    Toilet less than 5 yrs old but was doing 'mini' flushes. This was a great tutorial and easy to follow. Also replaced flapper. My only error, almost, was trimming the water tube a tad too short (it was way too long) and then the flush arm got hung up. Thankfully I was able to rotate it away from the arm, and had my old as a spare if needed. Thank you so much. I am a visual learner so this was great.

    Thank you for the concise instructions. Everything went almost perfectly. It would have been helpful to have suggested adjusting the fill valve on the universal fill valve to one notch lower than noted on the chart. At the end of the video, you mentioned that, because it was a universal valve, your water level was a little high so you were going to lower the fill valve by one notch. I don't feel confident pulling out the white lock on the notches now that it's installed. I wish you'd shown how you did that after the installation was complete. For now, I'm going to leave it right up to the top. Again, your video is great. Thank you.

    Thank you so much! Totally worked. The hardest part was getting the clip on the end of the water tube. Does the small ring part of the clip go inside the tube or do you bend it open then tighten around the tube? I did the latter and it's working fine.

    • @Know-How-Now
      @Know-How-Now  5 лет назад

      You are welcome, Greg. The most important things about attaching the fill tube is to make sure the water from the fill tube goes into the overflow tube. Never stuff the fill down the overflow tube . If the fill tube is below the tank water level, it can act like a siphon.

    • @Know-How-Now
      @Know-How-Now  2 года назад

      It could be a few things. Try flushing it out. I have a video on how to do that. Link below. Make sure the shut off valve is fully open. The washer in the valve can make a noise. If you have a pressure reducing valve, maybe it is failing and the water pressure is high. Check water pressure. There are replacement caps for this valve, you could try replacing it. Know How Now has videos on how to repair/check prv, how to check water pressure, how to replace the toilet fill valve. How to replace toilet shut off valve. • @Know-How-Now

      @@Know-How-Now Thank you for the prompt response. I used the "notch number" from the TOTO chart, but the water level was too high - the tank filled right to the top of the flush stand tube! So, I emptied the tank again... :(( ... and tossed the TOTO chart. I aligned the bottom of the fill valve cap (which is a half inch above the "water line" label on the side of the fill valve) to the top of the flush stand tube. That turned out to be one notch LESS than the TOTO chart prescribed for my toilet. Oh, well!! DIYers might be well advised, BEFORE they refill the tank, to check the distance from the "water line" label on the side of the fill valve to the top of the flush stand tube, and adjust the fill valve height if that distance is not half an inch. Save some labor!! Thanks again for your help!

    • @Know-How-Now

      I'm not crazy about the Toto fill valves (made by Korky). They can be finicky and I don't think they last as long as the Fluidmaster. You can adjust the height of the Fluidmaster while they are in the tank. I don't know if there is a Fluidmaster that works in my Toto. I've already have had to replace the fill valve (toilet is around 7 years old), but had a warranty replacement fill valve from Toto. I used that. Next time, I am going to call Fluidmaster and to see if one of their valves is compatible with my Toto.

      I have a Toto Drake, installed in 2013. The original flapper was not a great design. I did contact Toto because the flappper appeared to be too small and after a year of use it was intermittently leaking. They have totally redesigned the flush valve/flapper. It's a tower and the flapper is a large flat "doughnut" that drops on rails. For free they sent me the new design. Fortunately, I was able to install it myself and didn't have to pay a plumber. The new design has been trouble free.
      I also had a problem with the fill valve leaking. I found that the pressure reducing valve in my home had failed and the house pressure was 90lbs. I didn't have any more issues after I replaced the valve.
      I've had to clean the siphon jet that had some mineral build up on it. I suspect this may be a common problem with the low volume flush toilets. I have a video that shows how to fix that problem. It gets a ton of views.
      I bought the Drake because it got great reviews on a plumbing forum. As long as the siphon jet is not clogged, it works good. It seems that the new low volume flush toilets work fairly well, though some people still prefer the old large volume flush ones.

    Great video. Just replaced the fill valve on my CST854 (installed in 2017 and used the older style flush valve with green top). According to the instructions, the # 'pegs' to leave exposed is 4. However, that leaves the water level about 1 3/4" below the top of the flush valve tube. Using your technique of comparing it to the height of the water stain, it is about 1" to 1 1/2" too low. Is it OK to make such a drastic adjustment to bring the water level up? And to make matters worse, I replaced the old fill valve because it was hissing. Now even the new one is hissing slightly. May need to (re)watch your other video about replacing the cap to see if there is a problem with the internal 'gasket'.

    • @Know-How-Now
      @Know-How-Now  3 года назад

      I would adjust the water level to match the level of the stain. The hissing might be caused by high water pressure. Do you have a pressure reducing valve (sometimes called a water regulator). If you do, then maybe it has failed and the water pressure has increased. Check you water pressure. I have videos on how to check the water pressure and a few on pressure reducing valves. Click on the channel name and the the playlist tab where you will find the videos organized by topic.

      @@Know-How-Now Thank you for the information. I think it might be the flapper. I put a few drops of red food coloring in the tank and after a few hours the water in the toilet bowl was pinkish. I turned off the water to the tank and the level dropped an inch or more in a couple hours. Unfortunately the flapper is almost impossible to get off without risking breaking something. It does not slip off easily, the holes that attach it to the flush valve are solid (i.e., it does not just clip on or off) and rigid and have to slip over 90-degree bends in the hard plastic pins on the fill tube the flapper attaches to. How they got it on in the first place is beyond me. You do not happen to have a video on removing the flapper?
      As an FYI for anyone else, it looks like I need to expose 9 pegs to get the correct water level. Have yet to refill to check it, but eyeballing it and using a ruler, that appears to be close.

    • @Know-How-Now
      @Know-How-Now  3 года назад

      I don't have a video showing how to the replace the flapper. Can you cut the flapper with a small pair of cutters. To put the new one on, try spraying a little silicone on the holes.

    • @jopaum7546
      @jopaum7546 3 года назад

      @@Know-How-Now If I carefully slit one of the attachment points on the flapper (that connects to the fill tube) I may be able to slip that side off then I might me able to work the other side off. At least this way I would still have a flapper, albeit a leaky one. I will see what is available in terms of a replacement-this particular model of toilet has been discontinued. Thanks for the silicone suggestion.

    • @Know-How-Now

      I presume yours is the pink flapper. You might want to watch this video. I had problems with mine leaking and replaced the entire flush valve with warranty parts. I do not have a video for that. I'm not sure there is enough room, but you can give it a try. Close the shut off valve and flush to drain the tank. If you have small arms/hands you might be able remove the locking tab and adjust the height while it's in place. Hold onto the bottom of the valve so that it doesn't twist while you are locking the setting in place... you don't want the valve to spin causing the connection to the tank to loosen/tighten.

    I had a plumber recently change my shut-off valve and install a new Toto Universal Fill valve. But after flushing toilet I hear a high pitched hissing sound. Plumber told my wife it’s because we have hard water, which I’m not buying as this toilet has been quiet for 13 years. The only thing I noticed is that the water line is a little below the stain. Any idea why this sound is occurring. it appears to have been installed correctly, but could it be the height of the fill valve or something else?

    • @Know-How-Now
      @Know-How-Now  6 лет назад

      Maybe there is dirt in the valve causing the whistling sound. I have a video that shows how to flush out the valve. I'll put a link below. Also in this video around 3:30, I talk about adjusting the water level in the bowl, you can make the water level higher if you want by opening/closing the valve on the clear tube. ruclips.net/video/L20V0_QQlyE/видео.html

      Know How Now - I tried making the water level higher but no luck. However, I just turned the shut off valve one or two revolutions to the right and it’s much quieter. I do recall when I had to replace the shut off valve that it was not opened all the way. Perhaps it has something to do with the water pressure in my home?

    • @Know-How-Now
      @Know-How-Now  6 лет назад

      It's hard to say what changed to cause the whistling after the repair. Common sense says it would be related to the repair or anything that was disturbed while making the repair. It wouldn't hurt to check the water pressure, especially if you have a PRV (pressure reducing valve, aka water pressure regulator). PRV's do fail, so do expansion tanks. High water pressure can cause problems. I have a video that shows how to check water pressure, gauges are cheap and it's not hard to test. ruclips.net/video/ySfaBvV6e84/видео.html

      Check your house 'water pressure regulator' that regulates water pressure. A Watts brand Pressure Reducing Valve is set at 50psi and is adjustable. High water pressure in a house can result in many problems with water fixtures (sinks, toilets, & shower mixing valves), dishwashers, and hot water heaters. If your house doesn't have one or it is approaching 20 years of service, then best to replace it.

      You may be thinking of looking at the nut from the opposite view point - looking down to the floor. To loosen the nut on the water supply line, you would turn it in the same direction that I showed to turn the nut on the fill valve to loosen it... counter clock wise looking towards the ceiling (generally assumed you understand this). I should have shown it being done.
