I agree with many opinions here, the older version is much nicer looking. The new one is too boxy looking.....Also I prefer non power steering for a more sport feel while driving.....Good video here, but I'll keep my 451 early version.......
I too like the inside of the old one better, the dash layout, and the back storage etc. I do like the new one's exterior more. It looks like a frog, or as someone else said, a puffer fish :)
I have a 2008 Smart and I definitely prefer the look of the old Smart cars. However, I'm pretty jelly of all the new features and improvements made to the newer models. That extra 20 hp would make a huge difference in such a tiny car. Thanks for the great comparison video!
Gregg, been looking at the 453 for quite some time now. I've owned 3 mini's including one that was a classic from the Netherlands. Loved that car, should of never sold it. I just love small cars period. I got so tired of the whole, "It's so cute" comments, or "It's a death trap" when actually we both know they're extremely safe for there size. Bottom line, they're cool as hell, fun to drive, good gas mileage, AC, cruise, heated seats, stereo, etc. I'll buy a White 453 and probably wrap it in a cool solid color, then get some nice looking light weight wheels to take it to the next level. That's a great video and I appreciate you covering all of the pro's and con's of each model. I saw a 453- 5 speed manual on Auto Trader the other day. The stock 5 speed gear shifter looked a lot nicer as did the boot. I was curious what you knew about the 5 speed manuals and if it's a much more desired transmission than the automatic...? The automatic sounds like it shifts really nice now, I'd driven an early 451 when they first came out and was disappointed in how rough it shifted. I Personally like the new body versus the old, not to mention the added HP, Power Steering, etc. So here's the big question Gregg, I've heard to many different stories on maintenance and parts availability... What's the real truth, can you still get service and parts for the 453...??? I've heard know one will work on them, some Mercedes dealerships not at others. I don't really care to buy one if I can't get parts or service. Can you please clear that up for everyone...? Also, if there are engine upgrades, chips or even cold air intakes for better performance available...? Thanks again, we all appreciate it. I'll watch for your reply.... :) 4/26/24
About that luggage compartment cover, if you remove it and slide the seats forward slightly, you'll see two slots near the bottom front of the luggage compartment, where the floor drops to go under the seats, that look exactly the same as the ones from which you've removed the cover. Fold the vertical part of the luggage compartment cover double and stow the bar in these two slots. It takes up virtually no space at all and you'll gain a lot of space in your luggage compartment! One of the very few features that were carried over from the old to the new models unchanged.
My OLD Smartie was just coming up to his 20th birthday when I decided to retire him. He gave me great service and lots of memories for about 8 years. I spent a lot keeping him running but like us all, when we pass the 50k, the small things that keep going begin to add up! I dropped by the garage where I bought my original Smart Pure 450 and couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this 2016 Smart Proxy on the forecourt! It was love at first sight! Most noticable thing for me was the Turbo that comes in useful when overtaking on motorways. DOwn side for me is the media console. There's no SatNav installed and I'm struggling to find an outlet that can fit the right one for me.
I live in an Asian city, so I am looking at buying a Smart car. I am trying to decide if the newer ones are worth the extra money, or if I should save money and buy an older one. Honestly, I am trying to convince myself that the newer ones are worth the money, for various reasons. From what I am seeing, though, based on this video (as well as others) along with the specs on paper, is that the older versions are basically better in nearly every way that matters to someone who would be in the market for a Smart car (ultra compact city car). The older ones are physically smaller (the first generation being the narrowest and the shortest in length), which means they can fit more places. They older ones are more fuel efficient (hard to beat a 600cc turbo charged engine on the tiniest and lightest Smart car you can buy). The older ones also have more storage (as pointed out in this video, more storage in the cabin area, around the wheel, on the dash, in the tailgate, etc). The older ones are, obviously, drastically cheaper (always a benefit). The older ones also keep you in a lower vehicle tax bracket (a big deal in the international market). I mean, I REALLY want to like the new ones better, but... bigger? Less fuel efficient? Less storage? Higher tax bracket? More expensive? I don't think all of that is worth trading for a "more powerful/faster" Smart car.
I have a 2014 model, and I have tons of fun driving it. I knew this was not going to be a luxury or comfort car when I bought it, so I'm pretty happy about its capabilities. I haven't driven the newer model, but I can say that the automated manual transmission on the 2014 model is something you need to get used to. It's slow in shifting, and it affects the acceleration especially when you need to join the highway. Also, side winds are something you need to take into consideration if you're cruising in high speed over 65 mph, especially on windy days. I say, test drive both, and get the one (if you haven't already) you really feel comfortable with :) I think fuel economy is the same on both models, about 36 mpg city-highway combined. If you live in a city with lots of potholes, you may also want to consider the newer model as the guy in the video says it's much more comfortable. I only know how bumpy it gets in my 2014 model, but I still love it. Also, since it's more narrow, you have more space to avoid potholes without getting outside your lane 🙂 hope this helps you or some others!
You can always upgrade the power of the old one! Plus it’s narrower, but still comfortable as you stated! That’s great for parking in a big city as you stated plus manuvering . The front of tote old one actually looks more aggressive to me too! 😁
hey, great video. Very thorough! My TX Smart car is orange (I noticed your TX window sticker). Good point about driving long distance. I drove mine 700 miles (one way) and we were taking turns driving and the car did great at highway driving, it felt really confident! Mine does not have a moon roof. I agree the U-turn radius is amazing - and thanks for demonstrating U-turn on the old model.
Thank you for reviewing and sharing! Excellent job explaining pros and cons. It sounds like the perfect car would be a beautiful mix of both :) Both cars are beautiful but I love the body of the older version.
This was a very informative video and I really appreciate the direct comparisons between the two generations. I am very familiar with the 451 and mainly wanted to see comparisons with the 453. The differences truly are staggering for anyone that is familiar with driving the 451
I have the older style as above which is a 451 model. Mine has lowered suspension, wide wheels, paddle shifts, sports exhaust and uprated to 132hp. Black Leather dash and alcantara dials, glove compartment and door panels. I have had a Lotus Elan, BMW 530 Sport, BMW 535, 2 Porsche 911’s and Ferrari 355 over the years. The Ferrari was the worst of the lot completely unreliable and unstable at 150mph. The others were all great cars but the Smart car I love the best, cheap to buy, fun to drive and dirt cheap to run and can park anywhere 👍
the US/Canada version u guys got is boring the eu version gets the turbo from the factory just a map will get it to 130hp and it has a another gear lever which makes it look more appealing
2024 seen. I own since new 2012 smart car. I have never had a issue with my car. Live in Key West Florida. I have air conditioning. I would not trade or sell. I believe miles around 40K since new. Thank you
the only benefit in the new ones (performance wise) is the auto transmission that's it the 1.0L mitsubishi engine shits on the renault engine plus american versions of the 451 only got the 71 bhp engine which is why people think it's slow
Hi Jack, Thank you so much for the best review and comparison between the old and new Smart Car on the WWW. We get our new Smart Car next week. I think it's such a shame more people aren't buying the new FourTwo as Mercedes have improved so much from the older model. I do agree that it could have been more space age. Thanks again, Gary from the UK
I have had one of these since 2009 from new and love it. The thing that I hate about it, is the sun visor which is only up and down, so if the sun is from the side you have to use your hand. Looks like the new one has not solved the problem. The old car has the power for ramps but the clutch was on/off so you cannot slowly creep up a slope or come close to another car. I understand the new one has a much better clutch
I kinda dig the 453. Unfortunately smart cars are not sold in my country (Brazil) since 2015, so we never actually had the 453 around here. The new smart is based on the Twingo from french manufacturer Renault , and shares a lot of parts with it. The suspension is upgraded when compared to the 451 so it runs waaaaaaaaaaay smoother in harsh roads.
Love my 2013 Passion. 120k miles & not a single issue. I’m very rough on my cars. And I’m BAD at maintenance. REALLY BAD. 🙈 I don’t know how, but I’ve always had to replace the driver side window motors in all my previous cars & always have air conditioning issues. Not my smart! This thing is a tank.
With the 2seater you'll have to do your shopping more often, but it's a fun car and easy to park, you won't mind. I own a 4seater, as a second car it's great, the back seat serves as storage, the passenger seat folds completely level, which allows for carrying big boxes. It truly deserves the badge of honour 'compact'...
Well Done !! I been wonderin....I have a 2014 passion ....bought it used so I did not have the option of sun roof..sigh I first drove a smart fortwo as a local rental..Need I say I fell in Love immediately ..a couple yrs later was financially blessed and bought a used passion..the color scheme is what drew me to this car...black over red..i get compliments daily..BIG SMILE..my standard response is that is why i bought it..to the comment..such a cute car...I love the fact that the passenger seat folds down for longer cargo..does the new one do that?..So the point of the comment is Thx furr posting..a new fan Rhonda
The new one is more of an all rounder than the old (2012 old ?) Smart. To me, it seems to have headed steadily towards being just another, fairly anonymous, small car. Whereas the earlier Smarts were city cars. With their quirks.
As a Prius Prime (183 inches long) owner, I see only two reasons to buy a Smart, and my preference among them would be a 451. First is to carry it sideways on an HDT bed with or without an RV trailer in tow, albeit while making the truck 4+ inches over legal width. I've seen them on the road, and they are awesome. Second is that it's a great little car to flat tow, albeit after a lot of hassle to install the equipment to do that nicely, and a quirky procedure to go through every time setting it up each time you tow it. If I ever go the HDT RVing route, it will probably be as a straight truck setup somewhat like a Class A RV, maybe with some of the space as deck/Smart or as enclosed toy hauling. I'm just not keen on pulling a 5th wheel trailer, too many disadvantages over a Class A, Class C, van, SUV, or even car. I really like the sleeping space to be contiguous with the driver's seat, and most of the weight being on driving wheels. A 5th wheel's only advantage, a huge amount of space, just isn't my thing.
I love our 2008 Smart Fortwo because it's tiny. If I had my way I'm make it smaller by 1 fourth size. If I could have one in the USA, I'd get a Smart Crossblade which is smaller, doesn't have a top at all and has only half a windshield. I don't like new smooth riding very quiet cars at all. I enjoy the feel of the road and the ability to constantly listen to my engine sound. I guess this means if I ever buy another one, I won't be getting a 453 model. Thanks for the comparison.
The 4.5 inches extra width means it's harder to creep between a car at a stop light and the curb to make a surreptitious stealth right turn. It wasn't a good idea. And, I just shipped a new 2017 (last one) from New Jersey to Los Angeles, because 2018 is electric only...57 miles range (81 with regenerative braking) means impractical for a sprawl-city...can't even make Palm Springs, Santa Barbara or San Diego. Silly.
I also have the 2014 model, but am thinking of getting a used 2016 too as the second car. I wonder if the door panels and bumpers are still plastic and easily replaceable in the newer model as well. On a side note, as a person who drives in the city myself, I'm devastated that Smart cars won't be sold in the US market anymore. Only the inventory is still here, and the service 😔 It's nice to see people from all over the country who still appreciate this car though. Thank you for the in depth look to the comparison of these two models!
I drive a 451 Brabus from 2008. Rides like a Tank, has 102Hp and gives me joy everyday. Specially after installing a 10inch android System wir 360 degree camera view. The only thing I could miss is the tighter turn radius ob the 453. And of course the 451 Brabus look more BOSS.
Well, this is the video that originally made me want to upgrade from my 451 to a 453. I finally purchased a '16 Passion and holy smokes is it worth it.
Unfortunately the sunroof is not standard on "all" of them. It's a $300 option. I drove 250 miles away to look at a 2018, with the understanding it had the "panoramic roof," and it didn't. It was a hard top with this strange cloth-looking top. I ended up picking out a different one with the panoramic roof, because I really like the light it lets in.
Everybody likes the old one better but probably half of yall live at sea level 😐 it’s hard to get up some giant roads so really the new smart is going to be the one that I’d go with.
Thank you this was a very helpful video. I feel like the new one has less leg room than the old one, but I haven't heard anyone else mention it in reviews. Might just be me?
Here it is, 2021. No more new Smart cars in the US. I needed a new (to me) car this year & seriously thought about a Smart, but too many people recommended that I not get one.
Love the new Smart. Wish I had one, I just bought a 2013 Smart Fortwo knowing there were problems mechanically, and I’m still working on shifter not working. But I’m hopeful….there are only 23000 miles on thiscar
I've been thinking about a Smart for some time now. I'm about 6'4" but have more legs than torso. I see in the video that Gregg's legs appear to not fit under the steering wheel of the 453, which would mean driving with the steering wheel in between the legs. Does this become uncomfortable? I also see that Gregg's legs do appear to fit under the steering wheel of the 451?
Best smart car video I’ve seen. I’ve been so stuck between the 2 models but looks like more is gained than lost. I really liked the bigger storage in the back and the small compartments by the steering wheel. But tighter turn, wind stability, and better overall drive is pushing me to the newer one..decisions 🤔
Decisions, decisions. Yes, there are some real differences between the two. I have driven and used both, and in my opinion, get the newer model. The cross-wind handling is reason alone to go with the 453 model. Thanks for watching!
Good comparison, but I think it's a bit biased for the fact that Smart 451 1.0L Turbo 84hp isn't or wasn't available in USA. If you tried one of these (that by the way can easily be upgraded with a remap to 100+ hp, much more torque and faster gear change), your opinion would be different. Also, Tempomat is easily installed, with many others accessories. Power steering is an option too. Turning radius is quite better in 453, that's unquestionable. It looks and sounds more like a car, but weights much more too, so the kart-like behavior seems to vanish. Right now for the same money amount I would definitely go for a second hand Brabus 451 Full Equip 2014 with low mileage than a new 453 90hp passion.
The thing about the power steering is - It's Not needed at all. My 2008 Smart Fortwo turns very easily, so much so, you would Think it Had power steering compared to older cars. You know how in most cars if your power steering goes out you would have to use a lot of strength to turn the steering wheel.. well you don't have that on the 2008 Fortwo at all. It feels very natural.
+1. .. Nicely done. .. big improvements with the SMART Cars. .. Moving forward it has been said the USA SMART model Cars will be exclusively EV; Starting with MY20. .. No more dino propulsion varooom! .. Hey, where's an EV charge post?
excellent comparison and presentation. Always thought they were ugly and primitive, wondered who would buy one. Came to Europe, wanted small car like my USA Fiat500 but the EU version engine has zero power. looked at a Smart Brabus and hadn't test driven 5 miles when it already had me sold. Great handling in city and Autobahn. And easy park in the tiniest spaces. So never say never. Too bad now only made in electric version.
Guys what about mounting something on the front to winch up, I saw a 2016 at the dealer set-up to be towed behind a class A, maybe that's a possibility especially with your new bed and ramps on both side. Also I haven't really driven ours (2016 Prime) much until the last couple of days and I noticed a delay or small hesitation when starting from a dead stop is that normal or something I should get checked?
Is it possible to see the new car loading and unloading? Also, how long is the car? Does it meet the 102 inch width limit or is it slightly over when loaded? It wouldn't bother me to be over a little, I'm just curious. Thank you.
Hello Ron. Great questions - yes we are beyond 106". We tend to put the overage to the passenger side where oncoming and following vehicles don't see the bump-out. Note that is a bit of curvature of the bumper that we are dealing with. If you would like to see the car loading, here is a video that shows exactly that! ruclips.net/video/WWLRWPDHVx0/видео.html
Hi John. We can load other vehicles length-wise on the deck/bed of the truck as you have suggested. Yes, we can do that! (just not width wise). The Smartie is the only car that can go width wise.
Give the Yankee consumer more crap that they don't need for a price they cant afford. You can buy a high-quality used SMART in Europe for 2500 USD and most likely x3 in the USA. They turned a nice stylish Swatch Mercedes ART into a Japanese beetle!
Hello Aviator. You are correct. We tend to put the overage to the passenger side where oncoming and following vehicles don't see the bumper. Note that is a bit of curvature of the bumper that we are dealing with.
Smart was a success in the USA until the 2016 redesign. New model was built with cheaper materials, poor paint and a very bad Renault engine. I owned 3 of the previous generation smarts, and one of the newer. I loved the first 3. They were rock solid. The newer model was problematic. Many engine problems, horrible brakes and super noisy. If anyone is considering a used Smart today, they should stay with a 2008-2015 only. The 2016 and on were bad cars, which is why the brand ended up failing in the USA.
Hi Darren, They are surprisingly large. I have clients that have Smart Cars and are over 6 feet and fit really well. There is plenty of head and foot space to be comfortable. Thanks for the question, Gregg
I love my 05 CDI Turbo. Plain Jane simple. That new one is IMO ugly. Gosh my Lada Niva had more character. Remember one thing here amigo..this car is expensive to repair, and the new one with all the bells & whistles your looking for more trouble. Your comparison with the box, it looks to me that the driver seat was laid back more in the new one vs the old one. I also own the trailer hitch on mine.
Oh man, when he said 'Old smart car' I was thinking 2004-2006, not 2014 lol. That's considered new to me.
The old one is beutiful and iconic
Agree!
but its sooo baaaad
Agreed 👍

they had to update it eventually
i think the old one is more good looking
I agree as well - the 453 doesn't scream Smart to me like the previous models did.
jan haugen I think they have designed it that way so that both the 2 seater and 4 seater can look the same. It's just not quirky like the older model.
jan haugen are you blind?
I too like the inside of the old one better, the dash layout, and the back storage etc. I do like the new one's exterior more. It looks like a frog, or as someone else said, a puffer fish :)
I agree but the newer technology can not be denied.

The new one has lost the smart car look
Trying to achieve regular car look.. what’s the point?

Hello Gary. We are glad you found the comparison of some value. Thanks for watching!
Thinking about getting the old smart car simply to park in my neighborhood since everyone double parks...
That was one of the best comparisons I have seen. Thanks ! ! !

The new smart is based on the Twingo from french manufacturer Renault , and shares a lot of parts with it. The suspension is upgraded when compared to the 451 so it runs waaaaaaaaaaay smoother in harsh roads.
Guy should have just titled this: How much I love my 2016, body style; and how the older model can go kick rocks. Just sell the 2014, dude.
Wait till you guys try the 451 Smart Brabus!
the american version doesn't get the 98/102 bhp just like the normal version 71bhp no turbo in the 451 for the US
A very good video showing both models and the pros and cons between them.
Hello Roy, I am glad you found the video helpful.
Gregg
I disagree with some people here, the old model looks very dated now.The new model looks more premium and in my opinion a lot sexier.
I got a 2008 passion 118k miles on it no issues with it other than AC doesn't always work...I'm pretty rough on it/deliver food with it
With the 2seater you'll have to do your shopping more often, but it's a fun car and easy to park, you won't mind.
I own a 4seater, as a second car it's great, the back seat serves as storage, the passenger seat folds completely level, which allows for carrying big boxes.
It truly deserves the badge of honour 'compact'...
Well Done !! I been wonderin....I have a 2014 passion ....bought it used so I did not have the option of sun roof..sigh
I first drove a smart fortwo as a local rental..Need I say I fell in Love immediately ..a couple yrs later was financially blessed and bought a used passion..the color scheme is what drew me to this car...black over red..i get compliments daily..BIG SMILE..my standard response is that is why i bought it..to the comment..such a cute car...I love the fact that the passenger seat folds down for longer cargo..does the new one do that?..So the point of the comment is Thx furr posting..a new fan Rhonda
Very good comparison. My 2012 Smart Fortwo has electronic stability program.
Hi guys! Thanks for making this! I bought a 2015 smartfortwo passion a year or two ago and now I want the new one! God Bless!
The new one is more of an all rounder than the old (2012 old ?) Smart. To me, it seems to have headed steadily towards being just another, fairly anonymous, small car. Whereas the earlier Smarts were city cars. With their quirks.
I have a 2014 I love it and mine is a real car
As you have wisely explained, everyone has their own personal preferences. Every solution has their advantages and disadvantages. Great points!

The new one looks aweful from the front.
Major Spam I like it
The 4.5 inches extra width means it's harder to creep between a car at a stop light and the curb to make a surreptitious stealth right turn.
What do you think of the 2015 model
Outstanding review!! I am looking at one of these (WAY older model) and appriceate the comparision.....Thank You!!!!!
Hello Hello! Glad the video was helpful in your purchase plans, and I'm glad I didn't steer you wrong!
I love my 2014 Smart ED cabriolet. It's small and quick.wouldn't trade it for a bigger car.
I prefer the old Smart, much more beautifull.
Everybody likes the old one better but probably half of yall live at sea level 😐 it’s hard to get up some giant roads so really the new smart is going to be the one that I’d go with.
Nice comparison video. Safe travels and thanks for sharing.
The old one had ESP as well.
A comparison with the Scion Iq would be welcome.
I've just got a 2017 prime!
Excellent review. I live in England, so am unlikely to drive 500 miles. But I really like my 451 mhd.
I think the old one does have automatic climate control. The numbers on the left, hand side of the AC unit represent degrees in Celsius.
Awesome video, you convinced me to buy 453 instead of the older 451!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and ideas. I appreciate you taking the time to comment.
I like the new one with a 5 speed manual. A 140hp model would be stupid and fun in this rwd mini car.
Thanks Jack. Very nice review.
+1. .. Nicely done. .. big improvements with the SMART Cars. .. Moving forward it has been said the USA SMART model Cars will be exclusively EV; Starting with MY20. .. No more dino propulsion varooom! .. Hey, where's an EV charge post?
Good video, is the new 453 flat towable?
Very well put together...thanks
Glad you enjoyed it.
Gregg
excellent comparison and presentation.
Can you put the alloys of 453 on the 451?
Fine presentation!
Thanks for this great video 👍
If you would like to see the car loading, here is a video that shows exactly that! ruclips.net/video/WWLRWPDHVx0/видео.html
the old one is much better
How so? The guy already told us what is improved in the new model. There is no real advantage to the old model apart from the luggage space
New one looks like a micra etc. It also has a clutch! I will keep my 2014 thanks, even with slow transmission.
Are there any other car options for your taller customers? Is a Kia Soul able to be hauled?
Hi John. We can load other vehicles length-wise on the deck/bed of the truck as you have suggested. Yes, we can do that! (just not width wise). The Smartie is the only car that can go width wise.
Thank you for your review
My pleasure!
Gregg
Give the Yankee consumer more crap that they don't need for a price they cant afford. You can buy a high-quality used SMART in Europe for 2500 USD and most likely x3 in the USA. They turned a nice stylish Swatch Mercedes ART into a Japanese beetle!
no disrespect to the man making the video, my comments are about SMART USA and their lousy way of killing the brand!
I love my 2006 Smart Roadster Brabus!
They are more than 102" long (106). Doesn't that make them over wide if loaded sideways on the truck?
Hello Aviator. You are correct. We tend to put the overage to the passenger side where oncoming and following vehicles don't see the bumper. Note that is a bit of curvature of the bumper that we are dealing with.

Great video
old one is nicer looking. why are they stopping making gas engines? electrics are getting zip 4 resale. no more gas engines means death of smart
the 453 is definitely less “manly”. the 451 is much much better and aggressive looking.
Love my 2015 Pure. Runs like a sewing machine on the freeway at 70 plus mph. And the 2015 is much better looking.
Excellent review thankyou I love the new smart gunna get me one
A 8mm square socket is needed to remove the motor oil drain plug on my 2017 453. Not too crazy about that.
I like the 2014. It defeats the purpose if the car is wider. Way easier to park the old one
Will someone that’s over 6ft tall fit behind the steering wheel easily?
Hi Darren,
They are surprisingly large. I have clients that have Smart Cars and are over 6 feet and fit really well. There is plenty of head and foot space to be comfortable.
Thanks for the question, Gregg
I've never had to grab both latches on my tailgate on my 451?
One side opens it.
One side opens it on my 2011 451 as well.
I enjoy watching Greg's videos, I do not know why but Jack just grinds on me. I am just irritated by the end of the video.
the old smart cars felt more like ride on lawmowers than cars
Idk guys. Overall i prefer my 451 2012. Just look more cool with curves not new one like a box car
What's the head room like for someone that's 6'6" in the 453?
You saw Jack in the car - and he is 6' 4" I believe.
Thank's.. I'll keep that in mind for a 453 as an option...
6' 6" is going to push the limits. I'm 6' 2", Gregg is just making me bigger. Try it and see if it works.
Thanks for the info, I may just go with using my trikes instead..
I also own the trailer hitch on mine.
thank you, nice job
I like my 2014 smart for two, and my pack of beer
I'm with you there Joe! Priorities Priorities! Stay safe (and hydrated)!
