It is a remarkable piece of television history. I think it’s small but loyal following will help it to become a cult classic, and in ten years or so, there will be Mr Robot-con events. S4E7 is one of the single best episodes in the history of television. For me personally, I have never had such an emotional and visceral reaction, to fiction on a screen. Not gonna lie, it fucked me up. I was a wreck after watching it, wanting to vomit, and literally started crying days later, just thinking about it. I think its very modest viewer base, has to do with the subject matter, which involves a lot of things that people don’t like to think or talk about. I don’t know if I can go back and watch S4E7 again, not any time soon at the very least.
when the entire world was talking about Sherlock.. they couldnt make me watch it when the entire world was intoxicated about Game of thrones.. they couldnt make me watch it but mr robot changed me. thank you sam esmail , your tv show Mr Robot changed the fundamental core of my being
I couldn't fully put my finger on why I connected with Elliot so much. I suffer from social anxiety and get frustrated at myself because of it, just like Elliot does as you pointed out. Thanks for this video.
i connect to elliot way more than i should. hes a perfect portrayal of loneliness coupled with anxiety. i want to see people, but im afraid. and it hurts. a lot. the scene of him crying in s1e1 gets more real every time i see it. OOF THIS SHOW IS TOO GOOD
An astonishing look in the post-modern human condition. I see MR ROBOT as a work about loneliness, isolation, and about the extreme alienation that we, in the overall capitalist society, suffer nowadays - not only from one-another, but even from ourselves. This one is my favorite series.
someone with authority, please nominate this guy for a noble prize under literature or peace section. he has great introspective quality of the human psyche and is able to translate it into words for most of us dense humans to understand.
really? like a hundred ppl on the subreddit have explained what this guy did. I'm not saying he video didn't take a lot of work, but good gob is the subject matter repeated to death allover the internet
Reminds me of how Ismail says he thinks plot doesn't matter, it's about tone. In other words, if you take time to connect the audience to human vulnerability and intention, the themes land, and that strikes the audience in the heart far more than fancy plotting.
Preach!! I heard some people were frustrated with this show because the plot wasn't satisfying enough, but this show has never been about the plot for me. It's about the expression of humanity
Depression is just a response to Albert's Camus "Absurd" Void... Depressed people are typically "intellectuals", but intellectuals are not typically depressed.' I am quite intellectually self-aware, and I am not depressed. Self-aware as in epistemologically humble, and aware that truly know nothing outside of tendicies in our meaningless bubble of existance
I’ll be honest Elliot’s story in Mr. Robot is put in so well and that is why a lot of people who watch the show can actually connect to Elliot in a way that makes them feel like they are not alone in this world and that is one of the things that movies, documentaries and seasons miss when making the perfect show, thankyou for having the time to read my comment and just remember in this world you are not alone ❤️🌍
Anxiety consumes you up slowly. It redlines your whole mind and body all the time until the point you get so exhausted you just pass out. And when you got some sleep and try to recover, you can literally feel it building up again inside you. You start to pick up bad habits that are self destructive, because only the small shots of happiness remains when you are scared of your own future and cant plan ahead for more than a day. Because you know it will build up again tomorrow. And after that. And after that. Naturally the depression sets in, since you feel hopeless. In the meantime your friends and family is desperately trying to help you by saying all the wrong things. That you should try doing some sports and yoga, and eat more vegetables. And you sit there with a heartrate of 140, your vision is closing in because you need to escape, to run home and cry the pointless tears of anxiety. If you live like that, reach out for professional help, let go of the wheel and do the things they tell you to do. At first it wont help, but that doesnt matter, if your life is pure misery you have nothing to lose. Reach out for help and get better. It might take time and a lot of work, but its possible. I did it and it was the best decision of my life. Fuck, im actually happy again.
It is so weird to see this, (again) now. I stumbled on Ryan's channel & noticed all of the "Hoyever" comments. It was his breakdown of "Sinister" that made me fall in love with the channel though, bc horror terrifies me, and Ryan absolutely deconstructed my fears in 10 minutes. I loved this show. 4x7 needed a trigger warning and I hated the ending. But, damn. One of my new favorite RUclipsrs addressed one of my favorite shows back before everyone was doing it. Amazing.
Don’t just watch this video... watch it on a routine, mine is after sweating my nuts off at the gym I walk home whilst listening to this, too cool me down, I do this every time and know pretty much word for word, this is my best mr robot analysis ever! Thank you
I don't relate to Elliot at all, I've never experienced anxiety or depression, I'm a confident optimistic extrovert, basically the complete opposite. However I think it's because he's so different from me that I find him compelling, I know people who struggle with the same issues, so it helps me to understand them better.
I came to this show because it had realistic hacking methods. I always wanted a show that did this, not how fast you can type to get into IP addresses. I came out of the show, undoubtedly happy that the show relates with me. The show relates to me with Mental illness and a dark and cynical view of the world. As much as I love this show, every person who have watched Mr Robot in my friend group has depression. I'm not saying this as a bad thing, Mr Robot is just very relatable to people with Depression and Social Anxiety. You earned a sub from me Ryan, the 28 days Later review was 10/10
This is a very good video. :D Something I want to add: Tyrell isn't just afraid that Elliot will see him as "weak." He genuinely wants to impress Elliot because he's obsessed with him.
I suffer from social anxiety too, so that's probably why I'm attracted to this show so much. It really captured the feeling of what it's like to simultaneously be disconnected from society and at the same time despising the same society you want to be a part of. It's a shame that season 2 became more focused on Elliot's hallucinations and half-baked plot twists than showing what mental disorders and human emotions are like. Great video as always.
Those "half-baked" plot twists were entirely about Elliot's mind working with and against itself to manage its mental illness. It wasn't about the twist; it was about how Elliot's psyche was dealing with itself and its propensity to self-harm. Elliot's brain created a literal lock down to try to manage and control the damage it was doing. However, Elliot came to realize that self-treatment doesn't work. Esmail created the visual environment of Elliot's mind and how it was dealing with delusions. I didn't find season 2 to be half-baked or superficial at all. If anything, it provided the needed context and examination of Elliot's deteriorating mental state.
1st Up you seem a bit too attached to this thing they call life, this might be a show to you.. but it opens a field for a train of thought i never had experienced before, an accurate statement on how the government and the world are currently and how bad they could get with technology, also.. I’m a fan of the show so naturally I’m attached to it. You played yourself
Nobody should fight with their mr robot you are right it was just waste of time

omg, Ryan. thats a awesome analysis. thanks for putting all of my thoughts abaout #MrRobot and what it all means in my head in one video. i wanna see more scenes between Elliot and krista next season. i like the tension around them and their talks. feels genuine.
I've never watched the show but now I think I might. Your description of how Elliot feels and is, the way he acts and thinks and reacts, it all reminds me of my way on life. How I get infuriated by the idea of having to work in something I don't want, waste 1/3 of my day, just to live in a society I never asked to be born in. The loneliness that you end up achieving when you can't accept the enviroment you live in is trully painful and most people never understand. Thanks for showing me more of myself than I ever achieved to know in the past 24 years.
This guy makes sense to me, i used to be afraid of meeting new people or having extended conversations, although its much better now this really hits home
While Elliot is disgusted that society will seemingly do anything to ignore the ugliness of reality, he himself has carefully constructed an alternate reality in order to ignore the ugliness in his life. While Elliot is disgusted how Evil Corp is exploiting the weaknesses of consumers, he himself exploits the weaknesses he finds in others, through hacking them. THIS is the crux of the show. Our mentally ill hero, is a total hypocrite. A couple of times during the show, other characters call him out on it. His response is sort of a, “yeah....BUT....” S4E7.....was the best episode of television history for me. I feel like that episode alone, could be an entire movie or a play. The writing is that good.
Excellent video my friend. You really go to great lengths to explain why the show is so successful at portraying its main themes of isolation and mental illness. Definitely one of the most insightful YT videos I've seen on this great show. Well done and thank you :)
Excellent Analysis! So glad that you're making videos on Mr Robot as it has become one of my favorite shows. The premiere episode had instantly captivated me just by how relatable Elliot was as a character.
I'll be honest and say that Elliot is one of the first characters I totally empathize with and understand his position. With clinical depression and anxiety myself. It was almost a little too authentic and genuine for me to appreciate because I realized that's how I must look to the outside world. Where Mr. Robot fails for me, is the story involved. Honestly I wish it would have simply kept with the relevant destruction of our society. Rather be a hacker taking down a dystopian government yaddah yaddah. I was much happier to see a genuine understanding of the world through someone like myself eyes. And beyond that, one of my favorite quotes from Elliot was "I hack people to understand them" or something along those lines. And I am a writer. I make and write characters to understand people. Writing is to his hacking. And I was like, thank you. Finally a show that understands.
the story is relevant too, why? because in today's world almost everything works on a computer, there are computers everywhere around you and unimaginable amount of data is traveling to-fro in the world, we all depend on that very technology as it surrounds us, it has a huge impact on our lives
The point is that the destruction of society is directly connected to our culture and government. That's why it escalates, getting to the root of those in 'control'.
I found your channel when I was searching for Spec Ops: The Line theories, I've been feeling pretty low lately, due to family issues and a state of wanting to be alone and that really no one understands me, this video shed some light upon my issues so I thank you for that.
elliot mr robot is stuck in everyone who has seen this series, it's just so relatable on some levels, I really liked that it lasted not too many seasons and the journey was better than the ending but.. all good things end. sam also made a good job finding people who know about IT since some scenes in the show are really similar to how real life hacking works
I love you, man. So many people lazily consume media, openly admitting they want the easiest possible watch or listen rather than taking the time to analyse the themes/mythic tropes and psychology in the content. The content comes out of the human psyche, which is itself a product of the present world we live in, begat by the history that preceded that... When everything we observe is so steeped in context, connotations and related to our perception (of external agents and the self) how the fuck can people only scratch the surface? Sure it takes a lot more mental energy (especially if you suffer from depression and anxiety like myself) but I just can't imagine not exploring these things. I would feel forever ill at ease putting it all on paper/film and doing the original content creators justice for the thought they put it. It's only fair to eat every layer they took the time to put in the lasagne, isn't it?
im so thankfull to be able too watch this series because it gives you the feeling that youre not the only Person out there.I thin that in our current society most people wont talk about their Problems because you then get considered Sick wich nobody wants to be.
Mr Robot and Neon Genesis Evangelion are the two most accurate portrayals of depression and social anxiety I have ever seen. I know Evangelion is a silly cartoon to most people. However, those who have experienced such mental illness will recognize it when it's properly shown in fictional stories. Same goes for the hacking in Mr Robot. Just like its portrayal of mental illness, it shows hacking done in an extremely realistic way.
This is probably the best video on Mr. Robot i have seen to date. Well done sir. And apropos the disconnect from society through technology and media, are you familiar with the works of William Gibson?
I literally wrote a paper on this topic of misportrayall of the mentally ill yesterday! We aren't these "things" that need to be made fun of, or used for shock value! We're people, and it's been nice if the world kinda stopped thinking of us like these freaky monsters.
Social Anxiety = Overwhelming fear of being negatively judged by others; and also the consequences that follows: being ostracised, called names, beat up, and other forms of bullying and abuse those ppl can think of.
Here in season/series 4 (having watched the first 3 three times)- it's more grey that it's mental illness vs. pathological (unresolved) grief. His alienation and loneliness may be due to his eccentricity but those are human states, emotional disorders rather than brain dysfunction. His anxiety being his mind telling him things must change before it's too late, but being so confused about how to change. Or I may be projecting. I love Elliot and identify with him. It's confusing because I have maternal feelings, too, me being old enough to be his mother and his mother having been narcissistic and abusive.
i had no clue what this show was about at all and now i feel so attacked because i have social anxiety and it's usually so underrepresented or mischarachterised i felt a certain safety(?) in that i wouldn't get meaningfully questioned about it and how it shapes my decisions, someone somewhere getting it right makes me feel a certain pressure to handle it better(?) or acknowledge at the very least all the pernicious aspects of my life that i've built around it, the worst thing one could do to a person who wants to fade into the background is to point a camera at them and follow them around their life for all their good and bad decisions to be broadcasted, the inner doubt feels amplified tenfold, but it also forces me to look past the fear and into the hope, since change and the unknown being scary doesn't immediately mean they're bad which is the conclusion i more easily jump to
A brilliant and creative perspective paired with the profound ability to articulate one to such a degree like you have just done; It's quite impressive, but what else do you do intellectually, bc. now you as an individual have struck an interest within my mind.
He doesn't use his tech advantage like a simple beast nor carry beastly understandings that humans get used. I've always strived to avoid degrading myself if I noticed that is the case.
Sir, this video was wonderful and might be one of the best RUclips videos I have ever seen. Your writing and dives into topics are well done and thought out. You sir are one of my new favorite channels...
mr robot has become like a drug for me . ryan you poit out the differnces with the 2 . but for me iv got both and more . theres so much of me in Elliot .and so much of him in me .. i hate being outside . its funny because long before this show i wore that same black hoodie .. and still do to this day . so when i started watching the first season i was like wow THATS ME !!
When I've started to watch mr. Robot, my first thought was. Finally, an introverted character that isn't a serial killer. But during first season he's introversion basically disappeared.
I used to have social anxiety disorder and it made it impossible to make friends which crippled my self esteem so I also became depressed for a long time
Fascinating show from a psychological standpoint. I look forward to every show with anticipation. Rami malek is excellent as elliot. I can't see anyone else playing him.
I loved this show more than I've loved any other show in a really long time. I only finished it recently and I want to watch it again. It has that quality where it rattles around there in the back of your head, I love when a story makes you think. Also, are you from Northern Ireland? Small little twangs here and there sound familiar 😊
It sounds remarkably like some of the soundtrack work Disasterpeace did for games like Fez and Hyper Light Drifter, but I can't find the specific track for the life of me. In any case, check that guy out :)
this show is literally a masterpiece
F o x t a y a m e Has to be more known
F o x t a y a m e amen
Can it be metaphorically a masterpiece??
Even the cinematography and every scene and shot are so interesting and the next level.
I think its very modest viewer base, has to do with the subject matter, which involves a lot of things that people don’t like to think or talk about. I don’t know if I can go back and watch S4E7 again, not any time soon at the very least.

An astonishing look in the post-modern human condition. I see MR ROBOT as a work about loneliness, isolation, and about the extreme alienation that we, in the overall capitalist society, suffer nowadays - not only from one-another, but even from ourselves. This one is my favorite series.
Stop making the wait for season 3 harder on me pls
That fucking show is too damn good
That fucking music in the background is too damn good
You're so damn good
I know the backround music is amazing
Well , there's always "Stranger Things" if you're hungering for some superb TV
So, would you credit the music, please?

the interesting thing is that the show portrays elliot's condition as debilitating, yet not disempowering.

This is by far the best examination of any show I have ever seen. Would love to see more.

basically a D.I.D hacker version of Taxi driver
Poor Bill he was a nice guy
That part with Bill destroyed me emotionally
First a video about Dylan Moran, and now Mr. Robot?? I'm subscribing, keep the awesome content coming :)
Thank you!
Thank you Ryan..for this great assessment of Elliot's character/ the show & its msg and society in general... and thank u for your honesty...
I want to thank the creators of this show for making me feel so not alone as I sit here alone
YES! I've been waiting for someone to do a theory on this show, love it
Literally my number 1 favorite show. It was a masterpeice. I will eventually watch it again but maybe in a decade cause it hurt me.
im so thankfull to be able too watch this series because it gives you the feeling that youre not the only Person out there.I thin that in our current society most people wont talk about their Problems because you then get considered Sick wich nobody wants to be.
Very good analysis of Elliot's character, I think you hit the nail on the head!
I just discovered your channel and wanted to say THANK YOU for these great analytical insights. You're doing an amazing job :)!
Rudy Valle NGE honestly kept crossing my mind as I watched Mr. Robot.
Love your content ! Could you analyse Charlie Brooker's Black Mirror ?
d3nv1 that would be hard since every episode is different
Black mirror sucks #opinion
This is probably the best video on Mr. Robot i have seen to date. Well done sir.
And apropos the disconnect from society through technology and media, are you familiar with the works of William Gibson?
First video I see of you and I'm suscribed. Loved the editing, script and the entonation you gave the video. Keep the good work up!
I just realized Elliot is Neo, but in a more realistic and detailed day to day depiction.
I literally wrote a paper on this topic of misportrayall of the mentally ill yesterday! We aren't these "things" that need to be made fun of, or used for shock value! We're people, and it's been nice if the world kinda stopped thinking of us like these freaky monsters.
A great job, you deserve our likes and even more! You're talented, go ahread !
Extremely thorough and perceptive analysis!
Great work as always Ryan!
Excellent video on one of the best shows ever aired on television. Great stuff man.
Sam Esmail is an absolute genius and Rami Malek is the only one who could play Elliot. A total new way of looking at tv.
You are highly articulate aswell as analytical, well done sir.
Wow, damn glad I found this channel
This was a really eloquent video
Social Anxiety = Overwhelming fear of being negatively judged by others; and also the consequences that follows: being ostracised, called names, beat up, and other forms of bullying and abuse those ppl can think of.
This is amazingly put and accurate, this show is just great
Would love to know what music/track is playing around 06:00
After listening to how Elliot's personality works in 50 different ways, I think I'm starting to understand this character.
Thank you so much for this fantastic analysis of this truly beautiful show.
Oh no! You've made me remember Elliot destroying poor Bill. I felt so bad for that guy :(
Great analysis of a great show. Getting ready for season three.
I've always strived to avoid degrading myself if I noticed that is the case.
this was beautiful. thank you
So smart, I loved the depth and meaning of the speech!
I watched both seasons of Mr Robot thanks to this video.
When I've started to watch mr. Robot, my first thought was. Finally, an introverted character that isn't a serial killer. But during first season he's introversion basically disappeared.
He became more confidence when he had to fight for Sheila. That was just his character development.
Socializing out of necessity is common with introverts
Gua he s not introverted
He has social anxiety
It s a difference
Kevin Whitcomb
is a significant difference between introverts and social anxiety
@@emanuelm3255 Social anxiety is a mental issue, being introverted is a personality trait. Both occurring at the same time is not strange.
this was great! I appreciate your honesty about relating to Elliot and that made it even more powerfull to watch. Stay star bro! 🌟🙂
That was really interesting - nicely put together.
Excellent insight, I enjoyed this video very much.
I used to have social anxiety disorder and it made it impossible to make friends which crippled my self esteem so I also became depressed for a long time
oh youtube....just because i am watching this video does not mean i need an ad in the corner about seeking therapy and mental help. Lmao.
It's so fantastic because of the accurate IT stuff as well
Fascinating show from a psychological standpoint. I look forward to every show with anticipation. Rami malek is excellent as elliot. I can't see anyone else playing him.
Here from an AV Club fb post. Nice job on video. Keep it up!
I loved this show more than I've loved any other show in a really long time. I only finished it recently and I want to watch it again. It has that quality where it rattles around there in the back of your head, I love when a story makes you think.
Also, are you from Northern Ireland? Small little twangs here and there sound familiar 😊
'Couldn't have said it any better. Thank you.
man love these mr robot videos
Mr. Robot... damn that name just took on a whole new meaning.
He is my granddaughter to the fullest. When I see how he interacts with others I see her. And super high I Q with pretty close talents with technology
Cool
Can I ask you about the artist and track name of the music starting at 6 minutes?
It sounds remarkably like some of the soundtrack work Disasterpeace did for games like Fez and Hyper Light Drifter, but I can't find the specific track for the life of me. In any case, check that guy out :)
Look for Mr. Robot ambients track
Every time I think about Bill I have to cry
