A month with the Huawei P20 Pro - long term review

  • The Huawei P20 Pro is the first mainstream smartphone to pack three cameras - and that's cool, but it was the full package that made the phone so good when we first reviewed it.
    In its favour, it has a huge battery - 4,000mAh, an OLED screen and a slick design as well as 128GB storage. As for the negatives, there's no headphone jack or SD card slot.
    A month on though, how is Huawei's finest faring? Is the Kirin 970 processor cutting the mustard? Is the camera crumbling in the real world or is it still impressing us?
    Watch our long-term test to find out and head over to www.techradar.... for all the details.

    Ok, I'm really not young at all people! I'm 63 so haven't grown up in smart phone' world. I bought this phone yesterday, ive only really owned old phones and cast offs! I can honestly say, as a complete novice, this phone has already blown me away with the things it can do. I thought it would take me ages, and lots of 'lessons' from my way more knowledgeable son to even text, buts it's so easy!! It's user friendly, and I'm so excited about learning all the things it can do. This phone has wide appeal. Even us dinosaurs can use it! Thank you for this review. Huawei P20 Pro 👏🏻

    Having owned, samsung/apple/htc - I can honestly say this phone is a revelation. I can go 2 days without charging, I dont get the critical responses re the screen, its not as good as the s9 plus (which is the best screen on the market) but that is really just nitpicking. The sound is incredible, it is without doubt gorgeous, functional and robust. The camera - honestly dont even think that any other smartphone comes that close, if you spend some time, learn the features - it delivers and delivers, especially at night. It is cheaper on contract than a iphone x or samsung s9 plus - and I honestly think it stomps the apple in every way, the samsung is pretty neck and neck, but as I am often out and about for long periods of time the battery won the decision for me. Huawei are making phones on a par and better in some respects to the "established" brands - I hope they continue to improve as the lack of innovation and increasing prices dont justify the final product in most cases from certain other brands.
    Interesting that a company comes along, produce a great innovative product and people try to rubbish certain aspects of the phone as opposed to look at the R and D and real life aspects of the handset - I think it is a bit like those who cheer on ferrari vs other supercars without ever having driven any of them.
    One last thing as a phone - yes an actual thing to make calls from, it is the best phone I have ever owned, great call quality and holds signal all the time.

      Same here! I've owned the X for 7 months, the S9 plus for 2 months and now jumped to this and I could not be happier. Truly a revelation compared to the other two.

      Got mine last saturday. Screen is very good. I personally don't notice the resolution change (I've been using a Note 4 for 4 years (It has a 1440p display)). The battery lasts minimum of 6-8h SoT, which is pretty much since 9-23 o clock of intense usage (RUclips, games, messanger, 1 hour of using the camera. GPS, sync, wifi, mobile data always on). Performance is stellar, every game i threw at it, it handled perfectly. It's snappy, there wasnt a single lag spike, nothing. The fingerprint scanner is instant, literally unlocks in a heartbeat. Everything about cameras has been said, so no point in saying anything else. It's a great phone, totally worth it.

PRO version is now on ebay for 879USD, even cheaper than its price in the EU. Thus is much cheaper than s9+ and iPhone x.

    Just upgraded my Samsung S7 to P20 Pro, and was a little nervous due to mix of reviews. I wanted something different, and was impressed by the camera reviews which was why I had been pleased with my S7 too.
    Your review was very good and unbiased which is very helpful. I was impressed by the normal speak, by that I mean a lack of jargon, which helped me check what I now know about my phone and what you have recommended.
    I'm a week into owning this and have not been disappointed as it does everything I need, and is very customisable.
    Thanks for your review.

    Although its a little dissapointing that there is no stablization in 4k videos, most users are just sharing short clips on phone or on social media. Very few would use a phone for any serious videotography work. 1080p is more than enough for most people.

      Bushangels Hmmm i dont know , to be sure its a nice phone mate with some cool camera features and a nice paint job , i would not buy it though .
      it is being sold as a camera focused phone (scuse the pun ) ,
      No ois on 4k may not be a deal breaker on its own for some , but why compromise ....... no headphone jack , no sd card , no wireless charging , and it is not cheap ,
      When people say it is cheaper than device X one needs to weigh it carefully .
      Also a bunch of other good camera phones are yet to be released this year , as well as the mate 20 variants with the 2018 chipset which the p20`s do not have .
      I`m thinking 6 or 8 months down the track buyers remorse big time ????? or not :) .

    Two things I will give to this phone: battery life sounds fantastic and photos can be really good (once you turn off Master AI)
    But for me it costs more than a S9+ and for that it lacks a lot of features, the video is sub-par (don't get me started on that janky 960fps), the display... I truly believe 1080p can still be flagship in 2018 but not with an AMOLED Pentile matrix at 6.1'' and early impressions are the front glass is quite easy to break. I really wish Huawei would stop making compromises all over the place with these premium-priced devices

    When are reviewers going to start taking note of the antique UI and laggy touch response? How can a professional reviewer NOT take notice of these things?

    • @l8zin532
      @l8zin532 6 лет назад +1

      Kristian Tigersjäl 1. EMUI isn't antique, just different and colorful. 2. It isn't unresponsive at all, maybe it was with the pre applied screen protector but I can't remember

    • @kristian.tigersoul
      @kristian.tigersoul 6 лет назад

      L8zin different and colorful, not what I would call it when the margins are huge and meaningless or when the app switcher isn't even scrolled down to give you the most of the screen without scrolling.
      And yes, there is a scrolling issue. Look for the the topic horrible touch lag on xda.

    • @slandgkearth
      @slandgkearth 6 лет назад +2

      Scrolling issue lol, just 2 users complaining, i have it and i see no lag scrolling in any app. And i use a pixel 2 too , i got a 1gb update 2 days ago.

    • @l8zin532
      @l8zin532 6 лет назад +1

      Kristian Tigersjäl OK maybe there is a horrible touch lag problem, but on my device and on every p20 pro I have ever touched or seen in a video it's been fine. And I'm pretty sure you get a new phone from huawei if you have that problem.

    • @jzvr5842

      How are they supposed to take note of things that don't exist lmao, I have one in hand, zero touch response issues, try one before spreading BS.

    Okay can I just say something here. The kirin 970 is not powerful at all if you take the snapdragon or the exynos it is not at all as powerful. They suck at optimization witch make the battery just average. And finale the photos look so processed i don't even know to begin. I'd rather have a asus 5z it's cheaper has a better screen to body ratio. Good and power afficient processor. It has a headphone jack. You get AI boost witch increases performance even more. As a reviewer I expect you to inform the people and i feel like you are being untruthful. The p20/p20p/p20l does not have gorilla glass of any typ.

      have u tried using this phone yourself? how do u know about all those issues you mentioned?

    • @FU-2
      @FU-2 6 лет назад

      Wirawan Ciputra I got my mom to buy the p10 plus and it's so bad it has aged worse than my p9 it got scuffs all over and the paint is falling off and it's not good. So yeah I know these issues. And a friend off mine has the p20p. But don't take my word for it the internet is full off information about the processor about the lack off optimization so on and so on.

      Better speakers than the S9 and the iPhone X, better performance than the SD845 (Honor Play with GPU Turbo is already beating the SD845 in app launch and gaming frame rates, update coming to Huawei phones soon too), best battery life, better cameras number one out there, fastest charging, fastest fingerprint sensor, IR blaster, PC mode with just a cable etc., this is hands down the best phone out now. You're just salty if you haven't tried it stop talking.

    • @jzvr5842
      @jzvr5842 6 лет назад +1

      GPU Turbo actually saves battery and increases efficiency, I have the P20 Pro and battery life has been spectacular, try one before you talk, also regarding screen to body ratio the FPS doubles as a navigation button and can replace all three buttons so it's actually freeing up screen real estate. Best cameras out there period, Pixel can't compete in low light and Huawei's Supercharge is faster than Dash Charging.

I'll take this over a laggy piece of shit that turns into a dead paper weight in a month and with battery life that can't last a day any day. Shitsung fanboys are just salty their Shitsungs are pieces of shit in comparison lmao.

      JZ VR JZ VR I don't have a Samsumg so whatever. But most of the things you mentioned are complete bullshit and you know it. A Kirin 970 can't even beat a SD835. Finger print reader is not the fastest, and the phone just isn't that good overall. And dead piece of weight LOL you must have not owned a Huawei before. Go look up how their flagships from 2-3 years are doing now literally a dead weight cos the battery lasts 5 seconds and no updates in years.

      Garret141076 He criticised the screen, wasn't too impressed with video compared to the camera, said the low light wasn't groundbreaking and said the user interface could do with refining. To me it came across as the honest review of somebody who used this phone for a month.

  • @pyrosdestiny
    @pyrosdestiny 6 лет назад

    I'm not paying that price for that chipset. Phones company's have a cartel going on these price increases with diminishing returns. The screens are the same, the cameras are barely improving and the build quality has remained largely the same with just different finishes and less bezels. Phones should be no more than 500-600 one plus has proven this.

    • @jzvr5842
      @jzvr5842 6 лет назад +1

      Oneplus isn't doing the same level of R&D so ofc their prices can be cheaper, Huawei spends 14 billion on R&D a year, almost twice of apple.
