- In 2004 Rich Samuels from WTTW Channel 11 Chicago did a special on my Lustron Home in Lombard Illinois after finding my old website about Lombard Lustrons. Some photos in the special were sent to me from the original owners when they found my website. Featuring Tom Fetters, author of "The Lustron Home: The History of a Postwar Prefabricated Housing Experiment".

My mom bought the Lustron home I grew up in at Tri-Lakes IN in 1979. My mom still lives in hers and it is on the Historical list in the state. They have taken good care of it since 1979. She is remarried and my step-father and her love living on the lake with their Lustron home. The best part of living their was being able to hang all my posters on the wall with magnets.
this would be great today for young people ,older,young family. single folks just getting out of school. it would be like a alternative to a tiny house. i would love one . however i love the 1950s lol

I currently live in a lustron home.
I still see one on River Rd. In Algonquin, IL. About a quarter mile north of Algonquin Rd. It's right across from the river and even has the optional Lustron Garage.
I grew up in Evansville Indiana, we had a couple of these on the West side, really cool aesthetics!

love these homes, they were break-through design....America wasn't ready....trade unions (carpenters, painters etc) also were against this new & efficient concept of housing...
There are two Lustrons in Portsmouth, Ohio, one on Shawnee Drive, and one on 23rd Street. At least from the exteriors, both appear to be original. I have not been inside either of them, but they are occupied.

There were a few in Bedford Park (2 on 66th Place, built between 1949 and 1951). Those were torn down a few years ago (before COVID). Beautiful, modern-classic homes.

It seemed like such a good idea at the time but it never really took off. I know we have at least one Lustron home here in Columbus Ohio.

There are two in Terre Haute Indiana. I was in one today and the owner did a awesome job.
There is a Lustron in Lancaster, Ohio, on Talmadge Ave. and also in Lawrence Park (Erie), PA on Iroquois Ave.
I passed one in Springfield OH, and there is one south of West Jefferson OH. ( I have pics ;) )
There's a bunch of Lustron survivors in Central Ohio. See the "List of Lustron houses" wiki page for specific addresses all over the US. There's also a restored and authentically decorated Lustron on temporary display (until 12/20) indoors at the Ohio Historical Society in Columbus.

Considering the main problem was turnout rate, why doesn't any other company take up building Lustron-style houses? I feel like quire a few people would like to live in these style houses.
Yet, the Chicagoland area has destroyed the most models.
The catalog listing isn't complete. Two in the area were missed.
Who knew another housing shortage would happen 20 years after this was filmed?
I grew up in Prospect Heights, Illinois... we had about 2 to 3 of them thru out town... 2 yellow, one blue... I thought they were nice looking...

There are three in Michigan City, Indiana
Theres one in the West End of Allentown PA. I think its green.
We had a few in Prospect Heights where I grew up.... I see one too here in fort worth, Tx where I live now.

My cousin owns a lustron home in Chester Hancock County West Virginia.
There is green one in Knoxville Tn. It was the same factory that made the 1948 Tucker.
Where is it ? I live in Straw plains.
@@Hazetruck it is off chapman hwy down from the funeral home. In south Knoxville you can see it from the road on the left if you are going to Henley bridge.

@@StaySolidNvaFold they was asking 103k. I said 90k agreed on 94k🙂 there is no air vents in the house, it is all radiant heat from the ceiling. 2 window ac units.. they only built about 2700 of them
They must get really hot inside.
