Especially bc Halep and Andreescu have absolutely blown chunks since both those finals. Pathetic inability to play that well unless it’s against the GOAT

2019 us open was truly hers to win
It would have been such a perfect story to end the career on
20 years between first and last slam and all...

The only watchable GS matches from 2018-2019 are the R1-SF rounds where Serena won. After Vinci beat her in 2015, it became so frustrating to watch Serena make it deep at 7 GS tournaments and then choke. Through it all, she still failed to really drop the weight which made Serena more vulnerable when opponents moved her around the court and used drop shots.

Even not at 100% fitness, it's amazing that Serena, Nole, and Rafa are still significantly better than the rest if the field and capable of winning championships. Most of Serena's recent GS final losses are less about fitness, just nerves. We all know she should have about 26-28 GS if that wasn't a factor.

Things have been more difficult since giving birth for sure, after all the determination was still there as usual but the body is weakened by age. However, it has been awesome seeing her play until it lasted ❤

Father-time & self-doubt sums up Serena's post-partum career, which deserved to end with a bang. Those 2018/2019 Wimbledon and U.S Open finals will always be Coulda/Woulda/Shoulda matches for Serena and us fans.

I think we're coming to understand better just how much a woman's body changes post birthing.
Having children changes absolutely everything in a woman's body and it'll never be the same pre-child birth.
An aging Serena I feel would've been a natural progression because you can see now in these latter matches how well she adjusted. But a seasoned and motherhood Serena took her body through such a drastic change that it was double taxing on her body.
Yet she still played like a winning champ!

As a die hard Serena fan, this is hard to watch. I always felt that Serena could have won more slams post 2017. I believe age didn’t help, but I also I felt that Serena got caught in limbo between wanting to beat Margaret Courts 24 slam count and being a mother and wife.
I feel that COVID had an impact too.
I feel Serena never maintained here fitness post baby. There were peak levels of fitness but not long lasting - Serena got back to full fitness imo at the Australian Open 2021, but the losses were becoming mental and breaking her aura of invincibility.
I think Serena needed to really focus on her fitness, we saw at the US Open 2020 she was in her worst physical health ever, even worse then Wimbledon 2005 if we look back 2019, she was in better shape but she was inconsistent with her fitness regime- covid, the near death pregnancy recovery, age, being a parent - all these things didn’t help.
Serena at her best, was an athlete, not just a skilled tennis player, she could move, she hang in matches. But with age and losses, (especially to lesser players) she just couldn’t get over the hurdle.
Serena is the greatest. But it would have been nice to see her get past 23 slams. 4 slam finals losses and Serena wasn’t even paying a full schedule that how good she was getting to the last rounds of slams without being close to her physical best. The GOAT.

This is so tough to watch as a Serena fan. Only one title in the last 5 years of her career is pretty brutal.
If she had retired after AO 2017, she would have ended her career on such a high note - winning a Slam, getting back to #1 in the world and playing her last ever match in a Slam final against Venus. Would have been the fairytale ending.

    • @tannerhussein7633
      @tannerhussein7633 Год назад

That thought comes to my mind every now and then as well, retiring after winning AO17 would have been a happy ending, but then we all would have thought what if she hadn't come back and tried for #24. Hindsight is 20/20 though. I'm slowly making peace with how it panned out but those missed opportunities @ wimbledon and us open in 2018/2019 will always leave a scar on us fans. Her career deserved to end with a bang!

The ONLY comfort I have watching those 2018/19 finals is that, while she never won a set in any of them, the 2019 US Open was the closest in terms of score line. So at least progress was being made. Unfortunately, the pandemic likely screwed up any momentum Serena might have had.
