Hi David. Thanks for doing a great job on showing and explaining these Elvis albums. August 16th is my birthday, and I remember hearing on the radio at 5:30pm Elvis Presley passed away. I was just getting into Elvis's music. I loved the Guitar Man & Our Memories of Elvis volumes One and Two. I really love the song released that became a top 10 Country Hit "Are You Sincere". Elvis really delivered a strong vocal performance. The Guitar Man album is one of my favorites. I loved how Felton Jarvis redid Guitar Man, which became a number 1 Country Hit for Elvis. I grew up listening to Country Music, and Felton really did a great job adding a Country feel to these songs . From the Our Memories of Elvis Volume 2, I loved Elvis version of Conway Twittys There's A Honky Tonk Angel. That sing became a Top 10 Country Hit for Elvis. Thanks again for posting these albums. I'm looking for the ones I'm missing for my collection.

Liked the trip down memory lane...nice to know others experiences about Elvis and how you grew up being a fan 😊
I'm the same today, let's celebrate him! ❤ Thanks for the contents and for standing by our man since then.
In my case, was born two years after , xmas 79, and my parents bought an Akai hifi equipment with wich, growing up, I learnt how to play vinyl records...but being a 80's/90's kid they didn't buy any Elvis. And my father started with CDs and the same. Then that was something that happened to me on my own, cannot remember well when exactly I heard his voice for the very first time but I know that was the starting point. It took many years, yes, it was not popular to be an Elvis fan and I wasn't sharing that with anyone because like you, didn't find any Elvis 'friends'.
Anyway, 2022 I got to keep old Akai and I decided to have It checked and in shape again, bought new speakers and started to think again that I had no Elvis in vinyl... So I started with the original albums, when he was alive and kicking. And today I'm a collector in the making I guess...I didn't plan to be one, just wanted to enjoy his glorious voice trough the old analog friend.
Now I buy all kinds, 45s, LPs, compilations... and thanks to RUclips I found different channels of Elvis fans like yours that have knowledge about his music, releases, collecting, etc.
And...today of all days I'm going to the post office to pick my four 45s that I bought from Japan, trough eBay from a trusted seller 😁
So it is fun and amazing to be an Elvis fan 47 years after he left the big building ⚡
Thank you, take care and keep up!

I was 14years young when Elvis died and an Elvis Fan since 1975 (and the proud owner of 20 Elvis Albums). I still remember when i bought my very first Bootleg Album "Command Performances" in 1979! But the RCA 8LP-Set "Elvis Aron Presley " 1980 was really mind blowing (and pricey at the time).Another great Album, also produced by Joan Deary, was the RCA Album "Greatest Hits Volume 1" (later available on a super rare australian BMG/RCA CD). "Guitar Man" is still one of my favorite "Remix" Albums up to this day. The Record was also available on CD by BMG/RCA in Germany and Australia (both CD Pressings are very rare).
Thank you David for another great Episode!

Hi David, there is also a unique version of Merry Christmas Baby on This is Elvis. It’s shorter and backed with strings. It’s very appealing and should be better known. I have no problem with contemporary/after the fact editing and additions, so long as the originals remain in circulation. The UK I Was The One was a terrific package. I didn’t feel the same about Guitar Man, though. I already knew all the songs and hoped to hear, at least, alternate vocals. I think this was also said at the time in Elvis Monthly. Speaking of EM, I had no trouble locating more unusual Elvis records in the 80s - I ordered them from Heanor Record Centre in Derbyshire. A letter and a cheque (or cut out order form) would bring a slightly dog eared copy of Raised on Rock or Fool flying to the door, any time. The little free catalogue and occasional posters with records on were a gold mine in those days. My friend and I got every album we could.

    • @ElvisPresleyInJapan
      @ElvisPresleyInJapan  12 дней назад

Funnily enough, I was thinking of doing a video on This is Elvis, as there are a few edits you can't get anywhere else, and I've just got hold of the FTD CD version with its extra material. I didn't mind Guitar Man as many of the songs were new to me at the time. The sound hasn't aged well, though.

Thanks for sharing those memories. I was thirteen in 1977 . In middle school I kept my being a big Elvis fan on the down low. By the time I was in high school I more open about it. I got kidded a little but because I was an athlete and considered a good guy it was all done good naturedly. I had a friend who was really into having a great sounding stereo system. He didn’t understand my love of Elvis but would give him a listen. I remember that he really liked If You Talk In Sleep and a cassette I made of a bunch of songs from Elvis’ 60s movie soundtracks. I used to go with him to a record shop in a nearby town that had the best prices on albums. The owner was a big Elvis fan and had every Elvis that was available in the catalog in stock. There would be multiple copies of each album all separated out with the dividers used to identify the album, rather than just who the artist name.

Hi Dave ,great video that ,it’s amazing that’s it’s 47 years today ,a remember a was 17 and me dad woke me up for work it was early morning and he told me through the bedroom door Elvis had died a was completely stunned ,but like you rightly said it’s a tribute that his music is still relevant and played today ,a think EL has become more famous and iconic in the 47 years since his passing than he ever was when he was alive for his 42 years ,back in the late 70s ,early 80s a was still buying primarily his earlier output ,but I do remember buying the this is Elvis double album and Elvis in concert ,the two 56 sessions albums I had both of those but like your self I sold a lot of my collection round about same time as you sold yours ,av always regretted it but a didn’t really have a choice ,am buying again and loving it ,some of the Memphis output now is really great the way they’ve stripped some of the orchestration and backing vocals ,a do think like you that some of the early 70s output suffered from over production ,great video Dave respectfully delivered ,take care ,tony .

Hi, Tony. I imagine it would have been more of a shock for you at 17 than it was for me at 10. It still amazes and pleases me how popular Elvis is in the UK and elsewhere in Europe. Unfortunately, here in Japan, there are just a few of us hardcore fans left. I'm still on the fence with the Memphis CD set, given the negative reviews. I'm hoping to find a used set over here in the coming weeks. Cheers, Tony.

Great video David, surely a walk down memory lane. With the Our Memories series up to Memphis Record and Stereo '57 you nailed my favorite alltime records. I was 5 years old when Elvis died and learned the music through the K-Tel Love Songs compilation my father bought. My parents bought me quite a few records from 1984 and around that I also started buying Elvis records myself. At first quite a few Camdens which were released by dozens per year in the UK and Europe.

Oh yes, I remember K-Tel. I had a couple - The Ultimate Performance and a gospel compilation. I recall they always had paintings on the covers, rather than photos of Elvis, presumably to save money. You're right, there were tons of Camden releases in Europe, long after they stopped making them in America. They couldn't fool me, though. I could see what they were doing, mixing up the same few dozen songs and re-releasing them in new covers. 😆

Great video David! Not glum here, I did my mourning 47 years ago. That was a bad day, the only time I was reduced to tears over a celebrity passing. We have a lot in common regarding our experience as fans and collectors. I was 15 when he died and I was the only die hard Elvis fan in my high school. I did have one friend who was kind of a step above the average fan and a couple casual fans. When This Is Elvis came out I figured it would never get to our smaller community, so on 2 separate nights I brought different friends into New York City to see it, the NYC crowd loved it. Much to my surprise the film DID get to a small theater near my home and I went to see it alone twice more. Up until then it was my only experience seeing Elvis on a big screen. I too loved the Our Memories of Elvis albums and listened to them over and over again. I liked Guitar Man as well but not quite as much. JI moved away from collecting a little earlier than you did. My marriage, house and then kids left little money to buy much in the way of music, although I did pick up several CD box sets in the 90s and early 2000s. I stopped buying vinyl around 1984 or so. When Ebay became a thing I actually considered selling off my vinyl collection, but saw that my collection of mostly orange label re-issues were not going to command a price that would make it worth the trouble. I'm glad I held onto them now. When I took them down from the shelf I hadn't remembered how well I took care of most of them. The vinyl had sat un-played for many years and I only got back into it a couple of years ago and I've really been enjoying it.

I enjoyed the ‘Guitar Man’ album. I believe that Felton Jarvis recorded new backings and generally dialled back the original background vocals which suited my preferences. I bought a CD variant of it which was re-titled ‘Burning Love’ with some extra tracks. I was a 50’s Rock’n’Roll guy in the mid-late 70’s guy and didn’t find any people at school on my wavelength. The Elvis The Movie release had the audio improved significantly on those early T.V appearances. The controversial Shelby Singleton ‘Orion-Jimmy Ellis’ overdubs on the Jerry Lee Lewis Duets album, fooled a few people. I bought the single ‘Save The Last Dance For Me’ . Its back sleeve had emblazoned on it “It must be Elvis” and I think Todd Slaughter was mentioned in that quote. Around the late 70’s I bought the Elvis live at Eagles Hall, with a Scotty Moore interview (Elvis The First Year)on the other side, which came out on Virgin Records.Another Shelby Singleton cash-in was Elvis Presley-The Sun Years. Very low-overall but I was more disappointed that there were no interviews with Marion Keisker or Sam Phillips. The latter album perpetuates the myth that it’s D.J Fontana who was the drummer on some of Elvis’s Sun recordings.Regarding stripping back Elvis’ recordings,it still goes on today. I believe there is a ‘Elvis in Memphis’ out right now where they have presented some of the songs that way. The originals will always be there,so I don’t mind that process taking place. I only wish the same would happen with some of Jerry Lee Lewis’ albums with Golden Hits (overdressed re-recordings!of his Sun hits) and The Killer Rocks On(embalmed with strings and choirs).

From other comments and yours, I can see there were quite a few of us going through similar experiences at the same time. I did get into lots of other artists later in my teens, but I always stuck with Elvis. Thanks, David

I've looked now and i've got a counterfeit cd of "Our memories" too... wich is very strange, because i bought it when it came out directly from the It's Elvis time fanclub, who produced the original cd.

Oh, no. Here's my source for the "counterfeit" theory:

Alternatively, it could simply be a legitimate reissue. To me, the text seems a little fuzzy, but I have no other copy to compare it to you.

Thanks for sharing David. For years I never owned Rock 'n Roll No 2 for exactly the same reason - The '56 Sessions 1 and 2 😊 Hated the Guitar Man album at the time and still do, always felt to me like a pointless exercise in how to make Elvis sound lame and plodding. By the time of his passing, I'd manage to amass something in the region of 30 albums, which is pretty good going for an 11 year-old, but then I was a spoilt only child! In the subsequent years it become easier to fill in the gaps in the collection when they reissued much of the back catalogue on International at budget prices

😆 "Lame and plodding". Imagine that for an album title. Yes, I fondly remember the International albums from around 1980. At only £2.99 a pop, I managed to get quite a collection in just a few months. Cheers, Sean.

@@ElvisPresleyInJapan there's a competition right there - think of the artist or band most deserving of Lame and Plodding as an album title 😂

The reason why RCA didn’t include, “Don’t Cry Daddy” (and or that matter,) “The Wonder Of You”) on “Gold Records, Volume 5”, was because they had previously issued the song/s on, “Greatest Hits, Volume 1”, (regardless of the fact DCD was an unreleased live version). 😮
I still think that the exclusive mix of “If I Can Dream” is the best mix I’ve ever heard on “Gold Records, Volume 5”. Check it out!!! 😊
    Thanks David.

Possibly, but the two albums were released two and a half years apart. They could easily have made it a 12-track LP too.
Interesting point about If I Can Dream. It might be worth exploring the different mixes in a video. Thanks.

@@ElvisPresleyInJapan Absolutely, I totally agree with you and it definitely would have enhanced the album with a more comprehensive outlook on actual “Gold” records and chart hits.
Some people really like the “new” (at that time) exclusive mixes featured throughout the LP, especially “If You Talk In Your Sleep”, but I’m not so crazy about “Burning Love”, “Moody Blue” and “Way Down”.
