Variable Size Pallet Stacker
A new customer approached LEWCO with a need to stack wet plastic pallets at a rate of two per minute. The pallets came in two different sizes and had a 2-piece top and bottom that did not interlock. The customer also didn’t have a fork truck for removing the pallet stacks upon discharge.
LEWCO Engineering to the rescue! LEWCO Engineers worked closely with the customer to consider the multitude of variables. Weekly design reviews kept everyone apprised of the progress. Detailed approval drawings coupled with good communication from both parties ensured the project’s success.
To combat corrosion from the wet pallets, the non-powered infeed conveyor was constructed with sealed bushings in stainless steel rollers. Stainless steel roller chain, washdown motors, and flange bearings were also used. For system controls, LEWCO provided an Allen-Bradley CompactLogix PLC and PanelView HMI touch screen in a NEMA 4X enclosure. The panel was built by LEWCO certified electricians in LEWCO's UL 508A certified panel shop.
LEWCO designed nested product stops on the infeed conveyor for the two different size pallets. This served to locate both pallets and to align the top and bottom sections of the pallet. Getting the pallets nested into one another was critical to keeping a stable, conveyable, stack. The spacing on the drag chain conveyor was designed based on the two pallet sizes (48” L x 40” W x 9.37” H & 35.5” x 28.75” x 8.25” H). Once fully stacked, the stack of pallets automatically discharges onto the pallet jack ramp where operators can remove the stacks from the system.
Prior to shipping, the customer visited LEWCO to test their new machine and see it perform in action. Extensive testing prior to shipping is always recommended for a project of this caliber to help minimize any frustrating last-minute hold-ups in the field.
