You are my favourite channel, so glad to have found you! Thanks for the great comparison test, you've helped me make up my mind choosing between the Q2 and Q2M!
Very helpful review. I have had the M Monochrom 246 and now have the Q2M. One important difference is that the viewfinder in the Q2M is black & white, unlike (of course) the optical finder in the M. So you view and compose in B&W, which is a big plus. You have to use the screen to do that on the M, which is a different experience.
I would like to have seen b&w images from the Q2 and the monochrome in side by side, screen comparisons to determine whether the Q2 does as good (or nearly as good) a job as the monochrome in producing B&W images. , does the monochrome justifies its existence in its limited capacity? An extra $5 grand for a 2nd camera that doesn’t do THAT much better at B&W as the original, set to B&W? I don’t think so. Also, many of your comparison shots were a bit soft. I would have expected sharper/more focused...or at least the use of a tripod.
I appreciate the video. That said, I was just about to post the same comment. I want to see what the benefits are of shooting b&w on the monochrome vs. b&w on the q2 On paper the difference are clear, but I want to see real world images.
I was really hoping that you would compare out of the camera on b&w on the Q2 versus the new Q Monochrome. Thats what will be the most interesting comparison.
Hi Math, that was great, very interesting, thanks very much for sharing. One thing I noticed, in the high -ISO comparisons (50,000, 25,000) the Q2-mono of course has a lot less noise but the image also seems a bit blurry, over-smoothed, as if some in-camera processing is trying too hard to get rid of even the monochromatic noise (which if present could look as pleasant film grain). Whereas in the coloured Q2 image, there is of course much more chromatic noise, but the image is also much sharper (check the darker lines in the face of your model). Especially in the 25,000 iso image, I actually prefer the Q2 color image, because even if noisier, the chroma-noise is not so prominent and disturbing (more film-like I think) and the image still retains its relative sharpness and definition. Whereas the 25,000 iso Q2-mono image, although definitely cleaner in terms of noise, is also "smoother" as if some in-camera noise reduction filter was set on high. What do you think?
I think your observation is right. Noticed the same in the meanwhile. Maybe different camera-internal processing ... or maybe something they consider in a firmware update.
I’m coming from a Canon 5D Mk iv, I don’t use auto-focus much & I love shooting monochrome. I do enjoy color photography as well but mainly shoot macro shots of flowers & bees. I want to condense my gear down a bit & am having such a hard time deciding between the Q2 & Q2M. I know the monochrome images are going to be absolutely superb on the Q2M but so far, the color images look really good on the Q2. I would absolutely put the lowlight functions of the Q2M to use. I love nighttime photography but am limited by the Canon & have to use a tripod when it gets dark because the noise gets bad at around 12,800 & up. I’m just not sure how that compares to the Q2, if it’s about the same as the Canon then I know what to expect & will be happy with the Q2 for all my photography. When people compare the Q2 & Q2M, it looks head & shoulders better & that gives me pause.
i am beginning to shoot in B &W, and hope to move up to the leica Q2 in the not too distance future. i could not make up my mind whether i should go leica Q2 or leica Q2 monochrom. after viewing this first look at your excellent initial Q2 monochrom i am definitely leaning toward the Q2 monochrome camera. i look foreward to a more detailed review of the leica Q2 monochrom from you. thx again for your early first look......zen billings in canada
What did you end up getting? I have a Q2 and have experimented with b&w both in settings in in Lr. Thinking about adding a Q2m. Definitely less expensive than buying an SL body and lense(s).
hello...excellent work...a question...how would I get better photos...on my q2...?-- taking directly in black and white...or taking in color and changing to black and white lightrom? and finally... for black and white photos. in my q2... is it better to take it in JPG or raw...?
Hi, thank you for the video! I wanted to know if the B&W setting using the Q2 (classic) in comparison to the Q2 Mono has any distinguishable difference? Thanks once again.
Weirdly enough when you compare the Q2M/Q2 low light photos I found the mono softer than Q2, Q2 has obviously more noise but seem to retain more detail.
The mono looks way to soft. Converting the Q2 classic to mono will clear the ugliness of noise. It would be nice to see a comparison, both in mono and without the soft look
I think I watched this video now for the 3rd or 4th time. Just insane what the Q2M is capable of. Yet, is it worth it to go b&w only? The Q2 is not so bad compared to it. But I think I will go for the M. I played a while with a Nokia phone (with 5 cameras in it, two of them are monochrome) and it was here already impressive, what monochrome only is capable to achieve.
An honest review, thanks a lot. In other review I always see that the converted B&W images look the same as the pure monochrome and the only difference is the ISO. Now I see that it's not true. I'm in the situation if I should buy the M10 Monochrome or the Q2 Monochrome
Your choice between the Q2M and the M10M depends on what you want to do. If you are also interested in getting the unique feature of 4K and C4K "native" B&W video then the Q2M is the natural choice. If you go for stills only and love rangefinders, the M10M is the best choice available.
Yes, but how often do you really shoot at 25000 ? Converting the Q2 colour images will be as good as the Mono 99% of the time. And you get the choice of colour if you wish too.
Many people don’t shoot at ISO 25,000 because it’ll look like ass. But if you have a camera that excels at high ISO’s, you’ll use it at higher ISO’s which will get you pictures you otherwise wouldn’t have gotten.
Hi, thank you for this very detailed video I found it very informative! I was wondering if I could make one suggestion ? could you are someone please do a comparison of the both the monochrome and a Converted to monochrome from both cameras ?, I personally think this would be a huge selling point and to date I haven't found anyone who's done it yet. Again thanks for your excellent review.
I appreciate this review. However, I would like to take the same images and process them in PS, with sharpening (Topaz Sharpen for example). With both photos processed, what is the difference then? Is there still any difference? TIA!
Hi, I enjoyed this video although I won’t be purchasing the Mono as I already have the Q2. I was curious you did not mention the ISO/ Long Exposure limitations on the Mono, so I presume these are still there despite its a sensor built around and for the 28mm lens. I would have thought Leica would have addressed this or is there no difference between these sensors regarding heat? Thanks and regards.
Lots of differences between a Q2M and an M10M, really not the same :) Most relevant for some users is 4K and C4K video in B&W coming natively from a monochrome sensor on the Q2M. I think this is one of various unique features only the Q2M offers.
Der Gag ist doch eigentlich ein Vergleich zwischen den SW-Bildern Monochrome Q2 und der Q2. Und ja: ich würde es tatsächlich mit den OOC-JPGs sehen wollen.
Wonderful camera, great review. Not sure about the softness issue. My question for the hivemind is: What if someone wanted to shoot a video project in mono? This Q2 seems like it might be better than the original M10 monochrom in some ways (resolution, but not lenses). The PhaseOne could be ideal, I guess, but it is hard to tell from their online copy if their monochrome product can be coaxed into shooting video. I suppose I could wait for Blackmagic to introduce their own version of a camera mit aus CFA. Still! What a beautiful device this is. :-)
But for the 25.000 and especially 50.000 iso, the mono images looks so unnatural soft? Yes more grains on the Q2, but much more skin details. Why is that?
I think I am more creative with the M rather than the Q. The Q2 is reliable but I have much more fun with my M10! I'm probably going to get a monochrome camera in the future and it will be the M version .
I'm not sure why people need to see a comparison. The mono will have better low light capability because the sensor is made just for BnW, instead of a conversion after the fact. That would be my main concern when buying this camera.
I feel this 47m monochrome sensor isn't as organic as the 41m monochrome of m10 monochrome. Is there such a thing as Leica cheapened out on monochroming this sensor, not a ground up design as they claimed on m10m
From what I understand from other YTers, this sensor is different to M10M. Its specifically designed for the Q2's 28mm lens whereas the M10M is designed for all M lenses.
