  • We've been waiting for an EV that's properly nice to drive and doesn't cost half a mil and this could be it: The BMW i4 eDrive40. It's sedan-shaped and not an SUV, it has 340hp that's sent only to the rear wheels. Derryn takes it for a spin in Singapore and finds out if it could be better than the Tesla Model 3 from behind the wheel - but he also explains why the i4 has a big surprise up its sleeve in terms of price!
    ERRATA :
    1. Our mistake, the Tesla Model 3 Single Motor is not front-wheel drive, we've removed references to that in the video. Thank you commenters for letting us know!
    2. When Derryn says "all EVs" in the opening line he means "most EVs".

Tuff to make it as family car. So tight at the back. Certainly oozes luxury. Not cheap at 310K.

An SUV would be a better choice here - the rear room is not super generous.

Not sure why my comment was deleted but this review is not factual. I hate Tesla's but the model 3 is superior to the i4. Contrary to the reviewer who mentioned it's fwd, the base model is rwd. The reviewer harping about how light the car is at more than 2 tons is ridiculous. That is 7 series/s class weight. The base model 3 is only 1.7tons. BMW fanboys or paid by BMW to market the i4. Not an unbiased review.

Thanks Clarence - we removed the previous version with the inaccurate fact about Tesla being FWD, our mistake!
Your facts about the Model 3 are correct, thank you for that.
To clarify again, we are not comparing the car directly to the Model 3. We're not saying it's not a proper EV, we're saying it's not a driver-focused car in the way that a BMW 3 Series or Alfa Romeo Giulia is.
So yes, it's not an unbiased review (no reviews are really) - because we find the Tesla Model 3 a good car to drive, very cost effective, and very attractive in its own way. But the i4 will draw a different crowd.

@@CarBuyerComSg sorry but the i4 is definitely not driver centric. 2.2 tonnes for a compact sedan (based on the 3 series is just ridiculous). You guys are definitely not car enthusiasts if you can even think of comparing the driver engagement of the i4 with a Giulia. the only advantage that this has over the Tesla 3 is the interior from the drivers seat only. Everything else including driving dynamics falls short. In every market, the Tesla model 3 is a direct competitor to the 3/4 series. This is definitely a promotional video sponsored by PML.

    1) Your assertion false: "so far in Singapore, if EV don't have AWD, they are FWD" - FAKE
Truth: Audi Etron, Polestar 2, Tesla SR+, Taycan - those without AWD, are RWD.
    2) S$312K a bloody bargain in your opinion - and you bench the Model 3 Performance and not the more similar performance Tesla Model 3 SR+ which is less than S$200K? So your assertion is really not so obviously "bloody" as bargains go, no?
This is an EV review so the boring schedule of your normal tests all should be enhanced by EV-centric and modern concerns, eg
Have Frunk? Efficiency relative to the competition? autodrive or adaptative cruise control good? Nav incorporate chargers and range? Rear still have the old style transmission tunnel? OTA good or not? Got new features on every OTA? Acceleration gee whiz or not? Which car compete with the I4 in the same cost-performance space? How's the relative pricing compared to the competition? what's the road tax premium? How's the BMW charging ecosystem in Singapore and Malaysia compared to the competition? The batteries are pouch, are they safe compared to cell batteries?
    And does it fart?

    • @CarBuyerComSg

Hi Michael, thanks for your comment!
We mean to say that MOST of them if not AWD, are FWD.
You're correct that the Tesla Model 3 is indeed RWD, and we mention that the Taycan is available as an RWD model too. But all Audi E-Tron models are AWD here, the Mercedes-EQA is FWD, EQC is AWD, the Polestar Single Motor is also FWD. Most of the non-luxury EVs are also FWD - Hyundai Ioniq, Kona, Kia Niro, MG5 and MG ZS EV.
Secondly our assertion that this is a bloody bargain is relative - firstly a S$300k cannot be a 'bargain' in a macro sense, but if you compare it to the other BMW 4 Series Gran Coupes, or even German luxury sedans of a similar size, it is very cost effective.
We are also not pitching it directly against the Tesla Model 3 - hence why we say the Model 3 is not exactly a luxury car in the league of Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz. As you seem to well know, the Tesla is particularly well-priced here in terms of performance to dollars.
Thirdly, this is a 10+ minute video, and as such it's our First Drive impression and not a supercomprehensive review delving into every single aspect of ownership.
As for farts: Derryn farts often, especially after beans.

@@CarBuyerComSg if you're trying to say that the BMW i4 should not be compared against the Tesla Model 3, then I'd wonder hard why both car of comparable OMV cost so much more in Singapore, why Tesla holds the edge in majority of measurable metrics like price, storage, size, performance, acceleration, laptimes, and why the Tesla in many subjective anecdotes is pronounced having the most comfortable seats in the world and the Tesla having a wonderfully luxuriously convenient and fast workflow when it comes to car start and driving off...
Maybe you should indeed hold a shootout between the Tesla and BMW!

@@MichaelTan I think Michael hit the nail on the head when he said that the reviews for EV cars (since they are the future of cars in Singapore in a decade or so) needs to compared within its respective field/competitors. I do hope Carbuyer does try to address the typical EV concerns.
I think however, in the Singapore context, a lot of the achievements that Tesla seem to have over the other EVs around the world end up short or missing in Singapore.
I've test driven the i4 twice and the Tesla M3 twice and my friend's M3P for half a day. That is not counting the 11 days I had with my buddy's Tesla in USA pre-covid. I ended up buying the full loaded i4 M40 edrive with full options (so about $340k). The thing is, when you sit in the i4, you *feel* like you are driving a $400k car. When I drove the Tesla, I felt it was like a $150k when it was moving, but a $300k car when it was not moving.
I really wanted to love the Tesla, and so did my wife, but we got out of the 1st test drive just feeling very meh. Once you get over the surface level gimmicks on the Tesla (which are fun, no doubt) the practicality of the available tech in Singapore vs other EVs within the category just fell short. Laptimes and acceleration are good... but how often you gonna launch the car at every traffic light?

@@winnoe at this time, the tesla firmware has evolved enough to give a very convenient and flowing workflow experience, that one will come to miss when driving most other cars, even the beautiful purpose built ix.
This wonderfully simple workflow is a real luxury to have.

@@MichaelTan Different strokes for different folks, I guess. I want an EV that performs better than a ICE car, has a similar or better ride quality than my previous car, and makes me enjoy driving it. The i4 does all these for me, the Tesla only checks some of the boxes.
All the OTA firmware updates cannot hide the fact that Tesla has only been building cars for a decade or so, compared to long histories of other EV makers. Yet credit must be given when credit is due. Tesla ride quality and comfort is there, but not at the level one expects.
Please test drive the Mercedes EQC or the BMW i4 this weekend and you will understand what I mean. In fact, even Hyundai Ioniq exceeds the Tesla M3 in drive quality vs the price. Yes there is some loss in max acceleration and some range, but the Ioniq is a city car and knows it. Tesla M3 is trying to be the cheapest fun car of the brothers and it was built with that in mind.
I really wanted to love the Tesla M3 but I guess I will only switch to Tesla once:
      - Tesla themselves bring in the Model S /Plaid
      - Next iteration of Model 3 has significantly improved ride comfort and driver comfort.
Now I am only waiting to take delivery of the i4 which will be with me until the Lucid Air hits our shores....
