  • The layout of Folly Lane Station, a Beckenham and West Wickham MRC layout, at Alton Model Railway Exhibition 2024. Apologies for blurriness at times, I found out that it is quite difficult to avoid blur when filming Model trains.
Folly Lane has a British Railways aesthetic, featuring Network South East, Essex Express, and Intercity, just to name a few. I also noticed a Southern slam door and a class 66, so it included some elements of the 21st century. There was also an IC125 HST and a class 442 running, however I didn't manage to film them in action in this video. They were instead in the background of my video on the Dutch layout.
The layout was detailed, which besides the trains also featured a Stagecoach and London & Country bus outside the station, a brilliantly detailed modern housing estate, a working level crossing (which was a bit faulty while I was filming this), and 'Frog Lane' xd 🤣
I preferred this year's exhibition to the last one. It featured some spectacular layouts and more of a range of modern trains.

I worked as a driver on the souless 400 series juicers. Amazing how layouts remember those days... BR blue of course, not NSE.

You were never a "Train Driver" because "BR Drivers" never referred to any EMU as "400 series".
In BR days it took a minimum 5 years as a Secondman before you could even apply for a Drivers position.
Since BR's demise Train Drivers get taught no more than 10% of what BR Drivers had to learn. Indeed the insane & highly dangerous American style Franchise methods now ensure that "Drivers" only get to learn how to operate the driving controls. Because the "Driver" works for a "Train Operating Franchise" Not the "Train owning Franchise" which refuses to allow Drivers to touch any other equipment.
Further BR had 93,000 staff in its last full year to operate the whole network, all the engineering & even train construction. Two years after BR's demise there were over 400,000 staff doing only 80% of what BR did ! Exactly as the Civil Servants had planned. That was to turn BR into a job creation scheme. A year ago there were over 500,000 staff. And that's the main reason why Ticket prices in Britain are now virtually the highest in the World.
I and a lot of senior BR staff, quickly left Britain after the absurd & dangerous "Franchise" nonsense began. Many of us got better paid Jobs with proper Railway Companies around the World. That's Railway Companies who were eager to grab highly qualified BR staff, because for example it took at least 15 years on the Railway to become an Area Manager. As such a grade had to be capable of doing every job from a lowly Porter to a Signalman. Today's "Area Managers" only know how to supervise the platform staff on maybe half a dozen stations & aren't even qualified to be "on or about the track" !!!!
