In this video I am chip carving a pattern from a Danish mangle board from the 18th or 19th century. The exact date is unknown. Mangle-boards were used to press linens and clothes and were a traditional engagement gift across Northern Europe between the 16th - 19th centuries and often heavily decorated with carving, painting, and or both.
The daisy-wheel or hexafoil pattern is a common motif in ornamentation around the world, and was featured prominently on many folk-carved mangle boards.
This carving is part of an ongoing study of chip carved daisy-wheel patterns, and more specifically the process of carving variations of the daisy-wheel using the bare minimum of pattern layout, and relying heavily on my eyes to guide the carving knife.
I'll be posting more of these videos soon, so please like and subscribe. Thanks!
I liked the wind sound in the background. I could just imagine you sitting in the mountains with your trusty native american princess skillfully skinning a beaver.
Stunning design and superbly carved. it was a pleasure to watch the pattern build up.
Great, thank you for sharing.
It's very soothing to watch a good chip carving video. Hope to see more soon.

It's nice, but it also looks like he isn't following all the lines, if so, he needs to explain how to get to this point for novice carvers.
You can't do unwritten rules for beginners - unless you explain. I'm sorry that doesn't work.
