Spring Bear Hunting and Turkey Hunting with Primitive Bow

  • This week Clay Hayes heads up the mountain to snow line to do a little spring bear hunting and turkey hunting with his primitive bow on public land in Idaho.
Glassing for black bears from a high vantage point is a great way to hunt in the spring. Bears will be concentrated on the narrow band of early spring green up. On this hunt, the green up was 1500 feet lower than camp.
Aside from bear hunting with a bow, Idaho has some amazing turkey hunting as well. Always looking for a challenge, Clay is attempting to harvest a gobbler with his self bow. But, the kicker is, he's trying to do it without a pop up blind. Turkeys have some of the sharpest eye sight of any game animal so any movement is seen immediately. This makes getting a shot with a long bow extremely difficult.
Be sure to check out Clay's other traditional archery, bowhunting, survival, bushcraft, and self reliance videos.

You nailed it when you said Turkey hunting in the south is a religion, growing up in Monroe County, AL we had people join clubs just to hunt turkeys. And if you told folks you didn’t hunt birds you were chastised and became the butt of some jokes. Needless to say, I enjoy hunting turkeys quite a bit down here, it definitely challenges your patience.

nooooo..... high end broadhead meets rock, OUCH! "ever eat a pine tree? many parts are edible" (Euell Gibbons). as much as i love watching you build bows, i think these out in the field vids are my faves. reminds me a bit of your book. your positive attitude, and humor in the face of a failure is a lesson in itself. great vid Clay!

Lol...like how you keep it real. You could have edited out, but you didn't. Keep up the great work. I rather see you try hard miss and keep going then watch some of these others who just edited everything out except a harvest.

Spring Gobbler season is big here in PA too. It is my favorite hunting... real tough to harvest a bird in up state PA on the public lands. I know a lot of people who have shot many deer with bow and gun...but few of those same hunters have tagged many turkeys in the spring. When it comes to turkey hunting..it's their game I just play it...It's hard enough to get one with a shotgun...a bow would be a real challenge....

Nice shooting, Clay! Anybody can hit that big Ol' turkey but it takes a keen eye and a steady hand to hit that skinny little tree! LOL. That's what makes the traditional way so enjoyable, brother, and it's good to see that side of it...keep up the great work my friend...

loved the vid thank you, that turkey shot reminded me of my first shot ever at an animal with board bow, it was on a grouse by West Yellowstone MT, done the exact thing thwack in the tree thwack into another tree shot four arrows and missed all four lol, great times

Turkeys are a blast once you learn a little about them. It’s a lot like calling bull elk, just with a big bird. Very interactive type of hunting.

I feel your pain, but It hurts so good. I have been traditional turkey hunting for 3 years only building natural blinds and in a wooded area with a very small turkey population. It’s really about he hunt and not the kill... I finally called a Tom in to about 15 yards away last weekend, but unfortunately hesitated and didn’t take the shot because of some bushes and trees between us. It was an amazing experience nonetheless. Awesome video and I love what you do.

Chris Sibert you have to use common sense bud. Most birds are attracted to the color red especially turkeys and Einstein they are not. It ain't hunting back east with a hunter behind ever tree.

😅😅😅Been there. Turkey hunting is a bastard especially for us crazy traditional idiots. But we still do it. The trick I've found is just to have a fall tag with me while I deer hunt. Then they are all around me. To actually pursue them is usually a fail.

That "THWACK" with the tree is an all too familiar sound to me, brother! Sorry, but I had to laugh... I killed my first turkey last year and did it without a blind. Pulled him away from some hens from about 200 yards down to 15, but it was with a compound, so I'll give myself half credit.

Loved it... what kind of wood was that last arrow. first time I've seen one split like that . I've blown them a part. shatter or just snap but that was different. also like all your hunting vids, this one is about the hunt, it's worried about the ego busting kill, I get the experience of the hunt ,, ya leave that far off bear. cause if you shoot it you have to pack it out. I love the way you put it all together, looking forward to more

I am wanting to get into archery for whitetail. Am fascinated with traditional and more specific a recurve. Do i start archery with a recurve or do i go with a compound bow and then go to recurve? Any advice would be appreciated thanks

    • @clayhayeshunter
      @clayhayeshunter  6 лет назад +1

That’s a personal decision. If killing a deer is highly important to you a compound is the better option. If you’re hunting more for the experience and connection then perhaps a recurve.
