from the descriptions of various news outlets, the production company is looking to make "vertical slices" of games, comics, merch, and anything else. a vertical slice is a completed small piece of a product that is typically used to show off to an investment company, dev team, or publisher so basically they're looking to find people or a company interested in making various pilots and pitches to companies
I was initially excited but yeah as my nostalgia part of my brain calmed down, I got worried since this company is saying and marketing it all well but I feel like it's either a easy cash grab for them or something shallow made to get something better (for the execs). I hope this isn't the case and my cynicism is unfounded but we'll have to see
I cannot WAIT to spend $99.99 for 250 "backyard bucks" so i can buy packs for my Backyard Ultimate Team and gamble all of my money praying for the .000001% chance of pulling a pablo sanchez. LFG!!!!
@thatboy3930 Well, you cannot deny the truth. Backyard Baseball has not made a new game over 20+ years. So yeah. Whine all you want about the over used joke. It is true.
Vertical slices are sort of like proof of concept things for selling ideas to investors and publishers. So they're taking the remaster of the original game and then will show it off to publishers to try and get them to buy in to making all new games. Same thing with them making some merch to sell, it's all about testing out a market and getting backing.
I never played any of the Backyard games except for Backyard Football, specifically the 1999 version I think. Can't wait for that to be brought back as well. Loved that game.
I made my hockey water bottle stand out with a sticker of the entire roster from backyard sports minus the pros. And another sticker with the hockey commentators, Sunny Day and Buddy Cheque. Sadly, not too many of my teammates get it but I still love it! I also didn’t know there was a store so I just now bought the two pins!
Backyard Baseball was the first game they released back in 1997. It’s the best one to start the remakes with. Releasing on 10/10/2024 on Steam for $9.99.

The way I see it: Playground Productions is doing what they can to drum up genuine consumer interest that they can show off to investors (the newly made Discord server and social media posts, for example) along with their produced material (the trailer, merch sales, etc). All in the hopes of getting the investor support needed to get the development of their game (a remaster/re-release or even a new game) really revved up with new employees and resources.
I absolutely loved the backyard sports games growing up, especially baseball and basketball. I still have baseball and basketball for ps2 somewhere around for safe keeping whenever I get the urge to play it.......which might be right now lmfao.
I hadn't played BYB in 15 years. I played it as a kid. I had BYB 2001 installed on my folks Compaq PC. I loved that game. It's wacky antics, the dialogue the gameplay. I was given a copy by a colleague during my freshman year in 2014. I still remember booting BYB 2003 I was given in a flash drive. I was excited! And I was instantly brought back to 2002 as a kid. The game still played as I remembered. I was in love again! I put maybe 100hrs into that game. Before I had to focus on school work. Almost another 10 years later it once again stole my heart!
By "modern features", I think they could be including an Ultimate Team-esque online mode... so yep, card packs and microtransactions Hope I'm wrong though!
I also grew up on Backyard Sports and can't wait to see how the revival stays true to the original yet at the same time modernizes itself for an upcoming generation.
This may be wishful thinking, but I hope what they mean by “modern features and gameplay that today’s audiences expects” is that the user interface and the controls are more fine tuned. Since I played it on pc back in the day I would, be clicking the area in front of my runner to advance to the next base, but then have to run back if the outfield had a strong arm. But clicking behind them didn’t always make them run back to the base. So I hope it’s something along those lines of gameplay. As far as features go. Since there’s not a lot of couch co-op anymore I would hope it would be things like online multiplayer and dynasties you can play with friends
i loved backyard sports as a kid, i always played the backyard football 2010 game on my Wii. hopefully they bring the football one back, along with the backyard baseball and basketball
The resurgance of this beloved shot of nostalgia for a great many of us is really cool to see. Assuming Humongous is involved, I'm just hoping/looking forward to them not trying to money grab it. Just develop it as a remaster for starters, and all but guaranteed folks are going to flock to it. Backyard Baseball, Hockey, and Football are all-time for myself and a lot of us that grew up with these games.
I could see a cartoon series to go with the video games, but not a movie. Idk how they would do a movie. Though if they were, they should skip the first one and go straight to.............................................. Backyard Sports 2: Pablo's Boogaloo.
One thing I'd love to see is a few more power-ups for some of the kids who never got them. I feel like Kenny Kawaguchi should get a speed boost on cement or street fields in his chair, and also conversely a speed penalty on Sandy Flats. I also want Ricky Johnson to get some kind of boost. He's such a sweet kid, and he tries so hard, but his best stat is still basically average.
Honestly like a backyard baseball TV show or movie could be pretty good. The characters already have a lot of personality from the game. You could definitely make like a story about a ragtag bunch of underdogs that everyone underestimates because of preconceptions.
I think Drew maybe underestimates his own reach - yeah the Kelce brothers have a larger platform but Drew doing his videos had to have made an impact as well.

Personally i played a lot of backyard basketball 2003 on my pc back then, i never played any of the other backyard sports games just the one basketball game but i’m definitely interested in playing the other sports, i just hope these also are coming to consoles and not just PC.
I did enjoyed playing those games as well and I'm only 26. I had the controller that you would plug into either your v. HS system or directly into your T. V.
I'm going to bet 2 things: 1. Pro teams will want to see how popular it is 2. Modern audiences expect is absolutely microtransactions to get actual pros
Ive grew up playing the Backyard Baseball on the PS2, which started my love of the Montreal Expos.
