This song is about a street artist named Artis the Spoonman, who played the spoons on the streets of Seattle, where Soundgarden formed. Artis played his spoons on the song, and is credited on the album (Spoons: Artis The Spoonman). He is also featured in the video. When Songfacts spoke with Artis in 2013, he said he earned a flat fee of $1,000 for performing on the song, and another $7,000 to appear in the video. Describing how Soundgarden contacted him, he said: "In 1992, they had me do a tweener [a performance between acts] between them and Melvins. And their manager at the time, Susan Silver, she told me Chris [Cornell] is writing a song, 'Spoonman,' and would I like to record on it when it's done. And so in '93, almost a year and a half later, they called me and we went in the studio that day and recorded it. Went through four takes and that was that. Two hours. That was the recording session."
That $8000 was probably the most he ever earned for his talent. If he was smart, he would have opted for a percentage of the album sales instead. Even if it was only 1% it would have been a hell of a lot more than $8000.
+Danthehorse Seriously, the music coming out now is depressing. You had this, alice in chains, STP, Chili peppers, Nirvana, etc. Such a great time for music.

You're right! Thanks for chipping in. But I wasn't that far off! 7+7 = 14, that's the same length of phrase as 4+4+4+2. Considering there are different accents in the 1st and 2nd bar, if anyone could tell me how to HEAR the difference between constant 7/4 and 4/4 with a change to 2/4 on last bar (without looking at the sheet) I'd learn something new today.
DailyFrankPeter I was always told that the first beat of a bar is usually the strongest; that being the case, the beginning of that main melodic riff in _Spoonman_ somehow “feels” stronger than all of the others (in fact, as you probably saw from the sheet, an entire bar contained all seven of the beats within that riff before it repeated in the next bar). Trying to shoehorn that riff into three 4/4 bars then a 2/4 doesn’t work using this principle because the beginning of the first repeat of the riff would then happen in the fourth and final beat of the second 4/4 bar, which does not really sit that well compared to when using 7/4. I have to admit that spotting the 7/4 in the verses of _Outshined_ is probably easier to ascertain than in _Spoonman_ as there are not so many syncopated rhythms within the verse riffs of _Outshined_. 7/4 is one of what is known as irregular time-signatures, in which some of the pulses within the bar have three inner beats and others have two (in this case, one pulse having three inner beats and the other two having two inner beats). For a bit more from a renowned music teacher who does online instructional videos you might like to check out a RUclips channel named MusicTheoryGuy and his “Irregular Time Signatures” video for a bit more about such time-signatures if this whole discussion has piqued your interest to that level. While we are on about the album from which _Spoonman_ came (in this case, _Superunknown_), one of the other tracks (_My Wave_) clearly has five beats per bar during its verses. Yes, another irregular time-signature (5/4, in this case)!
The fact that Chris has the vocal range he has and can sustain the high notes as long as he can, differentiates him from the schlocks that auditions on the Voice. This is, the voice of rock!
Can't believe nobody's talking about how amazing that 7/4 riff is. today the world of grunge very sad .we lost a great man, great voice, talent and hero . Rest In Peace Chris Cornell . Your music still lives on The Man.
My heart is broken. I never knew u personally, yet you've been such a huge factor in my life for the past 24 years. I've fell on black days...may you rest peacefully, my beautiful Chris...💜 Say hello to heaven..
I have been high and low but through it all I could always rely on Chris Cornells voice to save my life from very dark times .his death crushed me so bad rip Mr Cornell.
I was 17 when this song came out. It is the best song ever created. I have made instructions to my wife. When I die and cremated, this song will play for one month at the foot of my urn. Then she can dispose of me as she wishes.
Cornell was severely depressed ,in this song he repeats many times over ''save me'' .Sometimes the cry for help is right there in the lyrics if you listen hard enough to catch it . RIP Chris .
Spoonman wore a shirt in the video that says " Save Your Self " you are right about depression but in this song it's a catch that you have to watch the video closer to catch it, now Fell On Black Days is about depression and in the end of that song he says " how would I know that this would be my fate " and around 25 years later, suicide. Bone chilling! The day I tried to live has a man rapping a chord around his neck while he's standing upside down, another cry, you're missed Chris 😢
dont be deceived so easily lol. yes he understood depression, all humans will by some point in their life, and yes he was really big about helping people with those issues. but "if you listen hard enough to catch it" the majority of his songs for one could of course mean many different things to different people , but they also have entirely different meanings way below the surface than what they appear to be at first glance
@@adammorgan2427 "go on and save yourself, and take it out on me" from Cochise could mean alotta things to alot of people, although its actually a reference to the crucifixion. virtually all of his songs have many meanings

james redden Do you even math? Dude, this guy would be 38 or 39 years old now. *Almost* 40. If he was 15 when this came out, he would have been born in 1979. As for spelling errors: that's absolutely ridiculous. Ignoring the fact that this is the Internet, and most people don't pay enough attention when writing, and that the only mistakes he made were spelling "being" and forgetting a couple apostrophes (simple mistakes), if you look at his channel, you'll realize that it would appear his first language was not English, but Portuguese. Nice run-on sentence by the way, since we're nitpicking shit. C Galhano i was a young teen as well. And i was connected soon as i heard it. But i had already knew who it was by his voice. As i had bootlegs from back before things came out so quickly like other songs b4 spoon man. Spoon man was a complete surprise and totally rocked my teens.
My mom used to play this in the car when I was like 5 and I used to think this song was about a superhero that was a spoon. I very recently learned the real meaning. Still rocks though.
My best memory with this song is when it played in radio in our car and my mum paniced during spoons solo because she thought that somethimg in the car was broken.
This song/video was my introduction to Soundgarden. "Superunknown" easily ranks amongst the albums that left an indelible imprint on me and it has been a faithful life companion so far. The music, the lyrics (and the videos...) shook my teenage world like only a few bands did before.

hahaha..by no means have I masted the spoon man solo..it's like air guitar..no idea what im doing but it just feels right, like im there rockin or should i say Spoonin' with them!
I brought out the cowbell and a few drumsticks for a friend's band and played that solo for a karaoke crowd a few times--It was so much fun!
They don't make 'em like this anymore. RIP, brother
I was rhythm and lead guitarist for a band back 20 years ago who was greatly influenced by soundgarden and the Seattle sound.Chris you were one of a kind.Your voice was amazing a gift from God.
Spoon man is a great band I love this guy he is so cool
They actually included a spoon solo in this song.
Greg Harris prove it
Greg Harris prove it

RIP Chris Cornell.

Brandon Umagat don't forget Scott
We need to protect Eddie at all costs
Brandon Umagat don't forget Andy
Kieron Moore pleaseeeeee
and Shannon...
I know its all subjective, but to me this is the best hard rock song ever made. And I'm not changing my mind.
👍
We've lost one of the greatest rock vocalists ever. Rest in peace, Chris
RIP Chris Cornell. Soundgarden's BEST song. I don't care what anyone thinks.
metalgrinch This and Burden In My Hand
metalgrinch YES. ^^^^
This and The Day I Tried to Live, but I'm thinking Spoonman edges out The Day a little
metalgrinch I agree!! The best song! ❤
metalgrinch Loud Love and Hands All Over for me.
I used to think that this song was about a guy who really liked spoons.
lol God bless you Ezra
Wait its not?
Technically correct
It's about Artis the Spoon Man
I thought this song was about shooting heroin
This song, this album, back in 1994, during my final year of high school is how I discovered Soundgarden. 30 years later, I'm still in awe of this track and collaboration.
That god damn drum solo...😭😱💕
God, I didn't know, that Chris Cornell was a frontman of both Soundgarden and Audioslave! What a legend!
Truly. He also fronted with the members of “Pearl Jam” to create the album “Temple of the Dog” he’s also got several solo albums that have a wide range of music, as well as featuring on a ton of random tracks. Man was truly a rock God
He also did work with temple of the dog...and I think there drummer was in mad season. Which was the late great Layne Staley as frontman
Ya what planet are you from? Lol
how about that audioslave is rage against the machine without zach as the lead singer? Just add you a Chris Cornell + RAGE - Zach DelaRoche = Audioslave
What does good have to do with it?
Bro, that repercussion bridge is sick as hell, and the bass that follows is the cherry on top. Never gets old.
Incredible. Incredible voice, incredible music, incredible energy. Forever and ever.
Remember listening to this everyday, the 90's seems like yesterday, the best 10 years of my life. RIP Chris.
The world is now a worst place without him... R.I.P Mr Cornell and thank you for your music...
robert garcia THANKS my friend ,,💥
It has been 3 years today since we lost you and still it is a shock you are not here with that voice and music. RIP Chris ~ (20th July 1964~May 18th 2017) 🖤
It hurts every day all the time. 😔
What a powerhouse of singing Chris was. RIP, we miss you!
today the world of grunge very sad .we lost a great man, great voice, talent and hero .
One part of my musical soul died the day Chris passed @Amy Lynn & @Sean Kopperstad. :'-(
This song be Slapping
Chris, a gorgeous, phenomenal talent, a great man, a true musician.
No one today holds a candle to the great performers of the so called grunge era.
God Bless SOUNDGARDEN! I Love All of Their Music!!!
For me Soundgarden has withstood the test of time the best of all the bands of that era. Still awesome!
I miss Keith moon
Nirvana was phenomenal, Stp was sexy, Pearl Jam was poetic but Soundgarden is raw unadulterated talent..
@Cerberus202 AIC was all of those things he mentioned
@@pedrobailey735 preach it brother
Well said except I agree where's the AIC love. They were a bit heavier but still definitely deserving of mentioning. Miss this music
in gonna have to go to with AIC. never heard a voice like Layne's. I really love all the others too though.
Temple of the Dog could be viewed as the grunge generation version of The Traveling Wilburys! 🍻🇺🇸💥🤘🏼🧨🇺🇸🍻
What an awesome 7/4 signature!
So sad that you're gone, you had a voice like NO OTHER, one of kind......forever Rest In Peace.
Forever be one of the Best Songs in the History of Music
I was 17 when this song came out. It is the best song ever created. I have made instructions to my wife. When I die and cremated, this song will play for one month at the foot of my urn. Then she can dispose of me as she wishes.
The Legend doesn't die cause the man does. R.I.P Cornell.

Miserably SAD.
dont be deceived so easily lol. yes he understood depression, all humans will by some point in their life, and yes he was really big about helping people with those issues. but "if you listen hard enough to catch it" the majority of his songs for one could of course mean many different things to different people , but they also have entirely different meanings way below the surface than what they appear to be at first glance
@@adammorgan2427 "go on and save yourself, and take it out on me" from Cochise could mean alotta things to alot of people, although its actually a reference to the crucifixion. virtually all of his songs have many meanings
Chris wasn't crying out for help, his IQ was and is far beyond this world,he had had enough of the debauchery of this world and wanted to go to a place where he would ne understood
I was 15 years old when this came out.... it marked my early years.... almost 40 now and I still get goose bumps listening to this.
Its a shame Chris life ended so soon, thank you for beeing part of my life.
Rest In Peace...
that is why he said almost
james redden
Do you even math?
Dude, this guy would be 38 or 39 years old now. *Almost* 40. If he was 15 when this came out, he would have been born in 1979. As for spelling errors: that's absolutely ridiculous. Ignoring the fact that this is the Internet, and most people don't pay enough attention when writing, and that the only mistakes he made were spelling "being" and forgetting a couple apostrophes (simple mistakes), if you look at his channel, you'll realize that it would appear his first language was not English, but Portuguese. Nice run-on sentence by the way, since we're nitpicking shit.
Lesson for you punk: Don't you dare fucking disrespect your elders (unless with VERY good reason).
-The 16 Year Old Who Caught You Acting Like A Dumbass
C Galhano i was a young teen as well. And i was connected soon as i heard it. But i had already knew who it was by his voice. As i had bootlegs from back before things came out so quickly like other songs b4 spoon man. Spoon man was a complete surprise and totally rocked my teens.
What did james say he deleted his comment
Cool story, bro. But, yeah, he had an F'n voice
My mom used to play this in the car when I was like 5 and I used to think this song was about a superhero that was a spoon. I very recently learned the real meaning. Still rocks though.
Brilliant 👍
He's a sad soul, but a beautiful one
Chris was an empath 🖤✌ as I *
That's cause your mom is rad
Used to be my favorite song. I miss Chris, he sang with his whole soul!!!
My best memory with this song is when it played in radio in our car and my mum paniced during spoons solo because she thought that somethimg in the car was broken.
🤣🤣👍👍
😂😂😂😂😂😂
🤣🤣🤣
hahahaha lol.
Legit burst out laughing at that 🤣
This song/video was my introduction to Soundgarden.
"Superunknown" easily ranks amongst the albums that left an indelible imprint on me and it has been a faithful life companion so far.
The music, the lyrics (and the videos...) shook my teenage world like only a few bands did before.
I find it necessary after the last 5 years to return to this genre.
Without a doubt 💯
same
in my Clown World playlist along with Bullet With Butterfly Wings and Show Me How To Live
Grunge era '90's key player
and Voice along with Kurt.
R.I.P. Chris.
No disrespect to Kurt, I love Nirvana, but his vocal talent was no where near Chris Cornell
Voice unmistakable.. like Edward's guitar.. you just know it. And you feel it. There will NEVER be another like Chris Cornell. Just rest buddy. Peace will eventually come with justice served
One of the best drum solos and lyrics of all time 😊
That scream still gives me goosebumps
Used to sing that scream but then I got older LOL...Gave some people in karaoke the shivers too! May you still RIP my buddy Chris! (@Aman Adhav)
Tragic loss...don't hear music like this anymore 😢
Then come to Frederick Maryland and hear me sing.
Renee Gibson hey Renee I think what you said about Chris Cornell are you Jackson Township New Jersey cuz if you are you're my neighbor my God yeah that would be you're still my neighbor
There's other good bands still in existence who still perform. You live under a 90s rock, most of the grunge bands are dead now except Pearl Jam.
Check Ritchie Kotzen. He has a very similar voice... The Winery Dogs - Elevate
It is tragic and his music and voice was one of a kind.
Heard this weeks before anything else from the album. Knew that the band had "ascended" to another level. This work is still relevant & essential
What a song, what a great snare sound!

This songs been stuck in my head all day. And it will also be stuck in yours.
Soundgarden was such a part of my teenage years. Had a poster up of Chris Cornell in my room.. and the movie Singles was my favorite movie. RIP
My dad and I have a joke with the song that never fails to make me smile. When I found out Chris had passed I was so sad that such a great singer was gone, but the legacy he left behind was so important and not to be forgotten. 💙
This song is special to me and mine as well

Black Jesus yeah, mention it not to tell us lol.

He did tell you, you just couldn't comprehend the humour with your mere mortal mind.
this is the peak of human artistic talent
happy birthday artis.. 72 years old 💯🤟🏾
oh todays his b day?
His birthday is in October so the above could be correct.
2019 and I'm still in love with Soundgarden. Chris will always be the best singer.
2021 still love it at 38 years old
Save me with your irreplacable voice ... RIP, Chris.
Song reminds me of my dad. He’d play the spoons to every country song that came on the radio 😂😂😂
"Spoonman" was released as a single on this day in 1994.
Thanks to Chis Cornell for letting me know.
This was song #8 on Superunknown......God....Superunknown and Badmotorfinger......
......what a couple of amazing fucking albums, huh fellow 90's kids?
...and my 15 year old is in the next room listening to Man in a Box...lol...there's hope for the future.
Tracy Johnson ...Nice! Great job, mom.

I still have my cassete tape of this album until now.(Circa '94) \m/

I'll take the analog tape... or better still, the vinyl :)
