Honestly, I do think it's disingenuous to say that no one prefers the Tim Burton movie since nowadays, there's a growing number of people who do prefer that version over the original. Me personally, I really liked the original movie, but upon rewatching it, there were some issues that I found, like some filler in the first act where there are entire scenes dedicated to characters that play no other roles in the story, most of the original songs are pointless or muddled by actors who couldn't sing (at least at the time, idk about now, and let me make it clear that I love both Candyman and Pure Imagination), and the fact that we never see the other kids leave the factory raises some questions. Meanwhile, I watched the Tim Burton adaptation, and I found that not only did it fix the issues that I had with the original (no filler, the only songs are the ones from the book, and we actually see the kids again), but it improved what I already loved about the original movie. Also, to me it never felt like they were rushing to get to Johnny Depp, but more like we got to him faster because all of the fluff from the original was removed and they only focused on the five kids (as they honestly should). I can give a more thorough explanation as a reply if anyone wants it, but this comment is already very long and there's more I wanted to go over.
I'm surprised this was never brought up, but I do think that it's important to mention that Roald Dahl actually had a pretty bad time working on the 1971 film. He was constantly shunted out of making creative decision despite the fact that it was his book, he was credited for a screenplay that was written behind his back, and he didn't even get his choice for Willy Wonka. That's why Felicity Dahl (Roald's widow) was so strict during the production of the Tim Burton movie, and the only changes from the source material were the ones that got the thumbs up from her, and I think it ultimately led to a more faithful adaptation, even down to directly quoting lines and taking the lyrics of the Oompa Loompa songs straight from the original novel.
I can see why some people might not like the Tim Burton movie, but it's one of my favorite movies.
TL:DR I respect your opinion, but I respectfully disagree.

I prefer the Tim Burton version for many of the reasons you listed, as it involved those close to Dahl to make a faithful adaptation he'd like, while also taking more risks and interesting creative choices, all while the visuals still hold up compared to the original.

The 2005 version will always be my favorite as I grew up with it. But I will add, the 2005 film is the closest to the books\. Tim worked closely in collaboration with Dahl's wife who loved the film and noted that her husband would have as well. After the 1971 film Rahl Dahl was very angry with the film as it strayed so far from the source material so much so that he never wanted another adaptation made while he was alive.

While there are elements I prefer in the 1971 film, overall I think the 2005 version works much better as a movie. It sticks closer to the book, feels more tightly paced despite a longer runtime, and presents a fantastical world closer to what is depicted in the novel, though I could do without the subplot regarding Wonka's relationship with his father. The 1971 version has better songs and probably the better writing of the two, but it's got a lot of filler that wasn't in the book and could be cut out. Haven't seen Wonka yet, but planning to go do so in the next week or so.

I prefer 'Charlie' over 'Willy Wonka.' By a lot, actually. It's more imaginative, closer to the book, and less of a musical (Cheer up, Charlie is insufferable). The original film upset Roald Dahl so badly he refused the studio the film rights to Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator. The new film was made to honor the book. And yet, given all that info, people still prefer the original just because of nostalgia. I can't speak for everyone, but for me, I pick 'Charlie' over the original everyday. I guess it's just too strange and unusual for some. But I guess, I myself am, strange and unusual.

Timothèe Chalamet is adorable! He is literally the cutest little angel ever and I recently developed a crush on him. By the way, I'm currently writing a novel about Willy Wonka's daughter, Hillary. It's called Little Wonka. Fun fact: Willy Wonka's wife's name is Ava. And when I write Willy Wonka in this book about this thirteen-year-old girl who's half Lynn Loud Jr. athlete (If you know about The Loud House, you'll know what I'm talking about) and half chocolatier (takes after her daddy and mama, Ava), I see Timothèe Chalamet in this version. In the book after an introduction with Willy marrying Ava and Ava becoming pregnant with Hillary then giving birth to Hillary after nine months, the novel really starts when Hillary meets fourteen year old Sir Patrick Roswell Larkin. He's the youngest son of Pepperidge Larkin and the younger brother of Rocky Larkin. According to prophecy, Hillary is to save London from an evil threat. Turns out Pepperidge is the threat and Rocky is also a threat. They turn Yub Yub, Willy's trusted Oompa Loompa and Hillary's uncle since before she was born who speaks with a British accent and also speaks Loompanese, which is actually Ewok language, into an evil version and Pepperidge clones Patrick into evil clones and Hillary had to shoot them but ends up actually shooting Patrick (the real one). Her tears heal him, Willy is proud of his daughter, Hillary and Patrick share their first kiss, they end up together at the end, and Pepperidge and Rocky are arrested and they turn into the famous Roald Dahl characters, Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker.

The original film had the impact in establishing what a wonka film "should" be, since it was the only one. So, when the newer one differed, people were naturally more cynical. If Burton's had come out first, the opposite would've happened. Although, people can always choose which they prefer, the original version had the advantage of establishing the status quo.

I haven’t seen Wonka, but love the 1971 film. For a film that needs effects, most of the effects have aged like milk. But the script is quotable and sharp, even dark at times. And the performances are great, with Gene giving one for the ages.

I totally agree with your rank sequence and loved both Gene Wilder’s “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” and the prequel “Wonka”. Watch both musicals, take the whole family to “Wonka” (all ages), and enjoy!!!
In the prequel, Timothée Chalamet picks up on all of the Gene Wilder mannerisms and energy to give a excellent performance. I especially loved the Oompa Loompa with Hugh Grant's voice and face. This prequel Wonka gets to the heart of why he started the factory and brought in the Oompa Loompas in the first place. The prequel theme is about the importance of holding onto our dreams, delightful creative wonder of candy, and the extreme importance of mothers. My favorite quote of the movie…
"It’s not the chocolate that matters; it’s the people you share it with."
    ~ Momma Wonka

Nice to hear your ranking on the film series. As a big Willy Wonka fan, my ranking of the films currently goes:
    1. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (yeah, fight me)
    2. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
    3. Wonka
    4. And in the last place, by a massive margin, Tom and Jerry Willy Wonka.
The top 3 I love, while we don't talk about the 4th. Anyways, its always nice to hear your insight. And I appreciate that you didn't call Tim Burton's version a "remake" either. 0:23, I would rank the Burton version with Johnny Depp on the bottom because in the books Willy Wonka invites both Charlie and his family to join him at the factory and personally pulls Charlie’s grandparents bed with them in it into the Great Glass Elevator so that Charlie can be with his family (and does all that without any hesitation so Willy Wonka hating family to the point of giving Charlie an ultimatum to choose between them and the factory was completely out of character for him. And the movie gave Willy Wonka an elaborate origin story designed entirely to explain why he hates family even though it was a trait he never had in the book. And it made it so that his real motivation for everything was spite and juvenile rebellion. That isn’t Willy Wonka. It’s just not. Despite some deviations from the source material at least the 1971 movie got Willy Wonka right

I like the Tim Burton movie. Better effects. More straightforward adaptation of Dahl. A unique original portrayal of Wonka by Depp. Freddie Highmore outdoes Peter Ostrum, but David Kelly fades a bit next to Jack Albertson. But, David Kelly is overall more appealing than Jack Albertson in the Grandpa Joe role. Gentler and even seems kinder than Albertson. I can’t get behind the subplot in Charlie And The Chocolate Factory involving Wilbur Wonka, Willy’s Dad the dentist. It seems like they were going for conflict and irony, but it comes off forced and cheesy.

I've only watched the Tim Burton and Wonka version and I don't think the Tim Barton version is that bad, but I don't think this movie will be wanted for adults to watch. It's true that it's creepy and downright weird at times, but most of all it's simple for older audiences. Every kid has some bad character trait for which he or she is punished, and Charlie is sweet and perfect to a fault, which really annoyed me. And Depp himself as Wonka is okay, but in my opinion it's a much less successful version of the Hatter from Alice in Wonderland. Wonka, however, is also a simple film, but made in such a way that children, teenagers and adults will have great fun. I've always had mixed feelings about Chalamet, but here he captured Wonka's charm and energy perfectly. And these colorful supporting characters, Hugh Grant and great songs!

I read the book and Johnny Depp's Willy Wonka is nothing like the original character. Let Dahl's family say what they want, but I highly doubt he would have liked Depp's creation between Michael Jackson and Marilyn Manson. Burton has his own original style that I quite like in small doses, but I was quite bored with his version, it was so clunky. Even the original film isn't perfect, but Wilder captured the best glimpses of Wonka's mischievous character in it. On the other hand, I wouldn't even compare the new Wonka. That movie goes its own way, it doesn't even have the same story, it's more naive, but at the same time very magical. It's the perfect Christmas family movie.

I think sticking close to the books is irrelevant when telling a story from a theatrical medium so even though 2005 is more faithful to the source material the 1971 willy wonka works better as a theatrical adaptation.
In the first act of 1971 you develope a connection and emotional bond to the character of charlie, you feel his heart break when he doesnt find the ticket for example. The 1971 charlie has a much more. impactful character arc where as the 2005 charlie is forgetable and might as well not be there.
Depps portrayal of wonka comes across as too creepy because he lacks the childlike whimsicle charm that both Wilder and Timothee portray

I agree with you for the most part. I deeply dislike Depp’s choices for playing Willy Wonka (and I love Johnny Depp as an actor)! I do like that the look of Wonka’s factory and the Oompa Loompa’s songs are all pulled right from Roald Dahl’s book, which I love! I also love Grandpa Joe in this version more than 1971 Grandpa Joe.
    *2: Wonka (2023)
I really enjoyed this version of Wonka! The aesthetics were lovely to see and Timothée Chalamet was delightful as a younger Willy Wonka! I do think the plot and pacing could have been better and it would have been much better as a stand-alone Wonka movie instead of trying to do its own thing while also being a prequel to the 1971 movie.
*1: Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971)
I really love this movie so much! Everything about it is utterly delightful and memorable! Gene Wilder was perfect as Willy Wonka (I found him much closer to book!Wonka than Depp’s version of Willy Wonka ever was)! The only thing I dislike about this movie is Grandpa Joe.

I can't stand the Burton one but it's been famously known that Roald Dahl hated the 1971 one. But for most of us, Wilder was more charming as Wonka than Depp. Add all the classic songs. Depp said he portrayed Wonka like a game show host. His big smile creeps me out. Was also not a fan of the Oompa Loompas using the same actor (Deep Roy) in the 2005 one.
The Roald Dahl book was my favorite book as a child when I read it during the 5th grade recommended by one of my classmates and it remains one of my favorite books as the story feels so timeless. I haven't seen the Wonka prequel but I'm sure the 1971 one will never be topped. It's actually one of my all-time favorite musicals. Wonka 2023 is said to work as a great companion piece for it like The Godfather Part II is to Part I and Priscilla (2023) can be to Elvis (2022).

Lol that Tom and Jerry one 😆. Don't care for the Tim Burton version at all, the original will always top the bill. That frantic GOOD DAY SIR frightened the heck out of me when I was little

I'm not sure if i really agree with your "ridiculous" assesment of the New Wonka. There were many very serious moments and storylines that genuinely made you feel. Noodles Dream, Noodles reuniting with her mother, Slugworth was a pretty monstrous villian, etc.

Conspiculously left out one of the live-action Wonkas on the thumbnail. I wonder who will be last...
