Hart Island management was transferred to the NYC Parks Dept several days ago. And will now be more accessible to the public. Once they figure out the transportation access logistics.
Oh wow, what great timing! Thanks for the update and for tuning in.
Why would the public want to go to Hart Island?
@@barbie5697 for the same reason people visited cemeteries, life is life.
I don't think Rikers inmates do the burials anymore, either.
Hart island was also a city prison and a Nike missile base. Rat island really doesn’t cover at high tide, as a kid my friends and I swam there from Bown st beach, and I used to dive there for lobsters. Great memories growing up on city island. High island at one time was residential with several private homes.
I'm pleased these islands are left to the birds!
Thanks for tuning in!
This is so cool something i would really love to visit rather than the usual places
Everything Little One, “nope, nothing to see here, it’s uninhabitable for humans...just a bunch of mating birds on an island where an hospital housed those with small pox” 😉!!!
Why? There's nothing but birds
You are not alone. I have been interested in the little islands in NYC since I first learned about North Brother Island. I didn’t know there were so many of these
Finally something new in the old *NEW YORK*
Thanks for tuning in!
You can see North Brother Island and his little brother at a cool lil park called Barretto Park in the Bronx. They have some plaques about Typhoid Mary and some other cool tidbits. Decent views of Queens and Rikers Island and sometimes in the summer The Floating Pool Lady docks there. Used to me and my dog’s favorite place, but then we moved to Brooklyn.. it’s worth paying a visit.
"Nothing here but birds" sounds like " move along folks, nothing to see here" during a massive train wreck hauling UFOs and alien bodies.
Gorilla UMP WHAT
Except that the attraction there at Shooters Island is the boat graveyard almost surrounding its coast but also towards Staten Islands close shores. A beautiful sight strangely looked over in this vid.
AAAAAnd now, these islands are the safest places in NYC!!!
LOL 🤣😢
Lmao!
That's funny 😂
Except that NYC has a remarkably low crime rate.
Really love your videos - especially all the history. I was waiting for you to talk about City Island - though I know it is not obscure. I saw a movie by the same name with Andy Garcia (great quirky movie) which was the first time I had heard of it. It looks like a very delightful place to live.
Hi. City Island was mentioned in my previous video (a link to that one is in the description). Thanks for tuning in!
ALL NYC perfect! I watched it. Are you a native New Yorker?
Thank you for making this video.
The owner of Rat Island is probably living there now. Birds and their doo-doo seem like good neighbors at this time!
i have a boat in these waters... i love giving the "tour" im going to steal your material.
Can you drop me off at North Brothers Island for a couple hrs? 🏚️📷
Great informative video!
Thanks for tuning in!
Wow! thanks for your beautiful video. my favorite city😍 one day I will be visit here inshallah
Thank you for tuning in!
Great stuff.
So interesting 👍
Simply fascinating...
Love it
Thanks for tuning in!
This is so cool!
Thank you
cool video !!
Awesome video! i was trying to find an additional island, and I came up with the island that Meadowmere Park is located on. But technically Meadowmere park is in Nassau and therefore on Long island, and Meadowmere, Queens adjacent to it is of course in NYC, but its not an island. So, I guess as for now your list is exhaustive! Maybe we'll get another Hurricane (Sandy) (hopefully not, though) which might CREATE some more islands. Again, great stuff! :)
Depressing that these islands are off-limits. The narrator has a gorgeous voice, though.
0:15 looks like shes standing up on the receding water as it runs back to sea - pretty cool
Interesting the sickness and quarantine history of NYC.
Hart Island now has mass graves for corona victims.
I met Alex , owner of Rat island. Great guy!
Several years ago my son and I paddled around North Brother Island and landed on South Brother Island to take a break. I plan to paddle to Middle Rock this year.
I am glad there are so many green spaces for birds only in New York. I am guessing they contribute at least a small part in trying to clean the air there.
Similar to Mau Mau, isle of meadows occasionally has kayak tours if you sign up with the parks dept
arrrgh! that background music!!!
Interesting video despite that. I grew up in Arrochar, just west of South Beach, and could see Hoffman & Swinburne from my house (never knew what they were for or that they were artificial).
Hello there, amazing video. However, u miss one. FISHER'S ISLAND !!! I am from GREECE, but I visit NYC 5 years ago and I felt in love since then. I'd like to go back and live there someday. Fisher's Island is in the border of Long Island and Connecticut.
One minor gripe : cholera is pronounced collar-ra
Keep up the good work
Computer voice
3:39 Whoa. The residents burned down their hospital in order to stop an outbreak.
On August 27, 1967, a small private airplane crashed into the radio tower on High Island, destroying the antenna and taking WCBS and WNBC off the air, the day before WCBS's all news format launched.
How about the Jamaica Bay islands?
Thanks for tuning in! Feel free to list them if you'd like.
I know of Broad Channel because there's an A train station on the island. It has a few homes and businesses. Most of the land it's for a bird refuge.
@@frankch28 How about Canarsie Pol, Ruffle Bar, Little Egg Marsh and Rulers Bar Hassock?
North Brother Island was where the burning steamboat, General Slocum was beached. The Slocum is the worst maritime disaster in NYC history, and was the worst loss of life prior to 911!
Every one of these islands are on my list to get permission to go there
I’m an avid bird watcher and I’m not even 13 yet
Once again I am flabbergasted
Thanks for tuning in!
You missed 'Goose Island' on the Hutchinson River. It's by Section 5 in Co-op City, Bronx
and Hunters Island, off Co-op City
????😳😳🤔🤔🤔
Ever since they put a seastreak to Rockaway park i noticed a small island between Rockaway park and new jersey.
Now Hart island is being used to bury those who died from COVID-19
Arif Akyuz has been potters field forever
Since 1869.
@@ohioalarms8364 They have been burying people with no relatives there since the 19th century. It's the city's go to for homeless burials.
COVID corpses should be burned
There was a shock, horror story about this in the British press. As if the island hasn’t been used for burial for a very long time.
Plum island, gardeners island.
N I C E 🇺🇲
I ❣️ NYC
Mau Mau!!!
Interesting. Very interesting.
PS. COLL-er-a
You missed one, 14 would've been Goose Island in the Bronx, it's in the Hutchinson River between the neighbourhood of Co-op City and Pelham Bay Park.
They say that's Westchester County. Just lies outside the border
@@falcoperegrinus82 son, can't you read? Its just outside the border in New Rochelle. Do your research!
Can we have the same energy as this video but we’re talking about the subway system
NYC... Mother of all cities.
🌴☀️
Thanks for tuning in!
City Island Historical Society and Nautical Museum is a place to visit.
Cool 😎 video my fellow New Yorker
Thanks for tuning in!
High island had a caretaker in the 90s....I was on it and got poison ivy hanging out with my friend who was the daughter of the caretaker. Beautiful location!
This is how many time she said birds
👇
what about staten island?
Cholera. Stress on the first syllable.
I’m surprised I didn’t see Fantasy Island in the line up...although I could’ve sworn I saw Tatoo 🤪😋!!! #theplane ✈️
Thanks for tuning in! Though I'm curious to know where exactly did you see him?
Not mentioned in the video is the Canarsie Pol.
What would happened if you go to one of this little islands with a small boat or something?
Because i think there isn't Security or Police 24/7. So is there a way to go there even if its not allowed? And what would be the consequences? Would be interesting to me.
To the viewer: let me save you some time. They're overglorified gravelbars, #11 is the only one you can (maybe) visit, and there's nothing to see there other than the unmarked graves of the poor. And birds having sex with each other.
1500 homeless or otherwise unidentified bodies a year, you know a few of them got made in chicken nuggets
I guessed bird sanctuary. Where's my $1000?
👍🏽👍🏽
Thanks for tuning in!
What about plum island?
250,000 Boarder Jumpers 2019-2020
which is the island where the guy lived and operated one the first catalogs.
LOL I am from NYS. Mosquitos mosquitos mosquitos They come out abut 8 pm no matter where but abound all the time, along with black flies EVERYWHERE there is brush and tress like this. LOL
Didn't think you were gonna name mau mau. Their was always rumors that people grew pot on it and it was guarded by wild dogs. Regardless I still had to get there and did and found neither. Their used to be a bridge to it but the last pieces of it were taken down.
That's a fair amount of taxpayer supported (for the most part) islands for citizens to be restricted from. Good for mini-parks for boating & picknicking during daylight hours only by permit.
Islands for the birds!! 😂😂😂😂
What is sad commercial in the middle of this. Little Ellie with leukemia
what about City Island?
That was in the previous video about 7 larger islands.
What about broad channel island
Belmont is not there anymore
Goose island in The Bronx just outside of section 5 of co op city contact me for pictures
I'll take an e-transfer any time you are ready.
@1:03 Negro point? I doubt that would fly in todays google maps.
I never heard it pronounced quite that way.
James Stewart look at the top right hand on the legend number 1.
"The southern train?". No, not a term.
Hunters Island.
"KOL-era", not ""Kol_ERA".
Welcome to Bird Sh*t Island...
There are over i million bodies buried on Hart Island. Some other facts. During the "Cold War" there were Nike Ajax missile silos. It was also training grounds for "Colored Troops in 1864. It has been a prisoner of war camp during the Civil war. Also NYC prison, drug program ETC. There is a nice story on Wikipedia about the island.
Had to be the islands int the Bronx to be named "Brothers"
I guarantee someone lives on one of these islands, just away from a the nonsense
Who wants to go to rat's island??
Illya K me! I’d love to see the pile of poo..
Why do they call it RAT ISLAND (as if I didn't know.)
There were too many unconfirmed reasons to list. Thanks for tuning in!
They are wasting some of this islands by not letting people go there. Some of those islands have reach history let students faculty, history lovers ghost hunters go there
Where's my $1000 ? 😉
they arent unknown
LUCKY BIRDS ! they own properties in NYC , because theses Islands , are all “ LEFT TO THE BIRDS!” 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I would like to buy an island 🌴
Thanks for tuning in!
Yes I too would like to buy an island..🦩
Why can’t they build homeless shelters on the islands
Youngdrey south Memphis lmaoooo bruh theyll be so messy, fuck no
No fresh water. No sanitation. Operating costs would horrify the taxpayers.
Where my 1,000$ for fessing correct
Wuhan island ?
Send my cheque for 1000 dollars please.
We need to petition these islands to stop using our taxes
Where my 1000$ At
Smh immigrants
