The topic in this video is a little different than what I usually post. I have a lot of thoughts on this type of thing and wasn't 100% sure if I should post it here or if it belongs in a separate perhaps new channel. I'd love to hear from you if you think I should post more videos like this or just stick with RUclips tips :-) I hope you're having a great day!!

@@RobtheMaritimer Just my opinion, but, yes, I'm thrilled you posted this video. Again, it was a timely video (for me)... so, it was very welcomed. It's exactly the type of content I, too, was grappling with (i.e., hoping to incorporate) into my own [new] YT channel, even though that channel, on its face, is largely about Earth Science (Geology) and environment (fyi... Ive only done two videos, one short, and posted two polls - crickets, but it's only been 10 days since I officially launched 🙃 LOL). Anyway... if you choose to embrace this more personal aspect of yourself/topics, and start doing more of these kinds of videos on your *Rob The Maritimer* channel, I'll definitely stay watching, and can learn and enjoy seeing how you incorporate it all, too. In that way, we will learn and grow together! ☺️

Yeah, this was good content. Perhaps you need to do it on another channel though. I'm 68 and just starting a YT channel. I've done several practice videos just to get use to hearing my voice and seeing my older self in video. Goodness, at first, I hated it, then the more I do it, I realized, "Well that's me, so get used to it." Thinning hair, smile lines (wrinkles), raspier voice, little slower in talking... I think GenX'ers and Boomers are coming out of the woodwork on YT. Everyone has different stories. For technology, learning all the ins and outs is a whole different way of thinking of how systems work. The younger generation grasps it immediately, but that's all they've grown up with. I grew up with dial and push button phones, record players, radio. Then caught up with computers, CD's, DVD and such. Was way behind the times when we finally got a cell phone. What a learning curve and I still don't have a grasp on all the functions. So uploading a video and pics from phone to laptop is a struggle. Like everything, it's a learning curve, but now it's a long drawn out curve. Ugh.

Rob, I think this video was spot on AND very timely. Anyone with a couple of brain cells to rub together is being contemplative at this time of the year. These frank points need to be heard. We need to be honest with ourselves, and our power is in our lived experience as well as our limitations. I could have accomplished more when I was younger if I’d had someone speak to me like you have in this video, but you’re right about not being able to turn back the clock (there’s not really a Tardis, well, as far as we know). It’s only too late if we don’t start now. We can’t change the fact we didn’t do this a year ago, 10 years ago, or longer, but now that we know, it’s our responsibility to take that knowledge and put it to work. Like Red Green always said: I’ll pulling for you; we’re all in this together.

@@RobtheMaritimerNot getting enough sleep can mimic early dementia. I found that out when I took Dr. Amen’s memory test on his website. Your brain needs at least 4 hours of sleep in one chunk for its lymphatic system to flush all the dead skin cells out, then you need a minimum of 3 more hours of sleep for your brain to repair and reboot. It’s like rebooting your computer to clean out all the little pieces of the cache that don’t get deleted when you run your cleaning software. . . You can also lose your train of thought from attempting to track too many different things at the same time. Simplifying personal, home, and home business systems, as well as decluttering sleep and work spaces really help boost brain function and tracking capabilities. And honestly? I probably lost my train of thought when I was in my 20s and just was too full of myself for it to impress on my consciousness. I’m so thankful I’m not in my 20s anymore!

Yes, I agreed 💯!!! Glad you decided to make a video regarding our lives! Getting old is a privilege although I do feel sad a little when I face new challenges over the things I no longer do as an older person! I missed my youth and the energy and all the silly hopes & dreams I have had! The dreams of yesteryears no longer relevant so all I can do now is to plan a new life with new dreams in my season of life with what I have. Acceptance is my greatest lesson today and learn to be at peace every moment! ❤

It's a function of age that I've grown to accept wholeheartedly. I joke about it with my quip about women dealing with "PMS" in their lifetime. However, I deal with "CRS" which I explain as, "Can't remember Sh__!" And by all means, continue to mix up your videos and post topics as you see fit. You don't need to start another channel. Great video Rob, the timing is spot on for me. Just got back in from dinner with my family, we went out for my birthday today. I have been pondering some of these same things you mentioned in your video for quite a while leading up to today. I uploaded a video a few weeks ago, I made it, because getting older has been on my mind a lot these days. I am very fortunate and grateful, to still be around, to spend time with my family. The older I get, the more precious those times are to me. I am 53 now, like you said, slowing down and changing is a natural process of getting older. Some of those changes are definitely more challenging than others, and some folks can handle those challenges better than others. But you are absolutely right, there is no sense wasting time and getting stressed out about it. Just roll with it.
No one can stop it, time does what it does.
Time is a thief, before we realize it, it has stolen our best years from us. We need to slow down and enjoy the ride.
Thank You for this video. It really resonates with me.

    Hey Rob.
Great topic for me. First comment I’ve made on your channel.
I’m a few months from 70 years old, and all of your points are relevant to me.
I do wish I had my hair from my 20’s when I was a Rock & Roll drummer, but that’s not realistic. The ability to do certain physical things, not so much now. My contribution would be to not think retirement is the freedom you really think it is if you don’t plan the one thing you need to keep you motivated everyday. Stopping work after 50 years of going to the job, whatever it was for me, was the goal. Well afterwards, 2-3 months into into it, realized I needed to plan better to do things that will keep me motivated because not having a job, which becomes part of your identity, then stopping suddenly, was really a shock to my lifestyle for one thing but the overall driver that kept me moving and had a purpose to it everyday.
I did the best I could to save and work a pensionable job for 18 years in the end, but at 66 years old my body and mind just wanted to stop.
So the income circumstances being what they were, I moved to Central America to provide a better lifestyle than I could have afforded in Canada.
I’ve done well so far, good location near the beach, not so expensive rental, I like to cook so not relying on restaurants is good for the budget, and overall “I’d rather be here than there”
I’m still struggling to get motivated everyday, I wanted to start a RUclips channel to show what life is like to retire here, and what I do, but again haven’t done it quite yet.
It certainly was not what I thought I’d be doing at 70.
I do enjoy your channel and all the tips and tricks, great info on doing a RUclips channel. Keep it up. 👍

Funny about the hair 😁 After 20+ years with a #2 buzz cut I started growing it again last year. It's now about as long as it was when I was 23 (back in the 70s) and everyone says that I look 10 years younger. Long hair can be a hassle but so far I think it's worth it.

Well I’ve really got nothing on top, and when I cut the remaining bits, it’s a #2 or #1 in some areas.

One of the reasons it may appear that we slow down cognitively as we get older, a significant reason is that we have a lot of memories that slows down the processing speed. When I was in my twenties I knew very little compared to what I know now, so back then there was eternal sunshine on a spotless mind. 😊

Thanks, Rob. How timely, for me, to see this. These topics you discussed are seemingly always on my mind... getting older. I admit that I "live too much in the past" (i.e., pine for) and I always have. Even as a young person, I recall a sadness with every passing birthday (why was that!?). But I've been through a lot in the past 5 years, especially; it's made me reflect on my life, and lately I've come to believe that the root of my overwhelm with nostalgia, and my melancholy with aging, has simply always been fear. I'll be 55 this next May wow!? 🙃😜 ) and I admit, I don't like that. **"How did I get here? ...Where have the years gone?... I still feel (and act) like I'm 25 or 30, and I can't believe I'm nearing twice that... I haven't yet done awesome things with my life!... I'm not ready to get old... I'm not ready to see my parents go!"** ... These are the words I find taxing my mind, especially when I put my head on the pillow each night. And I know others my age can relate. You touched on many of these feelings... and whereas I don't find it as easy to embrace the aging process, I did find a comfort, "camaraderie," and peace in what you've said/shared. Thank you. And I think therein lies the solution to much of this: having community and friends (especially if you've no siblings, like me) with whom we can relate, and with whom we can share the feelings, events, and experiences we're all having, together. Having such connections (friends, companionship, community) in our lives, at every stage, is important. It can't change or reverse the fact we're all aging, or fix our circumstances, sadness, or whatever we might experience with regard to our aging, but it can soften the journey through it all. And that is what a beautiful life is all about, I suppose. ❤
    ... "88 rules!" 😜 LOL

When our dad used to say he was losing his hair, my older brother would say to him, "Have you tried looking behind the sofa". Now that my brother is going a bit thin on top, our dad says, "Don't worry son I'm still looking behind the sofa, and if I find any strands belonging to you I'll hand them straight over"😂. The wheel surely does turn 😁.

I'm only a few minutes into the video, but wanted to comment :) Mostly on the topic of aging
    1) Today is the youngest you will ever be
    2) If you are wondering if you have "enough time" left - consider this: If you are 50 and are expected to live to 85 (average lifespan) then that means you will live another 35 years. 50 minus 35 is 15. This means the time ahead of you is the same as all the years you lived from 15-50. Let that sink in.

Great video and it is interesting how much our mindset changes with age. You definitely nailed it when it comes to telling the same stories over and over again. luckily on RUclips, we have the excuse that there may be new viewers who haven't heard that one before ;-)

I couldn’t have started a channel before 50. There are a variety of reasons, and all compounded by becoming timid from domestic violence. Being over 50 has energized me, made me realize that I have experience that would help others, and that here-being short and a woman is not something that is a factor.

Happy New Year to you, Rob! Thanks for all your great content(even though I’ve not managed to make any vids yet). When I was young, I tended to live life organically if you know what I mean. I used to compare myself to flotsam and jetsam-going where the wind blew, as far as I could. My biggest piece of advice to younger people would be to plan, plan, plan. I know the best laid plans can go belly up but planning, esp financial planning, is worth its weight in gold. You’ll be v happy you did when you’re old. I did not. They were different times then I know but still the best advice I can think of. Sth we were and are never taught in schools yet the most valuable.
Happy2025 again Rob and I look forward to more excellent content! 🙏X

Just curious... when you uploaded this did you share it with your subscribers? Very different from the rest of the stuff on your channel and I've noticed when I post "out of my niche" content to my subs, I lose subscribers and the watch time metrics are poor. I realize subs are more of a vanity metric, but poor engagement can kill a video getting pushed out.

    • @RobtheMaritimer
      @RobtheMaritimer  2 дня назад +6

Yes I did. The topic is a little different than my other videos, but I feel like it's something many of my subscribers think about. Call this a "soft pivot" or a test of a topic I think a lot about. If it resonates with viewers then I'll do more like them. If not, then that's data from the experiment too :-) I guess we'll see if this is something that resonates with them :) Thanks for your comments!

Like you! I will be creating an over 50 channel where we can do some kind of generational wisdom and get off of this talking just amongst ourselves because I think that’s not healthy either. We need to be able to reach out to younger generations just like the younger generations need to reach out to us. We offer great experience to one another. We have Life experience. They have knowledge of software and things and processes that we could even think of.

    • @RobtheMaritimer
      @RobtheMaritimer  2 дня назад +1

I think it's important to be as authentic as possible. If age isn't a part of what you're talking about then I wouldn't worry about including it... but if it comes up I think you should just be honest about it. At the end of the day it likely doesn't matter anyways... if there's value in the content you're providing then age shouldn't matter. That's just my take :-) Best of luck with it!!

I am not sure if losing your train of thought is typical for 50 - 60. I don't think I have a problem with that, and I am one day younger than you. Also, technology is not something I struggle with. I am typically the one that is telling the younger generation how things work. I work in the IT department so it is not uncommon that people come to me with questions about tech. I don't even have the feeling that it takes me much longer to learn something new. Learning now how to use Fusion in Davinci Resolve and that is completely new to me, and I don't have a problem with that. I am now about a year a member of a chess club and I am beating more and more people and people that are much older than me are still very strong with chess.

In response to your pinned comment Rob, IMO that's why your Channel is called Rob the Maritimer. Although your focus is getting into RUclips for over 40s, this type of content still aligns with that. If your channel was named & niched as "Over 40 & Making Videos" then maybe this would be off topic. Maybe I align with what you're saying because I am of similar age? I don't know. Either way I loved the video and, to me it all made sense. Perhaps it's like having a delayed conversation? 🙂

A different video for you today, but we need to talk about our time on earth. I just heard a friend has cancer of the spine. Another has bone cancer and another friend has prostate cancer and then there are those that passed in the last few years. Get happy now and stay healthy is the goal for 2025 and beyond. As you end the video the stock market is dropping today. Add that to the joys of life lol. Also you look like you could add some more layers in that cold looking scenery? Hi!
Today I made the last job application for the field of physical education (for which I have the highest education). After this, I will stop applying. Age discrimination is really common in Finland and unfortunately it affects me so strongly now. Fortunately, I have another education.
It would be better for all job seekers if the applications were anonymous in the following matters: age, name and gender. That way, everyone who is formally qualified would even be able to get an interview. Now the selections are made with age, name and gender first. This is not right anymore in today's world.
    💫Hyvää Uutta Vuotta 2025! = Happy New Year 2025! 💫
Ps. I saw that young people are driving there like in Finland too...with a tractor ATV. 😄
