Her comment about the friction from "protective styling" causing people's hair to break is so important. However, said person religiously wears braids and ponytails (made with synthetic fibers) religiously. I wish people realized that many of these styles are not "protective."

Just wanted to say Thank You for these tip and this video. I have be natural for about 7 years now. And after watching this video this the first time that I was able to NOT SPEND AT LEAST AN JUST HOUR WASHING AND DETANGLING MY HAIR!!!!!!! I was shook such a small amount of hair. I have wash my hair using these methods. MINDBLOWN. My hair is so defined out the shower and flat. I’m so used to a whole Afro right out the shower that I feel like a new woman now.
This was great! I already smooth out the hair and finger detangle while I shampoo...but I just happened on it by trial and error. Nice to know I'm doing it right!!
I like the detangle and smoothing process while shampooing. I will definitely do this on my hair and grandson hair. His hair starts to get detangled very easy. Thanks for the tutorial 😀 😊

Jenn! These videos with Elaine are so good. I am truly watching them a second time because I could not absorb it all the first time. Again thank you for this. Have a wonderful Christmas and New Years!! 🎉🎉❤😊
I really enjoyed this video because it really challenged a lot I know about natural hair, for example if u don't use oils and butter how do u lock in moisture after using a leave-in, also I noticed that she washed the strands I thought u wash ur scalp but condition your strands
TY for doing this Jenn!! Elaine and you together teaming up have great information, awesome styling tips. I learned a lot about the detangling while shampooing and it was so soothing to watch!! lol I’ll give my wash n gos a go in 2023, I’m rocking twist on out of 2022 but this gave me great confidence! Thank you both so much!! ❤
I use a medicated Shampoo bar on my scalp (2% zinc pyrithione) and it’s very stripping when I rinse it. Can I do a oil prepoo? Also I have seborrheic dermatitis on my scalp so need to use teatree oil on my scalp as well (diluted of course) Oil doesn’t work for all with seborrheic but does well for me 👍🏽 I will keep the cleansing info in mind
Can you provide more education on oils and butters or direct us to a source for more details? What should we mix oils with if we decide to use it? When we do use oils where do we put it? Do we not put it directly on the scalp? Does that mean we should put oils on the roots and/or shaft and/or ends of the hair instead? Where should the placement be? What about creams and butters? How should we use these, where on the hair can they be used and when? Is this the same for locs and natural kinky or coily hair? Are the thoughts that the oils and creams are causing alopecia as it blocks the follicles, especially with the reduce hair washing in the black community? Thanks for your support with answering these questions.
I did learn something, I'm wondering if I'm doing too much?! I use the Melanin shampoo almost every wash day and it gets my hair squeaky clean, followed by a moisturizing shampoo. No issues but maybe you don't need to do that so often?
It depends on the products that you use in your hair I think. IF you heavy duty products, then you likely need the shampoos to effectively cleanse your hair. I wouldn't overthink it, as long as your hair and scalp is CLEAN. As you can see from the video, she washed my hair 3 times (and I would never do that lol)
Thank you for posting this video just yesterday I was thinking of relaxing my hair again, not because I want to but because my hair is in an awkward stage and I find it difficult to style it. I dislike wearing wigs but I was considering buying one in order not to deal with my hair. My issue is when I style my hair it doesn't look cute,
Not dealing with your hair is never the answer I find. What don't you think your style is "cute". Are you still comparing your styles to when you were relaxed? because that is two different looks.
In styling, you need to know about the weather condition of your area and the style you are going for. So far, I've realised that the only things I need are my shampoo, conditioner, leave-in, and strong-hold gel like Ecostyler Olive or equivalent to make my style last for a whole week or more. The gel is good for my hot and humid area and my sweaty scalp as well.
Love washing videos, so satisfying 😌 For me- I think it’s helpful as additional motivation to not give up. Especially the comment of giving it longer then a month. I feel like I do the wash and go for two weeks, get frustrated and then try again for another two weeks 5 months from then 😂
Oh yeah, its a whole learning process. Think about how long it took us to adapt to going natural and taking care of our hair. It wasn't a quick process.
I am a little bit confused so no butters no oils is you can use oils and butter just not in its raw form. So what should be mix it with? I always use a carrier oil with my mix.
When they say not in its raw form they mean oils that you would by at the supermarket for example. They are okay with oils/butters that have been formulated well into hair products because all the beneficial parts are kept and mixed with other ingredients like humectants in order for the hair to have the most benefit. Even mixing oils with other natural ingredients at home can be tricky because there are other added challenges like getting correct ratios, the shelf life or bacteria or mold forming, or the ingredients separating (like if you are mixing oils with water based ingredients they don't actually stay together). Hope that makes sense. I think like Elaine said in the video, if you want to use raw oils, it's important to make sure you are cleansing adequately and often enough so the oils don't build up which make it harder for the hair to retain hydration, which is essential for curl health.
Oh no oils on scalp?! I may have to see a dermatologist. If I put absolutely nothing on my scalp, it starts to get itchy 1-2 days and getting flakes after about 2-3 days. I've always had dandruff and I thought oiling the scalp would help with that. Agh... I've been washing weekly for about a month and a half so it's a little too early to see a difference with my scalp. Washing my hair tomorrow and I'll try leaving my scalp dry I guess. lol I'm scared. *ALSO, I've recently learned about the difference with clarifying so what's good *clarifying shampoos?
I was the same and used oils for nearly a decade. Believe it or not, once I stopped using oils, my scalp got MUCH better and flakes after 7+ days now (which is an indication that I need to wash anyways). It took a few months to get there, almost like a detox period once I stopped using the oils. PS. Dandruff feeds off of oils so if you truly do have dandruff (which we often confuse with dry scalp), then you need to see a dermatologist. Oils will actually make it worst. Good luck girl, you got this.
My scalp was the same but believe it or not, once I stopped the oils, it went away (after a couple of months). My scalp is now clear and will only itch after 7+ days when its time to wash anyways. We underestimate the power of our natural sebum, which conditions our scalp effectively.
Did you learn something new? If so, leave a comment below! Also, if you plan on getting any of the products, using the links in description box will help support my channel tremendously ❤️
I want to sip the no oils no butter Koolaid so badly. I know ladies cut their hair, but I have yet to see anyone with long 4c hair using no oils and butters. I also haven't seen any research showing oils cannot be cleansed from the hair.
Ultimately, it is your choice what you decide to do with your hair but this method isn't going to "grow" one's hair. Hair growth is an internal thing affected by diet, stress, exercise, vitamin deficiencies, etc... This is a simple approach to hair care that helps to hydrated and keep your hair hydrated for 4-7 days without the need to "remoisturize" all while addressing scalp issues due to inflammation. There are very little research on the benefits of raw oils.
I would like to add that hair is less likely to break off when it is fully hydrated (as well as getting regular trims etc). I have thick coarse strands so my hair naturally does not feel silky, but now it actually feels soft because it's not coated with heavy products anymore. Soft pliable hair is less likely to break off 😁
@@JennJackson that makes sense I have yet to see research showing oil can't be removed from hair with surfactants. I understand it is not a method to grow hair I did not think it was.
