"The cult of price to part ratio" I love that. That needs to be an official term
even Tiago Catarino is part of it, and he's an ex-lego designer so should know better...
The horned helmets, as far as I know, originated from an Opera named "Ring der Nibelungen" by German composer Richard Wagner. The depiction of northern german warriors with horned helmets shaped how the public viewed Vikings. Even though the helmets wouldn't be at all practical in combat, they sure look cool and immediatly distinguish "vikings" from any other warrior-zivilisation at the time in modern media. So I completly understand why LEGO stuck to this design of the vikings.
it was also from a bad interpretation of drinking horns
Featured in the legendary Looney Toons segment with “ _kill the wabbit_ “ .
You also got a realistic nordic helmet in this set (similar to CMF viking), in the forge. I don't mind horns as you can easily remove them, and the shields look magnificent.
I personally disagree that they look cool. Numerous other cultures are depicted with helmets that include horns also. They're common in art from the bronze age and in even Gallic headwear that there is actually evidence for.
I think the CMF series helmet looks much better.
I love this set so much. Best of the year. Once I have it in hand, I may declare it best ever (my current favorite is the Medieval Blacksmith shop)
I am definitely getting this, as I am Norwegian, I can not skip on a Viking set lol. I think I like the Eldorado Fortress even more than this personally, but this has to abe a second :D
$130 is a very respectable price. The fact that it looks that good on all sides for only $130 is pretty amazing in 2023
Looks great! And only for $129.99? That seems like a really good deal
Many European countryes have this priced at 170€, which is equal to 190$ US. That's a ridiculous difference, and people should absolutely NOT ignore it.
Don't get me wrong, I'm happy for the people who will be able to get this at 130$, and there will most likely be discounts, but still, this difference is absolutely stupid.
@@nkende wow, normally the difference between US/CAD $, €, and £ is pretty close but a $60-70 difference is egriegious. maybe Target set the price in the US and Lego themselves set it in other regions?
@@nkendeyea that’s stupid. How does Lego even decide that?
@@nkende well I suppose it’s a good thing the UK never joined the Eurozone, given we get this for £125 which is roughly 160 USD, still more expensive but not by as much.
Don’t jinks it!
My only concern about Target exclusivity is they basically NEVER go on sale
Looking forward to buying multiple of these and buidling a small village. Can definitely combine 2 of the center buildings for a main chief's house or something
This set makes me SO happy. I know people love the Lion Knights castle, but this is RIGHT in my mid-2000s Lego nostalgia
Wow $130 is a good price pre tax of course in the US. Build looks significant and plenty of nice prints.
I am surprised by how well this set looks, it's built all around, they didn't just forget about the backside, it's a good price for it as well. Good job Lego.
I defentially been looking forward to hearing your thoughts on this set!
Finally printed parts have returned and lego classic theme at an excellent price.
This and the El Dorados fortress set are a must for me
A nice display, and something that I would be happy with, but it's not a must have for me. Only critique from me is that it could use a bit more colour/life. Some chickens or sheep would have done that
Can never have enough animals! A couple of chickens would have done nicely but I think the most glaring omission is a small viking long boat.
Making a sea/river side village and not including a Viking boat seems like a missed opportunity.
That is a nice Viking village, nice little slice of the vikings' world. Seems pretty realistic too. The price is good. I look forward to your review.
Jang all I want to say is I love your videos I’ve been watching some of the 9 year old classic space reviews, child icon❤
all i see when i see this is finally a smidgen of lego how to train your dragon
Already got it pre-ordered, thanks for letting me know it was up
I’m excited to display this with my lion knight castle.
With a bit of a modification and some classic minifigures, I am going to use this as Lake Town from The Hobbit…
Will look great next to Rivendell.
This looks like a really impressive set and it is always nice to have a Viking set not based on warfare. The build experience looks like it will be particularly strong with the sheer quantity of off grid building and the semi modular design should allow for good access for play. Interested to see more.
Definitely will buy 3 and convert to a large medieval village
I’m definitely getting this as soon as a good GWP comes out. Great set.
Shouldnt the majisto set come around this same period? 18th/19th nov. If rumors are correct.
I hope that if this sells well that the Lego team does something like this but Japanese inspired, thatd be a dream come true!
I would love a Japanese theme/subtheme focusing on samurai and ninja. There are already some great Japanese art/architecture sets but some minfig scaled play sets would be the dream!
very impressed. will pre order two this weekend
Great price for a change
what I like is the return of the 1x4 tile with gold snake print !
Lego has jacked up their prices with sets so much recently that a normal, fairly priced set like this seems cheap to consumers like us.
This makes me very happy I’m definitely picking this one up
Looks amazing
well, this set definately is on my (very)short list of sets to get this year :-). thx for sharing your thoughts Jang :-)
I can’t wait to see the inevitable Rohan alt builds.
I'm surprised the set is rather peaceful. Since actually every viking set came with at least 1 mythical creature to fight. And it didn't have to be a monster to fight they could add anything really. Heck even a pair of dolphins would work. But to just get the village. And I got the other viking sets all of them.
So I will display this with the smaller vessel. 7016. Which will be ideal with this village. I obviously also got the fort and large ship. But I fear that stuff will dwarf the village. The docking area seems to favor a smaller vessel. So that will work great.
Dang! I love this set. Now if I can find a place for it.😁
Really great set at a really great price point in 2023. I will be buying this one
I am happy because we FINALLY get not overpriced set that looks great and its a propper playset!
Even though I clicked on this video I'm gonna avoid looking at any more pictures or videos of this set so I can be surprised when I get it!
This is on my wishlist. But might have to choose between it and the A-frame cabin.
lacks some animals other than fish. Vikings were freakin farmers.
yeah a cow or sheep would have been a nice touch but it seems to be set up on a complete island so not much room for livestock.
Thank you for all the Is nostalgia years I wish I can get this like a set it looks really cool maybe I ask my brother togetherAt ChristmasAt Christmas😃😃
Well this is a surprise, I wasn't aware of this new reveal, and it looks way nice, and for once, really not a very expensive set, I was sure it would cost over 200$ at first glance, happy I was wrong! But I do like how it looks in general, looking forward to the build and your review, Jang.
For a village set, I wish they would've refrained from the stereotypical Viking warrior minifigs, there's already several sets about Viking raids. It'd be nice to just get like a family or two in regular wool or linen clothes and some farm animals, you know, actual village stuff in a village set.
Issue is that those would technically not be vikings, just a Scandinavian village. "Viking" specifically refers to the raid.
Reality is that most people just don't care enough about that sort of thing and just want the typical warrior stuff
This set is flippin' amazing! Day 1 purchase from me!
I’m imagining some epic Edoras mocs coming out of this
Vikings also had long houses with a large central rectangular hearth. The horned helmets are from Victorian operas and which Hollywood borrowed a lot from.
I love how they didn't include a (small) ship wasting budget, and rather do the village right
Exactly, do it properly or save the pieces.
In Slovakia, the official price is 145 euros. Weird.
Very cool! It’s been a long while since I have purchased a set sadly. This set might break that streak.
This will go great with the Viking Ship and the Midgard Serpent set.
Idunno.. the viking ship is only about 1.5 inches shorter in length, it may be a bit too big.
130 bucks?! I litterally paid 120 for the Ideas Blacksmith set this price is NUTS amazing!!!
Not as snowy as I expected. But I’ll stick pick it up!
Lego Ideas is best way how to get classic icon themes like old castle, pirates and vikings.
I can’t see the price I only see something I’ve been waiting for years hopefully we will get a gladiator/Roman empire type set soon
This! I have always wanted a set in that theme, maybe with some exotic animals inside a model of an arena. That would be so cool. Or maybe a small group of Roman soldiers camping in the wild would be awesome too.
From the UK..This set looks amazing and the price is really good....But will deffo hold out for sales, reckon it will hit £90,especially around black friday maybe...
That is a beautiful price point
This set ticks all the boxes!
Shields. Vikings shields. Omg. Multi color round shields. Moar..... MOAR!
Yeah I'm buying this
"The becon is litt and Rohan will ansher!"
Even a great canadian price, I have to watch your vids for canadian content
thats amazing! i’d love to make it into a skyrim moc of sorts with it.
Across Europe the prices are from 140 to 155, weird...
Bei Odin, cool set!
I understand value is more than just price per piece, but as a Canadian who's dollar does less and less these days, it's quite nice to get 2100 pieces for 170 dollars y'know?
The annoying thing about this is that they include the more realistic helmets in the armoury. But I guess they can just be swapped around when I get the set
Hard to believe that this really is the price of the set. I'm not really into the build but it's an unusually great deal for sure
Not a bad price for this set. I like it.
Always wanted this as a kid, but come on. At least make some historically accurate vikings.
I have a feeling it’s gonna only be around 100USD in unofficial shops in Hong Kong. Would be a good deal.
This model would go hard if you have a custom made kratos minifig or a toothless moc lol
Super stylish, great Set. Will def buy this one. But all, when its time for 😉👌✌️ #PEACE
Looks cool and I definitely like the classic lego viking vibe, but the helmets arent the only inaccurate part. All of their prints are pure hollywood
If the price remains true at release, these things are going to sell like hot cakes.
They have included a proper viking helmet from the cmf series it's in image 9 , the female viking is holding it
I would’ve guessed that this set costs $190 just eyeballing it, that’s awesome. Getting so many Skyrim vibes, that bridge would be great to Shout people off.
At least the included Lagertha.
it might be a coincidence, but the Blacksmith lady could be a mythological reference
see she has the mjolnir piece, that alone wouldn't necessarily mean anything, but she also has red hair, which traditional mythological Thor is supposed to have, and of course the fact that she is a she is point in of itself, as in the Þrymskviða Thor disguised himself as a woman (specifically Freya)
Say what you will about horned helmets, but I really wish in these viking sets they would include more of the CMF viking helmets for some more variety for people who want them and not the opera caricature of vikings.
There's not a lot about this that reads as Viking. The tower feels more like some Anglo-Saxon ordeal or otherwise early medieval British Isles.
Vikings were known for their very large houses, called Longhouses, that would house a family, their animals and thralls. Longhouses predate the Vikings even and we're still in use after the Viking Age ended.
This feels more like a small storage hut in England, had it only been using more stone.
Meanwhile it feels like "Ideas" is the only Lego Series that combines interesting sets with reasonable pricing. Why not always like that? (Or at least half of the time)
I would assume it’s because the design cost is significantly cheaper
Yes. You should scream "Fus Ro Dah", every time you open o numbered bag.
Everything printed in this set are actual prints and not stickers, per an interview with the designer of the set.
Vikings have horns - literally unplayable ;)
😮
The wife and i are gonna battle to see who gets this set.
will we be able to buy this at the Lego store, or is it only available at Target? I'm trying to save my VIP (Insider) points, and I can't figure out how I get points at Target.
it looks fine, but we could have had a playable minigolf set
I love it. Do you think it will go with the Medieval Blacksmith set?
Size wise I think the medieval blacksmith is too big for a lot of buildings, as it’s soo tall! But this set will pair nicely size wise with maybe the lion knights castle
yes but the scale and detail really match the Lions knight castle... will be nice to have a faction of raiders to raid the royal bakery for sweet treats... did you know vikings had a sweet tooth?
I think the scale is way smaller
The difference in scale will probably be huge
I'm surprised these buildings have 4 walls, not 2.5 walls like in many other sets.
I'm surprised it's not $200
Gimme gimme gimme gimme
I may as well just hand over my bank account details at this point cos the lego company has figured me out
though tbh all these sets being "special edition", "18+", "designer", "ideas" type sets is a little too on the nose for me, like, this set would be so much cooler as a regular lego set
Is that printed brown piece above the same one that is in the green grocer set? The same one I just paid waaaaaay to much for times 3, second hand?!?!?!?!?
Its a new print!
No, not exactly 😉
Looks soooo small!
This is really well done, only major gripe is the lack of a small long boat. I hope they aren't counting on people getting the 3 in 1 set to make up for that, its too big. It will pair nicely with the Lions knight castle though. As a new faction of raiders to raid the royal bakery for sweet treats! did you know the vikings had a sweet tooth?
Just wanted to let everyone know how insanely unfair the pricing of this set is: sure it's 130$ US and 140€ in germany, but in multiple other countries the price is 170€, which is around 190$.
Otherwise the set looks pretty good, thanks Jang for all the work you do!
Yayyyy. Time for some brick based pillage and plunder, kids
I see them raiding the royal bakery for sweet treats!
No boat….
I think that was a good choice, I thinks it’s better to focus the village rather then a side build, ( keep in mind the original submission did not have one )
Would love it but their prices remain cracked.
