M1 Extension to Raymond Terrace

  • The M1 Pacific Motorway extension to Raymond Terrace will feature a 15-kilometre extension of the motorway including a 2.6-kilometre viaduct over the Hunter River and floodplain, the Main North Rail Line, and the New England Highway.
There will also be new bridge crossings over local waterways at Tarro and Raymond Terrace, and an overpass for Masonite Road at Heatherbrae.
Significantly, this project will provide the ‘missing link’ in the national motorway between Sydney and Brisbane.
This is one of two remaining locations on the east coast corridor where the route is an urban road with traffic lights - at Coffs Harbour and in the Hunter-Port Stephens region (Black Hill, Hexham, Tomago and Heatherbrae).
The extension is expected to be open to traffic in 2028.

Quite hard to believe this section isn't being built as three lanes in each direction. There's a lot of traffic entering and exiting through this area.

They have to have something to do to screw it up with more roadworks in a few years when they realise it was built too small.....
Realistically - there was only 1 major NSW infrastructure project that was built with enough forecast toi last 30+ years - That was the Sydney Harbour Bridge....
Imagine if that was built as just two lanes each way - LOL

With appropriate interchanges and no cross roads 2 lanes in each direction is okay. It matches the existing highway.
Now, if only they could get drivers to stay in the left lane unless they are ACTIVELY overtaking.

The widening of the M1 from the Tuggerah interchange to Toukley interchange should be a wake up call to our pollies/planners. From there north the M1 is a 2 lane goat track each way.
Due to long terms in state and federal government by the LNP mainly.
The plan for The Six Cities between Newcastle and Wollongong will mean a lower standard of living and destruction of the coastal and hinterland environment for the benefit of developers at the expense of residents and what’s left of native wildlife.

I remember back when 40 years ago the roads were so much better. Sure you used to have to go further into various towns, but with all this freeway, travel times have not come down, accidents have not been reduced (in fact they have only increased in severity and number due to the increased average speed), and small towns have reduced patronage from the routing of traffic. So tell me, where it the benefit?

Whilst this is a LONG (generational) overdue effort, it is defective in design and budgeting.
In construction is what is known as an EXTRA OVER COST. ( I am a civil engineer)
In this case the design should be 3 lanes in each direction.
The construction cost to to build 2x2 lanes is $x
The construction cost to build 2x3 lanes is not 50% more as costing is not linear.
When established on site, the cost of making something 'bigger' relates mainly to the cost of materials as "when there" it doesn't take much effort to do more.
That's the simplest way I can explain it.
    Recommendation: 2 x 3 lanes.

This has taken way too long. The Grafton bypass was completed 6 or 7 years ago. And there's still the dog's breakfast north of Raymond Terrace where there's 100kph sections and even a 90kph south of Taree. And the fact that Coff's is still a long way off.
I'd give efforts to get this done in a timely fashion a 'D' .
The big culprit here is that superannuation has been so messed up by Howard, Rudd, Gillard, Abbott, Turnbull & Scomo we don't have the same _ballast_ of money. PJK saw superannuation as a way of investing in Australia and infrastructure was a good thing. But as each miscreant since has watered it down and made it more lucrative to the big end of town the country has suffered and so have superannuants.
Thats why Hexham, north of there, that stupid 90kph section (last time l looked) & Coff's bypass has taken so phuqn long.

I am on my 8th covid shot and sadly for totally unrelated reasons have just been diagnosed with heart inflammation, a rather nasty auto-immune disease, brain swelling and liver cancer. Lucky I was vaccinated as at my age of 53 I had a 1 in 10 000 chance of dying from covid, and with my bad luck, probably would have. 🤔So I might make it 4 years, which, let's face it will probably be closer to 8 years. All my children had multiple vaccination. Johnny unfortunately dropped dead of a heart attack playing soccer at the age of 23. So, he won't get to see it. My other children will use it on their way to work in Newcastle, they were looking forward to moving out of home and into the big smoke but because of inflation can't afford too anymore. I have a crazy mate who suggested that the current inflation is because of the lockdowns and our deficit going from 350 billion pre covid to over a trillion. How anyone connects government spending with my children's inability to ever own their own house is beyond me, but I suppose it takes all sorts. So, thank for listening, have a great day, unfortunately my great days are now in the past.

Just because one project wasn't done when you think it should have been done, doesn't mean they were asleep at the wheel. And unlike Labor, who just cut dozens of already planned NSW infrastructure projects, the LNP actually planned ahead for them. Like this one. Your ignorance or bias is seriously breathtaking.

As it was supposed to have been finished October 2017, if it wasn't for a few visitors to a mosquito infested gardens it would be over 6 years old. The designer could have put in a service road to answer their complaints. Instead over 10 years later with millions of hours of people stuck in traffic, countless accidents with injuries and deaths, with consultants spending more money then the original build. Alll the pollies and public servants want bouquets when they deserve bats.

I knew of this "by pass" in the 80's, 40yrs later and they're still talking about it. No doubt it wil only be 2 lanes in each direction. The morons that design these roads have absolutely no idea of how to build roads. You want a successful road sysyem, talk to the professionals that use them! Example, truck drivers, bus drivers, cab drivers, ambulance, fire brigades and police! But that would make sence wouldn't it!
