- Hey everyone! Here's the next episode of Three-For-All with 3 Nigel Tufnel Licks From 1984. So, I figured what better way to kick off the month of April than a terrifying lesson with the greatest guitarist in the world, Mr. Nigel Tufnel - so let's dive in!
The concept behind this lesson hit me after the recent announcement that Spinal Tap is returning for another film, so after locating a rare bootleg of Nigel's historic guitar solo from the first film back in '84, which captures Nigel in his expressive and aggressive glory, I felt this lesson would really inspire all of the viewers out there with an assortment of tricky bits and challenging licks.
The ideas shared in this lesson include some controlled feedback examples (one with violin bowing techniques), a tricky melodic sequence that is almost impossible to play, an advanced and difficult b5 melodic phrase, a brutal shred lick that will keep you awake at night, a finger-twisting symmetrical idea to punish your fingers, and much more!
Needless to say, if you're a Spinal Tap or Nigel Tufnel fan, a player searching for an intense challenge on the first day of April, or maybe you're just curious what all the fuss is about - this lesson is totally for you! Give this episode a view, leave some comments/feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!
And one more thing - Happy April Fool's Day!
Happy April Fool's Day everyone!
😂👍
🤘 SPINAL TAP 🤘
"Lick my luv pump" in D minor ! Happy AFD !
You too David! Hope everyone has a great day. 🥰😊
dude...awesome ha 😎
Why must you suffer with those little sandwiches?😸✌️💜🤍💙❤
What a model you guitar ?
Spinal Tap are impossible to copy, having played rock before anyone else even thought about it. Well played 🙂
Nigels work is so.. unique, I can't imagine anyone attempting a "how to" on YT. But once again you've done an outstanding job!
Greatest 3-for-all in the history of RUclips 🤘
How you did this with a straight face is Academy award caliber. Bravo👏👏👏
Pro tip: Make sure that amp is at 11 for the proper tonal quality. 🤘
Well 11 is one more then 10, isn’t it! Fun post!
LMAO!! I was cracking up when I saw the title of this one. Excellent choice!! The first Spinal Tap was such a classic that I can’t wait for Nigel to show what he’s been up to. Thanks again for an extreme headbangim’ lesson!!
I love the fact that you put Guitar Shop up in the album picture frame. There's obviously no parallels between Lord Tufnel and Jeff Beck.
Brilliant!!!
The Rutles are first with Tap a close second.
You’re a Genius! Great video!
I couldn't stop smiling! 🤣😂🤣😊
Yes!
Fender Play actually has a course on and the tab to 'Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight'!
You’re usually spot on, but you’re out of your league here. I’ve only known one man who could play Tufnel like Tufnel, but he was killed in a tragic gardening accident.😢
Omg!! Awesome stuff!!🤘🏼😂🤘🏼
you are the king brewha! 😂
Hopefully your amp was turned up to 11 in the making of this lesson
The minute I saw this I popped in a piece of gum and then starting my exaggerated chewing ….
Well since my baby left me…
I found a new place to dwell…
Nah, that’s alright….
😂
😂😂😂
I have an old Guitar World where Nigel Tufnel teaches how to use facial impressions that go along with the notes you play. Complete with photos of the expressions and so on. Also how different kinds of screws used for screwing the pickups to the body affect the sound, it makes more difference than one could think at first. And how to use your hair to play harmonics. Of all the lessons in Guitar World over the years, this is the one I still find most useful.
'the amp capo' lol!
I'd love a copy of that!
It's the April 1992 issue if you want to try to Ebay it. Spinal Tap have the cover while the Yngwie lesson blurb is relegated to a tiny insert in the top corner. That says it all about where on the guitar player totem pole Nigel Tufnel is.
I used to play Spinal Tap songs in one of my bands, especially Hell Hole. Tonight I’m Gonna Rock You Tonight is one of my favorite riffs. Every guitarist should learn some Spinal Tap. Not even joking
Amazing lesson! My band tried to cover some Tap, but our drummer kept exploding.
hate that when that happens
@@greg77hot Nice. Forgotten jem. Was just going over that bit with my wife a couple days ago, lol!
hopefully he went bang on the down beat..
Respect for the straight face shooting this. I couldn't keep a straight face just watching this. The tone of your voice implying a failed attempt to hide your full and total admiration for the unfathomable godgiven guitartalent that is Tufnel should land you a spot on SNL or something (we need more Tufnel!).
Brilliant!!! I was laughing the entire episode! You totally made my day. Thank you David!
Nigel really nails the "whales humping" tone. Amazing!
I've been trying to learn the violin solo for ages. Can you give it another try if I send you my violin?
I'll never know how you pulled this off with a straight face. Well done!
His greatness will NOT be denied!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
he is like the john lennon of ice skating.
"Intavenus de Milo" cracks me up every time.
I feel like shark sandwich was under-recorded.
Just a 2-word review!😎
they should do an acoustic version called tadpole baguette
@@Dougwarren69 i can stretch to 3 words.. 'a vinyl record'
@@jibicusmaximus4827 well done 🤘
You don't record evvy meddle in dubbly
I've been waiting for Nigel and Yngwie to do a project together, now that would be awesome.🤘
Perfection has been achieved. No one else should try.
This is amazing! Best guitar lesson of all time!!
You tried, but no one could ever come close to big N. If only Jimi and Nigel could have played together, of course Jimi would have had to play backup. Long live Nigel! No joke!
I believe that Jimi would have quit the guitar outright after witnessing Tufnel's incredible playing and musicality. 🤣
" That six inch Stonehenge was in danger of being crushed by a Dwarf!" 🤣😄 (Not verbatim)
You definitely fooled me at first! That was a good one! You’re the only one who actually fooled me today! Happy April Fool’s Day Dave!
I struggled with some of these licks! Very underrated Axe Man.
I see you were too afraid to attempt the section of his live solo were he starts playing another guitar…with his foot!
Love that classic opening to the Squig-tones album, where before the guitars kick in,
you hear that voice bellow, HELL-OOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
Trust me, even if you had a violin you wouldn’t have been able to reproduce Nigel’s mastery in that solo! ;-)
This upload takes its rightful place on my Spinal Tap Archives playlist- don't miss it, thanks for keeping their legacy alive😂..,...p.s.- i thought Shark Sandwich was rereleased as shit sandwich- maybe as an import(Japan)
It's been said that the only guitarist Jimi Hendrix feared...was Nigel Tufnel. lol
Brilliant bro! The legend of Nigel Tufnel... You don't want that smoke! 🤣🤣
You should do an episode breaking down the lead in 'Pictures' by Sheryl Crow and Kid Rock. That'll be deep.
The guitar sound on Sex Farm is excellent. Not kidding when I say it changed my life. I'd never heard of Spinal Tap, but it was on a Metal compilation album and it blew me away!
You need the 8 single coil guitar to get that sound you are looking for I think it was used on the Smell the Glove album! Happy April Fools Day another great lesson! Learned not to follow Nigels lead lol!
Honestly, it kinda bothers me that you would make this video knowing damn well NONE of us have the skills to play this 😠
I don’t think the issue I was the band was off I think the issue may have been a stone henge monument endangered of being crushed by a dwarf…
“ I raise a very practical and real question are we doing stone henge tomorrow?”
Damn it!!
I showed up without my violin nor flying V as well. This lesson went to eleven.🎸👀
probably the legendary inspiration behind virtuosos such as lil' wayne and steven segall
I think u mean 💩 Sandwich😂😂😂
This is in D minor a bit of a Mozart and a Bach piece more of a Mach piece if you will…
This on is call lick my love pump
Can't wait for your tutorial on "Lick my Love Pump!"
Don’t touch it…don’t even look at it!!!
Shark Sandwich had only a two word review...Shit Sandwich...Lol
Also importantly: they were the first band to record in Dobly.
Of course he was really a Jazz Fusion Country player !
I love you wore the shirt!… but its not green!… well…is it???. ;)
amazing! we mere mortals can only aspire to such greatness
According to Nigel
Dm is the saddest of all keys
Ha! Best lesson ever!!
HISTORIC...hopefully there's no RUclips violations.
i'll have to get back to Johnnny Winter episode,.....to get my sanity back...cheers....
Frankly I'm partial to their new Jazz direction, after Nigel exited the group. "Jazz Odyssey", A freeform sonic adventure for the senses. Although I must admit, I'm still a little bit perturbed that the puppet show got first billing. Great job Dave, you can do no wrong. 🤘🎸
“We’re not about to do a free-form jazz odyssey in front of a festival crowd.”
@@joeraymorton2414 😎🤘
no fool like an aprils fool.....on easter monday...with some brit rock comedians...yep.....figures....i liked those 2 #1 licks.....and yes you do have to get a "flying V".....why not trade in your prs....you hardly use it...haaa....
I saw Tap in 1987. They had Def Leppard and AC/DC opening, but we just said "GIVE US THE TAP"!!! Poor boys never had a chance next to the mighty Tap.
PS: Don't forget to tune to 11 Dave.
I worked on a non-broadcast pilot with most of the Christopher Guest crew years ago. Michael McKean signed my TIST deluxe DVD as David St. Hubbins. Super cool & friendly guy.
That was f@cking brilliant! The surviving members of the Folksmen would agree!
Long time Spinal Tap fan, I bought their ULTRA rare EP "Dubbly Indemnity" back in '79 and been a fan ever since, I even tried forming a Spinal Tap Tribute Band called "Tap This" but we had a really hard time keeping Drummers, so we broke up...
I forgot today was April Fool’s Day! I was completely confused by this at first!😂
Copping Nigel’s licks is like trying to get “fingerprints from vomit “
This Lesson Goes to Eleven!
Next year how about breaking down some Dewey Cox ? Chord Play of Guilty as Charged maybe ?
They were still booing him when we went on...lol
I just revisited This is Spinal Tap two nights ago... TRIPPY!!!😮
Thanks for the tutorial I’ve been trying to figure these Nigel Tufnel licks out since 1984. Finally an instructor who can break down these mysteries! Wait April Fools? Wtf?
"Actually." --HOW many times did David say that? (halfway convinced) 🤣
The funniest thing about this video is Dave trying to play badly, it's like Steve Vai trying to f... up at the end of the Crossroads duel. What's not so funny is that Dave trying to play badly still sounds WAY better than me trying to play.., well..., anything. 😂
I was born in 73 and when the movie came out I was only 8 or 9 i think. I didn't get the joke till like the third time I watched it on vhs brilliant. Soooo funny. Great talents. Thanx Brewster. Cheers
That was the best thing about it for me. I was probably about 13 whenever we somehow got HBO for a minute in my house I’d already been playing guitar and had studied the Binge and Purge videos so obviously I had heard of “Tap” but just catching it a few minutes after it had started and being young and still figuring out what pro wrestling actually was I just wasn’t sure if Spinal Tap were real or if it was just a joke, turns out it’s a little of everything. Love Spinal Tap just the inside jokes that come from it , I can pretty much tell who I will get along with by causally mentioning “this one goes to eleven” scan the room looking for anyone cracking a smile ok they get it they are probably cool .
Several of the guitar channels I follow played April Fools. You win hands down. I did a spit take with my vodka when I read the thumbnail. Yeah, it went to 11.
11/10 from me!
Ahhh, April 1st! Good one man, very important band
I’m currently working on an amp that goes to 11.5 for Marshall. 12 was just too much.
Shouldn't your T-shirt, which shows your exact inner structure, be green?
The shred Part you play is crap.you Kids nowadays use way to much metronoms and other modern fancy stuff! Try harder. Love from Germany. 🎉🎉🎉
Mt belief in you went up to 11, until you burst the bubble at the end. You should be a politician with that beautiful BS! (Nice job...keep on rockin😅)
I was in a small pub in LA back in ‘91 and Nigel got up on stage and played a theme and variations of Lick my Love Pump on pan pipes with a Floyd rose. We all wept. In fact the loudest sobs came from Jeff Beck who was in town for a Hollywood Bowl gig. Stunning player, and my biggest influence.🤘🤘🤘
Pretty sure Nigel was a session player on Lenny and the Squigtones “Milwaukee Moon”.
What a Great Idea! Very well done episode!👍Drummers may not want to get into Spinal Tap though
Nice joking around from the usual. Excellent 😅
Would you please do an instructional video using the amplifier capo?
I can't seem to get the proper tone.
Brilliant! Thank you for covering this rock icon, hahahaha. Love it.
Look still got the old tagger on it. Never even played don’t touch it…. Well don’t point even it can’t be played.
Love it !! Great humor , Dave !!!
you got to get out of the grid to get that one lick mate, think its slowing down in increments, it's just free time, i guess? a dramatic classical kind of sound? it stutters is another way of saying it, i found placing first note on the 'and' of the 4 of the count in, another way made me think it's in 10 notes or 5+5 but not in strict time, cool video and prank for those who didn't know lol.
Can anyone out there transcribe “Lick My Love Pump” on the keys?
The best-played April Fools jokes make you think is this real?
Oh B.T.W ...will there be tabs for these ?
He's known for his solos. They're his trademark 😂😂
Love it! It'll take weeks to get those licks down, but I'm working on it.
What a fantastic video have a wonderful day ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
