    Quitting is easier than moderation. I tried moderation and kept failing at it, time after time. I'd not drink for months, then think "I can have one" and I'd have three, four, five, feeling like crap the next day, also because it made me feel weak. Then I quit and I haven't had a drink in 20 years now (I'm 50) and I don't miss it. Sometimes I'll think "one would be nice", but I know my brain won't be able to stick to that when I have one, because it messes up your resolve, because of what it does to the brain. So I don't have the first one and the next day I always think "wow, glad I didn't" and you know that if I'd have some, the next day I'd feel really bad with hangovers etc.
    People who say you can't have fun without it are people who can't have fun without it themselves. That's troublesome and sad, that's not the kind of people I want around me anymore. They'll drag you down with them, if you give them the chance. I had "friends" that would try to tempt me, say "you're so much more fun with a couple of drinks". I left those people behind me, because it's toxic behavior, even though it's socially accepted. If people care about you, they'll support you when you try to take steps to get healthier, not try to stop you from growing, because they can't do it themselves.

    • @julians9763
      @julians9763 22 дня назад +2

      You made a wise choice to quit alcohol. It's not easy to find a support group that encourages you to be a teetotaler. You don't need friends who socialise with you as long as there is alcohol.

    • @observingsystem
      @observingsystem 21 день назад +2

      @@julians9763 Thank you. It's not easy at all, no, which is strange to me, because why do they mind so much? Is it because they know they look so dumb when they're drunk, to a sober person, that they're embarrassed to get drunk in front of them? Maybe they need to try and turn it into that the person not drinking is the problem, so they don't have to take a look at themselves? I wonder. The friends that were the most pushy about me having to drink at their social events were also people who didn't support me when I was trying to eat healthier and lose weight. So I think they were people who really wanted to keep me at the same level as them, instead of cheering on a friend for making a good change or even saying "you know what? I'll join you on this journey!"
      I think a lot of "friendships" aren't really friendships, no. They're fairweather friends, people that share drinks, going out and dopamine bursts together. When one of them goes through something bad in their lives they don't have the capacity to be there for them, it's all fluff, no substance.

    • @julians9763
      @julians9763 9 дней назад +1

      @@observingsystem I read you reply. I can encourage you to make the best choice and keep close the persons that are supportive of your lifestyle choices. You can keep acquaintances for work and you may not have the choice of who you may be working with. When it comes to your leisure social life and wellness, the choice of friends and acquaintances are worth thinking about. It is not pleasing to be with people who are influenced by big food,big pharma, and mainstream crass commercialist culture. If people you consider friends, are not with you when you are at your worse, you will understand that they really were not your friends.

      @observingsystem 8 дней назад

      @@julians9763 Oh yeah, absolutely. For me these things were issues 20 years ago, when it was also more socially accepted to be that toxic, to tell people to drink, etc. I left those people far behind me and I have a totally different life of no alcohol, drinking lots of tea, eating healthy and keeping active as much as possible. No regrets!

    What's odd is that while I appreciate all of the celebs and well-known folks that have shared this information, my dog has taught me how to avoid addictive poisons. Like most dogs, he LOVES food. However, he has allergy/diet issues. After a string of different foods we tried with him, those that made him feel bad or off, he would eventually avoid eating, even though he was really hungry. He would smell it, look at me, then walk away without eating it. One would think, well duh, of course... if it made him feel bad / sick, avoiding it was the easy answer.

    I started drinking at parties for fun when I was 17. This turned in to a serious problem real fast. By the time I was 19 I got 3 DUI's. It controlled big parts of my life for 20 years. I finally had a major spiritual awakening in 2018. I have not drank since. I hate alcohol and what it was doing in my life. I will never go back. Please don't drink. It turns into a problem on its own you don't need to be predisposed for alcoholism.

    I am not sure about that. Yes, for sure some are. I left my binge drinking days about 5 years ago, but consume some small amount now. I had a bottle of red wine during Thanksgiving. Before the pandemic, the Costco liquor department was 'X' big. During the pandemic, Costco was deemed too important, and was left open as other food and drug stores were. The liquor department grew by 50%, and liquor was being placed on display when you walked in. Today, the liquor department has shrunk, but still bigger maybe 20% than prior to the pandemic. This tells me that liquor is being consumed more than we started, about 5 years ago now.

    I find excuses all the time for drinking… my personal life, my job, the politics… Sometimes I get this feeling, that nothing can stop me from doing it on a daily basis.
    Maybe you’ll delete my comment…
    But I want to say one thing, even if now my life is a mess and I’m a functional alcoholic, who goes to work every day and then drinks to feel better again…
    That thing is… If someone doesn’t feel 100 procent sure that he or she doesn’t need the booze anymore, and if this decision doesn’t come from within, like the wish to drink, which also comes from within… THEN IT COULD BE A WASTE OF TIME TO TRY TO EXPLAIN THIS PERSON THAT ALCOHOL IS A POISON… The change comes from the deep of the being, and there someone must understand WHY HE/SHE DRINKS IN THE FIRST PLACE? This big understanding can bring light in the shadowed mind of a consumer.
    Greetings from Germany!

I drank a lot less than you, so it was easier for me, but it's not impossible. You need the right help to get you going through the first months to a year. It's hard to take that first step and ask for help, but remember it's a strength to ask for help when you need it, not a weakness. And try to find something you always wanted to do, like if you want to learn something, play the guitar or whatever, another language, or you always wanted to do tai chi, something like that, especially something that promotes calmness and a healthy body, it helps the mind. It helps to have something new to focus on and especially if you do it in a group setting you could meet different people, have a fresh start with different influences. The first beginning is difficult, but after a while it gets easier and you'll feel proud of yourself for overcoming it.

      Yes you can. There are complete basket cases out there that have come back from this. AA helped me but that's just me. Speak with a doctor. There are options for you ❤

    1 year no drinking. Now I think Why would I want to drink ? I honestly think society is just brainwashed I was too. Drunk people are rude crude and annoying just like I was when I drank. But I thought I was funny. It doesn’t making you funny it turn you into a monkey brain that thinks silly things are funny. Be blessed

      There was a true story I read a while back about a woman who fell 33,000 feet from an airplane without a parachute and survived. Of course, every one else we know of who falls from that height dies. This is why anecdotes aren't all that useful.
