Kösem sultan is portrayed as the most significant, competent, magnificent and charismatic sultan in all the women in Ottoman history, but I feel like her sons just cannot surpass their mother. I heard when the parents are too capable their children are not able to grow well under their influence, which I think is this exact case. Kösem’s son Mehmed, and this one as well…
Its the case for every sultan and Prince, there father, the king were always more competent and then were there mothers, queens too but that didn't stopped their individual growth

I love Turhan & Mahidevran Sultan the most. Both ladies loved their sons more than anything & anyone. Turhan was fortunate & obviously too much sharp-calm minded, so she won the battle & made her son the King. But Mahidevran Sultan unfortunately lost all because of her anger & lost Mustafa who could be the best Sultan after Suleiman 🙂

Mahidevran might love Mustafa but she's an idiot and greedy. She also surrounded herself with bunch of people like Hatice, Gulfem, Shah Huban and Ibrahim. She suffered great lost because of her own action too.
Actually Mehmed was more talented than Mustafa so I think Mehmed would be a better king (in real history).

I didn't knew anything about the Sultanate of the women or much about Ottoman History from Suleiman I. the Magnificents death to 1683, but Turhan sounds to be a very very interesting Sultana-Regent.
What Kosem didn't account for was she was secretly teaching Turhan.
I actually like Turhan. She's Kosem, but also her own person who cares for her son, unlike a certain main character. Also, this might be an unpopular opinion, but Kosem is getting on my nerves with the constant murder and grabbing for power.

I like Turhan Sultan tbh. She is a smart woman and she did all she could to prevent the death of her child (and herself). If Kosem didn’t go mad near the end of her life and try to force her rule I’m 100% sure she would’ve continued as the head of the sultanate until her death as Turhan had a lot of respect for her (even tho she wanted her spot).
Also, I wish Geverhan was live instead of Atike. No disrespect to her but she’s always causing problems instead of contributing to the solution. And don’t get me started on this sorry excuse for a sultan! He got what he deserved in the end thankfully.

i dont understand why in the Kosem series the culture is almost gone....they use a lot european dresses and the colors are too grey.....when I go bacl to see the first series with hurrem it really makes you feel it is in old turkey.....
I always wondered, how historically accurate the dresses and hairdos and such were. And did they really have that many crowns? The sultanas seem to wear a different one with almost every outfit - which seems excessive, even for such fabulously rich rulers.
I know my way around European historical fashion (more or less, anyway)...but I wouldn't even know, where to start research here.
Just from an esthetic standpoint, I much preferred the outfits in the Hurrem series as well, though!
The costumes in Hurrem were even worse tbh, at least some of the kalfa and hatun's costumes in Kosem accurately represent 16th century Turkish female fashion in some degree, Hurrem's costume design were pretty much Tudor wannabe(not saying Kosem's costumes were great tho, Kosem's were pretty much Catherine the great wannabe). Actually both Hurrem and Kosem series had inaccurate costumes, in fact most of those costume were inspired by reimagined harem attire by Western orientalist. European influence on harem fashion does exist in real history but they should be much later. At this period most Ottoman women should be wearing loose fitting kaftan with large pants not dress, also some of the costumes in both drama looks like they're straight from 21st century lol. For more accurate Ottoman female fashion you can always look for Sadberk Hanim Museum's collections.
Edit: I just found this 2010 movie "Mahpeyker Kosem Sultan", although not the best movie but this movie alone has more accurate costumes compare with both series.

@@elsascridon7256 I found a drama from 2012, set during 18th-century Ottoman Empire called "Bir Zamanlar Osmanlı: Kıyam", the costumes looked exactly like those from Sadberk Hanim Museum and very much like those 19th-century old photos. However it doesn't just focus on harem drama or imperial politic like Muhtesem Yuzyil, the story mostly about story of assassins and the people during the tulip period and the Patrona Halil rebellion.
@@tsukasa1608 True, I found the costumes used in Magnificent Century feat. Hurrem to be out of touch of reality. The way the character of Hurrem constantly exposed her bosom made me feel like I was watching one of those ladies from the Tudor series and not the Ottoman dynasty. The show was brilliant but not the costumes especially Hurrem's -- European influence or not.

look, I get Ibrahim the mad had a fetish for larger women (as he did historically in real life), but I disagree with their use of Sugarcube as a caricature for how they assume all plus-sized women look or behave. Sloppy nonstop eaters with no manners or self awareness? C'mon guys, most women with fuller figures aren't like that. I feel sorry for the real life Sugarcube. It has been recorded that she was executed (strangled with a bow string) after Ibrahim's own death just for being one of his most favorite concubines.
From what I read the actual Sugercube was someone who constantly ate to keep the sultans favour. Apparently she was worried that she would lose weight and also lose the favour of the sultan, so was very careful with what she ate. So the drama actually did a good portrayal of the actual Sugercube.

Esmetullah Rabia Gulnuş (daughter-in-law of Turhan, wife of Mehmed Dordüncu) who was Valide 2 times, managed to dethrone her first son to put her second son on the throne, was in charge of the politics of the empire openly and interfered in many of the decisions of his sons, one even declared war on Russia.
Aisha Nakshidil who controlled her husband which puppet, her stepson consulted her and allowed him to influence politics since Nakshidil saved him many times because they were highly appreciated. Nakshidil was one of the people who played the most important role in deciding the extermination of the great Genizaro army.
When her biological son ascended to the throne, she reached the peak of her power, could continue to participate fully in politics, was one of the most charitable sultanas and followed the architectural legacy of Turhan.
Turhan was quite a maligned Sultana for killing Kösem just to protect her little son, the people didn't like that and they told a lot of lies about her since the empire was angry.
At first he ceded power to the grand vizier Koprolu Mehmed Pasha who only lasted in power for a little over 4 years.
Turhan already had knowledge of politics since she was educated by Mapeyker Kösem and in the 4 years of Koprolu's regency, Turhan learned to properly rule the empire.
Turhan was the first Sultana to legally share fully equal power with a sultan, she protected the life of Mehmed's (her son) half-brothers, was one of the best policies of the empire and was a pioneer in architecture being an excellent ruler.

Actually, no. Turhan Sultana ended just the Sultanas Ruling Period of the Ottoman Empire. Hurrem started it, Turhan ended it. And that was the best she could do because Ottoman Empire startet to collapse because of the reign of the Sultanas. Kosem was very power thirsty and killed many sheihzades because she wanted to reign alone. That meant: no win of land, no wars, inner collapsing because the new sultans (the children) are not enough to be sultans because of their young age (guess why they were little children? Because the older ones were killed.) The Sultanas were not that clever as they are (at least not clever enough to rule such a huge empire) shown in the series and the sultans are not “dumb” like in the series.
