Rush Clockwork Angels: The most beautiful, powerful and dignified farewell album in history. Goodbye with a bang. Rush forever.
David Bowie " Blackstar" is also an awesome, haunting masterpiece.
Ehh in my opinion was a let down, just hear me out! The only good song on it was the title track and maybe alchemist, I mean after hearing the last album I was hoping for a Big Bang to go out but not really. :(
WORD!
Rush - Clockwork Angels
David Bowie - Blackstar
Death - The Sound of Perseverance
Gordian Knot - Emergent
Edge of Sanity - Crimson II
Honorable Mentions: Planet X - Quantum (still holding out hope for a new album). Luis, I was at the Jaxx show in Springfield, VA, as well. Awesome performance.
Ark - Burn the Sun - Great choice George. I was also at the PPUSA show. So good.
What a great album is Burn the Sun
Wasn't expecting Japan!
Weird choice, respect! Despite the makeup they were new wavey but also avant garde. Mick karn was a truly unique bassist
Clockwork Angels is the absolute best swan song in music history, IMO.
Another I would add is "Heavenly Ecstasy" from Pagan's Mind. Jorn Viggo Lofstad says there will be one more album, but they have been saying that for over five years....and it has been ten years since Heavenly Ecstasy came out.
Welcome to the "A" team. My fave on SOT
Yeah! They’re mine too.
Jimi Hendrix-Electric Ladyland
David Bowie-Blackstar
Nick Drake-Pink Moon
Death-The Sound of Perseverance
Bolt Thrower-Those Once Loyal
Rush-Clockwork Angels
Good choices, with you on Pink moon, all 3 albums by Nick drake are masterful. Great talent. Tho its not Prog.
1- A Triggering Myth : The Remedy of Abstraction
2- The Underground Railroad : The Origin of Consiousness
3- Henry Cow : Western Culture
4- Egg : The Civil Surface
5- Hatfield and the North : Rotters Club
I am in the Prog bed. Let’s go!
You were missed. I always enjoy watching you on the shows. Your enthusiasm for Prog is infectious.
UKdreamer: thanks but I wasn’t scheduled for tonight.
Rush -Clockwork Angels
David Bowie - Blackstar
Death - Sound of Perseverance
police - Synchronicity
Hendrix - Electric Ladyland
Nick Drake - pink moon
Clockwork angels was kinda a let down to be honest, they truly lost there prog taste from the last album, and the only good song being he title track. ( caravan is ok as well )
@@ratio567 rush have never been a pure prog band and the last album Snakes wasn’t nearly as proggy as songs like CWA and The Garden but hey we all hear things differently and no way ws CWA a let down
@@GMHG777 and I never said they where, they just strayed even further, snakes had some and more prog than clockwork
Thank you Pete, Chuck, George and Luis for your excellent Prog final album choices and for posting them. I need to check them out soon. imho Final Cut was the last best Pink Floyd album. btw: I listened to the Iceberg album this morning and it was fantastic! ... Thank you for the recommendation George.
Love it when Chuck is on, he always mentions favorites of mine. Tin Drum and Clockwork Angels are killer goodbye albums.
That Ark album is an all time favorite of mine. So glad to see you mention it George!
Trigonometric flight to the sun!!
Late to comment again but finally watched the show. Thanks to Luis, George and Chuck for making all these recommendations. As usual with this show, now some albums to go track down for listening so thanks, Pete, for being sure the lists get posted for us to use. With the exception of the new Forgotten Favorites daily show that Pete is doing for August, this program is generally where I find new listens to find and hear regularly. Thanks, gents.
I was a softie, couldn't stay up
George....Planet X, love it, saw Spaced Out at NEARfest, but never picked anything up from them. Shawn Lane....wow
Charles - I love "A Nod and a Wink", great album. I thought I was the only one that liked Civilian...
Pete..,.Max Webster!!!
My picks
1. Jellyfish - Spilt Milk
2. Led Zeppelin - In Through The Out Door (I don't count CODA)
3. Camel - A Nod and a Wink
4. Happy The Man - The Muse Awakens
5. Dixie Dregs - Full Circle
George Lamie the legend strikes again. Love the recommendation for Planet X, one of my fave bands. "Quantum" is massive. Also his HM for Shaun Lane. George, always full of surprises.
Brother George often brings the goods for every show.
@@chuckazeee love you too on the show as well Chuck. Such a repaw between the contributors.
Rush - Clockwork Angels
Touchstone - Oceans of Time
Pink Floyd - The Endless River
Shadow Gallery - Digital Ghosts
Porcupine Tree - The Incident
A great session. Thanks, guys. I've written most of the albums' names down and intend trying to find a way to listen to them as most of them were entirely new to me.
The Eddie Jobson bit was priceless. “I’m thirsty!” 😂
Awesome
5.Moth Vellum
4.Hatfield and the North-The Rotters Club
3. Bruford-Gradually Going Tornado
2.Eddie Jobson/Zinc-The Green Album
1.Refugee
Refugee is a great album but those vocals...my god!!!! lol
@@arnaudb.7669 Have you heard the Nice catalog? I felt like you do back in 1974. I learned that if I sing along with Lee Jackson he’s still better than me.
@@shyshift you're too modest LOL
This is out in left field, but Traffic's original final album, *When the Eagle Flies* (1974), is a masterpiece. And I also love their 1994 reunion album, *Far from Home* .
Love those Traffic albums.
Just replaced on vinyl as one of my a “choice” albums to break in my new Rega Planar 10 deck! Great choice!
Rush - Clockwork Angels, Chris Squire - Fish Out Of Water, Syd Barrett - Barrett, UK - Danger Money, Roxy Music - Avalon
The Beatles' "Abbey Road" was technically their final release. It's a forerunner of prog and one of my favorite Beatles albums. Also I really like the last original-lineup Who album, Who Are You. It also has prog leanings (ex's "Guitar and Pen," "Music Must Change")
1. Porcupine Tree - The Incident
2. Rush - Clockwork Angels
3. Asia - Gravitas
4. Cream - Goodbye
5. Roxy Music - Avalon
"Arc-en-ciel" actually means Rainbow.
Good selection as always.
Great show.Thanks guys!
Chuck is awesome!
Fantastic to see Bill Nelson get some love. Saw Be-Bop live on the Modern Music and Drastic Plastic tours. Still think “Adventures in a Yorkshire landscape” and “Crying to the sky” are some of the best guitar solos ever.
Be Bop Deluxe live set menyioned is getting the super deluxe box set treatment with all the shows from the UK tour which was reflected on the awesome Live in the Air Age LP (plus EP) being included... I think there are about 16 shows / CDs for the set ... similar set list each night - so may be aimed for the completist ... but the price for the set is super reasonable (about £90 delivered in UK). All the Be Bop box sets have been exemplary productions at a very fair price ... great quality. I have collected all to date and pretty much everything available (radio sessions, TV broadcasts, BBC Concert recordings - great sound quality) is there. If the deluxe box sets are a bit too much, each set to date has also been available as a more manageable 2 CD remastered set - I think these are the versions Pete has been collecting based on the ranking video he did) ... Drastic Plastic was clearly a different direction but the song craft and musicianship remained intact ... with Bill Nelson still delivering nifty sounds on guitar.
@@calummcgregor3662 Thanks for the info - I'll keep an eye out
Clockwork Angels is my personal overall favourite Rush album. The Garden is my favourite Rush song. That being said, their 70s material is amazing and has some incredible highs. I just find Clockwork to be a bit more consistent throughout.
Thank you so much guys! I just picked up 8 of these suggestions and they are all really great! This show is appreciated!!
Thanks Chuck for mentioning Japan. Rain Tree Crow is perhaps more in prog territory but Tin Drum is a great album. Also Pete with Max Webster. Even if that album sucked, which it doesn't, it does have the awesome Battlescar.
The endless river is amazing. It cured my insomnia.
Drastic Plastic! Awesome, red noise is also cool.
Chuck nailed it with Rush Clockwork Angels. One of their 5 best.
Sun Caged, "The Lotus Effect" - such a gem!
I have always LOVED “Civilian” by GG. Great record!
Shadows on the Street is beautiful
I really like Endless River. It feels to me like the continuation of Shine On You Crazy Diamond Parts VI - IX/Wish You Were Here, which is my favorite Floyd Album. I like to play both albums straight through, but I drop the last song on Endless River, Louder Than Words, because it's of a different style and so doesn't fit for me.
These videos take forever - I listen for 2 min, then take a 40-min break to enjoy an album I've never heard!
Awesome show! Here are some of my favourites:
Aquelarre - Siesta
Pete Brown & Piblokto! - Thousands on a Raft
Camel - A Nod and a Wink (not counting the Snow Goose re-recording)
Coroner - Grin
Cressida - Asylum
Cynic - Kindly Bent to Free Us
Death - The Sound of Perseverance
Edge of Sanity - Crimson II
Fusioon - Minorisa
Gentle Giant - Civilian
Hard Meat - Through a Window
Høst - Hardt mot Hardt
King Crimson - The Power to Believe
Landberk - Indian Summer
Marsupilami - Arena
Max Webster - Universal Juveniles
The Mothers of Invention - One Size Fits All
The Move - Message from the Country
Out of Focus - Four Letter Monday Afternoon
Porcupine Tree - The Incident
Quella Vecchia Locanda - Il Tempo Della Gioia
Rush - Clockwork Angels
Steamhammer - Speech
U.K. - Danger Money
Watchtower - Control and Resistance (unless you count the EP)
Web - I Spider
I only just started watching this, but I sure hope somebody picks The Way Up from the Pat Metheny Group. One tune, one hour eight minutes long. Absolutely astounding. Lyle Mays has since passed.
Somebody indicated that Ted Leonard is the new singer with Kansas. Can't seem to find where that's discussed. He is with Spock's Beard, Pattern Seeking Animals and Enchant (still together). Ronnie Platt is the singer with Kansa.
Chuck meant Spock’s Beard
Great stuff! Have to check out some of the picks and this is a much needed video cause usually the latter albums of several prog bands are ignored. Really loved the eclectic nature of the picks. Love how each person here has a different personality and slightly different preference.
My picks in no particular order
Cressida-asylum (even though they released a cd of rare material recently. This was the album they went out on. One of my favorite progressive rock albums of all time)
Death-sound of perseverance
Gordian knot-emergent
Cynic-kindly bent to free us
Blotted science-machinations of dementia (though they released an ep in the lasst decade. This was their last and only full length)
UK - Danger Money (last studio album)
Timothy Pure - Island of the Misfit Toys
Harmonium - l’Heptade
Marillion - Clutching At Straws (end of Fish era)
Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe - ABWH
A little late but loved the show as usual, seen a quite a few of the British bands mentioned live in concert.
I love all of the picks. This show is awesome
This was a fantastic show.
Gentle Giant became the sacrificial lamb of progressive rock. Coupled with their lack of enthusiasm toward commercial rock and the challenge of translating the band to music video, I think they didn't stand a chance. I remember Civilian going straight to the delete bins - too bad, because it's a strong release. Certainly better than Giant For A Day.
going to have to revisit the happy the man. didn't get into it at the time. great show as usual. lots of stuff to check out and drain my bank account to.
Renaissance - Grandine il Vento (Symphony of Light)
Completely agree about Colliseum II.
The biggest 2 last albums I can think of right now are Fish Era Marillion “Clutching at straws” and David Bowie’s Blackstar.
God they are both great.
William Kopecky has a trio based in Marseille called Telescope Road. I've seen them live and they are excellent. William is a superb bass player.
The best examples are Clockwork Angels and The Division Bell. (Rhe endless river is just a bunch of outtakes, to me)
What's Luis talking about? Steven Wilson's Future Bites got to #4 in the UK charts, top 10 all over Europe, 27 in the Billboard Rock chart and he plays the Albert Hall. Not a flop in the slightest. He's not gonna need that Porcupine Tree reunion just for the cash anytime soon. Especially with all the bands lining up to pay him to work on their back catalogue.
I got to disagree. You only need to sell 1500 copies to be top 10 in England. And Wilson was off the charts after the initial week, unless I'm mistaken.
@@JohnnyRecently except Wilson sold out thousands of his super deluxe edition sets on top of the regular CD. And a blu.
Would have surly included Liquid Tension Experiment 2, but was unaware they reformed (??!!)
It’s funny how you did two shows with Martin Poppoff it’s refreshing to watch those videos as a reference
Rush Clockwork Angels 🔥♥️
“Power to Believe” was a strong (studio) ending for Crimson.
Do you know about Band Maid from Japan?
Two of us suggested them before, let's just not give up ;-)
hey Pete. Why not do a Ranking Of The Seven Wilson remix catalogue
What's the connection with Anthony and Eddie Jobson? And which episode do I need to watch to get acquainted?
Captain Beyond "Dawn Explosion".
Max Webster…Yes! Way to go Pete 👍
Return to Forever, "Romantic Warrior"; Tull, "Roots to Branches" (later stuff is Ian). I have 1st Kopecky album and it's great stuff; only 1 I've heard.
Blackstar was mentioned by several people, and I heartily agree. Powerful statement.
@@docbobster There is "Musicmagic" after "Romantic Warrior" ;o)
@@arnaudb.7669 Unfortunately, yes! :D
@@arnaudb.7669 Ugh, you're right. Still, says a lot that I forgot it. (FWIW, I consider Wind and Wuthering to be the final Genesis album!)
@@docbobster Me too! lol
Starcastle their 4th and final album was pretty good much better than the what we thought was the final one reel to reel
Arc-en-ciel = Rainbow in english ! ;-)
1. Pat Metheny Group: The Way Up
2. UK: Danger Money
3. Asia: Gravitas
4. Chick Corea Elektric Band: To The Stars
5. Rush: Clockwork Angels
6. Porcupine Tree: The Incident
The Way Up is an absolute masterpiece.Good call!
Thank you :) I agree with you, it is an absolute masterpiece and it's my favourite PMG album of all time
Although it's not really prog , one of the best final albums for me is L.A. Woman by the Doors .
The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway - Genesis (end of the Gabriel years)
There's 2 ways of looking at this in my opinion; final albums that were great _period_ , and final albums that were solid and a great way to finish but would not necessarily be considered "great" as an album in general.
I think Bowie's "Blackstar" is an example of a final album that was objectively great in and of itself, with no qualification necessary.
I think "Clockwork Angels" was a very solid final album for Rush, but I don't think it's a "great" album in an unqualified sense. It's impressive in many ways. In my opinion, it's a lot better than most of the albums they put out since Signals, so it's pretty amazing one can say that about an album put out 30 years after Signals.
But at the same time, part of this is that - in my opinion - there's a real sharp divide in quality after Moving Pictures versus before Moving Pictures.
From Signals on, there's not many tracks I can honestly say grabbed me right away. I have to actively _work_ at appreciating most of it, and frankly, if it weren't for my love of their first 8 albums, I wouldn't bother.
So I think "Clockwork Angels" is a great album for Rush at that time in their career, but all things being equal, if it was just an album I picked up of a band I'd never heard of and had no investment in, I don't think I'd be all that impressed by it.
But I digress...
Fish says that Weltschmerz is his last, and if so a great way to go out.
I've always like Genesis "Calling all Stations". Might have been viewed more favourable without the Genesis name. It's not a bad album, better than Invisible Touch & We Can't Dance. Good tracks on both, but too many fillers in my opinion.
I would love to get an expanded version of Calling All Stations with the "discarded" b-sides etc. For me, there are some really great songs on the album... it just needed a bit more soak time for folk to appreciate / enjoy ... I like Ray Wilson's vocals a lot ... this album actually is one of my "go to" genesis albums ... I like all eras of the band but this album really works for me (p.s. ... first post lockdown gig will be a trip to Dundee next month to see Steve Hackett performing Seconds Out concert in full ... should be a great night given consistency of performance by Steve and his band over the last few years ... always a great gig)
It was an impossible gig for Ray. Had they stuck it out with a follow up and Banks Rutherford written with him, it could have been great. Agree on Genesis name but that was another bridge too far…
@@calummcgregor3662 oh wow, complete "Seconds Out" that's making my hair stand on end, that would be amazing, hope he realises a live disc.
@@maddysmith8846 I felt sorry for Ray, how do you replace PG or PC. Fish might have been a good choice. I'm a massive Genesis fan, but the "Last Domino" tour doesn't really do it for me, without Chester T. and PC not being in great shape.
@@ik8034 Yes I agree. I didn’t get a ticket. Also I don’t have good memories of Invisible Touch tour at Wembley, the contrary actually, I felt very let down and unwanted as a massive 70’s era fan. I’m going to see Steve Hackett and Seconds Out rescheduled. I think Fish’s outlook on life wouldn’t have sat that well with Mike and Tony but he did do the lyrics for and sing on a Tony Banks track much later. He played it and talked about it on his Fish on Friday You Tube show a few months ago, you may have seen it but if not worthwhile checking out - it’s the one where there are 2 parts as he had a technical meltdown. Sorry can’t recollect the date!
Thought Chuck would pick Cardiacs
Sadly, I had a long day and was going through my list and I wasn't able to procure the album covers.
@@chuckazeee No worries mate. All of your picks were solid.
David Bowie: BLACKSTAR ... Gonna take a lot to beat that as a last album
Camel toured EU playing Snow Goose and Moonmadness these last years
The official video of the relatively recent Royal Albert Hall gig from pre lockdown was (briefly) on RUclips ... fabulous show ... you can get the CD, DVD or BluRay direct from the band's online store ... they did a wee tour about 3 years ago but, if memory serves, only made it as far North as the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester ... a wee bit too far from Aberdeen ... if only they'd made it across the border to Scotland .... Camel are an awesome, melodic, band but with plenty of instrumental fireworks ... all the latter day albums are worth checking out
@@calummcgregor3662 I saw them twice in Lisbon, Portugal. They played entirely both albums and other classic songs from Mirage, RainDances etc the first time with the late keyboard player Guy LeBlanc, and now the last time with the amazing multi-instrumentalist Pete Jones
Tool - fear inoculum
It may not actually be the last one
But if it takes another 13 years for the next one I won’t be around to hear it
Shadow Gallery
"Digital Ghosts"
Starcastle - Citadels (yes I know, but...am i right?)
No. Song Of Times(2008) Excellent one off RIP Gary Strater.
Thin Lizzy Thunder and lightning, not my favourite Lizzy album but what a great album to finish on.
Most people hate it and don't really count it as a Floyd album but I really like The Endless River
Innuendo is my favourite Queen album and a lot count that as the last Queen album but over the years I've really began to enjoy made in heaven mother love is a beautiful song and you don't fool me has one of Brian's greatest solos on it. Its not as good as innuendo but it's still a good album.
Free - Heartbreaker, shame Andy Fraser isn't on it and Paul Kossoff isn't on every track due to his drug problem but its still an enjoyable album.
Bowie's Blackstar a stunning album to go out on.
Most hate on it but I think Led Zeppelin's Coda is a fine collection of songs.
Most of these are not prog albums.
@@sotdude7 your right I realised after I'd commented, should have paid more attention to the title
Here's hoping Fear Inoculum is not Tool's final album!!! I'll be so sad if it is!
"It's coming out this Year, I swear!"
@@planetbarrett6055 wonder how many times Maynard said that from 2006 to 2019
Fish: Weltschmerz
Fabulous swansong ... if you get a chance see him and his band on the farewell tour ... the new songs really work in a live setting ... I was one of the lucky ones to see his one and only gig with his new band before lockdown at the Lemon Tree in Aberdeen .... Fish put the majority of the audio of the gig on RUclips (once the recording levels were sorted out) with option to donate ... proceeds going to his road crew. The album was my top pick for 2020 ... great songs, beautifully recorded ... p.s. check out the superb video for Garden of Remembrance .... oh and go see him in Glasgow at O2 Academy on Nov 24th if you have a chance ...
