I'm getting the feeling Flora will come home with a bunch of those little "We buy your [car] horse!"-cards woven into her mane if you leave her alone for just 5 minutes in a local town! :D

Hi Sandra, unlike the UK, I’ve read on horsey forums that hacking isn’t that common in the Republic of Ireland, so please take care on the roads. Flora is an exceptionally well trained horse which is why you keep getting chancers offering to buy her! Keep a watchful eye on her! I know you will, you’re very experienced.

It is so nice to hear you tell about all the wonderful fans, you and Flora have. This is how it should be - they offer you to stay for the night in a safe and nice place and it also looks like you have ok weather. All the best to you and thank you for showing us how beautiful your country is.

When my friend and I visited Ireland, a couple of guys at our B&B told us about the horse fair in Ballinasloe that was to happen that weekend. We drove all the way there to find out it was the next weekend! We have the same problem here with motorists. It’s very dangerous to ride along the road. Safe travels. .

Hi to you 2 brave travellers! What would I look forward to if not for your daily updates? I like it when Flora finds a good patch of grass. I'm glad you two have another safe place to sleep. I'm also glad it hasn't rained/snowed much on your trip so far. Until tomorrow, night night!

same where i live - my horse is quiet relaxed with traffic, but they literally run you over. had several situations where my horse jumped out of the way in the last second, because otherwise we would have been run over by car or truck. so i avoid streets where i can.

I believe that one cause of the motorist problem is that cars are so comfy and safe.
That leads to a feeling of comfyness and safety for the driver which in turn leads to being less alert.
Just a hypothesis though, i don't know if it's true.

the new generation of drivers hasn't got a clue about animals on the road in any combination be it be a rider, dog walker, loose farm animals, etc. Also goes for pedestrians and cyclists. It is infuriating! I am sure it's taught in driving school but quickly forgotten. It is sad and it's not getting better. Good luck with the way forward. Greetings from Sligo!

    • @Kirmeins

Unfortunately, it often goes both ways. Especially with cyclists and pedestrians in cities. One tends to rush on without looking, too. Which I believe is highly studip. Even if the car driver would get the blame, it's your life on the line there and traffic lights and rules go for you as well even if you're not behind a wheel. You should never assume another person will always abide to the rules or notice you in overwhelmingly full city streets or an empty country road where you just went around a bend.
Note: I'm very sure Sandra doesn't do such beginners mistakes and it really is the drivers faults in her case. Those roads looked straight and easy to see for a long ways. Any sane driver would slow down a lot while coming up to a horse or pedestrian or whatever because you can never be sure if they might not suddenly swerve. I'm just commenting on your comment here which singles out drivers.
Here in Germany, part of the problem is a serious lack of education in school. I had exactly one (!) afternoon of traffic education in my *whole* school carreer (13 years, thank you very much! Also didn't learn how to write a tax return, or a proper job application... they still expect family to do the actual life coaching). And we didn't even leave the school grounds. If I'd never gone on to get my drivers license (which is very expensive here and potentially unnecessary if you lived in a big city) I wouldn't know half the traffic signs or rules! I fully believe a pedestrian or cyclist shouldn't be on the streets or even sidewalks without being aware of how the car traffic works and what is or isn't safe for them. So many misunderstandings and dangerous situations arise from such a lack of knowledge. You can't expect human drivers to always see everything just as you can't expect pedestirans or animals to abide to traffic rules like its second nature. We all have to help and give each other more room especially in situations where no safe crossroads are available and a direct communication is in order.
I like to let the faster person go first unless they already stopped. I try to look as far ahead of me as I can when I'm in a car and drive calmly and non-aggressive. The latter means I also try to not let myself get stressed behind a wheel (or handlebar or on foot) and plan to need 15-20 % more time to arrive at my destination than experience suggests so I won't need to rush after an unexpected problem occured. Unfortunatly, people often feel like time spend waiting is lost lifetime. Which is probably a deeper problem of the modern societies but that is a different discussion altogether.
All in all: Live and let live. Expect others to make mistakes or be inconsiderate and to put themselves, you or both in serious danger. Try to be aware of such eventualities and keep a clear head and a calm demeanor.

      @@Kirmeins
      G'day,
So, it all boils down to
      "Slow DOWN !",
      &
      "Pay attention...",
      &
      "Look where YOU are going..."
Here in Oz, Pedestrisns are officially urged, if they have to walk on the edge of the Road, to walk on the "wrong" side of that road ; so that they can see all the approaching Traffic which will be passing closest to them - rather than having a constant series of "surPRISE !" terrifying encounters, all arriving, unseen, from behind.
I dunno about the "Legalities" of doing it that way with Horses and Bicycles...(?) ; but the principle seems sound enough.
I might try it on the Highway, with my eBike, and see if I get arrested for trying to stay alive (!).
      Such is life,
      Have a good one...
      Stay safe.
      ;-p
      Ciao !

    • @Kirmeins
      @Kirmeins 2 года назад

@@WarblesOnALot Oh dear. Yeah, my mom thaught me that rule as a kid for whenever there was no side walk. But it came with "if you see a car you then stand to the side of the road and wait until it is passed!". That isn't as easy with a horse or your eBike as it is as a pedestrian! You would instead create a *higher risk* for yourself and others because since you wouldn't be going in the same direction you might both have to come to a complete stop if the other side of the road is busy and the person coming towards you cannot give you space! *DO NOT DO THAT!*
Depending on how busy the road is (and a Highway would be seriously busy) forcing the traffic flow to stop may well lead to serious pileup accidents because the car following the one coming towards you may not be able to see you fast enough (or at all) or realise this is a reason to come to a full stop before it's to late to do so! So *if you cannot leave the road at a seconds notice* every time someone else comes around *do not ever try to go against traffic flow* - that's a recipe for disaster if there ever was one!
As for leagalities: In Germany big highways may only be used if your vehilce can go at least 60 kmh. So not even a slow farm tractor would be allowed there let alone a horse, an eBike or (actually happened) an old miss with her mobile chair using the empty hard shoulder...

      G'day,
      Thanks.
I wasn't suggesting it for Germany, or eBikes in Oz, but for these overgrown Goat-Tracks in Leprechaun Land, where the following Traffic has already badly frightened the both of them.
You don't have to like my suggestion mate ; just(ifiably ?) go and find a Road Sign proclaiming that,
      "befhel ist BEFHEL !!!"
and you can salute it while clicking your Heels in unblinking unthinking obedience to Authority.
I understand Germans are pretty big on Regimentation, with something of a reputation for obediently dying in neat straight lines.
      Cultural Differences, olde Bean.
Irish and Australians are taught to think for ourselves ; and to do whatever is most likely to yield the best result.
And being able to see the speeding Lunatic approaching is a LOT more survivable than blindly plodding along and hoping not to be run down by surprise.
I think you are wildly wrong.
      Let's agree to differ.
      Such is life.
      Have a good one...
