Earlene Brown! I remember her from Roller Derby, many years later -- she wore "747" on the back of her jersey. At the time of this show she was not only a champion shot putter, but held the women's record for throwing a softball.
My Dad, Robert Blair Kurtz Sr. played football with both of these male contestants. He played high school ball with Jack LaLanne at BHS (Berkeley High School) in the mid 1930s and later played pro ball with Kenny Washington in 1944 and the San Francisco Clippers. My Dad was 6' 2" and Jack was 5' 6", so this must have been some huddle with the little guy telling the big guys what to do. My Dad said that Jack was known as 'Old Fruits and Nuts' because that's all he seemed to eat. Dad said that Kenny was a good friend, as well as an outstanding player. Kenny would later become the first black player in the NFL. Strangely Kenny also played college ball with Jackie Robinson at UCLA. Kenny career rushing for 1914 yards at UCLA was their school record for more than 30 years. Kenny was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1956 and his number 13 was the first to be retired at UCLA. Kenny served in 1945 in WW2 in Europe and was consider a

'Old Fruits and Nuts', lol-- That is rather funny, and with in the context of the times, a rather double meaning nickname. Funny to read of it, as my Physical Instructor, or Gym Teacher, in Junior High..a few times mentioned that nickname for Mr. LaLane...having known of of him personally, in his California days, and indicated that..the nickname, was more on que than a jovial quote, Funny how my Phz Ed instructor like his 'fruits and nuts''' LMAO...

I remember watching Jack LaLanne's show on tv in the 60s. He was also a chiropractor but focused on health and nutrition. As he lived to be 96 and still fit in his 90s he was a good example of "practice what you preach"
When I think of my very earliest memories of television, Jack LaLanne comes to mind. His show used to open with an image of him in silhouette. LaLanne, The Bugs Bunny Show, and Mr. Ed, along with the local program The One O'Clock Show, are my very first memories of television.

Jack LaLane was very handsome. I watched him as a child, and watched him into adulthood. He was devoted to his cause. God Bless his soul. Watching these old shows, it seems my life is flashing before me.

@@CmonstoleCmonstole Well, to some extent, maximum age is built into our genes. Hence, you can be in the best physical condition, and then go downhill rapidly as you approach your own limit. In addition, the immune system weakens as we age, regardless of how otherwise healthy we are...making us vulnerable to ailments that wouldn't have been an issue when younger. Hence, Jack LaLanne died of pneumonia, a common cause of death of oldsters who might have survived if it struck them at a younger age. You can bet that Jack was exercising regularly up until he was sickened with it.
If anyone had deserved to make 100, he did; he certainly tried hard enough. Great man who promoted great ideas.

Oh, the memories of childhood! Jack LaLanne on TV! (Incidentally, his European Health Spas evolved into Bally Total Fitness, which I was a member of for years.) And to see him on YBYL...

Actually, being a skinny kid, I watched the Jack LaLane show a lot. Basically there was an honesty and sincere intention about Jack LaLane that I will always remember. Later, when I went through my physical fitness period, I always thought of Jack LaLane. I still do.

I watched this show as a young black boy during the 1960's. Groucho was creativity funny and extremely gracious to all including blacks without the racist jibes common during that Era. No one left a loser, seeing Jack lalanne and other guests knowledge of geography highlights the ignorance of today's young. We need TV shows like this today. Wanna be internet influencers can't compete with the real talent here. RiP Jack and Groucho.

There were times when George Fenneman had some really funny quips and this episode has more than a few. Awesome stuff right off the cuff, especially coming from the straight man.
A little disappointed because Jack Lalane was a true athlete and for the most part backed his claims up. As a skinny kid he helped me build up. Thanks Jack!

Thanks for all these episodes. When Ch. 44 in San Francisco ran these in the mid-70s, they cut the NBC logo at the end, and I always wondered what the spinning film reel was about.

So, Jack LaLanne (you may remember him from an episode of The Simpson's. He pulled a tug boat.) lived to be 95! With all that exercise and extra vitamins, 95!
Last night I watched an episode of YBYL with a man who lived to be 102. His secret was, he ate whatever he wanted, smoked since he was 2, yes 2, and certainly drank.
2 very different life styles but both got up there in years. But they both had one thing in common. They stayed active and had fun. That might be the secret to a long life. And even if it's not, have fun anyway. No one wants to be old And miserable.
Wow, this is why I've always enjoyed this show, besides witnessing Groucho's best ever quick wittedness, it's seeing famous persons from the past, before I was born. As a young child, I remember seeing Earlene Brown as a member of the Los Angeles Thunderbirds of roller derby, she wore the number "747", to accentuate her size, I never knew about her illustrious track & field career until now.
I knew of Kenny Washington as being a teammate of Jackie Robinson at UCLA, and of course, I knew Jack LaLane as being a fitness guru, who well into his 80's and 90's, put to shame many men 50 years younger, when it came to being fit and healthy. I never knew of Evelyn Beebe, she was a very pretty woman however...

Incredible and sad how anyone could not recognize by shape all then 49 USA states. Plus Groucho Marx even supplied an extra clue with each silhouette!My poor dear Mother in MA used a wooden map with 48 states (AK and HI painted on) with me as a boy and, while blindfolded, she had me identify all the states by feel, plus their capitals, largest cities, and key industries. I was about 5 years old, about five years after this telecast. On that map, the states were painted yellow, red, blue, green, and brown, and I still picture each state with that color, some four decades since I have seen that map in person.
And judging by many a news report, utilizing the 'average person on the street' technique; many of the under 30 generation seemingly have an aggregate I.Q. of zilch. LOL, the truly dumbing down of America.

I wish your mom was trying to prepare you for an IQ test she pretty much went overboard with that type of conditioning it's extremely rare in life Americans need to know all of the states by way of their respective shapes My guess is that you don't know the silhouette shapes of the counties in your birth state or any state that you've lived in for the majority of your life.
I have been waiting to see this episode in its entirety for many years as Jack LaLane is one of my heroes. I also love Groucho; therefore it is great seeing them together. However your upload seems to be edited as further hilarious and priceless dialogue between Groucho and Jack is missing.
I heard Jack say Groucho was reading everything from a teleprompter which took some of the charm away as I always thought Groucho was extemporising. Nonetheless this remains one of my favourites.

You're welcome-- and yes, this show is edited. My collection contains some edited shows, some unedited, some recorded from broadcast reruns, some from public domain DVDs. In almost all cases, the openings and closings are not the original versions, but ones slapped on for syndication or by the DVD companies. We'll never see a release of the whole series in complete form, so we have to be grateful for whatever we can get!

STRATMAN firdaus I don't know. I'm trying, with my very, very limited contacts, to find out where the original films are (as if that's going to do me any good-- I have no film equipment anyhow). I know that the entire library of films was turned over to Groucho by NBC because they were otherwise going to destroy them. Groucho's grandson went through the films to prepare them for syndication, logging the shows and doing things like blowing up the frame to obscure the sponsor's logo and adding a white dot on Groucho's mic to obscure the NBC logo. Whether the original 35mm films exist is very much in doubt-- it all depends on how diligent the Marx family was in preserving it. However, I'm fairly confident that the 200 or so syndicated shows still exist (about half of the actual run was never syndicated).
Instinct tells me the original films probably still exist, or at least that most of them do. If I ever turn up any info, I'll let you know. I've been trying for a while now to get in touch with Groucho's grandson but my connections are not strong.
Groucho Marx - You Bet Your Life I can't imagine anyone being interested nor great demand therefore presumably it will not be hard to track down the Groucho family.
I hope Groucho's grandson still has all the tapes and hopefully you can get your hands on them. Unless you try, we will never know.

Jack LaLane told a reporter in an interview not long after this program aired that Groucho was reading everything from a teleprompter, and he meant EVERYTHING, which took some of the charm away as I had always thought that Groucho was extemporizing.

There was no "Teleprompter" in the 50s.
@@ravensbrood3544 Teleprompter's were invented in the late 1940's. So I'm pretty sure they were around in the 1950's.
That would mean that Jack and all the contestants would also be reading off a teleprompter for the dialogue to match up.

More happened in this video than one can see. African Americans were not allowed in most places where no Africans were. They surely were not allowed to touch one another. I am saying this because Groucho made it a point, in my opinion, to shake his hand.

Jack LaLanne did not make it too 100. He was born Sept 26, 1914 and died January 23, 2011. He died at the age of 96.
Edie Koller I don't know how he died but he certainly had a fantastic quality of life for the overwhelming majority of those years.
According to Wikipedia, he died of pneumonia when he didn't have to. He simply refused to see a doctor...

Groucho was mean to Earlene Brown about her size and weight. Even if you account for 1950s sensibilities, he was unkind. Earlene died when she was only 47 after a career in roller derby and a return to her hometown where she worked as a beautician. She was a lovely lady.

Actually, I think the editing is to blame 100% for the appearance of a total lack of audience laughter. There's no way to tell how much the audience laughed since the edit was so abrupt. But to quote a Groucho line from one of the MArx Bros films, "Well, the jokes can't ALL be good. You've got to expect that once in a while."
