You cannot seriously compare Autodesk Inventor to Catia, massive differences in power and price. . A fairer comparison would be Catia and Siemens NX as both are top end applications . This comparison is Mid range (Inventor ) against high end ( CATIA ). Inventor v Solid Edge or Solid works would be a better and fairer match up.

I use both solidworks and Inventor but for what I use it for doesn't justify me getting CATIA at all. I would love to learn it but I don't work at that level of massive assemblies or engineering, I just use these softwares as a tool to program CNC machines along with a CAM package. Maybe one day i'll get to play with CATIA just to see what all the hype is about.

If you are going to do an apple-apple comparison, you should compare Inventor with SolidWorks, SolidEdge, or even with NX, even though most people think CATIA and NX are at the same High End level.

I worked with various modeling softwere through my work, education and free time. Experience range from Aveva,Cadmatic type of CAD softwere to Invetor or Catia. If modeling is for hobby and learning purposes Freecad has a decent range of options very similar to his commercial brothers. Part,Assambly and Wireframe are common CAD language. Once you figure out the basic principles of 3D space ( planes, rotations, constraints on sketch.......) modeling in one softwere you will know all of them. Save the money where you can and implement the knowledge where it counts.

CATIA was created in a time when it had barely any competition and because of that it was the software acquired by many companies.
Those companies began building their 3D databases throughout the years and even though CATIA still features the same, obsolete, hard to use, unattractive and LAME, user interface, those companies have to stick with CATIA because of their databases.
A way more enjoyable CAD software than Autodesk Inventor and of course CATIA, is SolidWorks, a software made, curiously, by the same DESSAULT SYSTEMES, which develops CATIA.
And then there are Pro ENGINEER/PTC Creo, Solid Edge, AutoCAD.
CATIA has tremendous potential not only for three dimensional design, but still, few are liking it and when you get to notice that even today it uses a user interface similar to Windows 98, you start to understand why. Once you get to use it, you understand even better and at the point where you have to use it on a daily basis, you wonder: _why, why do I have to use this crap_?
It's true that a professional user shouldn't choose a software based on it's looks, but CATIA is truly unappealing from the moment you see it and it's not the user who acquires such a software, but the company that user is working for.
CATIA is a CAD software that requires up to ~30% more user interactions (mouse clicks and keyboard presses) than other CAD software, and whether you, the CATIA brainless supporter, accept it or not, by the end of the day, there's a huge felt difference between 10000 mouse clicks or 13000.
Isn't it interesting how an individual that can make use of a software such as CATIA, can still be _brainless_?
    Cheers.

Autocad should not be compared to Catia it's a drafting software, Catia is a parametric 3D modeler.

oh, how i can understand literally every word said. i learned solidWorks and then came to company which use CATIA and it's so broken. Working with catia in comparsion with other CAD is looks like you doing your work with broken arms, and fingers. interface is just mess of features, non intuitive, absolutely not user friendly, no automatization, no popup commands, no hotkeys, CATIA don't have any features to help you, you are fighting with this peace of outdated software. Where CATIA is good? Huge assemblies (plane, car, etc). that's all. If your assembly not as big as a car or plane - you don't want to use CATIA. Or if your customers are not as big as Daimler AG or VAG - do not use CATIA. It's absolutely uncomfortable, annoying, exhausting garbage. Used v5, want to try latest with interface more like solidworks, but experience in V5 telling me that if nothing changed in 20-30 years so why it should be better now?

@@artemgrib Have to agree when I see those programs. At first glance at least. Some people say programs like Inventor is like kindergarten compared to those "real" CAD programs that are "much more advanced".
But then someone actually tests how long it takes to make a certain model of something in both programs.. And Inventor ends up taking half the time...
Imagine the cost savings... You would need something really big in those other programs to compensate for that...
I worked a bit with PDMS long time ago. Absolutely horrible. Old program that was modified over and over to keep of with the times. Surely very advanced. You could automate things as drawings (that you then afterwards had to manually spend endless time on checking and correcting everything anyway since it never went 100% right). You had to be a programmer more or less to do anything more than pure basic commands. And even basic commands were troublesome in many ways. Nothing was easy. Absolutely horrible for the avarage person to use. Barely working graphics interface back then. Maybe 15 years ago.
It could handle very big models. But simple things that you would do in Autodesk Inventor in no time could be a whole project on its own in PDMS.
So people really need to define what actually is "better" with those old and "more advanced" programs. And if those things actually compensate for the fundamental downsides.

Llevo 15 trabajando en Catia en el sector automocion. He aprendido a usar Inventor, he aprendido a usar solidworks, he aprendido a usar NX, entre algunos programas más.

    • @artemgrib

because it's so broken, non intuitive, have too slow workflow, some features are broken, you need to discover special workflows to make something work, so they just can't force people to make something in it, it's just a rabbit hole for industry. they can't move from CATIA because main players are stuck on CATIA because they have millions of parts done in CATIA, and they can't just throw away this piece of shit and use some better software, but listen, they really want because any CAD can solve main problem - CATIA workflow is very time consuming :) and CATIA is outdated, market have better solutions.
