In today’s video, we’re going to take a look one of the most commonly used shots in film and television: The over-the-shoulder shot.
The over-the-shoulder shot (OTS) seems simple enough, seeing as the definition is in the name, but it is often used without the proper cinematic motivation.
It is true that you gain a sense of orientation by having a character’s shoulder in the frame, but there is also a significant psychological effect, and therefore significant emotions generated when you use an over-the-shoulder shot in film or television.
It might seem a bit trivial, but all of these little decisions add up to an effective, or ineffective storytelling experience. Oh, and you don’t have to exclusively use over-the-shoulder shots for dialogue scenes either.
Our video shows you:
Examples of over-the-shoulder shots.
Why you use an OTS shot in your story.
AND
How to go about surrounding your OTS shots.
When you finish this video, you will have a complete understanding of when, where, how, and why you use an OTS shot, and you’ll be able to use them to their maximum effect.
The end result: You will be able to signal to your viewer how they should feel about a relationship within your story.

The narrator of these vids is superb
Love his voice!
@@RespecttheScreenplay We think so too!
He reminds me of the narrator from the video game, The Stanley Parable.
Ugh I hated it
Graeme Strachan yes thats who I was thinking of.
I don’t think I’ve ever heard it explained like this! Beautiful breakdown! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 We aspiring film makers & creatives appreciate you more than you know!
Glad you enjoyed it! What should we cover in a future video?
how to create a shot list@@StudioBinder
I love your channel. I'm a student to filming and it always blows my mind the level of detail that goes into movies that most normal people probably miss. Yet, they did not miss it at all, they were engaged with it. Without these details, the movie wont have that cinematic impact that we are accustomed to enjoy.
Thank you, Chris! Filmmaking is such a beautiful process and learning how to nail all of the details is the icing on the cake!
Again, very cool video and great analysis! Love the "Black Hole Sun" cover at the end!
It's the soundtrack of Westworld. Great series.
Just beautiful!
I'm shooting for my short film starting today. It would be a week long 6-12 hour shift per day. This one's a life saver. Thanks a lot Studiobinder.
I’m not a film maker and probably never will be but by watching Studio Binder I will see movies I watch in a different way. The education I’m getting is fantastic!! Thank you so much!
I feel the internet is Short of OTS explanation videos, which is one of the majority of shots used in a film. This video was great, make more videos about OTS, like OTS with 2 or more people, within a group, with relation to objects, etc. That would be really helpful. Cheers!
Very well analyzed! Good example!
Glad you enjoyed it! What was the biggest takeaway for you?
@@StudioBinder I never looked at a OTS - Shot so closely. I love these shot - analysis, because therefore I can learn how to play with the viewers subconscious. Your videos are also very well structured and overseeable!
Am I allowed to ask, what sources of research you use for these types of videos?
@@PhilippChromy Our team does a lot of research and analysis on the filmmakers. Another great OTS shot is from The Social Network (when Zuckerberg breaks up with his girlfriend). It's a masterclass in filmmaking.
@@StudioBinder Thanks for the info! 👍🏼
One of the best channel in filmmaking stuff and tutos.thnks a lot bro for your work dor teaching us new things!
Wonderful explanation as called “8” plan. So simple and so deep meaning of this trick. I’m very grateful to you giving me a good lessons of moviemaking. Of course it is an ABC, but for it some institutes wasting half part of semester. Here within 6,5 minutes I’ve gotten all I wanted about this subject! Bravo!
The opening shot of Godfather. The camera dolly back as Corleone gets less and less interested in Bonasera's story, and stops as Bonasera has completely lost Corleone's respect.
Bonaserasara

Pure goldmine of inspirations. Thanks.
The Westworld scene blew my mind when I watched the episode back then. What a masterpiece. And man... A.H. is the most suitable actor for this role.
Right!?!?! I was glued to the screen!
The narrator is so good, I enjoyed every bit of it. Very simple yet informative video. Thank you for sharing 😊

This was sooooo insightful!
Excellent explanation of the OTS
At last someone goes beyond the rule of third and three point lighting in filmmaking. Thank you.
Blackhole Sun on piano. Lovely.
Super cool!!
this channel is the first time i’ve actually clicked the bell icon on a video
very very helpful, thanks buddy....keep it up
Really cool!!
awesome case study...plz do more of case study examples....
Question: must two cameras be used for a smooth OTS, and how are they angled so that they are not visible in each others frames? I appreciate it. Great Video, StudioBinder!
Thank you
Great video
I feel like a lot of this is getting the coverage, and the the editor working his magic too!
Mind blown. I know quite a lot about filmmaking but this i did not. Absolutely fascinating
This was such a good analysis! During the scene when Ford is delivering a line, it cuts to Theresa and Ford is still speaking and then back to Ford I want to know how that’s filmed, did they do a dolly of Ford all the way as he says the line or do they keep the mic over Ford and switch the camera to a shot of Theresa? It would be really cool if you guys did an analysis of costumes and how the colors of the costumes impact the characters!
Who are the two people who dislike such a wonderful video?
Very good explain
Thabkq....so much for your explaining
Definitely, what was the biggest takeaway for you?
Thank you sir so use full...
This is really nice.
That conversation was great filmmaking for many other reasons. It was masterful acting by Anthony Hopkins.
Great info.
Very good!
Thank you
Great vid as always
Glad you enjoyed it, what was the biggest takeaway for you?
StudioBinder honestly... its such a good video i cant decide :D but i really like the part when you explain how OTS can connect characters. It’s so obvious but never realized how much it affects the conversation
Thank you...
Thank you! This is the first "why" video I've gotten as opposed to the cliche, do whatever you want cuz it's film
Glad to hear we offered a fresh perspective!
Beautiful
I have learnt something new.
Is it possible for you to give us some more examples such as this.
The conversation between Joker and Batman in the interrogation room from The Dark Knight Rises is my favourite OTS scene #StudioBinder
Really useful tips 💯
Glad you enjoyed it! What was the biggest takeaway for you?
StudioBinder that dolly zoom in really conveys that feel to me... Gonna use that in my next project ❤️😊
Fine! I'd like to watch tutorials about eyeline and how to film them
This voice is cool for my movie promotion.
Thank you very good visutorial
Veiry nice !
What was the lens they used for this scene?
If I may so ask when making an OTS shot is it mandatory to havepre than one camera
What lens they used to shoot this over the shoulder shots?
whar kind of music did you use? i want to learn!
Best example of ots uses in the film of inglorious blasters by Tarantino
i hope u have a subtitle bro, so i can understand it well😊
👏👏👏👏 super
Pero que elegancia la de francia wow too good to be free heehe
Good 👍
Glad you enjoyed today's video!
What if I have a sideways view with the two characters completely in frame? Would that still work?
nice
The narrator 👍🏻🙏 and studio binder my film school
What's the name of the soundtrack playing in the first 44 seconds of this video?
I know the song from the piano melody at the end but cant get my mind back on the Band and the title. Please Help! +Marvelous analyses of ots shots. Jonathan Nolan is the writer here not the Director I guess. Did he master the screenplay too?
Soundgarden: Black Hole Sun
@@jakfearon2945 It's the jam!
What happens when reflections are involved , for instance two people in window. Thanks 🙌
My favourite has to be the killing scene of the cop in Godfather.
Yep, and also think about how the switch from speaking Italian to English plays into the filmmaking decisions as well.
I like your explanation and Beautiful breakdown, but can you add english subtittle for your next video?
Which this movie plz tell me
I have just started my career as a screenplay writer and film director. How to succeed from scratch?
Well explained lucidly. But I have got a doubt, this shot also see like 180 degrees could you explain me the difference.
I think it was MS not MCU from the example scene:)
However, your videos are superb!
Amazing Video.. Thank you So much #krutikaanimationstudio
Which episode is this?
film student here in North Carolina. Thanks. #FULLSAIL
My favorite ots shot would be from Heat. The famous restaurant scene
