there is a legendry truuck here in nz called the concorde,a 1973 w924 kenworth powered by the detroit v12 450hp back when the 335hp cummins had hit the block, sounds fantastic can hear for miles ,and when she"s jaking incredible racket the most efficient engine for turning diesel into noise
A Detroit Diesel (Like this one) 2 stroke does not use mixed oil and fuel like your weedwacker. They're pretty much the same as a regular diesel engine, except they don't have intake valves and the exhaust valve is at the bottom of the cylinder.
During the Gulf War I was the Chief Engineer on LCU 1661, Landing craft has TWO of these engines! One in each engine room. Just enough power to bring three M-60 tanks (two Ton Each) to the beach!
While talking to my 83 year old nebor who spent 30 years of his life building our interstate highways, he told me about the engine that built America as we know it, a Detroit 16V92 with 4 turbos and 2 blowers, I typed this in yahoo and my Jaw dropped! These engines were used in non-road large 30 Yard dump trucks, scrapers, boats, even high speed Army Tanks!
your right detroits use a factory fitted supercharger to force the air into the cylinders but they are considered to be naturals if they dont have turbos
I have seen this truck pull a sled in Medicine Hat, Alberta before it retired and it was insane. They loaded the sled with all of the weights they could find and he could have pulled it to the North Pole.
WOW! this is an amazing video of detroit diesel power. My old man had a PAIR of these 12V71's in his Richardson boat, what a roar and a lot of speed. I love the sound of those screamin' jimmies! Thanks for sharing this vid.
The US military also used this motor, the 12V-71T, on its phased-out M747, 22 1/2-ton, heavy-haul tractor. Some looked like two 6V-71 motors mated together. Notice the motor hunting at idle.
This thing is the queen of pulling. Some of the sounds are used in a Kenworth 924 mod for Rigs of Rods. The idle is from a different truck but the high speed sounds are used in that mod. The horn is obviously from somewhere else but man that thing sounds mean. If only it could idle smoothly. Still one badass rig nonetheless
I have to leave yet another comment, If your computer does not have a good set of speakers with sub-woofer and a Sound blaster sound card, spend the $50 as this video rocks with a nice speaker setup. I second the gutsy people walking in front of that truck, id watch any long hair!
They have 4V71 engines in a few bulldozers close to where I live and they run up to 3200 RPM, put out 140HP. They sound like an old Panzer tank when they are running. A stock 12V71TT puts out 540HP at 2100rpm.
just above 2,100 RPM for this engine is the stock limiter the 53 series like a 6v53 or 8v53 can top 3,000 and some Military Marine 6v53's had a gov bypass to allow it to free rev as far as the engine could to get away when under fire
most turbo detroits "Gallup" like this, its in the governor and fuel rack

Two stroke diesel engines have valves and seperate intake systems and fuel injector. And have crankcase, oil filter and oil pump. Like the four stroke ones, intake system injects only air to pistons. Lubricant oil is supplied by a pump and there is a fuel injector on top. (Near the exhaust valves) For further info : Search : "Diesel two stroke" on "howstuffworks" website
Still are, but they are built by Electro-Motive Diesel (formerly Electro Motive Division GM), and are the design upon which these Detroit Diesel engines owe their existence. EMD's current flagship locomotive, the SD70ACe, runs a two-stroke 16-cylinder 710 engine.
tough to make good smoke with the turbo model in neural on the new ULSD fuel.. I would love to buy one of these trucks and restore it, then drive it to work park it next to my coworkers fancy power stroke and ask him for a pull off as its warming up with its governor Gallup as this one does in the first few seconds with the sound echoing threw 8" pipes! Sweet sound indeed!!! Plus I feel this body style of truck just looks aggressive with the long hood and flat fenders above the tires
The exhaust valves r in the cylinder head, top of cylinder, the inlet ports r in the cylinder so the piston uncovers just before BDC, this is called a uniflow type.
yep the fuel rack just needs to be readjusted, which is prety tricky if you dont know how its done ( i can kinda do it,but not the 100% proper way) detroits like this that are modified almost always surge like that.
Detroits like this are 2-stroke engines. They have compression each stroke. 4-stroke engines have compression every other stroke. Therefore, a 2-stroke engine will sound like it's going 2x the speed it really is because most people are used to listening to 4-strokes. At 2000 RPM this guy sounds like 4000 RPM. It sounds to me like he's doing about 3000-3500 RPM. (sounds like 6000-7000 RPM)
Can I run Amsoil intercepter synthetic 2 stroke oil in a 12v71? Royal purple synthetic 2 stroke oil works fine in a 6v53 but the oil is not cheap! I notice this oil burns very clean in the 6v 53 2 stroke. this oil can take abuse of motorcross and snowmoble and it worked fine in an old 6v53 which likes straight weight. What is the oil burn rate of a 12v71 2 stroke??
What he should be more worried about is oil pressure... Screw the rings. If the oil is cold, and doesn't flow proper like it should it could cause the main bearings to spin. Detroits are rather notorious for spinning main bearings if the oil pressure isn't JUST right.
Gose? What is gose? IT's not there because it's fast, per se. Actually, those things are rather slow. They're designed to pull. It's just there because it looks cool :D
every turbo jimmy i have seen has a little governor gallup- seems that this is rigged to exceed its 2,200 limit and that may also cause the idle gallup
Think of it this way...12 cylinders x 71 cubes per = 852 with power on every turn of the crank from all 12. 2 turns of the crank gives you the benefit twice from all 12. 2 turns on a 4 stroke gives you but one punch of power each. Not hard to see how the power builds in so few cubic inches. they had their place and time. corporate bean counters killed them off....who knows what these motors would have become given today's tech

That sure sounds "The Business".
Angry little thing!

I keep thinking that any second that engine is going to explode. that thing is fucking HOWLING! nice one.
I can watch this 1000 times! It never gets old!
yep
Them old two stroke detroits put a lot of food on the table for me growing up. Must be why I love em soo much. That and they sound soo nice.
Run some yuppy 4 stroke asshole out of the way

I really dont know how anyone stood that close to that V12 at those revs, the noise must have been something else, but it's so sweet!
your right detroits use a factory fitted supercharger to force the air into the cylinders but they are considered to be naturals if they dont have turbos
one mean machine, keeping Tundras hiding in their mommies skirt for a long time (or maybe the closet)
That ole KWhopper sounds GOOOOOOOOD NOTHIN sounds like or runs LIKE A SCREAMIN Dozen Detriot ! ;)
I have seen this truck pull a sled in Medicine Hat, Alberta before it retired and it was insane. They loaded the sled with all of the weights they could find and he could have pulled it to the North Pole.

when a big rig sounds like a nascar race either something is very wrong, or very very awesome!
god im just a 17 year old kid and i love that sound
NICE!!! this truck is from my town, its sitting just out of town, I love how this beast sounds, its sex.
wow the warm idle is amazing
That engine is built right, no smoke under no load when putting fuel to it nice engine.
It could instantly kill any 4 stroke asshole that gets in his way. enough said
if i had something like this a lot of people assholes would be dead
Flatten any 4 stroke asshole on the spot
A 12v71 2 stroke creating a black hole in the aether or space time, this would make an awsome pulsed plasma 2 stroke.
If I am not mistaken, that is a V12!
Wasn't this truck retired?
That dirty dozen sure sounds beautiful. Gives me chills as he raises the RPM's.
That was a note to pollution provokers. Btw: Engine sound is beatiful.
wow pure thrill what a sound love those detroits
Love the idle lope...
12v & 16v 2 strokes were also used in locomotives also ;)
Just pure sweet Power!
man thats one helluva truck! awesome motor
The US military also used this motor, the 12V-71T, on its phased-out M747, 22 1/2-ton, heavy-haul tractor. Some looked like two 6V-71 motors mated together. Notice the motor hunting at idle.

I want one. they sound amazing and from this vid, you look like they know how to handle an insane amount of abuse

Detroits have that characteristic lope at idle. They all do it. I think it has something to do with cylinder scavenging and it being a 2 stroke.
Nice engine pre-heat !!!
who is the dude gunning the hell out of that beast! I wanna meet him! Awesome vid! V12 power!
nice sounding engine

any 4 stroke asshole would loos there life infront of this thing and i would love to see, haha
SOUND!!!!cool
Screamin Detroits rock, one thing to remember is that a V12 2 stroke at 2100 RPM sounds the same as a Gas V6 at 8200RPM
most turbo detroits "Gallup" like this, its in the governor and fuel rack

300 dB, can be heard 1.5 miles away...yup, good ol' Detroit Diesel!!
yup good old detroit gallup, mostly effects the turbo ones
nice sounding truck you got there

the sound of love
The exhaust valves r in the cylinder head, top of cylinder, the inlet ports r in the cylinder so the piston uncovers just before BDC, this is called a uniflow type.
@DAF460 Yes. Jake brakes were available for the 53, 71, and 92 series.
The 12v71 2 stroke that sounds like an indy car.
sound,s sweet.
great turbo shot
Wonder how many miles it could be heard for? I wouldn't be complaining :)
Do you have vids of this truck in action?
Love how he starts out revving it up then gunning the shit out of it. Sweeeeet. Whos the guy talking to the driver? V-12 power!!!!
Well considering that those engines are built to work and work hard.. I would really say tahts beating on it.. Also looking at what they normally haul
whats the newest models that they put detroits in?
That's awfull hard on the rings ding dong.
Idle is the proper way.
yep the fuel rack just needs to be readjusted, which is prety tricky if you dont know how its done ( i can kinda do it,but not the 100% proper way)
detroits like this that are modified almost always surge like that.
do two strokes have engine brakes???

why is it surging when at idle?
I agree. Its his truck. I just think he was showing out a little. lol.
see ya~
is that a 2 stroke?
wait what? are you premixing a diesel 2 stroke? or are you asking if you can us 2 stroke oil in the crank case? in either case the answer is no
what kind of RPMs is it pulling. i wouldnt want to walk in front of that personally, and that little girl didnt even flinch.
Can it be fixed?
OH ME LIKEY!!!!!!!
this truck is nice!!!
Wtf?
That sombich was pullin somethin ahy?
It's built to rev high load or not...modified pulling truck..
What he should be more worried about is oil pressure... Screw the rings. If the oil is cold, and doesn't flow proper like it should it could cause the main bearings to spin. Detroits are rather notorious for spinning main bearings if the oil pressure isn't JUST right.
i would love to sit in that truck of yours again uncle nice to see this video is up
yeah i know im just saying that i wouldnt rev it that high whaen its cold for frear for blowing a seal when the oil is thick
DETROIT?! DADDY LIKE!
yes that type of motor is a two stroke
HUGE cam
is it for sale ?? i have traktor pull v8 71
that is one 2 stroke you dont want to pick fight with
Whats nest a 2 stroke that bends space time, just kidding but it sounds like it could do that
Awesome engine ... Detroit is CAT and CUMMINS killer...
Diesels run cold, it is very hard to get a diesel hot with a functioning cooling system.
i wouldnt be so sure o rev that thing that high with no load
Its not under a load so its not going to overheat!
its most likely not cold he prob ideled it for a few mins!! plus he brought her up nice and slow on the rpm:P
Gose? What is gose?
IT's not there because it's fast, per se. Actually, those things are rather slow. They're designed to pull. It's just there because it looks cool :D
well Detroits do come apart frequently lol
SWEET
but the good side is that it lubercates the underneath. :]
A 2 stroke Detroit Diesel will not run without the blower.
Indeed
And I thought I was the only one..
I agree with richardflint07 - this ain't no 6v53. :) A 12v71 at 2600 rpm will sound like a 6-cyl 4-stroker at 10,400 RPM. :)
why r u reving the piss out of it?
motor cab and fenders plz!! lol
every turbo jimmy i have seen has a little governor gallup- seems that this is rigged to exceed its 2,200 limit and that may also cause the idle gallup
LOLS! Thats awesome!!!
I want one!!!!!!!
I guess they had to tie the camera to his hand or it would have bee sucked out of his palm and gone straight through the intake on that truck :)
Think of it this way...12 cylinders x 71 cubes per = 852 with power on every turn of the crank from all 12. 2 turns of the crank gives you the benefit twice from all 12. 2 turns on a 4 stroke gives you but one punch of power each. Thats the reason to have one.. no purpose.. I want one too.
