This spectacularly modern jewel echoes a radical change in Western society. During the First World War between 1914 and 1918, women took the place of men who fought on the battlefields. For practical reasons, they took off their corsets, shortened their skirts, and cut their hair. After the war, they enjoyed a certain degree of independence. Bourgeois ladies at the time led an active life; they drove cars and participated in sports activities.
If the affluent bedecked themselves with diamonds for soirees, they wore more casual accessories during the day. While fashion designers, Jean Patou for example, were launching “sportswear” lines, new styles in more defined and geometric shapes were emerging from jewelry workshops.
