Is there a payment plan for the course?
Having taken the beta round of this course as an OSU student, I can't recommend it enough. It heavily influenced my understanding of my property before we put structures on it. In fact, I moved a the proposed location for a structure following this course. Unfortunately, my county regulations prevented maximizing my design possibilities but I have a number of (legal) plans once construction has wrapped up. I live in an area with high rainfalls and a high water table, so I had to come at the course with a slightly different perspective but it was super worth it.

I am in northern Nevada and our biggest challenge is water! It hardly ever rains here, we haul our water, I have been trying different methods of catching and holding water! I need to take this course!! Super excited!

This is so sweet, you'll get to do it, soon! I've had some luck volunteering to take care of a piece of someone else's land, like a neighbor's yard. Some people will try to charge you for this, but I've found plenty of people who don't want a dime. Just happy that they have one less thing to maintain!

I wish you would hang out in Engineering and Land Surveying Schools and try to convert them to bring Permaculture en masse across the world. All the bright and geeky brains put to Great use.
Also have them apply building and civil works into the mix.

Sadly my Father and Grandfather who were both land surveyors, much of which was on farm and natural terrain have passed. Dad would have given me some freebie help.
GrandDad become quite a conservationist as he saw what was happening to the land here in Australia.
Andrew you can place feature articles in their trade journals. Seeing that you have a considerable following, their editors will be receptive to hearing from experts like you.
This will change the world, i hope many people sign up for this class.
Very beautiful you all put this together! Whenever I would have a piece of land I would love to take your practicum course! For me its very clear you know what you are talking about and it is best to learn from experts who have been gaining wisdom from years experience in the fields :)

This is what we’ve been waiting for.
I'm left brained but pretty dumb. Always had wished I had the brains to be an engineer. I can write analytical essays and research papers like a boss. That's about it. Im extremely interested in the material. Maybe the self paced course is for me. It's great that you offer both.
Theres a wide variety of people and backgrounds needed in these projects, including proposal writers, marketing, finance, construction, and others. Maybe there is an alternative there for you instead of engineering.
I am sure the course is amazing... too bad it's completely out of my price range. 😢
I took the regular permaculture class, and I had already learned most of the academic side of things by watching videos and what not. Actual value was actually getting out and doing the site analysis and design.
If it interests you, I recommend you just watch the available videos and try to practically apply them locally and you’ll probably get 75-80% of the gains.
I'll have to save up for the course. I would not have any kind of use for the information as it stands, but it's always useful to have inside-track information as it can help influence people who have the authority.

My husband and I are moving this spring, onto The Family Property outside of Jacksonville, OR, and I have this bee in my bonnet about creating ponds for summer water resilience. Maybe someday we can get a professional or take in enough knowledge!

Hey Andrew I'm from new Zealand and the last couple of years we've had heavy summer rains that have caused crop loss from the soil retaining to much water
Most of what I see in water related permaculture videos is all about retaining the water, how do we design to get rid of ground water when desired?

Would it be possible to take government topology data + maps and just feed it into a program that does the watershed calculations for you? I'm sure the course is invaluable but not having to learn the math involved would certainly lower barriers, especially in developing nations and communities.

Will the course go into details for building a pond/dam ie clay content etc? I was considering Zach Weis' course however its extremely exoensive
I have taken many different permaculture courses and also Zach's and can say none of the others were even close to the value I got from the Water Stories course. Where other courses teach that ponds are good, and the very basic theory of pond construction, they always seem to stop at the details that would enable successful implementation. They didn't go into reading the landscape at all (basing everything off of maps and contours instead), which is critical for choosing the right place. They didn't go into how to work with different materials and what to be aware of, permeable and impermeable geological layers, ribbon and mason jar tests to determine clay content, what equipment to use for compaction, how to create a spillway that will last, and so much more. I get the sense that a lot of permaculture design teachers have never really built their own ponds - they understand the theory, but not the practice. The Water Stories course by comparison was incredibly empowering, not just the theory, but also the how to and real world examples of projects and process. It leads you to take action on land, rather than just drawing designs on paper. Yes it is expensive, but it's well worth it in my experience and was a much better value than the other permaculture courses I have taken.

Yes we do cover the details of building an embankment pond with a dam wall. In the practicum section, we have a series of videos by Abel Kloster of Resilience Permaculture Design (www.resiliencepermaculture.com/) where he walks you through the steps of assessing a pond site, assessing soil types, digging test pits, building a pond with proper compaction and spillways, and more. I don't think we go into as much detail on building ponds as Zach does in his course, in part because we also cover a diversity of active and passive rainwater harvesting systems and wastewater management systems like greywater irrigation. Zach is a professional pond builder, so it is very likely that you will get more detail and guidance on building ponds in his Water Stories course. The OSU Permaculture Water Management course covers a wide range of options and opportunities for Permaculture water management to help you select strategies that are appropriate for your situation. It includes many activities and assignments geared towards assessing and reading the landscape as well as the design and application of integrated permaculture water management systems with the goal of empowering participants to implement their designs on their own site.
@@amillison thank you Andrew, coming from South Africa with our xrate the water stories course is completely out of our price range down here except for the super rich, your course is on the border of affordability so still an option, appreciate the reply
Any updates on the Egypt project?
I did a design for the site. I am not sure about on-site developments at this point. The clients are private so i cannot share my design with the public. But maybe in some years i will be able to document the installed systems.
@@amillisonwould be awesome if some of the clients would grant a open source or another licence to generated material.
Can't see a reason for not sharing design knowledge by the client at least...
How does it compare to the Water Stories course from the guy you introduced us in a previous video? I was considering that one but it was too expensive

I'd love to join for the practicum but those dates are tough for a lot of folks farming or working land management in the northern hemisphere. Have you ever considered offering an additional winter module?
This is the first time we are offering the practicum so we will see how it goes and adjust our future schedules accordingly
I’ve been looking for permaculture videos/guidance for coastal towns - how do you work with the high salt water table ? Can you create freshwater ponds or are there other solutions?
I am actually looking into doing a series on this very topic. So look for that sometime in 2024
I’m living in Oklahoma currently and have been considering a career in engineering. Not sure if an associate in environmental engineering or civil (offered at the local college) was the right path. Also considered electrical engineering, where I could try to land a career in solar, hydro or wind, but permaculture is very needed and overlooked.
I am not a career advisor, but do have an Uncle and Cousin who are Electrical Engineers and it is very hard, competitive and INDOORS.( they don't really like it but are good).
I would be curious to know how much you enjoy being outdoors and working directly with the natural world.
If you and your family are a bit more conservative, it would be interesting to find out how much cross over environmental engineering has to Permaculture, and go with that if there is serious interest.
My thoughts are many professionals with both practical skills and strong instinct are needed across civil and private society. Either of the Engineering, then Permaculture would definitely make you a valuable asset.
Qualifications can help you get yourself taken more seriously in some situations.
But if you want to be on the Land, go Permacuture only, maybe.
Wishing you the best, whatever you do. It is an excellent gift to have an engineering/ design mind.
@@em945 Thank you for a thoughtful reply. I think I will start an environmental degree asap because it is convenient timing in my life. I want to take this permaculture class as well because it is my true interest, but after talking to my significant other, I don’t believe one class will give me the credibility needed to find an employer I’ll settle with.

I have 45 years' experience designing land projects and a team of about 10 people with degrees, skills, experience in Architecture, Land Use, Farming, Aquaculture, Interior Design, Naturopathic Doctor, Landscape Architecture, Irrigation Design, Pond, Lake, gravity watering system design. We are based in San Diego but have team members based in California, Mexico, Uruguay, Hawaii and both individually we have helped design and build permaculture systems and other projects in Mexico, Panaman, Costa Rica, Uruguay, Hawaii, California, Oregon (I lived & worked there 30 years) and several other states. I am here since I follow and support this channel and the excellent information given by Mr. Millison. I may even take this course....although most of this should be subjects I am well-versed in we ALL can always learn more to better help protect and restore the ecology and also create SUSTAINABLE systems for food and habitation.
