Chip Carving How-To: Carving Circles
This is a video I released to Patreon subscribers last year. Carving circular V-groove lines is tricky and it requires a little practice. In this video I give you some tips for how to get clean results including suggestions for order of cuts, controlling the depth of the cut at specific points, and how to "lead" the knife with your eye.

This video includes some excerpts from the first Office Hours session. The topic for this meeting was sharpening and I took a brand new kn...
Chip Carving How-To: Calibrate Your Cuts
This is a video I released to Patreon subscribers last year. I see this problem all the time with beginning chip carvers: Your knife is sharp, you've got a good grip on it, you're using proper technique, but somehow your cut always skews off the line. Check out the video for a quick tweak that may help you move past this all-too-common problem. If you want to see more trouble-shooting videos li...

I hate watching chip carving. Looks like you’re milliseconds away from force slipping and cutting yourself
What is the name of the tree?
Wow. So consistent. Beautiful work ❤
Beautiful job ❤
I would like to know the measurements you used for this design (the spacing used) 😊
This pattern is beautiful!
Hi Daniel, how do you set the picture on the wood? What do you use?
May I ask what that kind of knife is called, Since its a bit crooked like that, Ive seen them before and I dont remember the name. I think I shall buy one to add to my woodcarving set Im a beginner 😊 I already have one basic whittle knife and I bought a goughes set today it also had one chisel in it a crooked one...I also need to get some reel chisels...but I think I will also need one of those knives you have. Also thanks for making videos for us 😊
Can you link which knife you're using? Please
Where this board available?
Where can I download this drawing??Thx
Wooow, Its excellent , ...we king of craftsman ❤ yours
It's nice, but it also looks like he isn't following all the lines, if so, he needs to explain how to get to this point for novice carvers. You can't do unwritten rules for beginners - unless you explain. I'm sorry that doesn't work.
WOW!
Which knive are you using and where do I get it from? :)
How often do you stop for breaks?
What kind of wood has to be for the art?
Basswood, also called linden or lime wood, or tilia

I liked the wind sound in the background. I could just imagine you sitting in the mountains with your trusty native american princess skillfully skinning a beaver.
Exellent
Beautiful...I LOVE the sound of a truly sharp blade as it slices effortlessly through the wood...Music to my ears, soothing for my soul,,,Thank you for sharing your talent!
Amazing!
You make it look so easy! What kind of wood are you using?
I also wanted to know. He answered below - Basswood.
Beautiful design, impeccable chips!
Hi. Sorry, I gave this a thumbs down as you didn't explain what you were doing. Why do you need to sharpen and new blade? What were the terms you used like "abrade the sides"? What grit of stone, and what type of stones are you using etc.? By the way, I have seen other videos of yours that were very useful.
How many distance of boxes pliz tell me
Man the picnic tables and tree stumps at summer camp didn’t stand a chance against you did they?
Do you recommend basswood for this style?
you are a master. I just ordered your book in Amazon Spain.
Thank you! I hope you enjoy it!
Very nice!
How do you get rid of lines that are not carved out ?
You mean the pencil lines? Just erase and give a very very light sanding with fresh 220 sandpaper. Very light, with the paper wrapped around a scrap block.
Where do you buy the sharpening film? What grit is it?
I buy sharpening film from Tool For Working Wood in NYC, but it’s sold by several retailer: Lee Valley, Wooodcraft, Rockler, and probably many smaller independent sellers. Grits I use in microns: 40, 15, 5 & 1
Thanks for the sharpening tutorial. So the goal is to remove that secondary bevel and to obtain a slightly convex edge right?
Yes. That is correct. I provide detail and some diagrams in my book that explains it.
Inspirational. Thank you Daniel.
