I'm am just an amateur plumber but I remember my (stationary engineer) father telling me, NEVER connect black iron to copper directly. You have to use a brass fitting in between or the copper fitting with the built in isolator to prevent pinhole leaks due to the dissimilar metals and galvanic reaction.
No press lock, I might hold, most likely won't swamp your basement fittings. Awesome layout, sweat and wipe that's how it's done. True artisan my friend. Steve has left the building.
Great job Steve thanks for the way you explain your work and walking me through on the system keep up the good work that you are doing and continue to stay safe 😷😷😷
i like that big beast of a pressure tank on the well. i think my moms is like maybe 2/3 that size. larger tank larger drawdown less cycles on the pump, i think.
Nice... I love watching a professional... I`ve had a 60 gallon indirect water heater for 18 years since I built my house... no problems but should I ever flush this unit like a regular hot water heater? It is a super store stainless
Is this the setup where the furnace will heat the water only the furnace is active and when its not active the electric in the water heater will heat the water?
Couple of observations. Why not put a piece of clear tubing in your purge hose so you can see the air bubbles. Also, have you considered getting a cordless inflator to use on the expansion tanks and not drag down that heavy compressor.
Having the same problem .I was planning to install a electric water heater but now I’m confuse If indirect tank is the way to go with this type of boiler? Thanks for you video Steve
On the plus side I do like that you used a circulator instead of a zone valve to feed the tank. I also prepare the male adapters the same way. What I don't care for is reducing the pipe size to the tank, it should have 1" pipes. I would have cut in a tee on the existing return. I use a 1 1/2 x 1 black tee under the heating circulator. The 30 psi relief valve is supposed to be mounted vertically. I also turn the low limit down at low as it will go and feed the heating transformer with the normally closed side of the new circulator relay. You commented on the flue pipe it should not be reduced I totally agree. They may have a 6" stainless liner in there, but you didn't comment on the draft damper being in the wrong location. Nice clean work other wise.
Hey Steve I gotta question. Is there a reason you piped the supply for the indirect from the port where the relief valve was instead of the supply to the baseboards of the house? I'm asking because most time when I see plumbers install an indirect they usually pipe off the supply to the house. A previous plumber might have left a tee with a plug so another plumber in the future can pipe off that line.
So I have a tankless oil boiler like the one in the video. Runs hot water for me and the wife ( water doesn't last long obviously) and also is use for baseboard radiant heat in the winter.. obviously oil prices always fluctuate so I'm trying to find a better solution for showers even if I have to only use oil in the winter or have a indirect hot water tank connected to this existing boiler..
Steve, I'm in the process of getting a indirect water heater set up with my wood pellet boiler. I have an independent taco controller with three zones and have a third zone ready to go for it. What aquistat did you use on this indirect water heater in the picture? That's exactly the type of aquastat I want.
Our tank-less coil in our oil fired boiler could never keep up. So I added a SuperStore tank. Best move I ever made. We never run out of hot water and it's WAY cheaper than adding a 40 gallon electric tank that a bunch of people suggested.
Hey Steve , Guy here from In Town Plumbing, so I have a quick question for you . If I was to purchase and single zone switch relay, like the one you mounted there .... so if can get the wiring down.... Line voltage 110v Hot to 1...neutral to 2..and then neutral to circulator.. then neutral to where? Then 3 to circ... Then 4 to ZR... also where did you piggy back line voltage from ????
Looks like he took power off the boiler aquastat, appears to be 3 conductor cable. If you use a different relay the terminals will likely be different but they come with wiring diagrams.
It looks like you have the water heater circulator wired to run anytime the the main boiler circulator pump isn’t running. If the hot water tank isn’t calling and the zone valve is closed isn’t that just wasting power? I’m probably just confused on the wiring
There is an aquastat on the indirect which is connected to the relay which turns on the circulator for the tank as well as sending power to the aquastat on the boiler making it fire up.
You would not be draining the whole tank but draining the coil on the boiler side of the system. The domestic hot water would be the storage tank side.
In 2013 I put in a SuperStor HTP indirect water heater 50 gallons. I was told it was the one with the least complaints at the plumbing supply. What do you think is the best one?
It funny there 2 cold water presser reducers in the supply. I have the same back flow an presser reducer as the one you added the drop pipe on to an turned it around so the over presser outlet faced down.. it both a presser reduced to 12psi as well as a one way check. You dont need that 2nd one with the leaver on.. you can opeb that leaver to get full psi but the one you added the drop pioe to cuts the psi to 12 psi any way. I had that valve fail an no water to the boiler .. it factor set to 12psi you cant ajust it.
Damn, you are a Rocket Scientist ! You really know your stuff ! We have plenty of cold pressure, but hot is like a pencil size coming out of all faucets. We called the installer( new boiler 2 years ago ) and he said our warranty just expired. You may need to replace the coil ! I said, what ? ! The original boiler was 30 plus years, and now this new junk goes bad in 2 years ? I was pisssed ! He came and tried to sell us more ad- ons and expensive options. I told him to take a walk. We will never call him again !!! Now we have to find someone like you ! Damn! Hard to find and Honest Lawyer, painless Dentist and a great Plumber ! We need help. But from where. We asked all the Saints for help, but so far no signs have come. We wait !
I love your videos and I so wish you could come down to NY to fix my hot water issue, I’ve got the same boiler and a hot water holding tank but we’re using the hit water coil that’s in the boiler. My hot water pressure is lower then my cold water pressure, do you think my coil could have a blockage?
Why don't you put a Honeywell T1 7 7/3 party controller something like that are why do you use mechanical high limits to control your boilers? Is there some advantage other than being cheaper? Its code down here in Texas.....
the boiler already has a high limit .i just sell the guy what he needs not sure about your party control sounds like a texas thing ..this circulator switching relay is all this system needs to operate properly.

Nicely done Steve! Liking the copper pipe stand.
IBC Canadian made product, installed a few of their new 850s in a building, working very well so far this season
That must feel amazing when you have no heat and to hear you ringing the bell.
That is some sweet piping and soldering Steve. I’m so glad that you put in a ball valve

i like that big beast of a pressure tank on the well. i think my moms is like maybe 2/3 that size. larger tank larger drawdown less cycles on the pump, i think.
I think I followed you with the relays but shouldn't the tank have priority over the house heating side?
I need to say this is your best video yet Steve
Such a good job (TRUE CRAFTSMAN)
Must nice to get your teeth into something like this new install, your pipe work is so accurate and square
lovely to see.
Loved the explanation starting @20:34 to 21:37. thanks! Nice work, looks good.
Nice clean job Steven. Thanks for posting it!
Nice neat piping and install Steve.
Good explanation, only one cuestión do you cap the coil or leave it Oppen thanks hops you or somebody can answer me

Question ? Black iron fittings into tank and from boiler is there a reason ? Brass fittings?
its on the boiler side black is fine
Just curious thanks again !

Excellent job Steve.. Nice install in a timely matter. 👍🏻

6 hrs X $125. This tank was added to assist with hot water volume and steady temps ?
What was done to the backflow device? Thanks for explaining what was happening especially the controls.

Hi Steven do you thing I canI Connect a Indirect water heat to a New yorker Boiler with Coil water heat
Steve is soldering again y’all!
I realize it's kinda off topic but do anyone know a good place to stream newly released movies online ?
@Raphael Edison I watch on Flixzone. Just google for it :)
When that transfer pump starts screamin' at you, shut it off lol
I wonder how many decibels that transfer pump putting out? Sounded loud enough to cause hearing loss at that high pitch.
Very nice job. Nice and neat 👌

There is an aquastat on the indirect which is connected to the relay which turns on the circulator for the tank as well as sending power to the aquastat on the boiler making it fire up.
It's not too complicated, but something like a taco zone controller could make it more easy, but they are expensive and need to rewire.
No Isolation valve on the back side of the pump means draining the tank to replace or service the pump or seals
You would not be draining the whole tank but draining the coil on the boiler side of the system. The domestic hot water would be the storage tank side.

do those pumps break when the water is hot? or do you have to buy a high temp one?

How long does a job like this take to complete? I’m looking to get this done in my home.
Watch all of the video for your answer.
Coming out the unit you should not connect black pipe to copper. Best to use dielectric or brass transitions
It’s not a freshwater application. All it will see is recirculated boiler water with no entrained air. So no corrosion.
No shit
Your the man Steve I've learned so much from just watching your videos
