  • We believe this might be the biggest perch ever caught on video. Don Cox with a giant Cannibalistic Jumbo Perch on Idaho’s Cascade Lake. Jason Mitchell joins Don Cox, Chris Bressler and friends in pursuit of giant perch that surpass the magical two pound mark.
    Snapshot of productive locations and presentations that shined during our February 2020 trip. Definitely a bucket list worthy trip for ice anglers looking to catch the biggest perch of their lives.

    • @JasonMitchellOutdoors
      @JasonMitchellOutdoors  4 года назад +3

      ssdpqd2531 25-30 feet is right on the threshold where you start to see barotrauma. We had a few smaller fish that we reeled up too fast that suffered barotrauma that we kept. We found the fish did much better by simply reeling them up slow.

    Do you ever keep perch that are in the 1 1/2 pound range or bigger or do you always release them? If you do keep them does that hurt the population?

    • @JasonMitchellOutdoors
      @JasonMitchellOutdoors  4 года назад +4

      ssdpqd2531 I released them. I wouldn’t mind mounting a really big fish but I have caught fish like that before and didn’t feel the need to keep any. Cascade is somewhat unique because these fish seem to live longer and are older than perch on lakes we fish in the Dakotas. We kept a few smaller fish to eat one evening and a few anglers kept a few fish for the taxidermist. In regards to hurting the population, that can really depend on a lot of factors but we like to use some self restraint.

    • @JasonMitchellOutdoors
      @JasonMitchellOutdoors  4 года назад

      We drill a lot of holes and fished a lot of different kinds of spots until we put a general pattern together. We tried shallow points and didn’t seem much. Tried the old river channel and caught smaller fish. We had our best luck on deep points in 22-35 feet. We pick a lot of wrong spots until we figure things out. Be persistent.

    What kind of line do you prefer and why?

    • @JasonMitchellOutdoors
      @JasonMitchellOutdoors  3 года назад +1

      I personally like to use a lot of braid or super line when I am jigging. I like the no stretch, durability and toughness. Some people think it freezes up but it is easier to slide the ice off the line than mono and it is much tougher. Often use a fluorocarbon leader. Using six pound Frost Braid.

      @@JasonMitchellOutdoors What are your thoughts on the frost line

    • @JasonMitchellOutdoors
      @JasonMitchellOutdoors  3 года назад

      I use the braid for jigging Walleye and crappie/ perch and love it. Often use the hi vis. Use the 2-3 lb fluorocarbon and mono a lot for panfish. Best overall line I have used for ice fishing with the diameters and performance.
