If you do spare muffet, you get a LV 19 neutral run that's basically a variant on Queen Alphys. ...and by that I mean it's literally just Queen Alphys but Muffet survived. xD
before there was spamton we already had a money-grubbing, bug-associated minor character who ran a shop with absurd prices, and had a fight with an absolutely banger theme... really makes you think
Muffet is a character that's in a weird place. She's a kickstarter OC but she's given a surprising level of importance. What makes her stand out is how she's actually pretty terrible to people who aren't spiders (yet also makes food out of them). It's a pretty big contrast to the more nice monsters in the rest of the game, and it's not hard to see why people often change her character. Anyway, great work as always!
The fact that she's even given the purple soul mode while the Dreemurrs have no soul modes (Asgore does have light blue and orange attacks), coupled with the fact that only the most important monsters are given soul modes - Alphys and Mettaton (Yellow) Undyne (Green) Skeleton Bros. (Blue) and Mad Mewmew's also there with her Nintendo Switch soul (Blue-Red) that doesn't tie in with a human/soul. Muffet's also the only mini-boss directly in the path to every ending to do a soul gimmick, the only one to have a whole spider bake sale mechanic, and the first Hotland mini-boss to have a whole sequence leading up to the battle (MTT excluded since he's a boss in my heart)
@@CuteShutterBug06 they change the character because of the OTHER fan oc. Created by a complete POS fat neckbearded pedo furry. The fan base is awful. people change anything created by it. If they don't just ignore it outright.
Perhaps an _even more_ obscure interaction is if you somehow get enough money to buy something from the Hotland bake sale, she lets you pass without even entering a battle... ...that is _unless you are on the Genocide route,_ in which case she still fights you anyways, though with an extra line before fighting her.
_"I heard they hate spiders."_ _"I heard they hate everybody."_ _"And even though they gave us their money, I heard..."_ _"They have some awful taste."_
I am actually genuinely surprised at how many people didn't know this side of Muffet. I mean, I get that almost anybody in the right mind would instantly kill her to save time, but even then, I felt like, even beyond the No Mercy route dialogue, this side of her is implied a few times, but at the same time, I can get it. Great analysis video as always!
Yeah, I think it's more the severity of her amorality isn't as apparent in neutral/paci, where her noble goal to save spiders is in the forefront, whereas in No Mercy her speech is FAR more selfish and prideful. Because this dialogue requires you to actively break from the mash Z to win strat Geno encourages, a lot of folks just have no reason to seek it out.
The vast majority of people will ONLY EVER read the ABSOLUTE Surface of whatever they see, having 0 ambition or curiousity to look further. Muffet on a very basic absolute surface level is an altruistic heroic queen of Spiders. All of this context requires playing the game and/or research. And even then, most wont actually see this when playing as they do the very basic surface of everything. This is not to say people CANT look further, just that almost nobody has the drive or ambition to. They think as nessecary, not as a sport or entertainment.
alot of Undertale fans like to hit characters with the BLACK OR WHITE MORALITY BEAM which takes away alot of their interesting grey traits. afterall, look how many fans paint Toriel as a 'can do no wrong' figure and paint Asgore as 'pure evil'. thank you for painting them grey for the general populous to hopefully not overlook! I haven't read Inverted Fate in a couple years, but it's a good example of Undyne's grey characterization as I feel it's totally in-character for her to take such an antagonistic position in that story.
It's pretty frustrating to see when people just... Strip the nuances away from characters... The nuances, to me are what make the characters fascinating in the first place!
Muffet's existence is kinda refreshing, it shows monsters aren't inherently sweet and friendly creatures who wouldn't hurt a fly. Adds variety and the concept itself is pretty funny
I think muffets amorality is sorta what makes her a neat character, she isn’t inherently super evil or a hero either, she’ll just do whatever it takes for them to get what they want and i think this aspect is really what makes her great, her character fits the nature of actual spiders
I'm pretty sure you only get gold if you've donated money to spiderkind. I was thinking of dong another playthrough so maybe I'll check that out along the way.
To quote the Fallen Child: "If you're cuter the fandom won't critizise you as much." Or something like that. Interestingly Muffet is not the only boss who becomes instantly sparable on the No Mercy Route she shares this position with Papyrus and the Mad Dummy (or Glad Dummy in this case).
the genocide dialogue is really obscure compared to the neutral and pacifist speeches, so i can't really blame the fandom for getting a wrong impression. cool analysis video; while i was aware of the dialogue, i didn't notice the implications of that dialogue, like muffet being effectively the reason genocide continued past hotland.
Hey, thanks! I like to take little niche topics like this and discuss them from a characterization standpoint. xD Think it's part of the fancomic/fanfic author side of me. I overthink these things a lot.
I’ve never heard of Muffets genocide dialogue, it’s really interesting! Also about whoever paid muffet to kill you, I think it might be a reference to the fact that Muffet was made by a kickstarter backer who paid to put her in the game. So someone literally paid a lot of money for her to fight you.
In-universe, it was Mettaton. She was one of the mercenaries he hired to kill Frisk. The whole "offering lots of gold", having a "sweet smile" and a "shadow changing shape" thing is really telling.
@@hdmonster3327 to this day i dont know who it exactly is, but i guess "offering gold" could only be mettaton, flowey isnt just gonna offer something like that
I'm glad you highlighted how much care UT has for the monsters, giving them background story's even tho the player wont ever see it. And Muffet is a great example of that, since although she's doesn't have a lot of "lore" for the game, she's still a fun character with more than meets the eye, and even explains some questions about how things happened in case the player is wandering. Basically I like how UT has so much space to analyze characters haha
That's because you'll just reset anyways, why fight on anything other than the genocide route where you have to sell your soul and thus permanently alter the game if you want to continue afterward
Very interesting topic! I've always liked to think of Muffet as a true embodiment of moral neutrality in Undertale as well. We see more and less heroic people throughout the story (i.e. Flowey being a stereotypical villain for most of the game at least, Undyne being portrayed as heroic in her actions, etc.), but none of them seem to share this trait of absolute indifference towards the rest of the underground. The closest I could see is maybe Sans, but even then at extremes he is willing to establish a good aligned moral code for himself to avenge his fallen friends and he has his general moments of moral goodness throughout the game like helping his brother out and checking up on Toriel. The only way we see that Muffet listens to anyone is through gold and her own interests, which is not inherently good or evil. I'm not exactly sure on the money part being neutral entirely, but that might be yet another interesting topic to cover from the perspective of workers like Burgerpants, the Royal Guard, Alphys, or even the Nice Cream guy in Undertale/Deltarune. She's very much akin to a bounty hunter, willing to do the bidding of the highest bidder. She's very similar to Colress from Pokemon if you know who that is. More self-interested than anything, and willing to work with someone to achieve their goals. But they aren't exactly out to get anyone, and the moment their benefits end or something better comes along is the moment they decide to turn tail on their benefactors for better or worse.
Yeah, Muffet feels very orange and blue morality. She cares about spiders, yet will sell goods made from spiders, and doesn't really value the lives of non-spiders. She really is an outlier with how most monsters are depicted, and it's neato.
@@Dorked Yeah, the adventure wouldn't feel THAT dangerous if the only people who really want to kill you were the enemies in CORE, that are mercenaries. We kinda needed an evil boss for Undertale.
@@DeltaBlazin Yeah, which I think makes her a really unique character in the UT cast. In a cast of genuinely kind and friendly characters, we have someone who knows what she's about... spiders, and only spiders. xD
I always knew about some of Muffet's weird actions during Genocide, but since you mentioned the cannibalism on top of that, I realized that Muffet doesn't care about anyone other than herself. It seems she only wants to get the spiders out of the Ruins so she can eat them rather than actually freeing them.
My favorite theory is that the person hired to kill you isn't Flowey of Mettaton, but the KICKSTARTER PATREONS. Think about it, Muffet literally says the person who hired her paid a lot of money, and what did it take to get her into the game? "Changing shape" refers to the fact that it's not just one person, but many acting as one.
Honestly I love how Muffet's immorality/ammorality basically references two things: One: Her being portrayed as stingy and caring only about raising enough money to help the spiders trapped in the ruins, being a reference to how she was bought-in during the kickstarter. Second: Her caring only about spiders (despite the fact she still makes pastries out of spiders) and generally not giving a shit about everyone else, I feel like it's a sort of reverse-arachnophobia Idk I think she's pretty neat
While this video may seem harsh, rest assured that I do think Muffet is neat! I just think it's important to highlight delicious character flaws. The vegetoid fight always made me wonder if monsters are even edible (they turn into dust when they die) but it seems a lot of muffet's dialogues confirms it D: (sorry for the morbid topic, it's just that I'm super interested in the worlbuilding of undertale and I dont know how this could make sense)
@@Dorked I didn't remember that the snails were technically monsters! It's something that I've never seen discussed in our fandom, but I guess it's just that Toby didn't think about the logic of all this too much xD
3:45 Thank you for dedicating part of the video on that. It's so odd to me how some people miss the point so hard that they think Flowey was tho one to hire her. Like, Flowey has literally been following you, waiting for you to clean the way forward so he can get to the human souls. Why would he ever hire someone to mess up with his own plan??? And don't even get me starter on Gaster, you know, the guy who's whole point in the game is that he doesn't exist anymore outside of small fragments; even if that's somehow not enough to stop him from being able to just show up and hire someone to kill you, there is also 0 reasons given as for why he'd be hostile towards the player. I never understood why ppl speculate on who hired her, Metatton mentions he hired mercenaries to kill Frisk, that should be enough to put 2 and 2 together
What I like about Muffet is that out of all the monsters we meet, she is the only one with a truly non-human morality, like you could be the most depraved criminal in history and she would still like you just because you didn't harmed spirders, like she saw a nation wide crisis and the only thing she thinks is to kill and eat the person thats warning her.
Wow I didn't know about that. I think this shows how much of a great character designer the person who made Muffet is. I think that a lot of people would make a nice character that can be appreciated by everyone so that everyone shows appreciation towards their work. I might have done so too back in the day. Nowadays I don't think I would (my character would be nice but would have issues too), but I can understand the appeal. But this person, they made their character a properly written self-centered jerk without exaggerating it like with Berdly (not saying Berdly is poorly written or is a self-centered jerk and nothing more). I'm actually impressed now that I see Muffet's entire character.
I think that was merely a failsafe to prevent the player from getting their geno run aborted no matter what because paying the 9999g donut does avoid her battle on the pacifist/neutral run entirely
man, that's actually a good explanation for who muffet saw "changing shape in the shadows" of course the general undertale fandom back then believed it was gaster lmao
muffets always been aesthetically interesting but i didnt know much about her character before now- thank u for informing me shes way more interesting than i thought she was.
3:44 , while I do think it was Mettaton who canonically hired her, I saw this funny theory that the player/gaster hired her (no, it's not because of the laugh or anything stupid), the reason is that since Muffet is a kickstarter reward, someone LITERALLY payed a bunch of money so Muffet could fight you.
It’s nice seeing this dialogue finally getting some attention, I first discovered this about a year ago and was honestly surprised about how little it was actually talked about
@@Dorked considering Genocide is the route that generally gets the most traction, it’s just generally surprising seeing how so many parts of both the main Genocide run and the Aborted run (Chara’s strange comment on Snowdrake, this, Papyrus saying you’d have got blasted, etc) get as little notice as they do
Chara's comment on Snowdrake is probably not JUST about Snowflake, but about Sans too. Well, the first part of it likely is. And that line about getting blasted that was, by the way, specifically added in a patch after release, is basically confirmation that Papyrus also posesses Gaster Blasters and his special attack would've been them if the Annoying Dog didn't steal it (hm, wonder why the literal author self-insert did that. Probably because that's something he didn't want us to see, eh?).
Yes, thank you! Muffet is messed up, I lost all respect when she was talking about wanting to eat Alphys while Alphys was desperately trying to save her life. I have a worrying head-canon that, even in the best possible pacifist ending, peace between humans and monsters is impossible if Muffet moves to the surface, too. All it would take is one person reacting and squishing a spider in front of her. She'd try to kill that human, and either be killed, causing controversy, or succeed, then absorb that human's soul and probably go on a rampage and get more souls and basically become an evil spider eldritch horror. I've never seen anyone address this problem in any fan works. I even considered making a fan work where all the characters are desperately trying to trick/keep Muffet satisfied underground so this disaster never happens.
that does sound like something to think on, even make a whole fanwork about very interesting..indeed she wouldnt just watch someone squash a spider though, even without muffet being like that its still a fact that peace with humanity is barely possible asriel was absolutely destroyed, and even that aside, im pretty sure humans arent gonna be happy to see the monsters they sealed come back to the surface, and just a child WHO freed them trying to convince humanity itself just wont help
the real question is why the fuck didn’t asgore absorb the human souls during undyne’s fight Like maybe it is guilt or something else similar, but like that would of been your only chance to stop them and he FR just said “Nah fuck that I’ll give them tea”
With all this in mind I find it hilarious that Muffet even showed up in the TP ending before the Asriel fight to (apparently) encourage Frisk, with how little she seems to care about anyone else lol.
honestly think she just came to defend us because we were cool with the spider, or just saw that everone went somewhere and tought it would be nice for the bussiness lol
Muffet always struck me as the spider version of Undyne. Undyne is willing to ruthlessly chase after a human _child_ with spears trying to kill us, even manipulating Papyrus into helping. She does this because she cares about monsterkind and wants to destroy humankind. She justifies this with Monsterkind's long exile from the Surface and the pain and suffering humanity has given monsterkind. Muffet is in a somewhat similar situation, but with an extra perceived enemy: Humankind. She doesn't passionately hate either, but shows a blatant disregard for their lives and safety, willing to bake or kill anyone to free spiderkind (or a part of it) from the Ruins. A difference is that she is also willing to be chill with some humans and monsters, clearly. That is, she simply doesn't trouble herself much over anyone who isn't a spider. Her priority is spiderkind. I always felt horrible for the spiders in the Ruins. While monsterkind grasps for the Surface, these spiders, separated from the other spider Clans, are just trying to make it to a new area of the Underground. Their in a terrible situation. Monsters and humans alike probably constantly squash them. Muffet is default wary of everyone because most people hate spiders. As for the cannibalism--yeah that's messed up. My personal headcanon is that spiders bake their dead so that 'even in death we may all stick together and help one another', and that Muffet is utterly baffled by other funeral cultures. But that's just a personal headcanon with no canon ground. I don't remember if the game says anything about the spiders she bakes. But yeah, she's a VERY fascinating and amoral charater with a passion for helping her kind, plus a willingness for cold-blooded murder. Pretty cool, with a good balance of relatability (that is, wanting to protect loved ones) and some tasty flaws and creepy nuances that keep her one thing: *FRIGHTENING.* Her scary side should *make* us hesitate about killing spiders, remind us that we took a tiny, tiny life, and make us feel _guilty._ And wonder if a certain scary Miss Muffet is going to come and wrap us in her web, letting her pet kill us before baking us into treats. I never knew about this No Mercy dialogue and now I love Muffet even more. Your content is well-polished and really good, keep up the awesome work! I absolutely love the little overlooked parts of Undertale. Great job!
I always saw Muffet as one of those odd loops like Glyde and So Sorry who are pretty barren in comparison to how UT gives depth even to npcs, this video actually makes me like her more now ironically. She's is in fact the oddloop in monster kind, while all monsters are very close to one another and supportive of each other she only sees them as flies in her web she can squeeze out all that's worth of them and then eat them, even to her similar kin (though it could be possible spiders just see this as "that's just the way of things" like many irl spiders). With how the fanbase was so bent on pointing out "the truly evil" is funny the closets character to that was always there.
I only started watching your content a week or two ago, and already i'm hooked. This was once again another great analysis into one of the more underrated characters!
I've seen some cute fanart shipping Muffet with Toriel, which would be kind of hilarious given the former's sheer blue and orange morality that would know doubt freak Toriel out.
Crack ships like that are really funny, tbh. xD I've seen her shipped with a LOT of characters, including Papyrus, Asgore, and Mettaton. Mad Mew Mew, too.
@@DorkedMad Mew Mew actually kinda makes sense now that I think about it, she seems to like strong willed violent women given her crush on Undyne and Muffet could even give her a better vessel due to her exhoberent amount of money
This actually makes me pretty happy that the game does genuinely acknowledgement Muffet's existence, because she really does just feel like her own isolated thing. A separate area, very little reference to her outside her little area, and unless you do these specific things she definitely felt like the least interesting boss(story wise, the mechanic was actually awesome). That and the fact she's a misreable person is probably why she is noticeably absent in a large amount of fan stories. I feel like 'Mr no dialog' Grillby is more common to see than Muffet.
I love that you're bringing attention to this. A couple other notes: 1: She is the only monster that ever wishes harm towards other monsters (Flowey is neither, he doesn't count). 2: I don't think she actually spares you because you didn't hurt spiders. The sudden conversion of attitude, and the joke about attacking Frisk again, seems to imply she's merely doing this to keep up appearances to the other spiders, since that was the excuse she gave for attacking you.
thanks for showing this to the public, i already knew this dialogue but i never really cared if people knew, i only told it about a friend who worships muffet, BOY i wish i could have seen his face when i became the barrel of bad news, to think that your favorite character is the literal cause of the death of so many monsters, nice video btw dorked, take care and keep the good work!
...Well, holy hell. This is certainly something to know about. I genuinely had absolutely NO idea about her genocide dialogue, good *LORD* she's a lot more scary now. Thanks for bringing this up, probably would never have any idea about it if you didn't.
I've had the jist of this speech but I don't think I've ever seen it in full, but it really is funny that Muffet is just- an asshole?? Like literally she's the only boss you don't spare through your own actions, you have to pay her for her to even think about stopping and the only reason she does stop is because the spiders already favor you. Granted, it's because she's been lied to about you hating spiders, but like, she was still gonna eat you. Toby really took a kickstarter character, inserted her into the story with a dubious cause for her fighting (people still can't agree on who hired her and I personally think that's supposed to be a meta joke due to how she was created in the first place- also 3:44 I will fight you on this but either way she's just made out as a mercenary), made her a complete sadistic cannibalistic jerk... and she came out one of the most beloved characters by the fandom lmao.
So you're saying that the reason there are so many monsters that haven't been evacuated yet and Asgore didn't know about us is because while Mettaton was warning the NPCs, Alphys accidentally wasted too much time on Muffet, who bought the human time to kill more than 30 monsters?
I like to believe that spider's cannibalism isn't real and sign "food of spiders" is more metaphorical/with some other meaning. Not only because everything you mentioned about character's softer potrayal (eating your own kind is not kind of thing I would imagine Muffet approve, since she cares only about her family and those who are good with them), but also... that would mean just eating piles of dust. Wouldn't it taste like ash? About the video, though, it's nice you made it, it's one of the most obscure and important lore details at the same time.
I heard an interesting theory that Muffet made a deal with Gaster to get a soul, which is why she stook around, regardless of a literal genocider going around, she just *had* to get it or die, because god knows what the man will do if she fails.
Personally, I just don't buy Gaster being her benefactor. He's shattered across time and space, after all, and is not a character central to UT's plot, whereas Mettaton confirms onscreen that he paid everybody and canonically does change shape. Gaster in UT really just feels like foreshadowing for DR given his lore is so far removed from the main story.
I thought this "why she's popular" thing was going different places based on how we're on Google images, but on a more innocent note her personality is fun in neutral/pacifist and her theme and fight is amazing as well. Never actually saw the dialogue for genocide because I uhhhhh... I start blasting... For the whole run... And I don't stop. So it's interesting seeing more of her character. Out of everyone in the game, who do you feel gets the most misrepresented/gotten wrong by the community? I want to say Asgore, but there are likely some that are moreso.
Aw, thanks a bunch! :) I really think it's fun to delve into these less "mainstream" UT discussion topics like the Undyne one I did a few weeks back. There's a lot to the game that just isn't talked about.
Everything you said in this video is exactly why she is my least favorite character in Undertale. She doesn't care about humans (understandable, but Mettaton at least had that going for him), she doesn't care about her fellow monsters, she doesn't even care about breaking the barrier! Heck, even the people she claims to care for, her fellow spiders, are nothing more than ingredients to her! This is in no disrespect to the people who created her and were lucky enough to have her added in the game. This is just the character I see and the opinion I've come to.
Huh, I didn't even know that dialogue existed. It's still a bit weird to me how much weight people seem to place on Muffet despite her lack of real relevance, and then finding out that this is a thing as well... hm. Great video as always!
I find this analysis very interesting, I didn't ever see the genocide dialogue and it clearly shows a lot more of her real personality than the other routes, anyway great video!
3:17 To be honest I barely see her at all in fancomics or fanfic. If you guys have recommendations then be sure to drop them here. Toby went above and beyond with this kickstarter reward. 3:30 And Spamton is Muffet if her Vriska is swapped with some Handmaiden
i found out a thing i didnt know about muffet lately, if you donate at the 9999 things she has for sale she wont fight u at all, saying after the dialogue before the fight with "i heard..." "but that cant be true right? because you donated so much to us!" i found this out by changing the money value and buying both 9999 stuff, that was funny and unespected
As a fan of Muffet, I do love seeing her show some sort of care for others as I enjoy flipping character roles/traits on their heads for different stories, but I don't want that to mean that the original more crueler depiction is forgotten. Ideally, I'd like to see people's takes on what both would mean for her character. But yeah, her darker sides are often forgotten :c
I think my favorite part about Muffet’s popularity is that she’s a backer character, not even of Toby’s creation. Not saying she’s not spider baker waifu material though 👀
Idk why but I love the fact Toby actually made that 9000 spider donut and cider. An actual scene for muffet, if you buy one or both and head into her area. Instead of just a joke.
Muffet was litterly somehow the only character in video games I had a crush on when I was younger ☠️ and idk why but she’s one of my fav characters in this whole game and I love how evil she is in the game for no reason and I really hope she has some presence in deltarune even if that isn’t likely at all LoL
And now I am imagining an edgy AU where Muffet does get/sell human soul, and all ruinous consequences for monsters and humans alike. Neat video, thanks!
Funny thing: if she really eats people, this means that the royal guard has defnitly at least paid her a visit, so if she is still out of jail (do monsters have jails? I don't remember) this means that they're scared of her
looks like i finally found a piece of undertale info i've yet to know! geez, shows how many possibilities there are in the game, i'd never even THINK of sparing muffet on a no mercy run.
This is a great and insightful video, but watching it just reminded me of a question that's been bothering me for ages. How would one even bake a monster into something?? Do you mix their dust into the batter??? Maybe Muffet has some sort of unexplained, probably gross, spider technique that she uses to transmute the magic that makes up a monster into monster food.
Muffet is a fascinating character because she’s obviously a bad person, but in an entirely selfless way. Everything she does, even in a No Mercy route, it’s for her people (the spiders). She is not kind, or good, and yet still is never selfish. I just think it’s neat! Many people, myself included, struggle to write evil characters without focusing on their selfishness, or to have a selfless character who isn’t a good guy.
i always found muffet to be the hardest boss in neutral-pacifist (flawed pacifist) if you didnt have a spider donut with you, and that's all i really knew about her, wow
I always perceived Muffet as one of the only “evil” characters in the game (though I wouldn’t quite call her evil more just a bad person) and you know what I love her for that
Entering headcanon territory but that makes me think if the area of the upper elevators is actually hers or if she just "took it" and no one is gonna go up there to tell her she can't do that.
I find it interesting how seperate the spider people are from other monsters. Kind of reminds me how real life spiders are different from other types of bugs and operate on a completely different system. Maybe spider culture is completely different from monster culture.
When i first fought Muffet I wondered if monsters eating humans was like, a normal thing in the underground. I was doing a pacifist run during my first playthrough and it made me wary of the other characters after that.
Muffet, a salespider becuz of their on pride and desire allowed many others to die, and she's the one to blame about her on death.... Reminds me of a certain BIG SHOT!
I feel like Muffet fits really well into genocide, as every single character is just like “we have to kill frisk or we all die”, but Muffet is determined to stick to her interests, even if it’s generally worse for monsters altogether. It’s not like Muffet stands a chance in the fight anyways
i really never got it how people used to view muffet as this ''sweetheart tea entusiast'' only, and how most people adored her so much she doesn't even has a justified motive for killing us like other characters. Or any redeeming qualities that would make me like her and not consider her as just a jerk straight up just wants to eat and shame frisk, and eat other's wallet as well. (usually both) killing her wouldn't make me feel bad or guilty at all nice explanation on the thing of who paid her, btw
And in addition to said in the video, Muffet also has a unique soul mode in her fight, which is a trait of important character, and also makes me think... Who would have this mode, and how would it work if Muffet have never existed? Like, she's probably the main reason why it works the way it works, and she also wasn't planned initially, so it's quite interesting to wonder about to be honest.
Muffet is my favorite undertale character she still is bit this has definitely revealed some thngs i didnt see lol but its a cool little touch of lore and stuff
Muffet kind of reminds me of the classical depiction of fairies. Besides having an appropriately whimsical aesthetic for a fairy, she just has this morality that's alien among even the other monsters. Everything she does makes sense to spiders, and is fair to spiders, and she CAN be kind to non-spiders... but you're better off avoiding her and not taking the risk of offending her. Just like fairies.
I’d honestly love if you could get a unique, almost dystopian ending for only sparing Muffet on a No Mercy route.
If you do spare muffet, you get a LV 19 neutral run that's basically a variant on Queen Alphys. ...and by that I mean it's literally just Queen Alphys but Muffet survived. xD

Wait, people change her character?
@@KittyKatty999 They do often portray her with only her more heroic side portrayed in Neutral/Pacifist.
(Blue)
and Mad Mewmew's also there with her Nintendo Switch soul (Blue-Red) that doesn't tie in with a human/soul.
Muffet's also the only mini-boss directly in the path to every ending to do a soul gimmick, the only one to have a whole spider bake sale mechanic, and the first Hotland mini-boss to have a whole sequence leading up to the battle (MTT excluded since he's a boss in my heart)

Yeah, the hidden dialogue is why I always wait to kill her until after she's finished talking.
I think most people are on some level aware.
It's just...most fanart depicts her as a cute anime girl. So...yeah. lol

Yeah, it's really neat, too, because Toby DID not have to go this far or this hard when it comes to Muffet's fight here, and he still did. xD
In her defense, if you spare a single, puny, insignificant Whimpsun in the ruins, Sans also decides to not kill you.
I think he might be aware of what happens to the game if you complete the genocide route, and _that’s_ what motivates him to finally take action.
Fr
She really is an outlier with how most monsters are depicted, and it's neato.
tbf there is the river person who's basically the only character whose dialogue and functionality is completely unaffected by being in a genocide run

I always knew about some of Muffet's weird actions during Genocide, but since you mentioned the cannibalism on top of that, I realized that Muffet doesn't care about anyone other than herself. I think it's her being greedy, a limousine isn't necessary
Also, her spiders like her
My favorite theory is that the person hired to kill you isn't Flowey of Mettaton, but the KICKSTARTER PATREONS. Think about it, Muffet literally says the person who hired her paid a lot of money, and what did it take to get her into the game? "Changing shape" refers to the fact that it's not just one person, but many acting as one.
That's one of the things that make sense both in universe and outside. In universe it is probably Mettaton.
Honestly I love how Muffet's immorality/ammorality basically references two things:
One: Her being portrayed as stingy and caring only about raising enough money to help the spiders trapped in the ruins, being a reference to how she was bought-in during the kickstarter.
Second: Her caring only about spiders (despite the fact she still makes pastries out of spiders) and generally not giving a shit about everyone else, I feel like it's a sort of reverse-arachnophobia

Yeah, Muffet's flaws are more subtle in the normal runs, but this really adds a fascinating layer to her. It's dark, but in a cool way.
@@Dorked Exactly ^^
Eh, at least even if you pay her in genocide she has enough morality to realise you shouldn’t be allowed to live regardless
Is it really morality? Or just pragmatism?
I think that was merely a failsafe to prevent the player from getting their geno run aborted no matter what because paying the 9999g donut does avoid her battle on the pacifist/neutral run entirely
man, that's actually a good explanation for who muffet saw "changing shape in the shadows"

It’s nice seeing this dialogue finally getting some attention, I first discovered this about a year ago and was honestly surprised about how little it was actually talked about
Yeah, I only became aware of it within the last few years, too.
I even considered making a fan work where all the characters are desperately trying to trick/keep Muffet satisfied underground so this disaster never happens.
that does sound like something to think on, even make a whole fanwork about
very interesting..indeed she wouldnt just watch someone squash a spider
though, even without muffet being like that its still a fact that peace with humanity is barely possible
asriel was absolutely destroyed, and even that aside, im pretty sure humans arent gonna be happy to see the monsters they sealed come back to the surface, and just a child WHO freed them trying to convince humanity itself just wont help
the real question is why the fuck didn’t asgore absorb the human souls during undyne’s fight
Like maybe it is guilt or something else similar, but like that would of been your only chance to stop them and he FR just said
“Nah fuck that I’ll give them tea”
Let's be honest, people framing Muffet as soft and kind do so because they're into her
As an 8 years long Undertale fanboy you somehow still manage to suprise me about my favourite game, that's dedication right there
With all this in mind I find it hilarious that Muffet even showed up in the TP ending before the Asriel fight to (apparently) encourage Frisk, with how little she seems to care about anyone else lol.
yes
honestly think she just came to defend us because we were cool with the spider, or just saw that everone went somewhere and tought it would be nice for the bussiness lol
Great job!
Fr
A couple other notes:
1: She is the only monster that ever wishes harm towards other monsters (Flowey is neither, he doesn't count).
2: I don't think she actually spares you because you didn't hurt spiders. The sudden conversion of attitude, and the joke about attacking Frisk again, seems to imply she's merely doing this to keep up appearances to the other spiders, since that was the excuse she gave for attacking you.
Muffet is a good character. Some people forget that monsters can just be cruel, just like how some humans are cruel as well.
thanks for showing this to the public, i already knew this dialogue but i never really cared if people knew, i only told it about a friend who worships muffet, BOY i wish i could have seen his face when i became the barrel of bad news, to think that your favorite character is the literal cause of the death of so many monsters, nice video btw dorked, take care and keep the good work!

Dorky: Talking about a serious and well thought theory while Spider Dance Plays.
Me: 🕺🕺🕺
So you're saying that the reason there are so many monsters that haven't been evacuated yet and Asgore didn't know about us is because while Mettaton was warning the NPCs, Alphys accidentally wasted too much time on Muffet, who bought the human time to kill more than 30 monsters?
I think it's a combo of that and Asgore just... not being reachable by phone at the time.
Muffet does act for the greater good. It's that for her, her own kind is the greatest good. Tribal thinking in action.
I thought it was spider themed food. We eat ginger bread men during the holidays. Is it made of people??
I still remember this being discussed like a day or so in discord lol. Could not believe you actually made the video! You said you wouldn't at first!

@@Dorked It's a rocky theory but pretty interesting imo
The thing is Muffet was only hired to kill Frisk in the Pacifist/Neutral run. She doesn't ever mention being paid in her genocide fight.
Except the one who hired Muffet was Mettaton, not Gaster.
I want to say Asgore, but there are likely some that are moreso.
ye
papyrus, asgore, toriel, alphys and honestly i feel like every single character in this game is flanderised to the extreme
yess i've been waiting to see your take on muffet, i'm glad you made this video as it really makes her character even more interesting !!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed. c:
Love Muffet! Glad you made a video about her! Love your videos so much! You're my new fav undertale/deltarune discussion youtuber! :D
Aw, thanks a bunch! :) I really think it's fun to delve into these less "mainstream" UT discussion topics like the Undyne one I did a few weeks back. There's a lot to the game that just isn't talked about.
@@Dorked Yess I agree! The effort Toby put into this game will never not amaze me.
How would she eat Alphys or the donut guy, wouldn't they turn into dust if she tried.
To be fair, you can ask the same thing about the snails on the snail farm, which... can talk? It's so odd. xD Also vegetoids.
Just mix in the dust like flour or sugar.
Apparently she still fights in the murder run despite that. xD
@@Dorked yes in the enocide she does for obvious reasons XD
I farmed Dog Residue for *so long* to get that dialogue...
@@mistycomet9760 oh no hahahah
As a fan of Muffet, I do love seeing her show some sort of care for others as I enjoy flipping character roles/traits on their heads for different stories, but I don't want that to mean that the original more crueler depiction is forgotten. Ideally, I'd like to see people's takes on what both would mean for her character. But yeah, her darker sides are often forgotten :c
I think my favorite part about Muffet’s popularity is that she’s a backer character, not even of Toby’s creation.
Not saying she’s not spider baker waifu material though 👀
Rest in Peace to all those poor souls who fought Neo BEFORE killing all the Monsters and then saved.
Schaffrillas productions raised a hand while Reading this
Idk why but I love the fact Toby actually made that 9000 spider donut and cider. An actual scene for muffet, if you buy one or both and head into her area. Instead of just a joke.
I'm so stressed bc of finals and was just taking a break from studying. This video came in perfect!
Hope it provides some nice destressing! :)
@@Dorked it does
Yet another amazing character analysis by dorked good job 👍
Muffet: A True Capitalist at heart
Muffet was litterly somehow the only character in video games I had a crush on when I was younger ☠️ and idk why but she’s one of my fav characters in this whole game and I love how evil she is in the game for no reason and I really hope she has some presence in deltarune even if that isn’t likely at all LoL
And now I am imagining an edgy AU where Muffet does get/sell human soul, and all ruinous consequences for monsters and humans alike. Neat video, thanks!
No prob! Happy to provide some fun insight lil' topics like this.
It wouldnt change much, muffet creates something with the human soul and sells it to other people, and the monsters wait until the next human comes.
Yeah, most people don't, which is why I think this is some of the most obscure Undertale dialogue.
The first frames scared me...this is one of my favorite characters tho!~
Muffet is a fascinating character because she’s obviously a bad person, but in an entirely selfless way. Everything she does, even in a No Mercy route, it’s for her people (the spiders). She is not kind, or good, and yet still is never selfish. I just think it’s neat! Many people, myself included, struggle to write evil characters without focusing on their selfishness, or to have a selfless character who isn’t a good guy.
i always found muffet to be the hardest boss in neutral-pacifist (flawed pacifist) if you didnt have a spider donut with you, and that's all i really knew about her, wow
Yeah, Muffet's a challenge! Even when recording for this video, I kinda got tripped up and took a lot of damage. xD;
This video was definitely inspired by that comment in the Livestream
I’ve always thought the implication of the spiders eating each other is that they’re eating the dead spiders
I always perceived Muffet as one of the only “evil” characters in the game (though I wouldn’t quite call her evil more just a bad person) and you know what I love her for that
I just know that this is gonna be a good one :]
It was a fun video to put together. Relatively short, but niche topic that I hope folks will find fun.
This is why Undertale is my favorite game. Sooo much depth despite not having any forced filler.
Cool video good job.
Eyy, thank ye!
blud a time traveler
@@and______ No I just made the comment like 30 seconds after the video was posted
@@potatofarmer9488 thx for clearing that up mate a really thought u were a time traveller
Very cool. Had no idea. Thanks for sharing this with us.
I feel like Muffet fits really well into genocide, as every single character is just like “we have to kill frisk or we all die”, but Muffet is determined to stick to her interests, even if it’s generally worse for monsters altogether. It’s not like Muffet stands a chance in the fight anyways
i'd like to see a video on the chaos king, also very cool video.
i really never got it how people used to view muffet as this ''sweetheart tea entusiast'' only, and how most people adored her so much
she doesn't even has a justified motive for killing us like other characters. Or any redeeming qualities that would make me like her and not consider her as just a jerk
straight up just wants to eat and shame frisk, and eat other's wallet as well. (usually both)
killing her wouldn't make me feel bad or guilty at all
nice explanation on the thing of who paid her, btw
And in addition to said in the video, Muffet also has a unique soul mode in her fight, which is a trait of important character, and also makes me think... Who would have this mode, and how would it work if Muffet have never existed? Like, she's probably the main reason why it works the way it works, and she also wasn't planned initially, so it's quite interesting to wonder about to be honest.
Welp, it had to be done, MUFFET!!!!!
She is an interesting character for sure!
@@Dorked Yep, didn't realise how selfish she really is
Even after many years of knowing Undertale, im still figuring somestuff out!
Alphys' honest reaction to almost getting eaten
Holy Shit MUFFET!?
I felt compelled to make this video when I realized most of the fandom legit has no idea of this dialogue's existence.
I love Muffetttt I actually knew of this dialogue.
Am a hard Muffet Simp
Muffet having dialogue not seen by 99% of players?
Guess she has even more in common with So Sorry than I thought.
Muffet is my favorite undertale character she still is bit this has definitely revealed some thngs i didnt see lol but its a cool little touch of lore and stuff
With this new context on my favorite monster... I gotta say...
I just absolutely love her even more!
Always be suspicious when one group says that they only want peace and love without any nuances.
I always fight muffet on genocide now. Makes it more fun since she’s a cool fight.
