I have the non lighted version of those plastic seed starting trays with the green bottoms and have used them since 2021. Very good product for the price! My trick for knowing when to water is the same as knowing when a cake is done. Insert a toothpick close to edge (to not damage roots). If crumbs of dirt come up, no water needed. Clean pick….need water. Don’t do this daily! But for newbies trying to learn when to water it’s a cheap alternative to a water meter.
I have started onions, snap dragons, delphiniums, peppers and lavender. I use T5's and LED's - I have a little grow room off the back of my little house. One section has crap insulation so it stays rather cool. I put the delphiniums there and have good success with germination. Delphiniums are my favourite flower but I find they only last about three to four years so I start them every other year. Keep up the good work - really enjoy your content. Merci!
You addressed a couple things that I think were causing me issues, so thank you for that. I have been doing seeds for 3 years now in a more casual way, but this year I came across some great deals on heating mats, a second light, and an 8x8 greenhouse. Sounds strange, but the greenhouse will be used indoors to protect my plants from the cats, until it can be used outdoors
@GardeningInCanada what they don't eat, they stomp! One pepper plant survived it once and grew really wonky, and ended up being the best producer that year 😆
I use the larger soil blocker for seed starting. It gives them room to grow without uppotting. You can also just press soil into balls to get a larger soil block without buying the $150 blocker.
I’ve been seeded starting for this is my fourth year since 2020 and each year obviously has gotten better as I’ve learned what’s best for me. I live in a zone for 4B and I love all kinds this year for Christmas. I got soil blocks I’m so excited to start seeds. I’ve started my Lisianthus I’m growing some lettuce and basil in house so I can have that available to eat and cook with!!😁
I have some seeds i germinate by a "float method" and want to then plant in a soil block. You mention using soil blocks for seeds - if I'm planting seeds into soil blocks after they germinate would you recommend still saturating the blocks when I plant the germinated seeds or is that too wet?
thank you again learned a few more things - I have all my old Hungarian and siracha pepper and tomato planters sitting in the yard. untouched since last harvest. what would be the best way to go about recycling and regrowing? might be a video idea.
Yogurt cups are the best, and my opinion is the plastic lasts longer than the plastic in purchased seed trays or seed starting plastic cups. You just need a cordless drill, punch, or soldering iron to make drainage holes. Reduce, RE-USE, then years later, Recycle.
Hi Ashley....... I have seed starter that's now 3 yrs old. Do I need to refresh that soil and if so, what do I add to it? Or do i need to buy new seed started? Thank you, I've learned so much from ur videos
Not really related to this video, but anyone have advice for when to start blacktail watermelon and table king acorn squash? Ive never grown these before. Im in zone 4b - last frost date is usually around 1st week of june.

Yes! I’m so impressed with them 😅
I appreciate that you cover both what to do and, most importantly, why. Paints a good picture in my brain.

So glad I watched. I have been removing the cloches a bit early off my seedlings. 👍

I move my plant trays up on a couple books to get them close to the light.

Wonderful! Love the indoor growing idea
I also winter sow all the perennials!!😊
I truly think if I had lights, I would have much better luck as I have been just using my window ! Now to invest in lights lol
That’s pretty awesome that you were able to get away with just windows for a while!
I found my light sets on kijiji. Good deals
Getting some started today. Have others cold stratifying in the fridge. So many seeds =anxiety for me. 😂 Thank you for the free guide! 💚🌱🇨🇦

I love your channel. And you're gorgeous!
Thank you so much!!
Ashley, is there a minimum cell for tomatoes? I have tiny 1.5in cells (72 per tray), is it ok to start tomatoes and peppers in those?

Didn’t see Heating Mat covered, Do you remove or turn heating mat off once seed germinates/true leaf sprouts or when 3-4 true leafs sprouts?
Do you have a link for the light meter you helped create?

@@GardeningInCanada Awesome thank you!
With our current very weird winter, would you still start seeds based on the historic last frost date, or would you adjust anything?

❤❤❤
