I don't think Sony thought that people would continue to ask for 1440p and thought it would die down, after all Sony didn't sell a single 1440p display. But when people wouldn't let it go especially since the xbox had it, they caved which is why it took 2 years. This is why competition is good and we need multiple players in the game.
Think it does also have to do with their games coming to PC (which is also due to competition) more Sony exclusives supporting 1440p and widescreen monitors.
1440p is exactly 3x480p, so it's the ideal resolution to play emulated PS1 and PS2 games with perfect pixel scaling and no anti-aliasing. 1080p and 2160p are not perfect multiples of 480, at 2.25x and 4.5x, so there will be some blur or pixels not having the same size or letterboxing.
Can ps5 emulate for the general user? I'm not certain it can. Ironically, if you want to emulate old PS1 or Ps2 games, RetroArch on Xbox may be better.
@@glowerworm As a lot of good emulators are available for x86/x64-based processors and both the PS5 and XBOX are very much based on those, you can bet your behind on that one. So, very much so.
Yup, so PS5 games will have an almost imperceptible res difference but a far more noticeable performance advantage over Series X because Microsoft want to chase 4K…
It has nothing to do with internal resolutions of a game, it's about support of native 1440 monitors. Lots of people are mixing internal resolution of a game and output resolution.
@@frankiesab777 I am fully aware this is just output resolution. My point was that 1440p support is great given how well it matches the monitors that so many people have.
@@mitchboland9591 Sure is, but it has nothing to do with the topic. The topic is finally be able to output to monitors with 1440p native resolution. Internal resolution of a game can be dynamic or fixed to anything as long as we have at least 60fps.
@@frankiesab777 outputting a 1440p rendered game on a ps5 to a 4k tv will help the console to be more efficient and avoid throttling as it would leave the upscaling to the 4k tv thereby leaving it more room to stretch it's legs.
This is a great addition for the PS5. Competition forces companies to push out the best product to us gamers. I am glad that Sony listened to our feedback in this regard.
I wish they would support Freesync/Gsync along with VRR. I didn't even realise those were different features until after I bought a new Freesync monitor, which the PS5 won't recognise as variable refresh rate capable... which it is but just not in their preferred format :(
Me too! Especially since the xbox has been supporting it since last gen. I play most games at 1080p 120hz, and the only display with VRR hdmi 2.1 at 1080p is the inzone m3 which costs even more than the console itself! FreeSync should definitely be on PS5
Yeah this sucks not being able to use FreeSync on the PS5. Would have loved to play the PS5 native Elden Ring if 50 fps could look good on it the way it looks awesome on my PC games, but instead had to play the PS4 version of Elden Ring in BC mode to get a smooth experience.
I was told that the Samsung Odyssey G70A wouldn't be compatible with PS5's VRR in all the reviews. They must've released a firmware update on the display because it works. I dunno, perhaps manufacturer could update it eventually?
Well they need to add support for Freesync/Gsync forum VRR if they are looking to add VRR support for 1440p resolution. HDMI Forum VRR doesn't support VRR at 1440p.
It is a beta and I’m hoping they’ll clean up things like VRR and talk with devs to patch games for cleaner 1440p signals but even if they don’t I’m glad they at least offer the resolution instead of ignoring it. Edit: Although, it really is silly that VRR doesn’t work on G-Sync and Freesync monitors since it’s essentially the same concept/technology
it does with the right tech. I just got an EVGA XR1 Pro USB 3.1 capture card that handles VRR, as well as 1440p HDR 120Hz, 4K HDR 60Hz. This should allow me to use my PS5 over my M1 Mac onto my LG34GK950F (144Hz HDR 1440p ultra wide). There was no clear HDMI -> DisplayPort cable that includes VRR on the market, but the EVGA XR1 Pro should be able to handle it... AND it's only $99.99. macOS also now has VRR support. Hoping 1440p gets VRR soon.
Honestly, 1440p with sharp anti aliasing is a perfect price/performance target for PC gaming. I almost wish consoles targeted 1440p as standard too, instead of (imo) wasting so much power hitting an unnecessary resolution target.
When in practice games hit 1440p as the "lower" bounds for typically 60fps late life cycle game will probably end up doing that at 30fps. Assuming current rendering paradigms.
Don't worry, most console games do target 1440p internally, and then output a 4k image with reconstruction. I'm talking about complex games, the simple ones (and 2D) can do 4k without any issue of course.
Sony should add free sync support. But does the HDMI 2.1 standard support VRR at 1440p. It seems Sony's vrr implementation is just the basic version of HDMI VRR
Nu8000 here. You can actually trick VRR into working briefly as well by turning it off at the system level, starting the game, then turning it back on via the system with the game running in the background. The weird part is it works briefly, then after about 10 seconds it cuts the signal. Conspiracy theorist here but it kind of seems like Sony has opted to block out Samsung TVs to force you into Sony TVs.
@Alex Corvis that’s the thing. It works for a solid 10-15 seconds when you bypass it the way I just explained. If it works for 10-15 seconds that makes me think it’s actually just the ps5 blocking Samsung firmware. Meanwhile Series X has zero issues. Bullshit.
Not that crazy of an idea. They literally waited until they at least had a 1440p monitor on the market before even allowing the PlayStation 5 to have it.
@Alex Corvis at least someone realizes that. Every Sony fan is typically blind to that and a short sighted sheep. I keep a ps5 around for the eventual exclusive but they aren’t even really delivering. Rachet was a cardboard cutout carnival shooter, horizon was boring asf, and GT was a pathetic premium priced microtransaction machine. Demon Souls was great but I really haven’t had much use for it. Everything plays and looks better on Series X too. Some ps5 games are still running at 1440p checkerboard. Like come on, looks like crap on a 4K 65 inch.
Literally been waiting 2 years for PS5 to implement this before I buy one. It is absolutely mind blowing that despite so many titles not supporting native 4K (instead usually upscaling 1440p to 4K output) that the PS5 didn't support 1440p output. What were they thinking?
They were actually thinking about TV support. Can you show us a 1440p TV or a 40-43" gamer monitor with hdmi 2.1 that has the maximum resolution of 1440p? While most of the cases like warzone/call of duty runs with 120Hz in 1080p wich mostly the e-sports standard. Why would you support a resolution that has been supported only by 3-400$+ monitors that relatively under represented in terms of e-sport usage?
Because they thought that the vast majority of people play on either 1080p or 4K TVs. And that's probably true even though I have 1440p monitor and would like to have this output option when my TV is used by family.
The Playstation always has been a very TV / Living Room focused console, that also clinges to standards very heavily (which is not a bad thing I have to say).
My Dell S2719DM can FINALLY play my games at a decent quality with my PS5DE! Previously I was forced to play at 1080p, because any higher and the quality went into Blighttown mode. Now with the new beta? Proper 1440p, and the difference in quality is lovely (not day and night, but noticeable nonetheless). Bravo Sony! 👏🏽
There's another use-case where 1440p can be very beneficial. So far, my PS5 has refused to pass a 4K + HDR 10 signal through my HDMI 2.0 soundbar, forcing me to plug it directly into my TV and use 5.1 audio over ARC instead of losless 7.1. Here's hoping the PS5 will now pass through 1440p + HDR 10 through a HDMI 2.0 soundbar / receiver, as most games don't go much higher in resolution anyway. It's a strange quirk exclusive to PS5, as my Series X will pass through a 4K signal with HDR 10 without any problems.
@@emko333 Nope, when I use linear PCM the audio output is 2.1. The same happens with Series X, so I'm using DTS for both consoles. Maybe you're confused with eARC?
@@jamezxh That would be a shame. I wonder what’s up with the PS5 not passing through a 4K + HDR10 signal while the Series X does. It either passes through 4K without HDR10 or 1080p with HDR10.
8:45 my series x runs Destiny 2 at 4k60 for the main game and switches automatically to 1440p120 for crucible mode (I’m set for 120hz mode with ‘allow 4k’ checked on a 2.0hdmi Samsung tv) I don’t have to change anything to get the ideal situation, it doesn’t just run everything at 120hz at 1440p, though COD does do this and I have to disable ‘allow 4k’ to access 120hz modes. If bungie can figure it out, there’s no reason we need to change any settings on the dashboard for any other software to get it to switch by itself as destiny 2 does
Yeah same with me I have a LG C7 and it's HDMI 2.0 with a 120 hz panel. I played destiny 2 at 120 hz on PS5 but it drops to 1080p. Now I have a C1 and it is capable of 4k120
About time this was added. Strange it took them so long to add basic things like 1440p and VRR. I appreciate Xbox for having this stuff ready at launch.
I really hope it works on my Dell 32'. It's 1440p, 165hz, and HDR on HDMI 2.0. So far I know the HDR works. Can't wait for the update! Excellent video as always DF!
As an owner of an HDMI 2.0 120hz 4K TV (Samsung Q70) This is a game changer, fantastic news. my TV is NOT a gaming monitor, it's 82 inches but because it's HDMI 2.0 it can only display 120hz at 1440p and 1080p. I play my PC games all at 1440p at 120hz but I'm not playing at 1080p on my PS5 to get 120hz and Series X does not support HDR at 1440p 120hz. I can't wait for this update as I'll be able to enjoy more 120hz content on my PS5.
Same. 65" Q70r. Though I am lazy and leave my xbox on 4k60 (also because of the limitation of my hdmi switch I need to route through my soundbar for atmos support, need to get a new 8k hdmi switch to allow 120fps signals). Also just leave my PC at 1440p120 anyway since it is a 6700xt and struggles at 4k. I got a beta program code last week, so should get it going on my ps5. The lack of vrr at 1440p is disappointing since there will be decent frame drops in most 120fps games.
Just got the beta on my Ps5 and tested THPS1&2, 1440p120 was worth it even though the game drops hdr in performance mode. Hopefully they add vrr to 1440p. Mine registered all 1440p options in the test (60, 120, sdr, hdr).
It's insane to see how many people are so dismissive of 1440p in these comments. I don't know if it's ignorance or just flat out stupidity. 1440p monitors are by far the best on a budget when you want sharpness and high refresh rates. Most games on PS5 also run around 1440p when you set it to performance mode as well...
The advice for the NU8000 is a Godsend! I was disappointed when I couldn't get it to work yesterday after waiting so long for this feature... Good to know there's a workaround!
Hi can you try the label 'pc' for the ps5 ingress and check if you still have the issue? I can't download the update in my country to try it xD thx a lot in advance
I have both consoles, and I use my SX for multiplayer games over my PS5 for this reason. it's been what 2 years and it still doesn't have proper 1440p support. It's crazy that Sony doesn't get this.
I hope that FSR and DLSS to make native resolution irrelevant. Instead of quality/balance/perf we should have frame targets 30/60/120 and that dinamic Res to be always a default to allow the best quality possible. On consoles dinamic Res is a reality but doesn't make miracles, I hope that tech evolves and we don't have to choose between quality 4K30 and perf 120hz/60hz. DLSS nowadays makes low Res monitor image better by rendering on higher internal Res and scaling down preserving most of its quality. I hope that native resolution to be irrelevant whether on TVs/monitors or internally. DLSS, FSR etc. should make image better in every scenario. It is possible!
It’s really a long time that Sony needed to implement VRR and now 1440p but at least they did it. For me I have these features I would wish for: 3D Audio / Atmos for soundsystems and AVRs. Lower VRR window with LFC Native Discord integration Controller updates wirelessly Then the console would feel mostly complete for me.
We know Discord is happening at some point. I actually disagree about the controller aspect. While "nice" in theory, updates would take much longer, and there's always the possibility of interference or BT funk that could leave you with a bricked $70 piece of plastic.
I would love to see ultra wide support implemented by some games. But it’s probably not worth the effort for most game studios. Because who is using a uwqhd screen for its PS5?
That‘s the funny thing. All PC Ports of the former exclusive titles( Spider-Man, God of War, Horizon) have support for ultra wide screens, but not on PS4/5 itself 🙃
Been using 1440p for about 10 years as default monitor. It's the perfect size for a 27inch monitor and doesn't cost a kidney like a 4k one + the hardware required to drive that.
@@Blacktrous I dont agree. 1440p look alot sharper then 1080p. Especially on a smaller computer monitors 27-32 inches there is no need to buy a 4k monitor in my opinion.
According to the steam hardware survey at the time of writing this comment, 1080p is used by 67.10% of their consumers. You would even need to take Valve's hardware stats with a grain of salt as I am someone who always defers their surveys. Also consider the fact that 1440p TVs do not exist, there is no way what Richard said was true. I'm just wondering if he meant to say "one of the most popular" which would make more sense.
Wish Sony would have given a heads up this was coming. Bought a 4k60 monitor instead of a 1440p144 one a few months ago because I never figured a TV company like Sony would support a monitor resolution like 1440p, especially after they didn't last gen.
I feel bad for you guys. 1440p is a standard resolution the PS5 and PS4 have ALWAYS support it. The reason why it was never made available is because Sony at first didn't sell 1440p monitors but now that they do, they purposefully withheld 1440p option until their monitors launched and unfortunately that is after the PS5 released. All this because they didn't want people to buy other brand monitors but in your case that happened anyway.
@@jamesw884 you're correct in that they don't have 1440p monitors still but it's impossible to release a 4K gaming monitor that doesn't support 1440p. Having flexibility in resolution output and scaling is critical to PC gaming there's no 4k monitors out there that don't support 1440p
Playing call of duty and fortnite with m&k at 1440p @120fps from a $400 machine is amazing. I have the ps5 digital and even with a 2tb nvme ssd installed it is far cheaper than any pc I have built.
Won’t come. They usually save the money for all these licensing stuff. DV doesn’t have a huge advantage over HDR10 in games - only positive advantage is the tone mapping that DV brings with it. 3D Audio for Soundsystem or Dolby Atmos would be the better feature.
@@MisterReen wym.. Dolby Vision is dramatically better than HDR10 in games. If you haven't played any games in Dolby Vision you have no idea what you're missing 💯
@@nguxurr9667 no its not. Uncharted 4, TLOU2, and many games run at 1440p. It would be beneficial to be able to output those natively on PS4 Pro. And any game that isn't quite 4K will look better on 1440p monitors if you can output in 1440p mode as well, as then you'll only have the game scaled once, straight to your monitor's resolution.
That’d be great to see more games with visual settings like star ocean! Even at 1080p certain games like fortnite or borderlands struggle to retain 120fps.
@@JohnSmith-XYZ Not if you put basic visual settings. Shadow high/low etc. Keeping it within the range of what the console can handle of course. The end goal is to make the game run better not worse by being able to lower certain things unnecessary in a competitive game. Plus games like the remaster of Star Ocean already came with graphic settings without "breaking" anything.
This is not only going to be great for people who have a 1440p pc monitor but also for Elgato users like me, since the 4K60 PRO that I'm rocking only allowed 4K@60 no VRR and LLM with this update I'm pretty sure we will be able to play at 1440p@120 since this elgato supports 1440p@144. Hoping it works because being stuck always at 60hz when I play those 5% 120hz multiplayer games is kinda lame when owning a LG C1
A lot more than high-pixel count goes into making fantastic visuals. You can have a 4k image, but poor textures, pop-in, performance issues, etc. Returnal on PS5 is a great example of amazing visuals not impacted by a low native resolution. Still one of the best looking games I've ever played. Point in case, don't get hung up on technicals... it's all subjective in the end. 1440p is a good option.
I feel like we jumped to 4k just way too early, there's just so many concessions that need to be made to hit such a res even on high end hardware, 1440p is a just a much better resolution for the majority of hardware configurations, especially if you're trying to push raytracing.
@@xsct878 no we haven't. Pretty much every game on my PC I run at ntive 4K. The Xbox One X from 6 years ago runs Far Cry 5 at native 4K. Just because you don't have the hardware to support it, doesn't mean its advancing to fast. Get a new GPU and screen, or play at 720p like everyone else who haven't upgraded.
Most of my ps5 games are disgusting as they target high resolution at the expense of framerate and enhanced visuals. It gets even worse when the console begins to throttle the performance making it look like 30 fps with extreme motion blur. My ps4 games that already have 60fps inBC mode gives me a much better experience than the so called current gen games. No throttling, no stutter, no drops with locked 60fps.
I should redeem my beta code and test it on my Q70R. Just haven't been in a rush since mostly looking at 4k60 games right now (finishing up HFW and plan on Stray next) and 1440p120 without VRR support isn't as enticing. But the auto-switching from 4k60 to 1440p120 depending on game/framerate is nice. Manual switching is a pain, I am lazy and don't play competitive games anyway, so I never do it on my Series X.
1:28 I found this interesting so I just checked with the Steam Hardware survey to see what the stats actually are and... no, this isn't correct. *By far* the most common display resolution, the resolution that 67.1% of people are still using on their primary display, is 1920x1080. Interestingly the percentage of people using 1080p on PC has actually increased slightly since the last survey. The second most popular resolution *is* 2560x1440, but only at 11.5% of gamers using it as their primary display resolution. And for fun 2.6% of gamers are playing at 4K.
There's a lot of other interesting stats in here, that aren't relevant to the video lol. The most popular GPU is still the 1060, but it's only at 7% so it's such a disparate mix of GPUs across the generations that this stat doesn't really mean much. A third of gamers are gaming with 6 core CPUs, now. Windows 10 is actually growing, apparently with people who were on Windows 11 downgrading. Speaking of growth, both Windows and Linux market share are increasing, but people are leaving MacOS. The "total hard drive space" is hilariously capped at 1TB so there's no meaningful data here other than the majority of people have more than this... obviously.
There's something really weird (and a little funny) about the sort of logical-puzzle hoops people are jumping through to explain how 11% is actually more than 67%. It was just really bad wording on DF's part, when what they actually meant (assuming they want to be, you know, truthful) "We think 1440p should be the most common resolution for PC gaming, and here is why..." Because it's not even close, and it would take literal years for that to change.
I bought a 1440p monitor with my ps5 and have been waiting patiently, playing with blurry graphics. I’m so excited for this. will the ps5 be able to run 1440p @ 120fps?
Phenomenal update for PC gamers that have a PS5 on the side (given how 1440p is the most popular resolution on PC). I hope developers will enable native 1440p for their games in the near future.
There's some really good value PC monitors available in the 1440p size range these days, you can get a 165Hz IPS screen for like 300-400 that is perfect to setup when you dont want to dedicate the main home screen to gaming. Sort of thing you can stick on your desk for dual purpose or in a cubby hole.
Sony announced this moments after I finalized the sale of my PS5 to someone after it just sat for most of it's nearly two years here. To add a bit more salt to the wound, I received the beta invitation shortly after I dropped it off at UPS. I had to remind myself that I'm all in on PC and keyboard/mouse now.. I am still just a little salty. Lol 🤣
I just found this about the G9 neo 49” For Samsung G9, you will have to turn off adaptive sync, otherwise the image stretches across the whole 32:9. This means you won't be able to use VRR within PS5. With Adaptive Sync off you can select a screen size in the OST. You will have to do this otherwise you may get artifacts. Choose 27" 16:9. Change refresh rate to 120Hz. Run the 1440p test in PS5. You should get successful runs on 1440p @60 and 120Hz both SDR and HDR. Hope this helps anyone out there, I spent two weeks buying shit off of Amazon, trial and error until something worked. Everything that didn't work, I sent back.
I bought a 4k, HDMI 2.1, 144 Hz monitor for my Series X and PS5 to connect to, upgrading from a 1440p, HDMI 2.0, 144Hz monitor that was larger. Then they announced this PS5 update the same week.
My Samsung Q9fn does 1440p at 120hz, so I'm happy to get this feature. VRR is also supposed to be supported on q9fn, but it's flakey as he'll for me, so I leave it off.
After buying my first PC last year I quickly realized gaming at 1440p 60hz for rpg or 120hz for fps games is the sweetspot. Great to see console getting closer to the perfect sweetspot.
Yep even with a high end GPU, 4K is still a very questionable choice on PC, and its not like most console games run at native 4K, most are using some form of internal resolution scaling and outputting at 4K which is often not ideal.
Hopefully Sony is able to find workarounds to optimize it even better. Not sure how difficult of a task that would be, but considering I've played without any issues on the Series X and S, I'm sure it can't be too difficult. Both these companies need to keep improving their consoles as much as they can in their early years, so developers can be able to optimize games with more leeway and less constraints.
@@amunra1743 Whoops, apologies! for the series S, I meant that they are still optimizing it to make it faster and hopefully load games faster as well as some other features, apart from the 120hz option. Forgot to add that part. Sorry
During the Xbox one and PS4 everyone was demanding 4K 60 then Nvidia hyped us all and on top came Cyberpunk and totally confused public. Sometimes I'm thinking that players just want to fall asleep and to wake up in Matrix
This is great and finally a PlayStation console supports this resolution, Xbox One S and X already supported it last generation, this is great news for people playing on monitors!
There’s Plenty of HDMI 2.0 Television sets which fully support Native 1440p 120fps Hdr including the 2020 version Tcl R635 ! We’ve been playing Native 1440p 120fps on Xbox Series X since launch day and so it’s gonna be awesome to get this same resolution on PlayStation 5 since HDMI 2.0 can’t get 4K 120fps ! The Awesome Thing about PlayStation 5 is that it allows Hdr on resolutions such as 1080p / 1440p unlike the Xbox Series X which doesn’t support Hdr with any other resolution accept 4K So yea Honestly once this PlayStation 5 official 1440p firmware launches then there’s no need for an HDMI 2.1 television set so long as your HDMI 2.0 supports 1440p 120 / Vrr of which many do since almost every single 120fps game on these New Consoles is 1440p / 1080p anyways as only a few Indy game’s are capable of 4K 120 so it’s actually not all that necessary although if you’re got the Xbox Series X then you can’t get HDR with 120fps on HDMI 2.0 since Xbox doesn’t allow Hdr with any resolutions under 4K which is weird because there’s no technical limitation preventing Hdr in lower resolutions as evidenced by the PlayStation 5 ability to deliver Hdr with lower resolutions!
I believe the tcl 635 is the only hdmi 2.0 tv that allows for VRR at 1440p (plus hdr). On paper, it should be perfect for this gen’s consoles despite no hdmi 2.0. But yeah, as of now, no hdr at 1440p for Xbox and no VRR at 1440p for the ps5.
@@Keivz yea I’m not sure perhaps you’re correct but Yes the Tcl R635 absolutely allows 1440p 120fps Hdr and Vrr at the same time, and it also allows for Local Dimming to be enabled on High even with Vrr enabled so it’s actually quite an amazing television set for a 2020 model !
@@Keivz Yea I’m not sure why Xbox won’t allow Hdr with any resolution other than 4K output as it’s just strange they wouldn’t accommodate 1440p / 1080p Hdr when it clearly works just fine on PlayStation! Also I think as far as Vrr is concerned on PlayStation 5 I believe it’s quite likely when Sony release the official firmware it might have Vrr as right now it’s still just a beta so we’ll need to wait and see but I can’t think of any real reason they can’t include Vrr @ 1440p so hopefully they’ll make sure and deliver it at some point
~1:28 "These days, by far the most popular display resolution is 1440p" According to the most recent Steam hardware survey, 1080p is still a 67.10% share and 1440p is only 11.48%. Where is the evidence for 1440p being the most popular? I do agree that it's a sweet spot though and I'm keen for the PS5 to have support.
Poor choice for him to state it as a statistical fact, but I think he was more saying that among gaming community 1440p is quickly becoming the go-to for overall price to performance. While I'm sure most people are still rocking 1080p monitors they've had for years, I'd bet that in terms of new sales and people getting into the industry or just upgrading are going for 1440p since it seems like the perfect middle ground. I love my 1440p monitors and am stoked Sony is finally getting on board
I'm glad to hear about the 1440p support because I was a predominantly PC gamer first with a 1440p 165hz monitor already and I had to go and buy a TV because Sony didn't support the resolution which sucked. Sony might have essentially list money from the PC market of gamers.
You didn't have to do anything. 1080p is fine 4K is fine... you thought otherwise and the overwhelming majority of people couldn't possibly care any less.
Is 1440p really "by far" the most popular resolution in PC monitors? It's still no where near as common as 1080p according to Steam hardware surveys, unless we're talking about new hardware being released which is fair.
If we are going off the steam stats then no way is it the MOST popular display resolution. I was wondering if he meant to say "one of the most popular" which would be more sound.
Yeah, it's not even most popular for gaming monitors unless your definition of gaming monitors deliberately excludes 1080p for...reasons. I'm not sure what their reasoning is.
I’d feel satisfied with a 1440p/120hz picture, obviously I’d welcome more, but whatever. Actually, I don’t care, I’m enjoying everything that I’m playing right now, older and new titles, it’s a great time to be a gamer!
So disappointed with the absence of VRR, it was the main reason I was looking forward for native 1440p support, so I could enjoy VRR on supported games without having to buy an expensive 4K VRR display or downscale to 1080p. Still it's a step forward for people with 1440p displays and hopefully VRR will be added on the future
So I have a Sony X900f TV that supports 1080p/1440p at 120hz only when forced. I've not been able to make this work in the past, does this mean it will force it to work now? I don't have the beta so if anyone that does with this TV please let me know.
I have the same TV and picked up an EDID manager to run games at 1080p120hz. My guess is this firmware will not remove the need for the EDID manager, but it would be nice if it did.
The only thing missing was the VRR HDMI Forum or Freesync support to be perfect. Unlike the Xbox Series, the PS5 supports 1440p with HDR at 120 and 60Hz (Xbox only plays SDR below 2160p)
And i don't get why this HDR support was not mention on this DF analysis! Richard compares the Vrr implementation of Xbox to PS5 two to three times in this Video saying if the Xbox can do it there's no reason the PS5 can not....but why didn't he mention that PS5 can actually do 1440p with HDR and Xbox can not i simple don't get!
That is not correct. 1440p 120hz and HDR is available on Xbox the problem is monitors didn't have HDMI 2.1 when the Series X and One launched and that display output is not supported on HDMI 2.0 and below.
@@Mike-sf7ex Hey, it doesn't make sense. The setting: 1440p, HDR and 120Hz can be played on an HDMI 2.0 cable without any problem. It's an Xbox lock, it only allows it at 2160p.
@@samuel35579 that is not correct. HDMI 2.0 only supports 1440p 120hz at 4:2:2 subpixel. To get HDR or VRR also is not possible. You need HDMI 2.1 and Xbox can do that. I can see it working right now on my Series X and LG C1
Hope they include this support to PS4 Pro as well. On the 60hz lack of support, it does happen in the LG OLEDs as well, for whatever reason, LG decided to not support 1440p60hz...but they do support 1080p60 and 4k60. Maybe now with enough noise they stop being lazy and add the support?
@@jcdenton41100 it’s time for Sony to stop crying over the fact Microsoft will own call of duty and Sony don’t like it and are actually talking about it and are panicking lol
I don’t get why supporting a lower resolution looks like it’s operating like it’s in the territory of the Wild West of gaming. This should have been sorted out, refined and fully supported at launch 2 YEARS AGO.
Considering Ark Survival is 1440p native on the PS5 but displayed at 1080p due to lack of support for 1440p screens...its been excellent. Games that allow the display of statistics are few and far between so I wouldn't have known that it was at 1440p native otherwise.
I have that LG GL850 monitor, and when researching this monitor prior to purchasing it, multiple sources said this monitor is able to do “upscaled 4K”. This has seemingly held true, with the monitor, Xbox and PS5 all listing the output resolution as 3840x2160. When this 1440p update rolls out, will it yield a sharper image if I switch to that setting, since the monitor is TRULY a 1440p display? I assume yes, but want to make sure.
No consoles will care about that. Consoles are still designed for TV users. 1440p is already unnecessary lol. These are such a minority of console gamers. Ultra wide is even more rare
Sony the new Cr-Apple.

Excellent observation
Can ps5 emulate for the general user? I'm not certain it can. Ironically, if you want to emulate old PS1 or Ps2 games, RetroArch on Xbox may be better.

1440p is the perfect middle ground for resolution in games
It has nothing to do with internal resolutions of a game, it's about support of native 1440 monitors. Lots of people are mixing internal resolution of a game and output resolution.
@@frankiesab777 I am fully aware this is just output resolution. My point was that 1440p support is great given how well it matches the monitors that so many people have.
@@mitchboland9591 Sure is, but it has nothing to do with the topic. The topic is finally be able to output to monitors with 1440p native resolution. Internal resolution of a game can be dynamic or fixed to anything as long as we have at least 60fps.
This is related to dislplay output resolution, not games internal resolution🤷
@@frankiesab777 outputting a 1440p rendered game on a ps5 to a 4k tv will help the console to be more efficient and avoid throttling as it would leave the upscaling to the 4k tv thereby leaving it more room to stretch it's legs.
1440p 120fps is the sweet spot for games
I hope a lot more games capitalize on this, mainly in the shooter genre space.
For me, happy with 1440p 60fps myself.
Excellent, my tv only does 120hz at 1440p over hdmi 2.0.
This is a great addition for the PS5. Competition forces companies to push out the best product to us gamers. I am glad that Sony listened to our feedback in this regard.
I wish they would support Freesync/Gsync along with VRR.
I didn't even realise those were different features until after I bought a new Freesync monitor, which the PS5 won't recognise as variable refresh rate capable... which it is but just not in their preferred format :(
Actually, VRR is Freesync/Gsync compatible.
Interesting. 1080p VRR works on my G-SYNC enabled Alienware.
Honestly, 1440p with sharp anti aliasing is a perfect price/performance target for PC gaming. I almost wish consoles targeted 1440p as standard too, instead of (imo) wasting so much power hitting an unnecessary resolution target.
100%!!!
But unfortunately a nice big “4K” sticker appeals to your average chair moistner so the marketing team love it 😟
When in practice games hit 1440p as the "lower" bounds for typically 60fps late life cycle game will probably end up doing that at 30fps.
Assuming current rendering paradigms.
Don't worry, most console games do target 1440p internally, and then output a 4k image with reconstruction.
I'm talking about complex games, the simple ones (and 2D) can do 4k without any issue of course.
1440 p on a large screen(55+) is not the same as 4K. It’s very noticeable
Plus, HDR makes a much bigger difference in terms of picture quality than 4K does. I would rather a game run at 1440p 60fps than 4K 30fps
I hope Sony sees this and gives us VRR in the final release. The beta otherwise so far is really good.

@@dannonyogurt98 it really does suck because my Series X loves my tv. 120 at 1440p VRR support. Like ffs what’re you doing Sony.
@Alex Corvis arrogance. I can’t imagine what the gaming landscape would be if Xbox wasn’t there to push them.

They had one executive who really hated PC
They were actually thinking about TV support. Can you show us a 1440p TV or a 40-43" gamer monitor with hdmi 2.1 that has the maximum resolution of 1440p?
While most of the cases like warzone/call of duty runs with 120Hz in 1080p wich mostly the e-sports standard. Why would you support a resolution that has been supported only by 3-400$+ monitors that relatively under represented in terms of e-sport usage?
They wanted to push their sony bravia tvs
Because they thought that the vast majority of people play on either 1080p or 4K TVs. And that's probably true even though I have 1440p monitor and would like to have this output option when my TV is used by family.

There's another use-case where 1440p can be very beneficial. DLSS nowadays makes low Res monitor image better by rendering on higher internal Res and scaling down preserving most of its quality. I hope that native resolution to be irrelevant whether on TVs/monitors or internally. DLSS, FSR etc. should make image better in every scenario. It is possible!

At 1:31 you mention 1440p is the most popular. But where are these stats? I find it hard to believe most PC gamers use 1440p over 1080p.

Why? Makes no sense, there was never an issue with 4k TVs, only with 1440 monitors that were using output resolution of 1080p instead of 1440p.
Why would you do that? There's no gain in performance.
I was waiting for this video!
The best display is always the one the devs designed the game for
I feel like we jumped to 4k just way too early, there's just so many concessions that need to be made to hit such a res even on high end hardware, 1440p is a just a much better resolution for the majority of hardware configurations, especially if you're trying to push raytracing.
@@kupokinzyt No, I think I'm quite content with my ultrawide 1440p panel.
Very exciting. I’ve owned a 55NU8000 since 2018. Looking forward to 1440p!
The NU8000 test applies to the 2018 QLED TVs (Q6FN, Q7FN, Q8FN, and Q9FN). It may apply to 2019 and 2020 Samsung TVs too depending on what you have.
Yes, i have a Q7fn and i can’t put the 1440p bc the ps5 says that my tv is notcompatible with that resolution.
The "total hard drive space" is hilariously capped at 1TB so there's no meaningful data here other than the majority of people have more than this... obviously.
Yea but alot of those people are playing esport titles where fps is king in AAA titles 1440p is the most used
There's something really weird (and a little funny) about the sort of logical-puzzle hoops people are jumping through to explain how 11% is actually more than 67%. It was just really bad wording on DF's part, when what they actually meant (assuming they want to be, you know, truthful) "We think 1440p should be the most common resolution for PC gaming, and here is why..." Because it's not even close, and it would take literal years for that to change.
@@ziegfeld4131 You're going to have to provide some extraordinary evidence to back up this extraordinary claim.
I bought a 1440p monitor with my ps5 and have been waiting patiently, playing with blurry graphics. I’m so excited for this. will the ps5 be able to run 1440p @ 120fps?
For some games that support it yes
11:07 to 11:18 had me strangely laughing 🤣
Man I would love this feature to get back ported to ps4 pro.
Same here . I've been whinging for years about it
What game are they showing? Looks like fun!
Phenomenal update for PC gamers that have a PS5 on the side (given how 1440p is the most popular resolution on PC).
I hope developers will enable native 1440p for their games in the near future.
1440p is rising to become the most popular resolution****
1080p is still the most popular resolution as it used by 67% of PC gamers
Only 12% of PC gamers use 1440p but it has been increasing faster each month. Last month, it was around 10.5%
Lol 🤣
I just found this about the G9 neo 49”
For Samsung G9, you will have to turn off adaptive sync, otherwise the image stretches across the whole 32:9.
Will the Samsung odyssey gaming monitor g5 work as well? That’s the one I’m planning to buy
I bought a 4k, HDMI 2.1, 144 Hz monitor for my Series X and PS5 to connect to, upgrading from a 1440p, HDMI 2.0, 144Hz monitor that was larger. Then they announced this PS5 update the same week.
Be thankul you have a better display now! :) lol
@4K 40FPS Increase FPS by setting it to 4k ? What does that even mean.
I’ve been waiting for this
Sony gives a feature but then takes a crucial feature away. Some PS5 games require VRR to run a game at 120hz or and “Unlocked Frame Rate Mode”
👉 Hey hey hey whats up with that VRR Flight Sim clip here at 5:50 ?? I thought it only goes to 30 FPS on Series X?
Hopefully Sony is able to find workarounds to optimize it even better. Not sure how difficult of a task that would be, but considering I've played without any issues on the Series X and S, I'm sure it can't be too difficult. Both these companies need to keep improving their consoles as much as they can in their early years, so developers can be able to optimize games with more leeway and less constraints.
On an xbox series S? You are strait out lying...
@@amunra1743 Whoops, apologies! for the series S, I meant that they are still optimizing it to make it faster and hopefully load games faster as well as some other features, apart from the 120hz option.
Forgot to add that part. Sorry
Where are you getting information that 1440p is the most common monitor resolution?
Steam Hardware Survey shows 1440p is at 11% and 1080p is at 67%.
@@foogley
That's exactly what I mean. This is why I asked what stats Richard is looking at to declare 1440p is the standard?
1440p should have been the main target for the PS5 and Series X anyway. They only went 4K because of TV’s and marketing hype.
During the Xbox one and PS4 everyone was demanding 4K 60 then Nvidia hyped us all and on top came Cyberpunk and totally confused public. Sometimes I'm thinking that players just want to fall asleep and to wake up in Matrix
What do you mean “went 4k”? As in they shouldn’t have put 4k on the box?
This is great and finally a PlayStation console supports this resolution, Xbox One S and X already supported it last generation, this is great news for people playing on monitors!
I honestly can not believe the PS5 didn't ship with 1440p, I don't own a PS5 but you would have assumed it already existed
That was the main reason I didn't bought a ps5 at launch. I only own a 1440p monitor.
Sony has had their heads up their asses since winning the ps4 Xbox one generation. Complete asshats now.
The Awesome Thing about PlayStation 5 is that it allows Hdr on resolutions such as 1080p / 1440p unlike the Xbox Series X which doesn’t support Hdr with any other resolution accept 4K
So yea Honestly once this PlayStation 5 official 1440p firmware launches then there’s no need for an HDMI 2.1 television set so long as your HDMI 2.0 supports 1440p 120 / Vrr of which many do since almost every single 120fps game on these New Consoles is 1440p / 1080p anyways as only a few Indy game’s are capable of 4K 120 so it’s actually not all that necessary although if you’re got the Xbox Series X then you can’t get HDR with 120fps on HDMI 2.0 since Xbox doesn’t allow Hdr with any resolutions under 4K which is weird because there’s no technical limitation preventing Hdr in lower resolutions as evidenced by the PlayStation 5 ability to deliver Hdr with lower resolutions!
Thats the longest sentence ever written. Wow.
~1:28 "These days, by far the most popular display resolution is 1440p"
According to the most recent Steam hardware survey, 1080p is still a 67.10% share and 1440p is only 11.48%.

It's the most popular for gaming monitors but definitely not for the general market
They'll probably ad support for it in due time, like they did with 1440p if enough people request it.
Should have added nine more seconds so the video could be 14:40 long.
So I have a Sony X900f TV that supports 1080p/1440p at 120hz only when forced. I've not been able to make this work in the past, does this mean it will force it to work now? I don't have the beta so if anyone that does with this TV please let me know.

I don’t get why supporting a lower resolution looks like it’s operating like it’s in the territory of the Wild West of gaming.
This should have been sorted out, refined and fully supported at launch 2 YEARS AGO.
Because most people play on TV, consoles are made to be played on a TV.
I have the same monitor and was wondering the same thing
It will definitely have a sharper look since the bottleneck would be the monitor being 1440p, as well as better performance.
The NU8000 and similar generations of mid-high end Samsung 4K TVs only accepts 1440p at 120Hz. This is why it failed the first test.
