better than the typical Skyrim radiant quest.
    But that is Bethesda of today, imho Daggerfall and Morrowind were so much better than their later games, Todd Howard destroyed everything, what made the old games great, in cutting old
    and loved mechanisms for boring quests, lazy gameplay and lore faults, always looking for a way to make money with old copy-pasted crap.
    Sadly Bethesda is creatively bankrupt and i won't buy more games of them, Oblivion was not their best game but imho much better than the new releases of today.

    I'd say the most annoying quests are the master training quests, if you're going for the completion. Some of the requirements just waste your time or make you chase down some random object. Alteration training requires you to be underwater with the trainer for 3 in-game hours, unless you're an argonian, and speechcraft training requires you to speak to every beggar in the game. At least they're mostly not necessary quests, just for completion, but still annoying AF

  • @ChipsChallenge95

    The most annoying quests to me are actually back to back to back, getting the items to open the portal to Mankar Cameron’s paradise. Having to give up a daedric artifact is annoying, the Sancre Tor quest is annoying, and the Great Welkynd Stone quest (Miscarcand) is annoying. Allies for Bruma is obviously the worst but it’s optional (which makes it worse because it makes zero difference to me if unnamed infinitely respawning NPCs are killed)

  • @StormEagleCH
    @StormEagleCH 8 месяцев назад +1

    I recently completed my first playthrough of the main quest, and while I enjoyed it overall, Allies for Bruma was definitely a low point in my eyes. The first gate I closed was actually the one outside Cheydinhal, which was the only one with an actual side quest attached to it (the one with the son of the count). From then on, I was expecting every gate to have a side quest relevant to the respective town attached, but I soon found out that was not going to be the case. I just happened to start with the odd one out.
    As I was mindlessly speedrunning the last couple gates, I kept comparing Allies for Bruma to a certain quest from Fallout New Vegas: No, Not Much. Similar premise with having to go to the different NCR bases to gather troops and support for Bitter Springs, but each base will only send help once you resolved their relevant side quests: Rooting out the spy in McCarran, taking back Nelson for Forlorn Hope, and shaping up the Misfits at Golf (or you could just bypass them all with high NCR reputation, but that's no fun). That's how I would've liked to see Allies for Bruma handled.
    Obviously, that would've required having to come up with seven different quests as opposed to just three in New Vegas, and maybe they simply didn't have the time or manpower to do so. It just feels weird that there's this one random side quest attached to the gates opening up. I would've preferred for them to go all the way or not at all.

    I found the Xidillian quest from Shivering Isles to be pretty redundant after the first couple of run throughs, not the rest of shivering isles so much, but that one got to me after awhile, and you get dawnfang/duskfang, which is super cool and also pretty good if I'm remembering right, but you don't really get any quest attached to it, which feels like a missed opportunity, given the contents of the orcs journal about the blade. It could even be a nother Sheogorath thing, where he's just screwing with you for shits and giggles. I do agree with these choices, I don't really mind most of the mages guild quests however the one for Chorrol just feels so tedious on repeat playthroughs that it colors the rest of them for me since it's brooding at the back of my mind.

    I personally really like the mages's guild making you do stupid tasks. In contrast to Skyrim where you are basically immediately considered someone of enough skill and importance, despite them not knowing you yet (which is true for all guilds/factions except the thieves guild, but with the worst offender being the companions). The only reason seasoned players want access to the mages guild anyway is to get access to the spell maker and the enchanter. But on the basis of story telling? It is fine, it teaches you about magic schools and their application, which is what an apprentice mage would most likely spend their time doing.

    Your being disingenuous about the nirn root quest. The quest is an optional side quest, it is not meant to be done all at once either, rather as you are exploring the world on other quests you collect the roots as you find them and finally the quest is multi stage and you can turn-it-in in stages gaining different levels of completion as you gain more. Full completion is NOT necessary in ANY way. ALSO you are being disingenuous about allies for Bruma. I have completed the game with or without. It's no big deal either way. First you claim that the Guard replacements are far weaker then the city guards and make it hard to beat the HORDES (Lets be real the battle isn't that big and there are hardly HORDES) of Dedra but then at the end of your statement you say that you do ALL THIS FOR VERY MINIMAL HELP FROM THE GUARDS!!! Which is it. Are the guards SO MUCH MORE POWERFUL??? Or are they just MINIMAL HELP???? Oh and even the Mages Guild quests are not how you make them out to be. They are just a series of small quests in a larger quest LINE. I fail to even see what the gripe is with this one? In the end the only thing you have hit correctly is the fact that MOST people don't like doing a bunch of repetitive Oblivion gates. But as you said they are OPTIONAL and NOT doing them is of little consequence in the battle for Bruma. You should also at least also mention that while completing allies for Bruma you have the opportunity to pick up the secret hidden super op weapons Hatreds Heart and my personal favorite Hatreds Soul and it's matching arrows.

      Hey there! I appreciate you taking the time to comment this! So let’s begin with Seeking Your Roots. While not explicitly stated, given the nature of the quests and the context given, it is easy to infer that this quest is meant to be done over a long period. However, imagine doing this quest and spending so much time and effort into it only to receive potions at the end… not a very good reward! I also said multiple times that every quest is optional. For allies for bruma, I stand by what I said, by not getting help, the fight will be hard, by getting help, your still going to have a tough time and will likely kill most of the Daedra. If anything, it will just help you not die when the city guard is there. The wording of Hordes is correct, if you need extra reference look at the google definition. Over and over again I say if it’s your first time you will enjoy these quests if it’s your first time. Most seasoned players don’t like doing these quests and 7 boring recommendations for the mages guild is equally as bad. The one thing I agree with here is I should have mentioned some of the weapons you get, but at the end of the day there are always better weapons from easier quests. I don’t think I have been disingenuous at all. Please rewatch the the video and you’ll see most of your points have been answered already. I always welcome criticism but there isn’t much from this comment

      @@ABardsBallad I have over 800 hours in Oblivion so I'm definitely not a new or inexperienced player. Through multiple characters I have never once finished that potions quest. You say "imagine doing this quest and spending so much time and effort into it only to receive potions at the end… not a very good reward!" but since even as a new player you already know what the reward will be for turning in all the root will be why the heck would you ever bother actually completing it? I just didn't consider anyone would be that nuts!?!?! Just as you I stand behind Allies for Bruma not being much more difficult regardless of quest completion. Possibly a skill level or character build difference coloring our differing opinions. Also where are you getting this data about "Most players" not liking these quests? Your own comment section has several people disagreeing with your opinion on some of them. Did you take a poll. Are you quoting some research? Or is this just one of those "everybody knows" type of things that has no provable basis? Now for the weapons. BETTER WEAPONS? These are the most powerful Bow and Powerful Mace IN THE GAME! (With the exception of the mace you can glitch into the game with the DLC uninstall trick but that mace isn't technically in the game and was left in a DEV area.) Are you familiar with them? With the Hatreds Soul and the right build, enchanted gear and use of alchemy you can run around one shot killing a major portion of the enemies even with the infamous difficulty curve at higher levels. Finally HORDES. Really? Any time someone has to resort to text book definitions to make a point they are on the back foot. I may be wrong but I believe that when most people picture Hordes they are picturing something like Helms Deep in the Lord of the Rings. Not that puny battle. That battle has less NPC's then the Civil war in Skyrim and people were so disappointed with that one that several mods were made to add dozens of additional NPC's to actually make it feel like a true battle.

      Even the most powerful mace in the game is no good if I don't want a mace, and I prefer something else...
      You seem offended by the video.
      I too have hundreds of hours logged on ES 4. I don't see what there is to get so animated about.

    nirnroots. you are correct, it's absolutely pointless even with a major in alchemy. I once went for it in a big way and got to level 3 but it wasn't worth it. Also, I have just discovered online that there is a map with ALL nirnroots on it so if anyone wants to do this then I'd suggest finding it and making a copy.
