Great video, Joshua. I love my Lee filter system and need to get back to more landscapes again. I focus mostly on birds. Are you on Instagram? Look me up mtamemory My biggest challenge is just getting to the coast. I live 4 hours away but I hope to get there soon. Thanks again.
Hi Josh, Yes, I spend 90% of my photography and videography on the coast and these are great tips you give here for those new to this type of scene. Another thing, which I'm sure you may have experienced, is the need to watch the state of the tide. I've been almost caught by rising tide in areas which would have required a swim to get back to where I came from! ;)
Thanks, Josh. Great tips, as always! I remember your old video featuring your wipeout on the rock and have definitely been in a similar situation with splashes hitting the camera, or drenching me or having to grab the camera and bail. I think the biggest technical struggle shooting seascapes is the salt spray and photobombers. lol. Composition is usually just a matter of trying different things to see what works and can usually be easily changed. I need to get some of those paper wipes, as the micro fiber towels and lens cloths don't remove the salt water too well. I've also found that some filters that have the hydrophobic coating, tend to wipe a bit cleaner. And as always, safety is very important by reading the behavior and changes in the ocean, looking up the tides, surf and weather to make sure your don't put yourself in an unsafe situation. -Cheers
I will be on the Oregon Coast next week for my first attempt at serious seascape photos. Figuring out where to go that is accessible for me is one challenge. I am old, overweight and not strong. Nor do I like being cold. I told me son this trip will be the big reveal on what is the biggest driver; my adversion to being cold or my hunger for great photographs!
This is how a tutorial should be done. Excellent information with illustrative examples, wrapped up with great production values with that typical Joshua sense of humour. Thank you!
Oh I like this guy! Very clear, extremely practical, and well organized. He explains things very clearly, not just what to do with some formula, but with enough understanding to be able to actually implement it. It's great that he shows how each effect works with examples with and without the effect from the same scene and point of view. His phrase for what you want out of a photograph-- "dynamic, engaging, and practical"--applies as well to his tutorials. Thank you.
Thank you! I'm going to Newfoundland and am going to try my hand at seascape photography for the first time. This information is very helpful; more helpful than many of the other videos I have already suffered through. lol
Joshua, I feel this was one of your best videos in some time. Your focus on technique instruction was something that drew me to subscribe to your channel some time ago. Your skills as an educator are your strong point. I feel you have gotten away from that to some degree with recent video content. This video was extremely informative. You explain things thoroughly with a degree of humor which makes your vids entertaining. Great job and thank you. After watching this video, I feel like finding a coast somewhere to apply your teachings. Thanks for the inspiration.
Hey Bob, thanks so much. Glad this video resonated. TBH, it's a challenge to continuously put out pure education and teaching videos. That's why I've been experimenting with some different videos recently. I want to share more inspiration and BTS as well, as opposed to solely education.
The safety tips can't be emphasized enough. Paying attention to the tide table should be added. About a year ago, I was shooting on the Oregon Coast, not aware of when the tide was coming in. As the day progressed and I had walked around a rocky bend, I remember thinking: "This could be a sketchy spot to be if a big wave comes in." Well, as I was observing the waves coming in as time went on, I noticed they were definitely coming in deeper. I made it out all right, but it was a slow process of climbing to the next rock, waiting for waves to recede as I looked for the next safe spot to step. What felt like half an hour may only have been ten minutes to get back to safety. I beat myself up for putting myself in that situation the rest of the day and won't forget that lesson. (And now I also keep a towel and a fresh, dry pair of socks in my car kit!)
Joshua, your video is excellent! After watching about a thousand photography videos, this one instantly placed number 1! There is one other vlogger that is worthy of equal status, but that does not diminish this at all. Excellent tips that are fresh and delivered clearly and quickly! Thank you so very much.
Great tips!! Went out today and wondered why my focus on 15sec shots were blurry! Now I know, didn’t put it on manual focus after auto focusing!! Thanks a bunch!!
Awesome video Josh! I consider myself a pretty decent seascape photographer however I still picked up a few tips and got inspired to shoot at the coast ASAP!! 😁
just love these very few channels that I just click to see the new video, press the Like button, sit back, relax and enjoy the next 10-15 min. Love your work Joshua!
This is a topic that's been done to death, but you seemed to be able to breathe some new life into it. Concise and thorough, two of my favorite things (for when dogs bite or bees sting). I also really liked the fact that I recognized the beaches you were shooting from.
Thanks, Ralph! Normally I wear muck boots. XtraTuffs, specifically. The big problem with them is if water gets over the top of the boot. So for my next coastal trip I am going to try out a pair of neoprene canyoneering shoes.
Great video and excelent advise, thanks. I would ad: use your histogram to check if you have the details you want and one more thing: have bare feat or use water shoes and maybe also bare legs to be more comfortable in the waves close to shore.
Funny how priorities get skewed. When in the surf taking photographs, I find myself not worried about what the next wave will do to me, but instead, what will it do to my camera. Stupid is as stupid does 😬.
Hey man! I forgot how much I loved your channel. I've recently took a break from photography as I kept getting myself down about trying to get a great image and falling short everytime and then entering some into competitions and the images just getting pulled apart, it was brutal. Then a batch of the corona virus just left me floored and not doing any photography I'm getting back Into it now and wanted to watch a few videos (first in a long time) and yours popped up. I love your videos man, they really help me out and give me confidence again. I look forward to seeing the rest of your work but looks like I've got alot to catch up on! Take care Nathan
Thank you for 6 tips photographing Seascapes! I’m in Dahican Beach Mati City Davao Oriental Philippines 🇵🇭 staying at a resort on the beach! Thank you, Linda
Great video, Josh. I just bought my first carbon fiber tripod last year and have to admit that I'm a bit reluctant to push it deep into the sand like you recommend. Any suggestions on cleaning/maintenance after sand and saltwater exposure that have kept your tripods in good working order?
I can my tripods afterward by fully extending the legs and giving them a thorough rinse in the shower. I also switched over from an enclosed ballhead to an open design from Acratech because it's 10x easier to keep clean and free from corrosion.
Hello Joshua, do you have any classes for classes like this? I''ve only use my phone to take all pictures when travelling but i like to branch in seascapes and landscapes photography. Thanks Nat
hes right about ndgrads vs software. adobe ps costs a monthly fee, yet lee filters are also very expensive, we're talking hundreds of usd here. choose your poison
Josh, great tutorial, thanks for sharing! You mentioned using paper wipes instead of microfiber, but everything that I read about these is that they can scratch my lenses and filters. Am I missing something?
Great tips Joshua! Have fun in Death Valley! Wish I could have made it this year. Maybe next. Edit: Just found out that Out of Death Valley isn't happening until 2022. Maybe I can make that one.
Great video Joshua. I especially liked where you state to use auto focus and then switch to manual, great tip. By the way, those falls look a lot like Mossbrae Falls 😊
Great tips, however I've never had a problem with bracketing. I simply take one darker sky frame when the sky looks best then add that to my preferred foreground using masks in photoshop.
Have you tried seascape photography? What are your biggest challenges?
Great video, Joshua. I love my Lee filter system and need to get back to more landscapes again. I focus mostly on birds. Are you on Instagram? Look me up mtamemory

I wish I could download data on photography from your brain.

These were such excellent tips that are so basic and easy to make happen - yet make an incredible amount of sense. Great post man.
Awesome video! You nailed all the challenges of seascape photography!
Great info!!! TY!!!
Great tips!! Went out today and wondered why my focus on 15sec shots were blurry! Now I know, didn’t put it on manual focus after auto focusing!! Thanks a bunch!!

That's awesome to hear, Carrie!
Love this one man! Awesome seeing you slaying the local zones. 🙌🙌🙌
Gotta love that section of the coast.
Thanks for a great demo lesson and tips.... you mentioned paper wipes vs micro cloth. Any link?
Thanks ..
Really enjoyed this! Thanks!
So glad!
Thank you, Joshua!
Thank you for watching!
just love these very few channels that I just click to see the new video, press the Like button, sit back, relax and enjoy the next 10-15 min. Love your work Joshua!
Thank you so much 😀
Great Vlog Josh, especially #6 switching from auto focus to manual, makes perfect sense but as a beginner it would be very easy to overlook 👍🌊
Glad it was helpful! Yeah, I've screwed that one up MANY times. :)

I also really liked the fact that I recognized the beaches you were shooting from.
Excellent video, well organized and to the point. When you are standing in the water, what's on your feet? Do you use overshoes, Muck boots?
Thanks, Ralph! Normally I wear muck boots. XtraTuffs, specifically. The big problem with them is if water gets over the top of the boot. So for my next coastal trip I am going to try out a pair of neoprene canyoneering shoes.

Great video man. Yeah... Never cool getting destroyed by wave like Bodhi in point break. 🤣🤣
Probably the best example of tutorial i have ever seen, lovely stuff Joshua
Hey Josh, what are the paper lens wipes that you mention in the video? Thanks
In the words of some RUclipsr (and Bill as well as Ted) “Most Excellent!”
Funny how priorities get skewed. When in the surf taking photographs, I find myself not worried about what the next wave will do to me, but instead, what will it do to my camera. Stupid is as stupid does 😬.
Can you bracket with nd filters?

Been shooting the coast in Australia for some years now.

Love your style of Vlog Joshua, you sure make it look easy! Your sea scape's are epic and a real inspiration.

Great video, love seascapes! Question, what brand 'paper lens wipes' are you using?
Thanks, Lance. Those are Kimwipes.
You see I decided Sea album to my Flickr page.Do you have a Flickr page?
Thanks for the tips...I will try some of them when I get back to the coast
Heading out next week to shoot some beach images, I will put your tips to good use. Thanks so much

Yes, that's the magic moment. :)
Awesome vid thanks for the tips
Slap your camera on a tripod. 😋✍🏾
Josh, great tutorial, thanks for sharing! You mentioned using paper wipes instead of microfiber, but everything that I read about these is that they can scratch my lenses and filters. Am I missing something?
great video Joshua, I will be going to Puerto Rico soon and will be using these techniques, you made the content so easy to understand.
Josh, how do you avoid a sky being overexposed when using a long shutter speed? Is that what the ND filter helps with?
Thanks Josh. In Tasmania on holiday now and having fun with seascape photography!
Amazing video!!! Do you have a video on how you edit your seascape photos?
Thnk u very much
Wonderful techniques..love it ...thank you
Amazing Content
Great tips Joshua!
Have fun in Death Valley! Wish I could have made it this year. Maybe next.
Edit: Just found out that Out of Death Valley isn't happening until 2022. Maybe I can make that one.
Fingers crossed we can all make Death Valley 2022!
Thanks for sharing
One stop video for all the seascapes long exposure needs.🙏🏼
Et voilà mes amis ! haha nicely placed at the end. Great videos and content :)
Very helpful!
Brill 👍🏻
Very informative. Thanks for posting and sharing your knowledge.
My pleasure!
Need some sea and bright weather in January 😎
I would have said the beach is the best place to never use a grad. The horizon is level so blending two shots one for the sky one for the sea is ez.
some great advice Thanks
You bet!
Paper wipes? I hope you are not talking about paper towels?
I imagine he's talking about something like Kimtech Kimwipes.
Yep, Kimwipes!
Great video Joshua. I especially liked where you state to use auto focus and then switch to manual, great tip. By the way, those falls look a lot like Mossbrae Falls 😊
Haha thank you!
Best advise yet. Thank you
Great vid Joshua, really informative and useful, can’t wait to try out all ur tips.
Have fun!
Fantastic tips! I really appreciate it! I used your tips when I shot my first seascape!
Booyah!! Hope it came out great. :)
As always great video Joshua. Hey see you won the photo pillars award for best photograph also😁
Yes! Thank you!
Always good stuff, JC!! Thanks
My pleasure!!
Great advices. Thank you =)
You're so welcome!
Love this. Thank you.
You are so welcome!
Wow this is great advice thanks man
Happy to help!
Awesome tips as usual mate.
I always rinse the tripod in tap water after a trip to the surf 😉👍
Now THAT is a great tip. Definitely gotta add that to my next seascapes video.
@@JoshuaCrippsPhotography Cheers mate. Have a great and prosperous 2021 🥃
Great set of photographs
Thank you. Cheers
Great tips, however I've never had a problem with bracketing. I simply take one darker sky frame when the sky looks best then add that to my preferred foreground using masks in photoshop.

@@JoshuaCrippsPhotography I live close to the sea, but it lack beautiful rocks :(
