My husband would spend HOURS there and come home with some obscure movie that no one had ever heard of (for good reason) and we’d give up on watching it partway through. That's so sad. I think I still have my old Blockbuster card from here in Canada. I think we are way too reliant on the internet and someday we will be sorry for that. I still own, and prefer VHS tapes.

    • @TurboThunda
      @TurboThunda 4 года назад

      It's called your own nostalgia. The internet is the future whether you like it or not. It has done way more good for us than bad.

      @@TurboThunda For some people not so much. lots of people have bad internet and no other options due to area monopoly. Those who have to deal with buffering likely had a way better time with blockbuster despite its poor business practices.

    • @chetyllynnverellen1365
      @chetyllynnverellen1365 3 года назад +3

      There is nothing good about the future. All technological advances moves toward is making humans superfluous. Human spirit and camaraderie lost to endless leisure, Tiger King and Chinese nick nacks delivered by Amazon. When I imagine 100 years from now, glad I won't be around to see it.
      And this is, of course, the impossible best case scenario.
      At least I remember life having purpose

    • @NeilRoy
      @NeilRoy 3 года назад +1

      @@chetyllynnverellen1365 Agreed. Only, I firmly believe that 100 years from now this will be an entirely different planet with technology done away with. But that's another topic.

    • @NeilRoy
      @NeilRoy 3 года назад +1

      @@TurboThunda No, it's not nostalgia as I still own VHS tapes, I also own a DVD player and I build and program my own computers, I have created a video game downloaded by millions, so I know what I am talking about when it comes to technology. We used to get out and meet with friends and family far more than we do these days. And I prefer VHS not for nostalgic reasons, but because I have 100% control on when I can watch it and how, and I am not forced to watch commercials at the start of it. I am also not reliant on an internet connection to watch my movies. The only connection to the outside world I need is electricity and I have nobody out there telling me what I can and cannot watch and nobody monitoring my activities.
      Now I will agree that the internet has brought us a world of knowledge which can be good, but it has also brought us a world of lies and deception and caused all sorts of foolish ideas to spread like wildfire with toxic people who hide their real name so they can attack others in comments where they would never do that face to face.

Like most things from video stores, to local banks, to even your favourite stores like toysRus, the online experience has killed most social sharing experiences we all loved and shared. And nobody stops to think about the people who are not on Internet, that depend on these place as a lifestyle choice and a life line. We all like to play around on net, but it isn't a social life, it' locks people away from the enjoyment of getting out and about like we use to, and intern it kept people in work, not to employ a computer or machine to do it. Thanks for making this. It’s funny how many of us didn’t realize Blockbuster was fading away until one day driving past it, and seeing the darkened store. I can’t remember the last time I went there, but I miss the excitement of going with my girlfriend and hurrying to the newest release shelves hoping that movie was there. I miss the smell of the candy displays and seeing families picking out videos on the way to get take-out pizza. I even miss the obnoxious person talking on the cell phone over my shoulder while I browsed the shelves.

    I worked at a Blockbuster in the UK, I still miss it. I loved the store even before I worked there, every day I walk past where it used to be and I always feel sad that it's gone.

    I like the fact that looks like a vibrant place to be. The last local blockbuster here in my town had a very sad atmosphere when they were selling everything out before closing. The employees were there just talking each other because, obviously, the didn't care attending clients. And a couple weeks after my last visit the BB closed :( . Now is a KFC.

    Before you get to nostalgic about Blockbuster Video , allow me to give you a little history lesson. Back in the mid-1980s independent video stores started showing up, I'd say around 1984. They started to pick up steam as more and more people got home VCRs. In 1987, they really peaked. So much so, that the indoor theater chains and drive-in theaters really started to have financial problems because of it. People were staying home and watching movies and not going out to see a new movie. At any rate, in the 1990s we started seeing more and more Blockbuster videos stores and the independent video stores began closing up at a pretty incredible rate. Once Blockbuster Video became a monopoly, and that's essentially what they were, they turned into the biggest bunch of assholes you ever saw. They would charge you for an extra day if it was 2 minutes after midnight or even if it wasn't. They had all kinds of silly fees, etc. It got so bad, that many people stopped renting videos altogether and just started buying them out right instead of having to deal with these people. I do not feel sorry for them at all. What goes around comes around and Blockbuster Video got exactly what it deserved, bankruptcy. Goodbye and good riddance.

      I have no nostalgia for Blockbuster either.
      I no longer had any reason to rent from them, once used movies could be bought outright for the same price or slightly more elsewhere.

    The BB in Erie, PA was outside in the Mall Concourse area. I remember climbing endless concrete stairs with a railing, to get to the front door. Having CP as I do, it was not fun. So while I miss the store, I don't miss the climb. It was a fun place to go. You could also order and buy movies / TV shows there. I got some of my Dark Shadows tapes back in the day from them.

    I live in Western Australia and went to the last blockbuster in Australia which wasnt to far from where i lived. When they announced they were closing i went and purchased blockbuster assets such as the massive signs you would see on top of the DVD stands and a few other little nic naks. Glad one is still around.

    So, I've been following your channel since before you publicly showed your Subscriber count, and I LOVE this video!
    I worked for the "Big 3" in my youth. Movie Gallery (VHS), then Hollywood Video (VHS), then Blockbuster (VHS/DVD transition). This brings back a lot of memories. And back then, to be honest, Viacom Video (ahem, sorry, BLOCKBUSTER Video) was my least favorite, very corporate, but at this stage in my life this brings back tremendous nostalgia and there were certainly a lot of positives to be taken from working there. Warms my heart to see one still in operation and I hope that continues for quite some time.
    While digital media has generally spelled the end of the video store and offers myriad benefits over the "old way", there is still something to be said about the experience of perusing the aisles at a video store, holding physical copies in hand. Can you believe Blockbuster passed up the chance to buy Netflix for chump change a number of years ago???!!!
    From what I understand, there is still one rental chain that is doing quite well: Family Video. Kudos to them. They're smart business people, particularly from a real-estate standpoint, in that they understood it would be best to OWN their store's properties instead of being caught in a crippling lease. It has paid dividends for them.

    I use to love that store back in the day. Sometimes I miss it. When all of those stores closed they should have donated all of those movies or sold them or given them away. Rest In Peace Blockbuster.
