    Bro.
    Call.
    As an employee of a shop in VA, I can't tell you how many times calling and having a 5-10 minute conversation with managers and owners can save man power, time, gas and energy shleping 15k dollars worth of books across a major metropolitan area.
    Generally you can get an answer on interest with just a call.

  • @b4r0n5a84n
    @b4r0n5a84n Год назад +11

    you should really call ahead and basically make an appointment when you're planning on making a deal with that kind of volume. Even if the owner was there and ready to deal, it takes a while to go through that many books and evaluate grades. If the store has customers coming and going you may have interruptions frequently as well. You can make an appointment for before they open or after they close. Then you can take all the time you need. Kind of tough to make a deal for everything you brought without the time to go through it all. You're putting the potential purchaser on the spot which will get them to start the interaction with a negative view.

    • @Stickygoose
      @Stickygoose  Год назад +2

      Putting them on the spot could also lead to a situation that benefits me though

    Queen City Comics in Cincinnati is a very nice shop. I’ve been there a couple of times and really enjoyed looking through their rows of back issues.

    The queen city shop was the one i visited back in september and the key wall was packed with books so he must have had them all at the convention. Plus he had all the good bronze and silver back issues in shortboxes behind the counter. He hands me the first shortbox and the first issue in there is a low grade ASM 14. I bought so much he gave me 10% off. but yeah im glad he mentioned he had other stuff behind the counter. My girlfriend loved the record shop across the street

    Everyone looks for a super deal, no one wants to pay near FMV. I’ve given up trying to sell, they can just bury them with me in a vault 😅

    • @Ghostin93
      @Ghostin93 Год назад +2

      Yep. I'm perfectly fine with paying FMV or lower for books I'm keeping for a very long time. I understand at the same time these shops have overhead to pay so they try to get as low as possible to make money. Honestly, I don't see too many shops making it after this decade.

      If you are trying to sell to dealers, they will almost never pay FMV (or anywhere near it) because they can’t stay in business that way.

    Your last con trade video inspired me to bring my own backpack full of books to my cities comic con. It was a good experience. Traded a handful of books for a Tales of Suspense 57. The vendor got more value but I was grateful for the exp. Not sure I'd do it again lol. It stressed me out.

    If you are going to cold call shops to sell your issues you should call ahead of time to at least let them know you are coming and if they’re even interested. It’s very rare owners are just hanging around waiting to drop a ton of cash out of the blue on some random books. They will be saving all their money for the convention anyways
    Huge waste of time

    I’d recommend selling on Facebook and joining a comic book group. I’m apart of a bunch that are fantastic. And if you use PayPal goods and services it’s a small fee. It beats eBay’s 15% fee. Facebook has helped me get books I barely see at comics too!

  • @Bradimus1981
    @Bradimus1981 Год назад +3

    The comics were not "boarded"? Red flag to me. No thanks. Like any business, some people get into it JUST for the money. Comics is probably not a good industry or type of store to own if you are not a true comic collector yourself. I could be wrong.

    • @b4r0n5a84n
      @b4r0n5a84n Год назад +1

      Seems more like a money laundering operation. Very few big 'Wall Books' yet tons of valueless filler back issues and the whole store looks like it's been designed to fail.

      @@b4r0n5a84n Since there was a large show in town, and he mentioned that the owner was at it, the expensive stuff was probably at the show.

    It's tough to be a collector...every lcs has good stuff but they have a business to run...I get it ...but in order to have a market ya gotta be reasonable...thats the disconnect between average comic fans and ultimately drives alot of people away from the hobby .

    Right now shop owners are in no position to buy big. Overhead and inventory is killing them… all those Comic Tommy types have tapped the young folks that jumped into the hobby during the pandemic… online Tommy kids club. Actually going to a shop and digging thru boxes is foreign to them.

    Seems like a lot of these comic shops are cash poor. Hard to sell high end stuff when dealing with cash poor people and businesses. I have some high end sports cards and they're a bit hard to get rid of. Just avoid Ohio, it's mostly poor people.
