The problem with green energy

  • Solar and wind energy offer a greener future, but effective energy storage is crucial. We may have an innovative solution involving renewables, hydrogen production, carbon capture, and methane production: the process of converting green energy into hydrogen through electrolysis, enabling long-term storage.
Though still in the research stage, the potential for a sustainable and energy-balanced world is promising.

Very good execution on how to explain your main message on your research. The idea on reutilizing the CO2 to produce methane makes me feel uncomfortable, as methane will be transformed back to energy by releasing back the CO2 it initially captured. Why not store the surplus of energy by using gravity energy storage orARES as Switzerland already has so many mountains? Or flow batteries, even though it will take a lot of space, but Iron should be abundant enough? This would allow to keep the whole cycle cleaner - based on my limited knowledge.

Interesting article. The loss in useful energy through the process of electrolysis, storage ( complex & requiring energy to be kept very cold in storage) , then re-gasification and use in gas fired turbines to produce electricity is a negative energy game. That is not highlighted. The core problem with renewables is fundamentally that they are UNRELIABLE. Trying to address this aspect is of course intellectually interesting and will garner research funding, but the expenses in solving these unreliability issues would best spent more economically, like small scale nuclear. Not EU countries importing electricity from France are colour blind to it’s nuclear sources.

switzerland has 8TWh of electricity storage through dams in the alps... So why bother with hydrogen/methane at all?

Because other countries will need other solutions

@mathiasgebhart Because it's only enough for 1-2 months. In winter Switzerland is importing much of it's electricity and in summer Switzerland is exporting a lot...

I agree that other countries will need other solutions, but we need to set a scope as well and solve problems from scope to scope. Otherwise countries will apply solutions, that might not be the optimal one for them. Especially if you have a lot of rivers but do not use dams, yet.

Use greatest phisical equation E=mc2 and there should no be any problem, Bonkers.
