***** About Living Traditions Homestead *****
Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out new videos every week! We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

I got my first chicks late Spring this year, and after filling the small feeders and waterers for a month, I bought the same kit from Amazon to utilize a five gallon bucket to ensure the chickens never ran out of feed or water. I still check both daily, but it's saved me a lot of time and they work great. I put the buckets on three red bricks each. The girls love them and we have a LOT less feed waste!
Pro tip: Go to your local Walmart bakery counter and ask to buy their five gallon buckets with lids from their icing container. They charge $1 each, and it's a relief that I know for sure they're food grade. Good job getting your kite together quickly and operationally sound.
You can get the five gallon buckets at your local bakeries. They throw them away. They get their icing and fillings in them. Walmart bakery has them.
And Sam's club
I was admiring your USA t-shirt and how nice it hung straight down…wow, you have lost weight! Congratulations!
Thanks! Down about 30 lbs.
I used the same kit when I built my feeder last year. I used a 13gal bucket which holds an entire bag of feed. I have 6 chickens and it last a month.
Love it!
I bought this kit a couple years ago. It is awesome, never have had an issue with any of it. So nice! I put mine at the very bottom of the bucket so I have less feed and water waste
Kevin, we use those exact watering and feeding items in 5 gallon buckets now for 4 years and they're still going strong.
Instead of a 5 gallon buckets I bought a square pet food storage container. It has a hinged top that snap locks shut.
Kitty Litter comes in containers like this as well. If you know someone with an indoor cat or you have one, you may be able to get a few.
Awesome idea.... and it shouldn't easily tip over!!!
I have been using a used yellow kitty litter bucket for over two years with nipple style waterers on the sides. It works great, and the yellow bucket keeps the water from turning green.
@@eldenl1 Thats neat, I didnt know yellow inhibited the algae. Good tip!
@@lotus.... I didn't know it either, but in those two years I have had to scrub my traditional white waterers but this one stays pristine.
I'd suggest making a sheet metal cone and inverting it to keep feed flowing to the edgs
What a clever idea!
Here in Texas, Firehouse Subs shops sell their empty 5 gallon pickle buckets, with lid, for $3 each. It looks like the closest Firehouse to you is in Springfield. If you call before going, they'll probably tell you if they have any buckets available. It's a great way to get food grade buckets and lids for a low price and keeps them out of the landfill. I typically dump some coffee grounds in the bucket and let them absorb the pickle odor for a while. For feed buckets, I'd rinse them thoroughly, then leave them in the sun for a day or two to dry before putting feed in them.
I made up a few feed buckets using empty cat litter buckets. My son 3D printed the access tubes for pennies. They aren't as fancy as the store bought, but they work great and the chickens haven't complained.😊
I know I’ve mentioned this to you in the past Kevin. But I know if you do it just one time you’ll never do it any other way.
When you’re using your holesaw slightly drill forward until the drillbit enters the plastic. Then turn your drill on reverse and push forward with the holesaw. It will cut/melt so smoothly that it will be a perfect finish and it will not snag. Just try it once Kevin… You will never go back.
We have 12 chickens and have two feeder buckets with these fittings for their feed. We ultimately decided to discontinue this type of feeding system because they make too much of a mess with it. Too much feed is spilled on the ground which would get moldy and soggy when it rained. We were going through a 50 lb bag every two weeks or so. We went back to feeding a scoop every day in two of Tractor Supply’s rubber feeding pans. They eat what is there and go forage for the rest of their diet. Food lasts a lot longer.
Same experience.
Great ideas, I will use these for my chickens, I have come to realize prices arent like the 80's and 90's era anymore. I make more money now then then, prices will hike and although I wish I can spend the 1980-90 prioes with the income I get now (not much by the way) I am willing to go with the flow because I need and wont go without. God Bless
I use gamma lids on mine!
I used these in the past. My chickens still raked out the food on the ground. I liked the concept though. Thanks for the video. God bless!
Thank you so much for sharing your information 😊 love and God bless you kevin 🙏
Very good. Thank you Brother Kevin. Prayers. God Bless you all in Love. Maranatha ! ( shared to f/b )
FYIYou might be able to ask at the Bakery and get the buckets with a lid even cheaper. Here I can get 3+ for what you got 1 .
Maria, that was beautiful. Prayers for Ralph Doss 🙏🏻 open heart surgery 🙏🏻 God bless you all and many prayers 🙏🏻 Nurse Judi in Scottsdale AZ and Eucharistic Minister 🙏🏻
We have these for our chickens. The feeders they still dig all feed out to the ground . The watering part is good over all. I put gamma seal lids for ease to open them which works great for us.
I have been down that road. The feeders work good but the waterers hang up or stick preventing fill up. Drip waterers work better fore.
Morning yall
In this heat use one of the rubber tubs filled with water for birds as they will stand in or even lay in them to wet themselves to cool down. You can also use those single water misters if you have a water line nearby.
We have a water bucket, but also put a rubber tub in this heat. They do stand in it on really hot days. A really great idea!
I got some waterers like you showed on your video about a year ago. Some of them were leaking. I replaced the washers with a different kind of washer of similar size. That has eliminated the leaking. Also, I put 3 waterers on one half of my bucket so when I carry the bucket after filling it, the waterers do not bump against my leg and break.
I enjoy your videos and have learned a lot from them. Keep up the good work!
You could always raise the buckets when the poultry grows
I bought this a couple of years ago. All is doing fine.
Kevin thank you for the demonstration. It looks like those will work well.
Great info. God Bless You and Sarah.
Good morning!
We got the feeder/waterer hardware from Amazon today - already had most of the buckets we needed for our 60ish chickens. Installed and put in place, and they are already using them!!! Thanx!!!
Great video! Thank you for all of the tips and information! Blessings Kiddo!🌻🐛🌿💚🙏💕
These are great feeders. 👍
Great job Kevin. Thanks for the info to make our lives easier.
I was wanting to do this, now you’re giving me the push to get it done!
Looks easy enough, I hope it’s as easy for me, as it looked for you!
Thank you so much for this video!
I've used this system for 2 years now.....LOVE it!!!
I wish you success with the new equipment. Be well all.
I enjoyed watching you put them together. It'll be good to see how they work!! 💕
We have water cups that look like that and have used them for several years. We are in zone 5 so we pull them in and swap what we use for water in the winter. The only "maintenance" we have for these cups is cleaning out the algae that builds up in the little tunnel that leads from the bucket to the cup. A straw brush or pipe cleaner works fine.
i get my buckets from a fast food restaurant that had pickles in them. firehouse subs sell them for $2, most others are free
I have been using both the feeder & the waterer for 2 years and absolutely love them. I don’t use The waterer in winter as the water freezes but that happens to any water. Great value.
I like that set up thanks for showing how easy it is 👍👍😊
Another masterclass from Kevin. Thank you!
PVC = BPA, glad you found another product, ty for sharing! See you next year!
Last year I bought a kit for chicken feed and for water. This year I did make a garbage can feeder since we had someone watching our farm for a couple of days. Mine have held up. I put the garbage can in a kiddy pool to catch the grain.
I used these for a while but changed to a tote that holds 100# of feed , and a freeze free waterer
We use a similar feeder for our chickens. The feeder holes need to be hanging just at the birds head height when standing. If the feeder holes are too low mine won't eat out of them. We have ours hanging from a large chain that is adjustable if needed.
Nice find Kevin! They look great! Hope they all learn to love them! Will you need to stick the turkeys heads in the feeder, and waterer to teach them? I would try😂
I put my feeders on milk crates to raise them up off ground.
Thanks Kevin very informative and helpful video.
❤❤❤ I used the same kit when I built my feeder last year. Thks
We got the nipple type water things for our chickens and it works out great. They seem to be pretty sturdy. They haven't been through a winter though and I wonder if they might freeze here in Northwest Arkansas, so we will keep a close eye on that. So far so good.
I made my own several years ago really saved money in wasted feed! Fixed one up for my son in Mississippi for his 40+ chickens from a tote..that has really saved him $$in wasted feed. Now they make them to buy, rather nice I guess, mine are from PVC. My waterers are from horizontal nipples (don’t leak) and a 5 gal bucket also saved water and is always clean
Of course my ducks cannot use the waterers as they need to scoop the water, works for chickens well ☺️
Love this system. I hang mine and it works great. Only use the feeders though. I use an automatic waterer (if you have a water source) for livestock and that works great for me. One with a plug in the bottom for easy cleaning.
We made that waterer for our chickens and have had it for about 3 years and it's fine. We made that feeder too but the sparrows and squirrels were gobbling up the food instead of the chickens. I switched to the Grandpa feeder. It's expensive but the birds and squirrels stay out of it.
Thanks for doing this. I am also very interested in affordable, NON PLASTIC alternatives to anything homestead related.
Good afternoon! Been a while since I watched your videos. Been crazy busy... canning season, building our home from scratch ourselves, with a baby😂. Love your videos!
Wow! That does sound busy. Hope it’s all going well.
@LivingTraditionsHomestead ❤️ All is well. ☺️Enjoying every minute.... Homestead is one of those thing either you like it or you don't. It's become my hobby❤️
I have both and I take the water cups off each spring and clean and reattach them, I am on my 3rd year and they are still going strong..
I used the same water cups but put them on a 55 gallon food grade barrel. Fill it up about every 3 months.
Love and God Bless 🤗💖🙏
We have that water set up. We even have it about the same height as yours. Works pretty well. The only set back is that the chickens scratch and throw dirt, filling the cups. They get weighed down with dirt, and don't refill. I have to take it to the hose and hose the dirt from the cups, and the next day, the same thing. I only have 5 chickens, curious to see how well it works for your larger flock.
Thank you for the idea and info.. can't wait to get chickens and try this out!!
If you run the large hole saw in reverse there is almost no chance of cracking the bucket and less chance you will have to de-bur the edges.
Good information. Thanks for the video.
I bought these and switched to a galvanized shallow dish. I had a problem keeping the watering bowls from getting green with algae and poo, if you have any tips for slowing the growth of algae I use ACV in their water yet everyday. Another tip the feeders will get water in them and mold so make sure it’s protected from rain and blowing rain. Other than that I really like the ideal of these feeders.
I should not say this but I thought the grain feeder should have had the peak on the bottom not on the top like a visor. It would be a place for the grain to ease out. However if these are for outdoors The lip on top could help keep the grain dry.
Good Morning!!
Those work really well on a 55 gallon barrel
We’ve used those exact ones for 3 years now and they are cheap and work really good!! 100 percent worth it!
I remember ur waterers from way back with the Rubbermaid type dish. Worked great. These will b a good try
The waterers were a nightmare for me. Always leaking. Hopefully you can get them to work for you
Another Great video !!! Thanks !!! XxooOO
This was an awesome idea!!
I hope your waters do better than the ones I had last year . My chickens would turn them on the sides and there would go the water.
Great job think it will work.
My chickens were dragging all their feed onto the ground from their typical 7# round feeder from TSC. I bought the pack of 6 feeders from Amazon, like you shown here. My hubby installed all 6 on a large plastic bin, 2 on each side, 1 at each end. It worked soooo good for nearly a year. Then they started raking the feed pellets out of the holes on the ground. I'm talking 5# + on the ground every single day!!! I never seen so much food on the ground. I plugged most of the holes to force them to eat off the ground. As soon as I unplugged the holes, they went back to emptying the bin on the ground. I wish I had taken a picture, it was so bad. My hubby took the red plastic inserts and cut 1/2 of the middle out so the bottom on the insert made like a wall so they couldn't rake out the food. It's hard to explain, but IT'S WORKING!!! Wish I could post a picture on here what he did. What you're doing here works and is awesome. But my chickens got bratty and figured a way around it. I still swear by these no waste feeders! Is there any way to send you a picture of what he did?
What red insert did he cut?
Love the feeders you’re golng to waste lest feed
We've been using the exact same set for the last few months. The feeder has been GREAT! The little cups on the water has came off a couple times, but we've been able to snap them back on.
Thx
It’s hot and humid everywhere.
I just fed/watered Chickens. I use my Dad's old Podiatry Stainless steel surgery pan!
Your shirt is brilliant! Thank you!
We have used these for a year now, love them, feeder and waterer!
I got these from Amazon awhile ago and they work great. I figured the tools were worth the price of the kit. I did find that the waters didn't work well for the turkeys. They managed to break the cup off, but they work well for the chickens.
I switched my water out for those cups on 2 gallon buckets. Theyre ok but some of them have stopped working and the chickens can move them so sometimes they get turned crooked and empty the bucket
I tried these as well, my chicks had them almost empty within 2 days, had to modify it a bit to fix that issue but they do/can work
I only have 5 hens & some robber squirrels. If i had lots more you bet this would be very helpful! I enjoy going out each day, letting them out of the coop. They associate me with food which makes them friendly too.❤ yall take care!
Waiting to see how they like these new items.
It’s been about a week and so far they are working out great!
We use these feed and waterers. We are very satisfied! We ordered the least expensive set/sets as well.
KC farms have been using those feeders for awhile.
Great idea. May give it a try
Went to that feeder for my chickens. Less mess, less work. Great idea. Worth it!
Thank you for showing us this. I’ll help me in the future when I get chickens and things. Also, you can get buckets at the bakery at Walmart for like a dollar icing buckets. And some grocery stores have them in the bakery. They just throw them away. Blessings.
Tip... when using the caps for the feeder, make some kind of "pull" through the top of the cap. We simply used a zip tie. They become hard to get in and out quickly.
Thanks for sharing with us Kevin, I think those feeders and watering buckets will work out . Might have to change in the winter time though. Stay safe and keep up the great videos. Fred.
I hang these in the chicken tractors, or set them on empty 2 gallon buckets for the free-rangers. We use gamma lids with them. Never have used the little plugs that come with them.
Thanks for the information! Also the great advice to let the tools do the work. Sometimes I have to remember that someone who knows more about these things than I do designed them 😊
So true!
We made the same feeder and waterer except we used empty plastic cat litter containers (they are made with food safe plastic and I washed them.) The feeder is over a year old and works great. The waterer worked fine until the chickens knocked it over and that broke the cups. Of course we had to replace the waterer with a heated one for winter. I think the feeder is worth the money. I have very, very little feed waste.
Watching your video. Just wanted to make a suggestion for waterers. You can make chicken waterers with ripples that screw into a bucket on the bottom, hang the bucket and you always have clean water. I have also seen them used in pvc pipe for chickens, not sure if they would work for ducks.
👍great video
My Bresse Roosters have larger combs, and I find that some of them actually are timid on eating out of the bucket. A few of them have knicked their comb a little and I'm sure you know how they bleed! So they just pick up any food that has spilled out from the Hens pulling the food out! They work great, and I have been using them for years! I did buy mine through a local company, so they are super tough!! Wish I had the caps to cover the food at night though! I also found that its difficult with the waterers when there is freezing weather, they do tend to freeze. I am hoping someone here has a remedy for this!
Thank you for sharing the video very good idea.
Hope they work well for you. Will be watching.
