I genuinely love the podcast, but I find that Dan and Anisa sometimes don't give Ian a chance to respond to a question before answering it for him. This is not at all a dig at anyone, just something I've noticed, I think it's just due to Ian being more reserved. As an audio listener, sometimes it makes it hard to keep track of what the topic is. Anisa's distinction between 'Ian' content and 'Idubbbz' content is really on the nose. I personally like both types of content equally, but for different reasons. I can see how long-time 'Idubbbz' fans would be disappointed in the Cold Ones video because they were expecting that energy with "the gang" back together, but their psychotic reaction is, as always, super fucked up and unfair. I loved the Cold Ones vid but I was definitely left wanting a bit more out of Ian, and I definitely think there's a constructive way to voice that. I hate that any time either of them does anything online there's such a vicious response, but I'm glad that they're able to pull something of substance from it. All this does is make me more excited for upcoming content because Ian discovered a better understanding of his portrayal and energy in videos.

I had a friend while I was in college who got asked at a party "How do you feel when a white person uses the n word casually, if they don't mean it in a way thats harmful" and I'll never forget what he said. He said that it doesn't hurt him or offend him, its not that hes overly sensitive and can't understand context. But its never really necessary to say, and whenever anyone goes out of their way to say it that was kind of an ick that immediately made the person seem more gross, annoying and less deserving of any sort of respect. Yes, saying the n-word doesn't inherently make you a terrible person... But it DOES make you way way less charismatic and more asocial to the point people aren't going to want to hang out or associate with you. A good example is when Ian went on the H3 podcast and him using the word before made Ethan feel like he could just say the word flippantly to be cool and funny. But it was just painfully awkward and you could tell Ian was wincing in embarrassment the entire time. Just by saying it, you kind of inherently become way more unlikable.
Yeah, there are a lot of valid reasons why saying it is obviously problematic regardless of the context. But for the sort of people who feel like "well if I'm doing it ironically or in a way that has no connection to that context then whats the problem? Why should we be expected to self-censor if I know I'm not doing it out of hate or that I'm doing it in a way that I feel is justified?" I say-- because it's fucking cringe. And it really doesn't need to be any more complex than that.

    • @ShaiGuyz
      @ShaiGuyz 2 месяца назад

yeah my immediate reaction to that is "oh so you dont mind if someone that doesnt know you well SEES YOU as a racist, huh?" as in it doesnt bother them to be in the same category of a racist for whatever reason so it immediately feels like theyre probably a very flippant and ignorant person.

So back in highschool, I actually did an oral report on Ian's statement "It's all okay, or none of it's okay" and I wanted to make sure that my teacher was okay with it WEEKS in advance (she probably never checked the video I sent her).
I stated at the very beginning I wouldn't hold back any word as we had students of all walks of life in my class, however if ANY person wanted even one censored; they all would. From the n word, to the f slur, and even to the R~mental slur I said them all in the context that, if you found it acceptable for one, why stop at another if your already being rude?
I taught them context behind the history of some words, and the fact that when i was learning the background info, Google was actually bad with providing definitions/origins. The most heinous omission from google was when i looked up what the Asian Z-slur was. I had never heard it until it was said in an idubbbz video and when I looked it up, all it said was "An Asian person - derogatory". It wasnt until I went to Urban dictionary that I was given the history behind it.
I always took the quote as a means of saying "None of this is okay, and until it is finally seen that way, this channel will serve a martyr." A position Ian never put forth himself, just one I artificially imposed upon him.

I would like to say that I enjoyed greatly the return of food reviews. I've also enjoyed the squirrel videos with my fiance and we have enjoyed trying to lure them in with wavy arms ourselves, to no avail.. yet.
I also enjoyed bad unboxing, all of the.. slur type stuff back in the day, and content cop remains some of my most rewatched videos. I still occasionally rewatch them, sometimes out of nostalgia, but almost always out of reflection on how society has changed and and grown. At the time that I enjoyed these videos I was growing up in a "small town" and agreed with what was said, and then I moved on and gained a plethora of friends of all walks of life and I matured and learned that there are words you just shouldn't say, not because you can't or have some abstract moral standing on words just being words.. but because we're mature adults now that aren't all that different and should respect each other. I'm more than excited to see what's to come.

as it pertains to the pendulum swinging convo: tho it makes sense to clear up confusion around whether people should feel bad about watching content cops, if you are a viewer who needs the validation of the content creator saying "it's okay if you liked parts of those videos" you might be a bit insecure.
For me: i was an early teenager when i was watching those content cops, and to this day i could watch the RiceGum one and find enjoyment in it, tho now i would find some distasteful racial humor that was not earned, or some points idubbbz made that I wouldn't agree with now. Am I gonna look back at everything i watched or even did as a kid and say im a bad person for watching/doing that thing? no because you grow into the person you are.
even if what ian said in his initial apology was "i think you're a bad person for liking content cops." which, maybe i have a more perceptible eye to this, maybe not, but i sure didnt get that message; but even if he said that, you gotta have thicker skin than that IMO.
as someone who thought it was extremely admirable to make an apology like that, I don't think you need to apologize for people having their feelings hurt over something you didn't say or direct at anyone.

Agree. I've been watching Ian a long time now, and I literally went through a lot of the same perspective changes as him as I got older, so I can relate a lot to what he's said the last year or two.
Many of his old fans (including the ones who show up to *every video* to say hateful things) don't want to accept that Ian grew up, and a lot of what they thought he was was a character that he no longer stands by anyway.
It's a shame that he didn't have the same level of distance between his persona and his real self, like Joji did. Joji definitely doesn't care for a lot of the content he made when he was younger, and he abandoned it, but people don't hate on him because he discarded the toxic identity and swapped mediums.
Ian is stuck trying to shirk off the persona and fans of his persona on the same platform making similar content, and that's rough.

Complete incels and alt-righters as far as I’m concerned and I think that demographic loved 2016 idubbz. It’s funny because people like Ian and Joji for example are quite clearly not hateful, red-pilled people like Sam Hyde is but apparently the basement dwellers were never able to read between the lines of satire and differentiate the entertainers from the real life weirdos.

I personally am baffled by the response to Ian’s apology (etc.), how people took it so personally. It’s apparent that many many people did take it personally, did take those clips as Ian saying they were *all* bad or that they were *all* basement dwellers. But I feel like anyone who watched the videos in full, considered the context around it, would know that wasn’t true. Yes Ian could have been more clear in the initial apology or on Anthony Padilla’s video. But I feel like the miscommunication was both ways in the sense that out of context clips went viral, and there were already thousands who were biased against Ian bc of their views on onlyfans among other things. There was a point where no matter Ian said, many would take it the wrong way or make something up about it. (The rumors of Anisa forcing Ian to get a v4sec0my, or Anisa forcing Ian not to go to Max’s wedding so she could get a tattoo, as examples).
But I never took it that way. I was both somebody who was bullied by edgy white boys who were inspired by idubbbz, and somebody who halfway enjoyed edgy content for the sake of fitting in as a teenager. I never felt like Ian was attacking me or even the guys that bullied me, because even the guys that bullied me weren’t the type to go up to a stranger and say slurs. Like, there’s levels of edginess. I felt like Ian’s apology was primarily about himself and the behavior he was encouraging. Anyone who was a teenager during the content cop days knows he was an inspiration for teenage boys. But that doesn’t mean each one of his audience members was harming others. And if you weren’t hurting others, I don’t get why you’re taking it so personally.

My hot take is that the people that feel hurt or that they're being labelled as a bad person, in response to Ian's pivot and growth, need to grow up to be honest.
They're being faced with the idea that videos they have fond memories of or that was formative for them had issues or were problematic and that the creator of said content doesn't stand by it anymore, in response they take it as a personal attack and get defensive which in my opinion, and in this context, is childish and insecure. Instead of moving on and changing with the content they are stuck and have to justify their enjoyment of the old videos, which includes undermining the genuine problems and irresponsible behaviour that was normalised. Which to me kind of makes them end up acting as the bad people they're trying to avoid being seen as.

I grew up alongside the content and I'm still loving it.
Just keep making what you feel like and the people will watch. I honestly feel like addressing the "old fans" is just going to hold you guys back from growing as a channel.

They were fans of his, huge fans and I guess that’s why it’s so glaring and shocking to see how much he’s changed and how he’s nothing like the person they loved and fanned over. When people you enjoy change so drastically there’s usually a reason for why and it’s not always a good reason. People seem worried for his mental health and speculate on why his energy is so low and he looks like a shell of his former self. It’s normal for people to have concerns

I think the discussion about the prior content was really well said. I saw Ian’s change was natural, he grew up like most of his watchers. I enjoyed the last video on the main channel, it gave a glimpse into the entertaining “idubbbz” persona of the past. I’m happy Ian is finding himself again in his content.
On another note, this is the first time I tune into the podcast and I have an opinion on Anisa as a person. From what I have seen from other content creators purely, I expected her to be domineering over Ian. This is the furthest thing from the truth. Anisa is his wife and it shows.
Good on ya’ll for becoming adults and thinking about your footprint when it’s all said and done. Cheers!

I usually wouldn't make such a claim but I know that zombified look anywhere, because I've had it.
I don't think he can recover, honestly. If I made an entire platform based on edgy humor, then got depressed and had to take meds that ruined my humor / "grew up" by believing that some jokes are doing actual harm to others / worried about my future career because of my past actions and now I have to make my content safer, I'd be pretty depressed too!

Anisa helped him film his videos at the height of his edginess and popularity, pretty sure she was behind the camera for Tana Mongeau content cop. So to say she came along and forced his personality to be different is fucking moronic. He got older, he’s in his mid 30s now not his 20s, that changes your personality, makes you less brash, more mature. He also never revealed anything about his personal life until a few years ago, which when that happened people thought it was some dramatic change, no, you just didn’t know who he was because he was merely a character in front of a camera, you never knew his beliefs or politics. I don’t think he was ever conservative and if you think he was you’re stupid. He also states in this podcast that he still agrees with many of the beliefs he made in his old content cops, he just didn’t like the style in which he expressed them- so clearly his beliefs haven’t shifted all that much. I also don’t know why you think it is a big deal either. It isn’t at all. He just decided to be less mean, got older and was more revealing about his personality (more authentic). On top of that, meeting the love of your life tends to change who you are? In a healthy relationship you grow and change WITH your partner, you don’t just stay static. But no, let’s assume Anisa is an evil succubus 😈😈😈 because that’s a mature and balanced way of looking at things and definitely not the mindset of a 16 year old incel
