I've been to Dead shows with tens of thousands of people there, all going nuts, but when they play Stella Blue, it brings absolute silence over the audience. Everyone is focused and time just stands still. It's a rare gift when a group of musician can achieve this sort of response with their music.
No one has ever beaten the Dead for lyrics , musicality or story telling . They were truly a one off . The whole ethos of the band and the Deadheads will never be repeated.
Jerry could always sing some sadness into a joyful song, and beauty into melancholia. Here, what we missed in life is represented as such a beautifully magnificent tapestry. Such a way to smile through heartbreaking reflection.
Just realized I hadn't left a comment. I love the imagery of loss and redemption. Jerry's voice changed over the years, smoking 5 packs a day by rumor, but always fit so well with song like this and wharf rat to name two. In the end there's still that song. RIP until we meet again 😪
Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart has often said that the Grateful Dead weren't in the music business, but they were really in the transportation business. And that they used the music to move people like a taxi driver uses a taxi cab. You are experiencing just that! Close your eyes and enjoy the ride.
As a Taxi driver for many years, I can attest. And the many fares I blessed with this music can attest, too. I drove people to their destinations while taking them on magical trips of music.
I met the band in 1971 in Providence Rhode Island. I asked Jerry if I could sit behind the amps and he said yes. I got to the back of the amps I found Bear dropping liquid acid on the back of people’s hands and they licked it off. I stuck my hand out and he put four big drops on it and I licked it off. I sat behind Pigpen for the whole show but at the end of the first set I wandered over to check their equipment out. I was looking at everything and Jerry walked over and passed me a big fat joint and we passed it back and forth and it was about halfway down and people were coming over when they saw what we were doing. I thanked Jerry and I saw Bear and asked him if I could get some of his products and he hooked me up with his local dealer. Jerry lets me on the bus and Bear dosed me and I passed the acid test, thanks guys I also met my wife at a show. Losing Phil makes me feel like I did when Jerry died’ Because I know that all of the people who loved them like I did are out in the world still spreading the love vibe still. Sarah your wonderful I love your take on the Dead thank you ❤️
I did not think I would feel this way. But, you are right: losing Phil is just like losing Jerry. But, they made it possible for the world to always enjoy their music.
"All the years combine..." - definitely one of their very best! This rendition is from 'The Grateful Dead Movie' released in 1977 but this show was from 1974.
First saw the live in 1970 or 71. The memories are are a bit hazy for those days.😮 They were due to start at 9 pm, didn't start till midnight. Were still playing at 6 am. What time they finished, not a clue. We'd all crashed by then! Still a fan at 77. Ah, the memories 🤣🤣👏👏
I’ve been listening to the Dead for almost 50 yrs and I go through phases. When I was young, I loved the first set snappy stuff. I’ve got through the ballad stage, the jam phase, a Pig Pen stage, early 70’s, early 90’s late 70’s, early 80’s. Whatever! Play Dead. It is the background music to my life.
Thank you Sarah, Here are the lyrics... All the years combine They melt into a dream A broken angel sings From a guitar In the end there's just a song Comes crying like the night (wind) Through all the broken dreams And vanished years Stella Blue When all the cards are down There's nothing left to see There's just the pavement left And broken dreams In the end there's still that song Comes crying like the wind Down every lonely street That's ever been Stella Blue I've stayed in every blue-light cheap hotel Can't win for trying Dust off those rusty strings just One more time Gonna make em shine It all rolls into one And nothing comes for free There's nothing you can hold For very long And when you hear that song Come crying like the wind It seems like all this life Was just a dream Stella Blue
They had the famous Wall of Sound in this performance. The Wall of Sound was the greatest sound system ever built. It was 4 stories tall, weighed 75 tons and had enough power to fill the entire Grand Canyon with sound. I remember seeing them during this period (1974) and the clarity was beyond compare ☮
I’m new to your channel but a quick read of your comments tells me you have very knowledgeable Dead Heads in here. I started seeing their live shows in the 80s living in the Bay Area
Jerry Garcia could pour so much pain and feeling into his music, partially because of all of his childhood tragedies. When he was around 5 years old he and his brother when fishing with their father. Jerry watched his father slip and fall into the river and drown right in front of him.
After being in the 100+ degree parking lot all day and roasting. I'd go into the show and roast some more. This song was always like a breath of fresh air, then back to the craziness. But yes your take on this song was spot on again. You're good.
Their sound man, who designed their “wall of Sound” Stanley Owsley was a huge figure in the LSD market. He had a song about him, “Kid Charlemagne” from the Steeley Dan album “The Royal Scam.” There’s not a weak song in this album.
Try this 1 out its 4/1/90 The omni atlanta......pump that bass up dial it in and enjoy listen for tenderness begining intro after the words are done a wonderful slow build up outro melody in full triumphant glory creshendo for the win....🎉❤
The dead were pretty incredible. As great as the big psychedelic songs are, for me it's the ballads that really shine. Check out Brokedown Palace, Black Peter, and Wharf Rat.
here is a song they played in response to the massive earthquake in the Bay Area that occurred Oct 17, 1989 - they played "California Earthquake" 3 days later after ensuring all family and friends were safe - ruclips.net/video/S5iHaXCz0bA/видео.htmlsi=6tNhSnBbAm2QF96s&t=15 enjoy (very soulful and meaningful tune in the days after the quake
That's a stellar recording for sure, and Phil's fretless is exciting as hell, but for the best most perfect Scarlet> Fire, try Copps '92 on the So Many Roads set.
You are so beautiful with such positive energy. I'm from San Rafael Marin county San Francisco California. I love Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead. Will you marry me? 🍄🌁🌁🌁🍄

As someone who was there, I can attest how mesmerizing and beautiful this was. Thank you guys, including the lyricist Robert Hunter

I just love how this young lady ENJOY’s what the boys were giving….the best
This is my favorite Grateful Dead song.
It's definitely one of the greatest.
I saw 150+, and Stella is definitely among the very few that I could hear at every show and still be happy.
I've always loved this song. Thanks for sharing your reaction with us.
Just a great, great tune, and so many classic renditions
I think you're just about ready for the "Dark Star" challenge...
One of Jerry and Robert's best and most beautiful songs. Other songs in this mode:
China Doll
Comes a Time
Days Between
Standing on the Moon, He's Gone
@@madnezz1961 SOTM yes, He's Gone no.
Black Peter
High Time
Eyes of the World. You gotta do it...
So happy you loved it and get it. I love Jerry's voice too.

They melt into a dream
A broken angel sings
From a guitar
In the end there's just a song
Comes crying like the night (wind)
Through all the broken dreams
And vanished years
Stella Blue
When all the cards are down
There's nothing left to see
There's just the pavement left
And broken dreams
In the end there's still that song
Comes crying like the wind
Down every lonely street
That's ever been
Stella Blue
I've stayed in every blue-light cheap hotel
Can't win for trying
Dust off those rusty strings just
One more time
Gonna make em shine
It all rolls into one
And nothing comes for free
There's nothing you can hold
For very long
And when you hear that song
Come crying like the wind
It seems like all this life
Was just a dream
Stella Blue
These guys lived for the opportunity to share their music with live audiences. Some really great songs were played for many millions.
Jerry and the Boys (and Donna) working their magic. They take their time, no hurry but they get there.

A band beyond description. Like Jehovah's favorite choir.
Like a fine wine, Stella got even better later on, into the late 80s
My favorite late er version is from 3/24/90
I'm my mind it continued to evolve
They made such great music!
Such a nostalgic song. Fully encapsulates silence
This is from 10/17/74 at Winterland Arena ... A wonderful version thanks! 😍🎶🌞
Stella Blue is a great song. Glad that you enjoyed it. I love the resolutions in the song.

I’m only 16 seconds in and feel a good one about to begin 😂
“…and also leaving room for your own thoughts “ After 11:09 minutes, confirmed what I believed, that was great!
All the shows combine, they melt into... .
The Good Ol' Grateful Dead
I love your reaction to this song! So many more songs to enjoy. Maybe Broke Down Palace would be a good next song.

9/24/82 is my favorite version of Brokedown Palace

just the pavement left, and broken dreams
Another brilliant outtake from "The Grateful Dead Movie", so much music, so little time.

Girl your smile is beautiful
It seems like all this life was just a dream.
It just might be.
Other versions of this song include beautiful backing vocals. Love this one, but it’s worth seeking out other performances.
ay times the Grateful Dead took us on a trip to a beautiful diverse tye dye church in space
