REMASTERED IN HD! Music video by Soundgarden performing Spoonman. (C) 1994 A&M Records #Soundgarden #Spoonman #Remastered #Vevo #Rock #OfficialMusicVideo
"feel the Rhythm with your hands, feel the rhythm while you can" Lol he seriously wrote a song about a guitarist and made it sound as if he was talking about heroin lol
This song is about a street artist named Artis the Spoonman, who played the spoons on the streets of Seattle, where Soundgarden formed. Artis played his spoons on the song, and is credited on the album (Spoons: Artis The Spoonman). He is also featured in the video. When Songfacts spoke with Artis in 2013, he said he earned a flat fee of $1,000 for performing on the song, and another $7,000 to appear in the video. Describing how Soundgarden contacted him, he said: "In 1992, they had me do a tweener [a performance between acts] between them and Melvins. And their manager at the time, Susan Silver, she told me Chris [Cornell] is writing a song, 'Spoonman,' and would I like to record on it when it's done. And so in '93, almost a year and a half later, they called me and we went in the studio that day and recorded it. Went through four takes and that was that. Two hours. That was the recording session."
That $8000 was probably the most he ever earned for his talent. If he was smart, he would have opted for a percentage of the album sales instead. Even if it was only 1% it would have been a hell of a lot more than $8000.
Can't believe nobody's talking about how amazing that 7/4 riff is. Most riffs that aren't 4/4 end up sounding convoluted and awkward, trying way too hard to be something unique; this does it so smoothly, I didn't even recognize it was an odd time signature on my first listen. Kim Thayil is a mastermind.

+DailyFrankPeter This song is notable for having that main riff in a 7/4 time-signature. www.musicroom.com/se/id_no/0572359/details.html _Outshined_, from their _Badmotorfinger_ album, also uses a 7/4 time-signature throughout its verses. www.musicroom.com/se/id_no/0660042/details.html
You're right! Thanks for chipping in. But I wasn't that far off! 7+7 = 14, that's the same length of phrase as 4+4+4+2. Considering there are different accents in the 1st and 2nd bar, if anyone could tell me how to HEAR the difference between constant 7/4 and 4/4 with a change to 2/4 on last bar (without looking at the sheet) I'd learn something new today.
DailyFrankPeter I was always told that the first beat of a bar is usually the strongest; that being the case, the beginning of that main melodic riff in _Spoonman_ somehow “feels” stronger than all of the others (in fact, as you probably saw from the sheet, an entire bar contained all seven of the beats within that riff before it repeated in the next bar). Trying to shoehorn that riff into three 4/4 bars then a 2/4 doesn’t work using this principle because the beginning of the first repeat of the riff would then happen in the fourth and final beat of the second 4/4 bar, which does not really sit that well compared to when using 7/4. I have to admit that spotting the 7/4 in the verses of _Outshined_ is probably easier to ascertain than in _Spoonman_ as there are not so many syncopated rhythms within the verse riffs of _Outshined_. 7/4 is one of what is known as irregular time-signatures, in which some of the pulses within the bar have three inner beats and others have two (in this case, one pulse having three inner beats and the other two having two inner beats). For a bit more from a renowned music teacher who does online instructional videos you might like to check out a RUclips channel named MusicTheoryGuy and his “Irregular Time Signatures” video for a bit more about such time-signatures if this whole discussion has piqued your interest to that level. While we are on about the album from which _Spoonman_ came (in this case, _Superunknown_), one of the other tracks (_My Wave_) clearly has five beats per bar during its verses. Yes, another irregular time-signature (5/4, in this case)!
One of the most kickass songs top to bottom in all of music, let alone rock. The drums and bass, the guitar riffs and overdubs, and Chris’ vocal talent, all-around KICK ASS.

Frank Fanelli swear to god.. Tried miserably to play the spoons recently.. Inspired by this song. I laughed so loud when I read your comment.
hahaha..by no means have I masted the spoon man solo..it's like air guitar..no idea what im doing but it just feels right, like im there rockin or should i say Spoonin' with them!
I brought out the cowbell and a few drumsticks for a friend's band and played that solo for a karaoke crowd a few times--It was so much fun!
Love the time signature changes. {3x 4/4, 1x 2/4} and repeat... Sounds so energetic.
+DailyFrankPeter This song is notable for having that main riff in a 7/4 time-signature.

_Outshined_, from their _Badmotorfinger_ album, also uses a 7/4 time-signature throughout its verses.

+DailyFrankPeter After doing a count, the song seems to be in a 7/8 or 7/4 format
+novic329 Yes. 7/4.
Cornell. Pure and absolute genius.
The drum solo alone in this song is better than the whole song "Black Hole Sun". Matt Cameron is just amazing!!
The story of this song is truly amazing. Rest well, Chris. We miss you...
miss the 90s grunge era so much...Layne, Eddie and Chris...3 best voices ever!!
Cobain?
+Mac Gordon yeah Kurt too!

Still my favorite song of all time that features a solo played on the spoons
I prefer the fork version myself.
I prefer the fork version myself. It has more emotion.
+Mario M Nah spork version has the best of both worlds!
i prefer chopsticks; they are BRUTAL..
+kiba vlood no knives are the best they have better sounding solos
One of the most kickass songs top to bottom in all of music, let alone rock. The drums and bass, the guitar riffs and overdubs, and Chris’ vocal talent, all-around KICK ASS.
Thanks Chris for all the hours I spent listening to your songs from Soundgarden, Audioslave, and your own songs, I really appreciate you putting emotion, and more meaning into this life, thank you for everything, rest in peace!
Fernando López 😭

I use to listen to audio slave as a baby it was the only way I would go to sleep 🤣
Sad news that Chris is gone. Never forgotten, a great talent indeed.
The man,the voice. forever missed🖤
We couldnt save you man, but i really wish we could have. Miss you a lot \m/x
RIP CHRIS CORNELL :(
That god damn drum solo...😭😱💕
One of the greatest songs ever, especially out of the 90s... and it's about a man playing with two eating utincils... "Inventions" of about 3k years ago. What a gift. Thank you for sharing with us all... ⚜️
Impresionante canción. La mejor banda Soundgarden sin dudas.
El hombre que maneja las cucharas es un gran artista, él también merece buenos comentarios por su arte.
Lyrics :
Feel the rhythm with your hands
Steal the rhythm while you can, Spoonman
Speak the rhythm on your own
Speak the rhythm all alone, Spoonman
Spoonman, come together with your hands
Save me, I'm together with your plan
Save me
All my friends are Indians
All my friends are brown and red, Spoonman
All my friends are skeletons
They beat the rhythm with their bones, Spoonman
Feel the rhythm with you hands
Steal the rhythm while you can, Spoonman
Thank you, good night people
ah found it
Come on like it all.

One of the greatest voices of my generation is gone today. Chris, I will never forget your music and how much joy you gave to me and many others. Say hello to Heaven.
Chris, a gorgeous, phenomenal talent, a great man, a true musician.
No one today holds a candle to the great performers of the so called grunge era.
I was a kid when this song played on the radio, and I never understood what it was about. but it played a lot on the radio, and when I hear it now, it reminds me of when I was a kid, and I was happier and carefree. it's a great song. it sounds cool every time I hear it
R.I.P Chris Cornell thank you for making some brilliant, unique and incredibly intelligent music. A true genius has left us miss you Chris.
You ever notice that in many of his songs he says " SAVE ME " it's a pretty ominous feeling! Missing him! Especially what would his music sound like today? Love from 🇨🇦✨💫☄️🌠
Thinking the same
I remember those days! Luckly!
He only died a couple years ago, i don't think his music would have changed too much. He was making music still with Audioslave.
@@bernecker88 Audioslave broke up in 2007...
Especially when you know he was murdered and the project they were working on. Save Me, indeed. Holy Spirit with Chris Cornell. Noticably so
This is 1 hell of a rock band
That riff has a Iommi sized groove in it 🕺🏼🖤🥶☠️💥🤘🏻I remeber when this single was released,Soundgarden in 94 was the biggest baddest band on the planet, eventually Tool would come to hold that title but these guys had it from 91-94,they were peerless
"Spoonman" was released as a single on this day in 1994.
Thanks to Chis Cornell for letting me know.
It has been 3 years today since we lost you and still it is a shock you are not here with that voice and music. RIP Chris ~ (20th July 1964~May 18th 2017) 🖤
It hurts every day all the time. 😔
Plot twist: spoonman is the man in the box
The story, the song, the video, etc are all just insanely awesome. RIP Chris, the best vocalist that ever lived!
My heart is broken. I never knew u personally, yet you've been such a huge factor in my life for the past 24 years. I've fell on black days...may you rest peacefully, my beautiful Chris...💜 Say hello to heaven..
I have been high and low but through it all I could always rely on Chris Cornells voice to save my life from very dark times .his death crushed me so bad rip Mr Cornell.
One part of my musical soul died the day Chris passed @Amy Lynn & @Sean Kopperstad. :'-(
What an awesome 7/4 signature!
Spoonman is now a superhero... its official
After all these I still love this song. Great memories. Excellent drums and vocals.
This is one of the songs I point to when I hear people ask what’s so great about Soundgarden. The opening hook convinces everybody.
The world is now a worst place without him... R.I.P Mr Cornell and thank you for your music...
robert garcia THANKS my friend ,,💥
