That drill bit is called a Step Bit or Uni-bit. To anyone please follow the garage door safety instruction and put the steel braided cable through the inside of the spring! It contains all the pieces of coil when the spring breaks. There will be extra cable when the gate is up, but this is why the lift manufacturers use the tube to contain the spring.
Spend $110 and get the Amazon trailer gate lift system. The cost to put dental implants in after that spring breaks and catches you or someone near y in the face……. There’s a reason the springs are enclosed in a housing.
Scott.. those springs came with an internal cable to protect you and others from getting hit when they break, and they will break. Do yourself and others a favor and find a way to restore that spring catch.. I can see why you removed them, but I'm sure you can engineer a way to put them back. The spring will break at one of the end loops while it's extended, you might be near it, your grandkid might, your clients kid might.. please protect yourself, and others.
Scott..wish I'd know about this years ago. I loaned my trailer to a friend who lost my expanded metal tailgate I had built so i had to go back to the original gate which weighs aver 300 lbs. It was designed so we could run a small skidsteer up in the trailer. I get the ramp down to my chest and then I just have to drop it. I'll be heading to my local home improvement store to get these springs and parts.. Thanks for the great video
How do you lose a gate? If It came off while driving don't tell me.....I rida a motorcycle almost everyday and if that's what happened I don't want to know....LOL
I had one of those springs break a 2x12 joist when it finally let go. I'm certain that it would remove the body part it hit when those springs finally break without warning. It was just a 100 lb spring.
Looks good. I will be installing mine today. I also seen the same videos that you watched before and I picked up a few good ideas. I like yours but the thing I would do differently is, installing the eye bolts on an upright position, to avoid loosing width of trailer and to keep them out of the way while loading and unloading, other thing I would do differently is, also installing eye bolts onto the tailgate frame instead of directly on the metal screens because the screen will bend with use. Just my thoughts. Thank you for a great video upload.
Scott.. I just bought the 150 lb springs and eye bolts I don't have expanded steel on my gate. My tailgate is 77 wx52 l Weighs about 300 lbs How far from the top of your gate and to the rails on tour trailer did you measure to mount the springs??
Hi there Scott. I have a question . Did you hook. The Spring to the mash ?. With the quick links.? Because I heard that they come apart.. I'm thinking about the guy. 577 Jersey. He has 2 Springs on one side.. What do you think about that
I used this on my Enclosed Tralier except I had to use 90 lb springs Maybe because my trailer has a Plywood Gate And Maybe a little bit lighter....I had originally Bought 140 lb Springs But I Couldn't even open the thing...Much Better than The Cable & Drums.
Any danger of it coming loose and hitting you? I am always afraid of that since it could cause serious damage if it were to hit you in the eye or something
They don't have nearly the tension on them that the garage doors put on them and they are rated to stretch 10,000 times before replacing them so I'm not really to worried
Hi,after using this for a year is there any problems ? Anything you would do different ? does it weaken the trailer to drill a 3/8 inch hole in it ? I have a 6.4x12 Dovetail Trailer with a 3 foot gate and I am disabled with spinal stenosis and it is all and I mean all I can do to raise the Loading gate. Thanks
Hi thank you for sharing , I really like the idea , I have a one question. Did you try lifting your gate with only one spring attached before installing both springs?
Check out yt videos of Car leaf spring tailgate lift assist. Used on USA u haul motorbike trailers. Simple Have one I made on my Aussie golf buggy trailer. No parts at top all underneath.
U are doing your ass backward : need put eye bolt on the outside the rail under neath angle iron / also u need eyebolt 12 " from top of the gate down on the outside of your gate to with eye bolts ! . need to be firm tie spring ?. my gate weight 292 lbs i can use one hand to lift or one hand pull gate down / i use 2 - 150 lbs spring
@@jaime199 in all onisty. i would not have them on my gate. I am a Hanger and rool door and electric gate mechanic sence 1996 and i don't not recommend installing a spring on a gate such as this. I work with springs as big as 14 inch round and 6 feet long. They are very dangerous and can kill our do permanent bodily harm. They sell them where they are held inside of square tubeing.
I agree with that. It could have a stronger periometer box frame instead of "L" s. Probably built that way because a more sturdioer gate would be 2x heavier.

Good for you. Great savings on that project going the DIY route.

The eye bolt rating is for vertical pull. When you pull form the side, the rating goes out the window. Very nice and informative video. Thanks
What are those springs made for? I suggest running a light steel cable inside those springs incase one of them breaks and lets a piece fly at you!
Thank you.great video
Can you install an eye ball on gate frame..istead shackels ?

Just an update. Everything I did in the video is the same. No changes and they still work perfect. Thanks for the great comments
How did your install go
I'm going to do the same thing but I will be using 4 quick links and no shackles
How did that work out?
Why the shackles on the mesh instead of another eye bolt & quick link?
Scott..
I just bought the 150 lb springs and eye bolts
I don't have expanded steel on my gate.
My tailgate is 77 wx52 l
Weighs about 300 lbs
How far from the top of your gate and to the rails on tour trailer did you measure to mount the springs??
Set mine up Monday didn't use the screw on link's just bent eye bolt and bent back

if u don't put outside your mower equipment will hang a tires or hurt u ?
I would add a safety cable through the spring in case your spring should brake, just saying
Wow man that gate is unnecessary heavy. Be careful when those springs break

Hi thank you for sharing , I really like the idea , I have a one question. Did you try lifting your gate with only one spring attached before installing both springs?
Not intentionally. Before I hooked the second spring up I pulled to adjust something on the gate and it just twisted the gate.

Thank you
Bro you just save my trailer I was going to sell it 😢 only for that heavy door
You do know they use the tubes to protect you from being hit when the spring breaks.
Step bit
How long are your springs

So dangerous. Put a cable through the inside of spring. Incase the spring snaps.
How tight do cables have to be and when you raise gate cable get stuck in springs? Cable get tighten when gate is up correct? Thanks

That tail gate should not be flexing that bad, it's very badly made
